2. Effects of Acute Physical Fatigue on Gaze Behavior in Expert Badminton Players.

Abstract

Perceptual cognitive skills in real game settings, under conditions of fatigue, such as the ability to gather relevant visual information, are key factors in achieving motor goals in sports. The objectives were to evaluate the effects of acute physical fatigue on gaze behavior during a badminton game (Study 1) and in an unfavorable force ratio situation (Study 2). Six international-level badminton players played two sets and unfavorable force ratio situations while wearing eye-tracking glasses before and after a fatiguing task. During the set, fatiguing physical exercise led to fewer fixations per exchange and more fixations on one area of interest. During unfavorable force ratio situations, fatiguing physical exercise led to shorter fixation durations per exchange, shorter fixation durations on two areas of interest, and longer fixation durations on one area of interest. The results showed that gaze behaviors were adapted in acute physical fatigue conditions to maintain performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

17. Kinematic and kinetic comparisons of elite and well-trained sprinters during sprint start

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the main kinematic, kinetic, and dynamic parameters of elite and well-trained sprinters during the starting block phase and the 2 subsequent steps. Six elite sprinters (10.06-10.43 s/100 m) and 6 well-trained sprinters (11.01-11.80 s/100 m) equipped with 63 passive reflective markers performed 4 maximal 10 m sprint starts on an indoor track. An opto-electronic motion analysis system consisting of 12 digital cameras (250 Hz) was used to record 3D marker trajectories. At the times 'on your marks,' 'set,' 'clearing the block,' and 'landing and toe-off of the first and second step,' the horizontal position of the center of mass (CM), its velocity (XCM and VCM), and the horizontal position of the rear and front hand ([X.sub.Hand_rear] and [X.sub.Hand_front]) were calculated. During the pushing phase on the starting block and the 2 first steps, the rate of force development and the impulse ([F.sub.impulse]) were also calculated. The main results showed that at each time XCM and VCM were significantly greater in elite sprinters. Moreover, during the pushing phase on the block, the rate of force development and [F.sub.impulse] were significantly greater in elite sprinters (respectively, 15,505 [+ or -] 5,397 N x [s.sup.-1] and 8,459 [+ or -] 3,811 N x [s.sup.-1] for the rate of force development; 276.2 [+ or -] 36.0 N x s and 215.4 [+ or -] 28.5 N x s for [F.sub.impulse], p [less than or equal to] 0.05). Finally, at the block clearing, elite sprinters showed a greater [X.sub.Hand_rear] and [X.sub.Hand_front] than well-trained sprinters (respectively, 0.07 [+ or -] 0.12 m and -0.27 [+ or -] 0.36 m for [X.sub.Hand_rear]; 1.00 [+ or -] 0.14 m and 0.52 [+ or -] 0.27 m for [X.sub.Hand_front]; p [less than or equal to] 0.05). The muscular strength and arm coordination appear to characterize the efficiency of the sprint start. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether exhaustion modifies the stiffness characteristics, as defined in the spring-mass model, during track running. We also investigated whether stiffer runners are also the most economical. Nine well-trained runners performed an exhaustive exercise over 2000 meters on an indoor track. This exhaustive exercise was preceded by a warm-up and was followed by an active recovery. Throughout all the exercises, the energy cost of running ([C.sub.r]) was measured. Vertical and leg stiffness was measured with a force plate ([K.sub.vert] and [K.sub.leg], respectively) integrated into the track. The results show that [C.sub.r] increases significantly after the 2000-meter run (0.192 [+ or -] 0.006 to 0.21 7 [+ or -] 0.013 mL*[kg.sup.-1]*[m.sup.-1]). However, [K.sub.vert] and [K.sub.leg] remained constant (32.52 [+ or -] 6.42 to 32.59 [+ or -] 5.48 and 11.12 [+ or -] 2.76 to 11.14 [+ or -] 2.48 kN*[m.sup.-1], respectively). An inverse correlation was observed between [C.sub.r] and [K.sub.leg], but only during the 2000-meter exercise (r = 0.67; p [less than or equal to] 0.05). During the warm-up or the recovery, [C.sub.r] and [K.sub.leg], were not correlated (r = 0.354; p = 0.82 and r = 0.21 ; p = 0.59, respectively). On track, exhaustion induced by a 2000-meter run has no effect on [K.sub.leg] or [K.sub.vert]. The inverse correlation was only observed between [C.sub.r] and [K.sub.leg] during the 2000-meter run and not before or after the exercise, suggesting that the stiffness of the runner may be not associated with the Cr. Abstract

