Pump–probe experiments with subfemtosecond resolution are the key to understanding electronic dynamics in quantum systems. Here we demonstrate the generation and control of subfemtosecond pulse pairs from a two-colour X-ray free-electron laser. By measuring the delay between the two pulses with an angular streaking diagnostic, we characterize the group velocity of the X-ray free-electron laser and show control of the pulse delay down to 270 as. We confirm the application of this technique to a pump–probe measurement in core-ionized para-aminophenol. These results reveal the ability to perform pump–probe experiments with subfemtosecond resolution and atomic site specificity.

Bond-breaking in CCl4via dissociative electron attachment (DEA) has been studied using a velocity map imaging (VMI) spectrometer. A number of effects related to the dissociation dynamics have been revealed. The near-zero eV s-wave electron attachment, which leads to the production of Cl- anions, is accompanied by a very efficient intramolecular vibrational redistribution. This is manifested by a small fraction of the excess energy being released in the form of the fragments' translation energy. A similar effect is observed for higher-lying electronic resonances with one exception: the resonance centered around 6.2 eV leads to the production of fast Cl2- fragments and their angular distribution is forward peaking. This behavior could not be explained with a single-electronic-state model in the axial recoil approximation and is most probably caused by bending dynamics initiated by a Jahn-Teller distortion of the transient anion. The CCl2- fragment has a reverse backward-peaking angular distribution, suggesting the presence of a long-distance electron hopping mechanism between the fragments.

The over 15 million metric tonnes of carbon black produced annually emit carbon dioxide in the range of 29–79 million metric tonnes each year. With the renaissance of carbon black in many new renewable energy applications as well as the growing transportation sector, where carbon black is used as a rubber reinforcement agent in car tires, the carbon black market is expected to grow by 66% over the next 9 years. As such, it is important to better understand energy intensity and carbon dioxide emissions of carbon black production. In this work, the furnace black process is studied in detail using process models to provide insights into mass and energy balances, economics, and potential pathways for lowering the environmental impact of carbon black production. Current state-of-the-art carbon black facilities typically flare the tail gas of the carbon black reactor. While low in heating value, this tail gas contains considerable amounts of energy and flaring this tail gas leads to low overall efficiency (39.6%). The efficiency of the furnace black process can be improved if the tail gas is used to produce electricity. However, the high capital investment cost and increased operating costs make it difficult to operate electricity generation from the tail gas economically. Steam co-generation (together with electricity generation) on the other hand is shown to substantially improve energy efficiency as well as economics, provided that steam users are nearby. Steam co-generation can be achieved via back-pressure steam turbines so that the low-pressure exhaust steam (∼2 bar/120 °C) can be used locally for heating or drying purposes. Furthermore, the potential of utilizing hydrogen to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is investigated. Using hydrogen as fuel for the carbon black reactor instead of natural gas is shown to reduce the carbon dioxide footprint by 19%. However, current prices of hydrogen lead to a steep increase in the levelized cost of carbon black (47%).

The dynamics of dissociative electron attachment to ethanol is experimentally investigated at the Feshbach resonance formed with incident electron energies near 9.5 eV. Highly differential laboratory-frame momentum distributions of OH- fragments are measured for a series of energies spanning the resonance width, using the velocity-map-imaging technique. The OH- kinetic-energy distribution indicates that the C-O breaking dissociation process could either be a three-body dissociation or a two-body dissociation with significant rovibrational excited fragments. The small, but significant, anisotropy in the OH- angular distribution provides signatures of the molecular symmetry of the associated resonant state under the axial recoil approximation, which assumes the dissociation is much faster than any rotation of the dissociation axis. Within these assumptions, the 9.5-eV Feshbach resonance can be assigned to the electronic transition from the (10a′) orbital with its ground-state Cs symmetry to the empty (4a″) level, involving the simultaneous electron attachment. This dynamics could be a model for C-O dissociation in larger alcohols and ethers.

