1. Low-cost quantum mechanical descriptors for data efficient skin sensitization QSAR models

Abstract

Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship modelling methodologies need to incorporate relevant mechanistic information to have high predictive performance and validity. Electrophilic reactivity is a common mechanistic feature of skin sensitization endpoints which could be concisely characterized with electronic descriptors which is key to enabling the modelling of small datasets in this domain. However, quantum mechanical methodologies have previously featured high computational costs which would exclude the use of large datasets. Consequently, we investigate the use of electronic descriptors calculated using the Hartree Fock with 3 corrections (Hf-3c) method, a low-cost ab initio methodology that has higher chemical accuracy than previous semiempirical methodologies for modelling in vitro skin sensitization assay outcomes. We also model the Ames assay as a surrogate for determining skin sensitization outcomes. The quantum chemical descriptors calculated using the Hf-3c method with conductor-like polarizable continuum model (CPCM) implicit solvation found improved QSAR model performance for the in vitro Ames (n = 6049, 0.770 AUC), KeratinoSens (n = 164, 0.763 AUC), and Direct Peptide Reactivity Assay (n = 122, 0.750 AUC) datasets, with their combination producing high predictive performance for unseen in vivo Local Lymph Node Assay (n = 86, 0.789 AUC) and Human Repeated Insult Patch Test (n = 86, 0.791 AUC) assay toxicant outcomes.

2. The first-order structural phase transition at low-temperature in GaPt$_{5}$P and its rapid enhancement with pressure

Abstract

Single crystals of XPt$_{5}$P (X = Al, Ga, and In) were grown from a Pt-P solution at high temperatures, and ambient-pressure measurements of temperature-dependent magnetization, resistivity, and X-ray diffraction were made. Also, the ambient-pressure Hall resistivity and temperature-dependent resistance under pressure were measured on GaPt$_{5}$P. All three compounds have tetragonal $P4/mmm$ crystal structure at room-temperature with metallic transport and weak diamagnetism over the $2-300$~K temperature range. Surprisingly, at ambient pressure, both the transport and magnetization measurements on GaPt$_{5}$P show a step-like feature in $70-90$~K region suggesting a possible structural phase transition, and no such features were observed in (Al/In)Pt$_{5}$P. Both the hysteretic nature and sharpness of the feature suggest the first-order transition, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements provided further details of the structural transition with a crystal symmetry likely different than $P4/mmm$ below transition. The transition is characterized by anisotropic changes in the lattice parameters, a volume collapse, and satellite peaks at two distinct wave-vectors. Density functional theory calculations present phonon softening as a possible driving mechanism. Additionally, the structural transition temperature increases rapidly with increasing pressure, reaching room temperature by $\sim 2.2$~GPa, highlighting the high degree of pressure sensitivity and fragile nature of GaPt$_{5}$P room-temperature structure. Although the volume collapse and extreme pressure sensitivity suggest chemical pressure should drive a similar structural change in AlPt$_{5}$P, with smaller unit cell dimensions and volume, its structure is found to be $P4/mmm$ as well. Overall, GaPt$_{5}$P stands out as a sole member of the 1-5-1 family of compounds with a temperature-driven structural change., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

CePd3S4 exhibits interplay between ferromagnetism (FM), quadrupolar order, and the Kondo effect at low temperatures with a FM transition temperature that is much higher than the value expected from the de Gennes scaling of the heavier RPd3S4 compounds. In this work, we investigated the electrical transport and magnetic properties of CePd3S4 under pressure up through 12 GPa so as to better understand the interplay between electronic and magnetic phases in this material. Our findings show that the low pressure FM state is suddenly replaced by a new magnetically ordered phase that is most likely antiferromagnetic that spans from ~ 7 GPa to ~ 11 GPa. Whereas this could be described as an example of avoided quantum criticality, given that clear changes in resistance and Hall data are detected near 6.3 GPa for all temperatures below 300 K, it is also possible that the change in ground state is a response to a pressure induced change in structure. The lack of any discernible change in the pressure dependence of the room temperature unit cell parameter/volume across this whole pressure range suggests that this change in structure is either more subtle than could be detected by our measurements (i.e. development of weak, new wave vector) or the transition is electronic (such as a Lifshitz transition)., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, 74 references

