Abstract

The results of X-ray photoemission (XPS) and valence bands spectroscopy, optically stimulated electron emission (OSEE) measurements and density functional theory based modeling of graphene oxide (GO) placed on Cu via an electrophoretic deposition (EPD) are reported. The comparison of XPS spectra of EPD prepared GO/Cu composites with those of as prepared GO, strongly reduced GO, pure and oxidized copper demonstrate the partial (until C/O ratio about two) removal of oxygen-containing functional groups from GO simultaneously with the formation of copper oxide-like layers over the metallic substrate. OSEE measurements evidence the presence of copper oxide phase in the systems simultaneously with the absence of contributions from GO with corresponding energy gap. All measurements demonstrate the similarity of the results for different thickness of GO cover of the copper surface. Theoretical modeling demonstrates favorability of migration of oxygen-containing functional groups from GO to the copper substrate only for the case of C/O ratio below two and formation of Cu-O-C bonds between substrate and GO simultaneously with the vanishing of the energy gap in GO layer. Basing on results of experimental measurements and theoretical calculations we suggest the model of atomic structure for Cu/GO interface as Cu/CuO/GO with C/O ratio in gapless GO about two., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, accepted to Thin Solid Films journal

Abstract

Two different types of boron-doped graphene/copper interfaces synthesized using two different flow rates of Ar through the bubbler containing the boron source were studied. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and optically stimulated electron emission (OSEE) measurements have demonstrated that boron-doped graphene coating provides a high corrosion resistivity of Cu-substrate with the light traces of the oxidation of carbon cover. The density functional theory calculations suggest that for the case of substitutional (graphitic) boron-defect only the oxidation near boron impurity is energetically favorable and creation of the vacancies that can induce the oxidation of copper substrate is energetically unfavorable. In the case of non-graphitic boron defects oxidation of the area, a nearby impurity is metastable that not only prevent oxidation but makes boron-doped graphene. Abstract

Radiation-induced centers causing peaks of TSL and exoelectron emission in monoclinic ZrO2 irradiated by fast electrons are studied. A new TSL peak is observed in the temperature range of 50–100 oC at electrons fluence of 6*1013 cm-2. The samples under study have one TSEE peak at 280–300 оС.

Abstract

The processes of photo- (PSEE) and thermally stimulated exoelectron emission (TSEE) in bulk AlN single crystals were preliminary investigated. It was shown that there is a monotonic growth of PSEE current under photostimulation energy > 4.75 eV. It was observed that TSEE peaks in electrons irradiated sample shifted to the low temperature region by 30 K as compared to the irradiation by photons. Abstract

The hyperthermophilic methanogen, Methanopyrus Kandleri, has been marked as a prokaryotic equivalent of the eukaryotic topoisomerase I. The new enzyme is similar to the eukaryotic topoisomerase in having its activities separate of Mg+, in loosening negatively and postively supercoiled DNA, creating a covalent complex with the 3' end of the incomplete end of the DNA-strand and being intelligible to antibodies which are against human topoisomerase I. The response of topoisomerase V with antibody raised against topoisomerase I proves that the eukaryotic and the prokaryotic enzymes are related. The similarities within this group of enzymes can be understood better by comparing the prokaryotic topoisomerase V and eukaryotic topoisomerase I.

39. A closer look at the defects and luminescence of nanocrystalline fluorides synthesized via ionic liquids: the case of Ce3+-doped BaF2.

Abstract

Phase pure BaF2 doped with Ce3+ (0.1%) nanocrystals are synthesized using an ionic liquid (IL) ([C4mim][BF4]) assisted solvothermal method where the IL is not only used as a reaction medium and a capping agent, but also as a reaction partner. Subsequently, upon calcining the as-prepared nanocrystals at various temperatures (200, 400, 600 and 800 °C), athough the crystal phase remains the same, however, a significant change in the lattice strain and morphology is observed. Tensile strain appears in the nanocrystals calcined at temperatures up to 400 °C, but a reversal of the strain, i.e. compressive strain, takes place when calcination is performed at 600 °C and onwards. Nanoflakes are obtained until calcination at 400 °C. However on calcination at 600 °C and beyond, a drastic modification in the morphology is observed. Layer or step-like structures appear due to secondary nucleation of nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of Ce3+ ions gradually decreases with the calcination temperature and finally vanishes at 600 °C/800 °C. To investigate the reasons for the quenching of the PL intensity, thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) and thermally stimulated exoelectron emission (TSEE) measurements are performed. The TSL and TSEE results indicate that in addition to the domination of deeper electron traps that appear as a high-temperature shift of TSEE glow peaks for both 600 °C and 800 °C, some new types of defects like F vacancies (F-centers) can be present, especially in the 800 °C calcined sample. The conditions leading to the quenching of Ce3+ luminescence in the nanoparticles are analyzed and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As an example of thin silica films, 30 nm SiO2-Si heterostructures implanted with Ge+ ions (10(16) cm(-2) fluence) and rapid thermally annealed (RTA) at 950 degrees C are studied by means of optically stimulated electron emission (OSEE) in the spectral region of optical transparency for bulk silica. Quartz glass samples were used as references. Experimental data revealed a strong dependence between electron emission spectral features and RTA annealing time. The spectral contributions of both surface band tail states and interband transitions were clearly distinguished. The application of emission Urbach rule as well as Kane and Passler equations allowed to analyze the OSEE spectra at different optical excitation energy ranges and to retrieve the important microstructural and energy parameters. The observed correlations between parameter values of Urbach- and Kane-related models suggest the implantation-induced conversion of both the vibrational subsystem and energy band of surface and interface electronic states.