We describe an apparatus for investigating the excited-state dissociation dynamics of mass-selected ion-molecule clusters by mass-resolving and detecting photofragment-ions and neutrals, in coincidence, using an ultrafast laser operating at high repetition rates. The apparatus comprises a source that generates ion-molecule clusters, a time-of-flight spectrometer, and a mass filter that selects the desired anions, and a linear-plus-quadratic reflectron mass spectrometer that discriminates the fragment anions after the femtosecond laser excites the clusters. The fragment neutrals and anions are then captured by two channeltron detectors. The apparatus performance is tested by measuring the photofragments: I-, CF3I-, and neutrals from photoexcitation of the ion-molecule cluster CF3I·I- using femtosecond UV laser pulses with a wavelength of 266 nm. The experimental results are compared with our ground state and excited state electronic structure calculations as well as the existing results and calculations, with particular attention to the generation mechanism of the anion fragments and dissociation channels of the ion-molecule cluster CF3I·I- in the charge-transfer excited state.

We present an experimental and theoretical energy- and angle-resolved investigation on the non-dissociative photoionization dynamics of near-resonant, one-color, two-photon, single valence ionization of neutral O2 molecules. Using 9.3 eV femtosecond pulses produced via high harmonic generation and a 3-D momentum imaging spectrometer, we detect the photoelectrons and O2 + cations produced from one-color, two-photon ionization in coincidence. The measured and calculated photoelectron angular distributions show agreement, which indicates that a superposition of two intermediate electronic states is dominantly involved and that wavepacket motion on those near-resonantly populated intermediate states does not play a significant role in the measured two-photon ionization dynamics. Here, we find greater utility in the diabatic representation compared to the adiabatic representation, where invoking a single valence-character diabat is sufficient to describe the underlying two-photon ionization mechanism.

In this study, we present a complete set of electron scattering cross-sections from 1-Methyl-5-Nitroimidazole (1M5NI) molecules for impact energies ranging from 0.1 to 1000 eV. This information is relevant to evaluate the potential role of 1M5NI as a molecular radiosensitizers. The total electron scattering cross-sections (TCS) that we previously measured with a magnetically confined electron transmission apparatus were considered as the reference values for the present analysis. Elastic scattering cross-sections were calculated by means of two different schemes: The Schwinger multichannel (SMC) method for the lower energies (below 15 eV) and the independent atom model-based screening-corrected additivity rule with interferences (IAM-SCARI) for higher energies (above 15 eV). The latter was also applied to calculate the total ionization cross-sections, which were complemented with experimental values of the induced cationic fragmentation by electron impact. Double differential ionization cross-sections were measured with a reaction microscope multi-particle coincidence spectrometer. Using a momentum imaging spectrometer, direct measurements of the anion fragment yields and kinetic energies by the dissociative electron attachment are also presented. Cross-sections for the other inelastic channels were derived with a self-consistent procedure by sampling their values at a given energy to ensure that the sum of the cross-sections of all the scattering processes available at that energy coincides with the corresponding TCS. This cross-section data set is ready to be used for modelling electron-induced radiation damage at the molecular level to biologically relevant media containing 1M5NI as a potential radiosensitizer. Nonetheless, a proper evaluation of its radiosensitizing effects would require further radiobiological experiments.