Abstract

We present a comprehensive study of the mixed valent compound, EuPd3S4, by electrical transport, X-ray diffraction, time-domain 151Eu synchrotron M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements under high pressure. The electrical transport measurements show that the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, TN, increases rapidly from 2.8 K at ambient pressure to 23.5 K at ~19 GPa and plateaus between ~19 and ~29 GPa after which no anomaly associated with TN is detected. A pressure-induced first order structural transition from cubic to tetragonal is observed, with a rather broad coexistence region (~20 GPa to ~32 GPa) that corresponds to the TN plateau. M\"ossbauer spectroscopy measurements show a clear valence transition from approximately 50:50 Eu2+:Eu3+ to fully Eu3+ at ~28 GPa, consistent with the vanishing of the magnetic order at the same pressure. X-ray absorption data show a transition to a fully trivalent state at a similar pressure. Our results show that pressure first greatly enhances TN, most likely via enhanced hybridization between the Eu 4f states and the conduction band, and then, second, causes a structural phase transition that coincides with the conversion of the europium to a fully trivalent state., Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures in main manuscript, 10 figures in SI

Abstract

The appearance of spontaneous charge order in chemical systems is often associated with the emergence of novel, and useful, properties. Here we show through single crystal diffraction that the Eu ions in the mixed valent metal EuPd$_3$S$_4$ undergo long-range charge ordering at $T_{\mathrm{CO}} = 340 \mathrm{~K}$ resulting in simple cubic lattices of Eu$^{2+}$ ($J = 7/2$) and Eu$^{3+}$ ($J = 0$) ions. As only one of the two sublattices has a non-magnetic ground state, the charge order results in the emergence of remarkably simple G-type antiferromagnetic order at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 2.85(6) \mathrm{~K}$, observed in magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction. Application of a $0.3 \mathrm{~T}$ field is sufficient to induce a spin flop transition to a magnetically polarized, but still charge ordered, state. Density functional theory calculations show that this charge order also modifies the electronic degeneracies present in the material: without charge order, EuPd$_3$S$_4$ is an example of a double Dirac material containing 8-fold degenerate electronic states, greater than the maximum degeneracy of six possible in molecular systems. The symmetry reduction from charge order transmutes 8-fold double Dirac states into 4-fold Dirac states, a degeneracy that can be preserved even in the presence of the magnetic order. Our results show not only how charge order can be used to produce interesting magnetic lattices, but also how it can be used to engineer controlled degeneracies in electronic states., Comment: 33 pages, 23 figures

18. Cute Men in Contemporary Japan

Abstract

One of my first experiences of living in Japan was noticing how very different it was to be a man – to dress the part. Japanese men seemed to have a freedom to be decorative, as though they had skipped Flügel’s (1930) ‘Great Masculine Renunciation’ and its prohibition on sartorial expressions of male vanity. But more than socially sanctioned male display there was another aesthetic at work, that of cuteness, which men also seemed free to use in their clothing and styling choices. Maturity never seemed to be a dress imperative; men could use this cuteness unreservedly. In Japanese, kawaii means cute or adorable, and it is probably the most commonly used word in the country: ubiquitous and affirming. Donald Richie noted, ‘one cannot, in Japan, escape from the cartoon, the comic book-atmosphere, the cute’ (2003: 53). And it would seem to remain anecdotally true today that the cute is still everywhere in Japan. To many it would appear to be an aesthetic preference that has always existed in Japanese popular culture; yet, this chapter will trace the beginnings of the modern manifestation of the aesthetic of kawaii in Japan to the early 1970s, a period immediately following significant political and social unrest. Though some aspects can be traced back, especially its prevalence in manga and anime, this is certainly the period when it fully entered fashion and self-styling. While the development of kawaii and its political meaning from the late 1960s has been extensively studied (Kinsella 1995), particularly with regard to women, and the postwar reconceptualization of masculinity also has been extensively studied (McLelland 2000), this chapter aims to explore how this aesthetic of kawaii contributed to these new forms of masculinity and how the internal logics of the aesthetic itself have changed with time.