International audience; A world-class paracyclist suffering from agenesis of two toes of the left foot followed a specific training program, the effects of which on pedaling kinematics and anaerobic qualities were measured. In addition to the usual training, the program relied on techniques for pedaling and strengthening the foot muscles. The results suggest that the addition of a disability specific treatment can improve the rapid technical and energetic progression of a high-performance paralympic athlete. Such work could be extended to other people with congenital lower limb deformities.; Une paracycliste de niveau international atteinte d’une agénésie de deux orteils du pied gauche a suivi un programme spécifique d’entraînement, dont les effets sur la cinématique du pédalage et les qualités anaérobies ont été mesurés. Celui-ci s’appuyait, en plus de l’entraînement habituel, sur des techniques de pédalage et de renforcement musculaire du pied. Les résultats suggèrent que l’ajout d’une prise en charge spécifique au handicap permet d’améliorer la rapidité de progression technique et énergétique d’une sportive de haute performance en paralympisme. Un tel travail pourrait être élargi à d’autres personnes atteintes d’une malformation congénitale du membre inférieur.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to estimate the difference between potential and kinetic mechanical powers in running (Pke, Ppe) calculated from the center of mass and one anatomic point of the body located on the lower part of the runner's back, the "lumbar point." Six runners undertook a treadmill run at constant velocity and were filmed individually with a video camera (25 Hz). The 3-D motion analysis system, ANIMAN3D, uses a numerical manikin (MAN3D) which compares a voluminal subject (the athlete) directly to the manikin which possesses the same voluminal properties. This analysis system allows the trajectories of the center of mass and the lumbar point to be calculated. Then, from these trajectories, potential and kinetic mechanical powers in running are calculated. The results show that the utilization of the lumbar point rather than the runners center of mass leads to a significant overestimation of Pke and a significant underestimation of Ppe (both p < 0.05). In spite of these differences, however, both methods of calculating Pke and Ppe are well correlated: respectively, r = 0.92; p ≤ 0.01, and r = 0.68; p ≤ 0.05. Taking into account that the trajectory of an anatomic point is experimentally easier to access than that of the center of mass, such a point could be used to estimate the evolution of kinetic or potential energy variation in different cases. However, when the lumbar point rather than the center of mass is used to estimate the mechanical energy produced in running, Pke could appear to be a discriminating parameter, which it is not. Abstract

Epub 2015 Jan 31; The objective of this study was to characterize the mechanics of maximal running sprint acceleration in high-level athletes. Four elite (100-m best time 9.95-10.29 s) and five sub-elite (10.40-10.60 s) sprinters performed seven sprints in overground conditions. A single virtual 40-m sprint was reconstructed and kinetics parameters were calculated for each step using a force platform system and video analyses. Anteroposterior force (FY), power (PY), and the ratio of the horizontal force component to the resultant (total) force (RF, which reflects the orientation of the resultant ground reaction force for each support phase) were computed as a function of velocity (V). FY-V, RF-V, and PY-V relationships were well described by significant linear (mean R(2) of 0.892 ± 0.049 and 0.950 ± 0.023) and quadratic (mean R(2) = 0.732 ± 0.114) models, respectively. The current study allows a better understanding of the mechanics of the sprint acceleration notably by modeling the relationships between the forward velocity and the main mechanical key variables of the sprint. As these findings partly concern world-class sprinters tested in overground conditions, they give new insights into some aspects of the biomechanical limits of human locomotion.

Purpose: The aim of this study was i) to evaluate changes in leg-spring behavior during an exhaustiverun in elite triathletes and ii) to determine whether these modifications were related to an increase inthe energy cast of running (Cr).Methods: Ni ne elite triathletes ran to exhaustion on an indoor track at a constant velocity correspondingto 95% of the velocity associated with the maximal oxygen uptake (5.1 ±0.3 m.s-1; mean ti me toexhaustion: 10.7 ±2.6 min. Vertical and horizontal ground reaction forces were measured every lap(200 m) by a 5 m long force platform system.