Much effort has been devoted to describing qualitatively and quantitatively electron scattering processes due to their ever-increasing importance in many industrial and medical applications. We present achievements made in the last years, focusing on some of the advancements and recent progress in the field. Particular reference is made on concrete case studies to probe the level of accord in cross-section data obtained from experiments and theory, as well as on selected instrumentation developments to probe dynamics of dissociative processes induced by electron impact. We stress that the purpose of this colloquium paper is not to be a comprehensive review but rather to provide a snapshot of different research topics in electron scattering by pointing out certain challenges and, therefore, indicating opportunities to facilitate further experimental and theoretical work. In this Review, we present a comparative study between electron and positron scattering cross sections from CO2 molecules over a broad impact energy range (0.1-5000 eV). For electron scattering, new total electron scattering cross sections (e-TCS) have been measured with a high resolution magnetically confined electron beam transmission system from 1 to 200 eV. Dissociative electron attachment processes for electron energies from 3 to 52 eV have been analyzed by measuring the relative O- anion production yield. In addition, elastic, inelastic, and total scattering cross section calculations have been carried out in the framework of the Independent Atom Model by using the Screening Corrected Additive Rule, including interference effects (IAM-SCARI). Based on the previous cross section compilation from Itikawa ( J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data, 2002, 31, 749-767) and the present measurements and calculations, an updated recommended e-TCS data set has been used as reference values to obtain a self-consistent integral cross section data set for the elastic and inelastic (vibrational excitation, electronic excitation, and ionization) scattering channels. A similar calculation has been carried out for positrons, which shows important differences between the electron scattering behavior: e.g., more relevance of the target polarization at the lower energies, more efficient excitation of the target at intermediate energies, but a lower total scattering cross section for increasing energies, even at 5000 eV. This result does not agree with the charge independence of the scattering cross section predicted by the first Born approximation (FBA). However, we have shown that the inelastic channels follow the FBA's predictions for energies above 500 eV while the elastic part, due to the different signs of the scattering potential constituent terms, remains lower for positrons even at the maximum impact energy considered here (5000 eV). As in the case of electrons, a self-consistent set of integral positron scattering cross sections, including elastic and inelastic (vibrational excitation, electronic excitation, positronium formation, and ionization) channels is provided. Again, to derive these data, positron scattering total cross sections based on a previous compilation from Brunger et al. ( J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data, 2017, 46, 023102) and the present calculation have been used as reference values. Data for the main inelastic channels, i.e. direct ionization and positronium formation, derived with this procedure, show excellent agreement with the experimental results available in the literature. Inconsistencies found between different model potential calculations, both for the elastic and inelastic collision processes, suggest that new calculations using more sophisticated methods are required.

The double photoionization of a molecule by one photon ejects two electrons and typically creates an unstable dication. Observing the subsequent fragmentation products in coincidence can reveal a surprisingly detailed picture of the dynamics. Determining the time evolution and quantum mechanical states involved leads to deeper understanding of molecular dynamics. Here in a combined experimental and theoretical study, we unambiguously separate the sequential breakup via D+ + OD+ intermediates, from other processes leading to the same D+ + D+ + O final products of double ionization of water by a single photon. Moreover, we experimentally identify, separate, and follow step by step, two pathways involving the b 1Σ+ and a 1Δ electronic states of the intermediate OD+ ion. Our classical trajectory calculations on the relevant potential energy surfaces reproduce well the measured data and, combined with the experiment, enable the determination of the internal energy and angular momentum distribution of the OD+ intermediate.

We describe a software implementation of a multi-channel, multi-frequency Lock-in Amplifier (SILIA) to extract modulated signals from noisy data distributed over multiple channels of arbitrary number and size. This software implementation emulates the functionality of a multi-channel, multi-frequency lock-in amplifier in a post-processing step following data acquisition. Unlike most traditional lock-in amplifiers, SILIA can work with any number of input channels and is especially useful to analyze data distributed over many channels. We demonstrate the versatility and performance for extracting weak signals in spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy. We also discuss more general applications and exhibit a method to automatically estimate error from a lock-in result.

We report experimental results on three-dimensional momentum-imaging measurements of anions generated via dissociative electron attachment to gaseous formamide. From the momentum images, we analyze the angular and kinetic-energy distributions for NH2-, O-, and H- fragments and discuss the possible electron attachment and dissociation mechanisms for multiple resonances for two ranges of incident electron energies, from 5.3 to 6.8 eV and from 10.0 to 11.5 eV. Ab initio theoretical results for the angular distributions of the NH2- anion for ∼6-eV incident electrons, when compared with the experimental results, strongly suggest that one of the two resonances producing this fragment is a A′′2 Feshbach resonance.

