I argue that Hume’s philosophy of time is relationist in the following two senses. 1) Standard definition of relationism. Time is a succession of indivisible moments. Hence there is no time independent of change. Time is a relational, not substantial feature of the world. 2) Rigid relationism. There is no evidence of uniform natural standard for synchronization of clocks. No absolute temporal metric is available. There are countless times, and no time is privileged. Artikkelissa puolustetaan syy-seuraussuhteen ajallista yksisuuntaisuutta. Positiivinen argumentti perustuu ajanluontoisten tapahtumien ennen–jälkeen-suhteen pysyvyyteen. Olennaiset vastaväitteet, jotka perustuvat samanaikaiseen kausaliteettiin, antikausaaliseen fysiikan filosofiaan ja luonnonlakien symmetrisyyteen, otetaan huomioon. Johtopäätöksenä todetaan, että malliesimerkit kausaliteetista ilmentävät syyn ja seurauksen epäsymmetriaa. Syy alkaa ennen sen seurausta, vaikka ne ovat osittain samanaikaisia.

Nykyisessä ajan filosofiassa on tapana erottaa kaksi toisistaan poikkeavaa ja ensi näkemältä ristiriitaista ajallista sarjaa: A- ja B-sarjat. Edellinen vastaa inhimillistä kokemusta ajan kulusta, siinä missä jälkimmäinen on sopusoinnussa fysiikan kanssa. Voiko näitä kahta varsin erilaista näkökulmaa aikaan sovittaa yhteen? Väitän, että epäreduktiivinen fysikalismi tarjoaa tähän kysymykseen hyvin perustellun vastauksen.

Pohdin tässä artikkelissani, missä mielessä tapahtumien välinen aikajärjestys on havaittavissa. Mikä siis on ajallisten käsitteiden, kuten samanaikaisuus ja peräkkäisyys, suhde havaintoihin? Mikäli havainnoilla on perustava rooli ajallista järjestystä koskevien käsitteiden alkuperään, määrittelyyn, viittaamiseen ja oikeuttamiseen liittyen, voitaisiin ajan sanoa olevan ainakin jossain mielessä havaittavissa. Kiinnitän huomioni suppean suhteellisuusteorian (tästedes SST) samanaikaisuuden suhteellisuutta koskevaan argumenttiin. Nähdäkseni se antaa perusteita ajatella, ettei aika ole newtonilainen absoluuttinen ja havaitsematon rakenne, eikä kantilainen aikajärjestyksen havaitsemista edellyttävä aistimellisuuden a priori -muoto. Sen sijaan aika voidaan mieltää empiiriseksi käsitteeksi. Ajallista järjestystä ilmaisevat käsitteet, perättäisyys ja samanaikaisuus, viittaavat havaintoihin. Lisäksi havaintoja tarvitaan oikeuttamaan tapahtumien järjestystä koskevat arvostelmat. Lopuksi esitän väitteelleni lievennyksen. Vaikka aikaa voidaan pitää empiirisenä käsitteenä, jyrkkä käsite-empirismi ei ole hyväksyttävä kanta, sillä se on jännitteisessä suhteessa suppea suhteellisuusteorian (SST) edellyttämän realistisen ontologian kanssa. Ilmiöiden havaittu aikajärjestys voi olla eri kuin niitä koskevien tapahtumien todellinen aikajärjestys — todellinen suhteessa valittuun inertiaalikoordinaatistoon, paitsi absoluuttisen menneisyyden tapauksessa. nonPeerReviewed

In this paper, we argue that the classical conception concerning the relation between animals and humans in Western philosophy is anthropocentric. Notwithstanding the traditional outlook which has emphasized the substantial difference between animal and human intellect, we contend that this classical position has been overturned during the epistemological-evolutionist shift culminated in the 18th and 19th centuries. The paper is constructed in the following way. First, we shall survey the classical, anthropocentric position which includes roughly the time line from antiquity to early modern period. Second, we will analyze Hume’s epistemological arguments which undermine the uniqueness of human intellect, and the inspiration it gave to Darwin for his naturalistic world view which contributed to his work on evolution and natural selection. Third, our conclusion will be that, as the human-animal dichotomy has broken down, arguments which exclude moral status from all animals have become untenable.

David Humen Keskusteluja luonnollisesta uskonnosta (Dialogues concerning Natural Religion) lukeutuu uskonnonfilosofian merkittävimpien teoksien joukkoon. Humen veljenpoika julkaisi sen nimettömänä tämän kuoleman jälkeen vuonna 1779. Vaikka teos on ajalleen tyypillisesti kirjoitettu dialogi-muotoon, monet sen keskeisistä väitteistä olivat aikanaan hyvin rohkeita ja kiistanalaisia. The subject of this essay-based dissertation is Hume’s natural philosophy. The dissertation consists of four separate essays and an introduction. These essays do not only treat Hume’s views on the topic of natural philosophy, but his views are placed into a broader context of history of philosophy and science, physics in particular. The introductory section outlines the historical context, shows how the individual essays are connected, expounds what kind of research methodology has been used, and encapsulates the research contributions of the essays. The first essay treats Newton’s experimentalist methodology in gravity research and its relation to Hume’s causal philosophy. It is argued that Hume does not see the relation of cause and effect as being founded on a priori reasoning, similar to the way in which Newton criticized non-empirical hypotheses about the causal properties of gravity. Contrary to Hume’s rules of causation, the universal law does not include a reference either to contiguity or succession, but Hume accepts it in interpreting the force and the law of gravity instrumentally. The second article considers Newtonian and non-Newtonian elements in Hume more broadly. He is sympathetic to many prominently Newtonian themes in natural philosophy, such as experimentalism, critique of hypotheses, inductive proof, and the critique of Leibnizian principles of sufficient reason and intelligibility. However, Hume is not a Newtonian philosopher in many respects: his conceptions regarding space and time, the vacuum, the specifics of causation, the status of mechanism, and the reality of forces differ markedly from Newton’s related conceptions. The third article focuses on Hume’s Fork and the proper epistemic status of propositions of mixed mathematics. It is shown that the epistemic status of propositions of mixed mathematics, such as those concerning laws of nature, is that of matters of fact. The reason for this is that the propositions of mixed mathematics are dependent on the Uniformity Principle. The fourth article analyzes Einstein’s acknowledgement of Hume regarding special relativity. The views of the scientist and the philosopher are juxtaposed, and it is argued that there are two common points to be found in their writings, namely an empiricist theory of ideas and concepts and a relationist ontology regarding space and time.