We present state-selective measurements on the NH2+ + H+ and NH+ + H+ + H dissociation channels following single-photon double ionization at 61.5 eV of neutral NH3, where the two photoelectrons and two cations are measured in coincidence using 3D momentum imaging. Three dication electronic states are identified to contribute to the NH2+ + H+ dissociation channel, where the excitation in one of the three states undergoes intersystem crossing prior to dissociation, producing a cold NH2+ fragment. In contrast, the other two states directly dissociate, producing a ro-vibrationally excited NH2+ fragment with roughly 1 eV of internal energy. The NH+ + H+ + H channel is fed by direct dissociation from three intermediate dication states, one of which is shared with the NH2+ + H+ channel. We find evidence of autoionization contributing to each of the double ionization channels. The distributions of the relative emission angle between the two photoelectrons, as well as the relative angle between the recoil axis of the molecular breakup and the polarization vector of the ionizing field, are also presented to provide insight on both the photoionization and photodissociation mechanisms for the different dication states.

We present an experimental and theoretical energy- and angle-resolved study on the photoionization dynamics of nonresonant one-color two-photon single-valence ionization of neutral N2 molecules. Using 9.3-eV photons produced via high-order harmonic generation and a three-dimensional momentum imaging spectrometer, we detect the photoelectrons and ions produced from one-color two-photon ionization in coincidence. Photoionization of N2 populates the X ?g+2, A ?u2, and B ?u+2 ionic states of N2+, where the photoelectron angular distributions associated with the X ?g+2 and A ?u2 states both vary with changes in photoelectron kinetic energy of only a few hundred meV. We attribute the rapid evolution in the photoelectron angular distributions to the excitation and decay of dipole-forbidden autoionizing resonances that belong to series of different symmetries, all of which are members of the Hopfield series, and compete with the direct two-photon single ionization.

We report measurements on the H++H+ fragmentation channel following direct single-photon double ionization of neutral NH3 at 61.5 eV, where the two photoelectrons and two protons are measured in coincidence using three-dimensional (3D) momentum imaging. We identify four dication electronic states that contribute to H++H+ dissociation, based on our multireference configuration-interaction calculations of the dication potential energy surfaces. The extracted branching ratios between these four dication electronic states are presented. Of the four dication electronic states, three dissociate in a concerted process, while the fourth undergoes a sequential fragmentation mechanism. We find evidence that the neutral NH fragment or intermediate NH+ ion is markedly rovibrationally excited. We also identify differences in the relative emission angle between the two photoelectrons as a function of their energy sharing for the four different dication states, which bare some similarities to previous observations made on atomic targets.

Impulsive interactions driven by these x-ray pulses provide a way to create and probe valence electron motions with high temporal and spatial resolution. Observing these electronic motions is crucial to understand the role of electronic coherence in chemical processes. A simple nonlinear technique for probing electronic motion, impulsive stimulated x-ray Raman scattering (ISXRS), involves a single impulsive interaction to produce a coherent superposition of electronic states. We demonstrate electronic population transfer via ISXRS using broad bandwidth (5.5 eV full width at half maximum) attosecond x-ray pulses produced by the Linac Coherent Light Source. The impulsive excitation is resonantly enhanced by the oxygen 1s→2π^{*} resonance of nitric oxide (NO), and excited state neutral molecules are probed with a time-delayed UV laser pulse.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the photodissociation dynamics of ion-pair formation in O2 following resonant two-photon absorption of a 9.3 eV femtosecond pulse, where the resulting O+ ions are detected using 3D momentum imaging. Ion-pair formation states of Σg-3 and 3Πg symmetry are accessed through predissociation of optically dark continuum Rydberg states converging to the B Σg-2 ionic state, which are resonantly populated via a mixture of both parallel-parallel and parallel-perpendicular two-photon transitions. This mixture is evident in the angular distribution of the dissociation relative to the light polarization and varies with the kinetic energy release (KER) of the fragmenting ion pair. The KER-dependent photoion angular distribution reveals the underlying two-photon absorption dynamics involved in the ion-pair production mechanism and indicates the existence of two nearly degenerate continuum resonances possessing different symmetries, which can decay by coupling to ion-pair states of the same total symmetry through internal conversion.

We present an experimental study on the photoionization dynamics of nonresonant one-color two-photon single valence ionization of neutral argon atoms. Using 9.3-eV photons produced via high harmonic generation and a three-dimensional momentum imaging spectrometer, we detect the photoelectrons and ions produced from nonresonant two-photon ionization in coincidence. Photoionization from the 3p orbital produces a photoelectron scattering wave function with p- and f-partial-wave components, which interfere and result in a photoelectron angular distribution with peak amplitude perpendicular to the vacuum ultraviolet polarization. The comparison between the present results and the two previous sets of theoretical calculations [Phys. Rev. A 44, 324 (1991)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.44.324, and J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Phys. 16, 2737 (1983)JPAMA40022-370010.1088/0022-3700/16/15/016] indicates that electron-electron correlation contributes appreciably to the two-photon ionization dynamics.

We report a novel experimental technique to investigate ultrafast dynamics in photoexcited molecules by probing the 3rd-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. A non-collinear 3-pulse scheme is developed to probe the ultrafast dynamics of excited electronic states using the optical Kerr effect. Optical homodyne and optical heterodyne detections are demonstrated to measure the 3rd-order nonlinear optical response for the S1 excited state of liquid nitrobenzene, which is populated by 2-photon absorption of a 780 nm 40 fs excitation pulse.

We investigate ultrafast dynamics of the lowest singlet excited electronic state in liquid nitrobenzene using ultrafast transient polarization spectroscopy, extending the well-known technique of optical Kerr effect spectroscopy to excited electronic states. The third-order nonlinear response of the excited molecular ensemble is measured using a pair of femtosecond pulses following a third femtosecond pulse that populates the S1 excited state. By measuring this response, which is highly sensitive to details of the excited state character and structure, as a function of time delays between the three pulses involved, we extract the dephasing time of the wave packet on the excited state. The dephasing time, measured as a function of time delay after pump excitation, shows oscillations indicating oscillatory wave packet dynamics on the excited state. From the experimental measurements and supporting theoretical calculations, we deduce that the wave packet completely leaves the S1 state potential energy surface after three traversals of the intersystem crossing between the singlet S1 and triplet T2 states.

We report recent results of mass-resolved anion fragment momentum imaging experiments to investigate dissociative electron attachment to formic acid, for incident energies between 5 eV and 9 eV. A remarkable site-selectivity is found for a resonance at 8.5 eV by comparing anion fragment yields for two deuterated isotopologues of formic acid. This results in an H- fragment from the O-H bond of the transient anion, with negligible contribution from C-H break. In contrast, a lower-energy resonance at 7.1 eV dissociates by C-H or O-H break to produce H- and the neutral radicals HOCO or HCOO.

Controlling the formation of nanoparticles (NPs) by direct laser writing ensures an efficient way of engineering the optical responses of nanocomposite materials through adjusting laser parameters such as power, focusing, and writing speed. The growth of NPs, photo-oxidation, and reduction affect the light absorption by an ensemble of laser-activated NPs. However, those self-consistent processes are not well understood. Previous studies explained the growth or shrinkage of silver NPs by neglecting heat diffusion. It remained unclear, however, how the NP size can be controlled by the laser writing speed. In this work, based on the coupled calculations of size variation, heat diffusion, and light absorption by an ensemble of NPs, we propose a two-dimensional model taking into account the spatial information of size and temperature. The spatial size distribution is revealed to be nonuniform, leading to the transmission inhomogeneity along the laser written lines. This fact is confirmed by the in situ transmission experiments. The performed study also depicts a novel view in which NPs grow ahead of the laser beam center because of the heat diffusion. The nonlinear growth never stops until it exhausts the majority of the free Ag0 in the matrix, while the amount of Ag0 by reduction cannot compensate the consumption. After that, the photo-oxidation dominates the process and finally controls the writing speed dependency of NP's size. The simulations also show that it is not the activation energy of Ag0 diffusion, but the ionization efficiency affects the final NP size, which helps to understand how to improve the laser processing of differently prepared samples.

The electronic and nuclear dynamics in methanol, following 156 nm photoexcitation, are investigated by combining a detailed analysis of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments with electronic structure calculations. The photoexcitation pump pulse is followed by a delayed 260 nm photoionization probe pulse to produce photoelectrons that are analyzed by velocity map imaging. The yields of mass-resolved ions, measured with similar experimental conditions, are found to exhibit the same time-dependence as specific photoelectron spectral features. Energy-resolved signal onset and decay times are extracted from the measured photoelectron spectra to achieve high temporal resolution, beyond the 20 fs pump and probe pulse durations. When combined with ab initio calculations of selected cuts through the excited state potential energy surfaces, this information allows the dynamics of the transient excited molecule, which exhibits multiple nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom, to be tracked on its intrinsic few-femtosecond time scale. Within 15 fs of photoexcitation, we observe nuclear motion on the initially bound photoexcited 21A″ (S2) electronic state, through a conical intersection with the 11A' (S3) state, which reveals paths to photodissociation following C-O stretch and C-O-H angle opening.

New photoresists are needed to advance extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. The tailored design of efficient photoresists is enabled by a fundamental understanding of EUV induced chemistry. Processes that occur in the resist film after absorption of an EUV photon are discussed, and a new approach to study these processes on a fundamental level is described. The processes of photoabsorption, electron emission, and molecular fragmentation were studied experimentally in the gas-phase on analogs of the monomer units employed in chemically amplified EUV resists. To demonstrate the dependence of the EUV absorption cross section on selective light harvesting substituents, halogenated methylphenols were characterized employing the following techniques. Photoelectron spectroscopy was utilized to investigate kinetic energies and yield of electrons emitted by a molecule. The emission of Auger electrons was detected following photoionization in the case of iodo-methylphenol. Mass-spectrometry was used to deduce the molecular fragmentation pathways following electron emission and atomic relaxation. To gain insight on the interaction of emitted electrons with neutral molecules in a condensed film, the fragmentation pattern of neutral gas-phase molecules, interacting with an electron beam, was studied and observed to be similar to EUV photon fragmentation. Below the ionization threshold, electrons were confirmed to dissociate iodo-methylphenol by resonant electron attachment.

Understanding interfacial charge-transfer processes on the atomic level is crucial to support the rational design of energy-challenge relevant systems such as solar cells, batteries, and photocatalysts. A femtosecond time-resolved core-level photoelectron spectroscopy study is performed that probes the electronic structure of the interface between ruthenium-based N3 dye molecules and ZnO nanocrystals within the first picosecond after photoexcitation and from the unique perspective of the Ru reporter atom at the center of the dye. A transient chemical shift of the Ru 3d inner-shell photolines by (2.3 ± 0.2) eV to higher binding energies is observed 500 fs after photoexcitation of the dye. The experimental results are interpreted with the aid of ab initio calculations using constrained density functional theory. Strong indications for the formation of an interfacial charge-transfer state are presented, providing direct insight into a transient electronic configuration that may limit the efficiency of photoinduced free charge-carrier generation.

We present state-selective measurements on the + H+ and NH+ + H+ + H dissociation channels following single-photon double ionization at 61.5 eV of neutral NH3, where the two photoelectrons and two cations are measured in coincidence using 3D momentum imaging. Three dication electronic states are identified to contribute to the + H+ dissociation channel, where the excitation in one of the three states undergoes intersystem crossing prior to dissociation, producing a cold fragment. In contrast, the other two states directly dissociate, producing a ro-vibrationally excited fragment with roughly 1 eV of internal energy. The NH+ + H+ + H channel is fed by direct dissociation from three intermediate dication states, one of which is shared with the + H+ channel. We find evidence of autoionization contributing to each of the double ionization channels. The distributions of the relative emission angle between the two photoelectrons, as well as the relative angle between the recoil axis of the molecular breakup and the polarization vector of the ionizing field, are also presented to provide insight on both the photoionization and photodissociation mechanisms for the different dication states.