32. Cute Fashion: The Social Strategies and Aesthetics of Kawaii

Abstract

This chapter explores the beginnings of the modern manifestation of the aesthetic of kawaii to the early 1970s, a period following significant political and social unrest. In Japanese, kawaii derived from the phrase, "kawahayushi," meaning a flushed face and implying embarrassment, and came to mean able to be loved, adorable, or cute. The difficulty in determining exactly what cute is, however, lies in the overlap of an adaptive evolutionary strategy and a constructed social strategy. One thing that kawaii fashion does, however, is destabilize the distinctions of high and low by holding up a mirror to social and cultural structures that claim the space of maturity and seriousness by being deliberately neither. Just as the aesthetic of cool ignores mainstream tastes, so, too, kawaii does not directly enter into or challenge mainstream cultural and aesthetic values but establishes its own values and aesthetics by ignoring them.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, version 5 (DSM-5) definition of agoraphobia (AG) as an independent diagnostic entity makes it timely to re-examine the epidemiology of AG. Study objective was to present representative data on the characteristics of individuals who meet DSM-IV criteria for AG (AG without a history of panic disorder [PD] and PD with AG) but not DSM-5 criteria, DSM-5 but not DSM-IV criteria, or both sets of criteria. METHODS: Population-based surveys from the World Mental Health Survey Initiative including adult respondents (n = 136,357) from 27 countries across the world. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used to assess AG and other disorders. RESULTS: Lifetime and 12-month prevalence estimates of DSM-5 AG (1.5% and 1.0%) were comparable to DSM-IV (1.4% and 0.9%). Of respondents meeting criteria in either system, 57.1% met criteria in both, while 24.2% met criteria for DSM-5 only and 18.8% for DSM-IV only. Severe role impairment due to AG was reported by a lower proportion of respondents who met criteria only for DSM-IV AG (30.4%) than those with both DSM-5 and DSM-IV AG (44.0%; ? (2) (1) = 4.7; P = 0.031). The proportion of cases with any comorbidity was lower among respondents who met criteria only for DSM-IV AG (78.7%) than those who met both sets (92.9%; ? (2) (1) = 14.5; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This first large survey shows that, compared to the DSM-IV, the DSM-5 identifies a substantial group of new cases with AG, while the prevalence rate remains stable at 1.5%. Severity and comorbidity are higher in individuals meeting DSM-5 AG criteria compared with individuals meeting DSM-IV AG criteria only.

42. Notch sensitivity of first-year sea ice

Abstract

Tests were carried out in Resolute NWT, Canada, (74 degrees 43'N, 95 degrees 04'W) on first-year sea ice to determine for the first time the notch sensitivity of first-year sea ice. A displacement feedback control was used on a soft portable testing frame to apply a calculated strain rate of 10 to the -3 s to the -1 at the extreme tensile fiber of the beam. An ice beam 0.1 m x 0.1 m in cross section, 1.0 m long was loaded in four-point bending, the constant moment region was 0.5 m long. In this region three identical cracks were prepared with lengths of 0 to 50% of the thickness of the beam. Beams with prepared cracks 1.5 mm long fractured at sites other than a prepared crack in nine out of 16 samples. In the 81 other beams, the crack initiated in the first prepared crack 29 times, in the second 32, and in the crack last sharpened, 20 times. The nominal failure strength was calculated using the unbroken ligament as the thickness, and it dropped to one-half the tensile strength at a/w = 0.25, but the fracture toughness did not drop from 190 kNm to the -3/2 to 124 kNm to the -3/2 until a/w = 0.5.

Abstract

Issues. Alcohol and other drug use among adolescents is a serious concern, and effective prevention is critical. Research indicates that expanding school-based prevention programs to include parenting components could increase prevention outcomes. This paper aims to identify and describe existing combined student- and parent-based programs for the prevention of alcohol and other drug use to evaluate the efficacy of existing programs. Approach. The PsycINFO, Medline, Central Register of Controlled trials and Cochrane databases were searched in April 2015 and additional articles were obtained from reference lists. Studies were included if they evaluated a combined universal intervention for students (aged 11–18 years old) and their parents designed to prevent alcohol and/or other drug use, and were delivered in a school-based setting. Risk of bias was assessed by two independent reviewers. Because of the heterogeneity of the included studies, it was not possible to conduct a meta-analysis and a qualitative description of the studies was provided. Key Findings. From a total of 1654 screened papers, 22 research papers met inclusion criteria, which included 13 trials of 10 programs.Of these, nine programs demonstrated significant intervention effects in terms of delaying or reducing adolescent alcohol and/or other drug use in at least one trial. Conclusion. This is the first review of combined student- and parent-based interventions to prevent and reduce alcohol and other drug use. Whilst existing combined student- and parent-based programs have shown promising results, key gaps in the literature have been identified and are discussed in the context of the development of future prevention programs.

Abstract

Importance: Previous research has documented significant variation in the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) depending on the type of traumatic experience (TE) and history of TE exposure, but the relatively small sample sizes in these studies resulted in a number of unresolved basic questions. Objective: To examine disaggregated associations of type of TE history with PTSD in a large cross-national community epidemiologic data set. Design, setting, and participants: TheWorld Health OrganizationWorld Mental Health surveys assessed 29 TE types (lifetime exposure, age at first exposure) with DSM-IV PTSD that was associated with 1 randomly selected TE exposure (the random TE) for each respondent. Surveys were administered in 20 countries (n = 34 676 respondents) from 2001 to 2012. Data were analyzed from October 1, 2015, to September 1, 2016. Main outcomes and measures: Prevalence of PTSD assessed with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Results: Among the 34 676 respondents (55.4%[SE, 0.6%] men and 44.6%[SE, 0.6%] women; mean [SE] age, 43.7 [0.2] years), lifetime TE exposure was reported by a weighted 70.3%of respondents (mean [SE] number of exposures, 4.5 [0.04] among respondents with any TE). Weighted (by TE frequency) prevalence of PTSD associated with random TEs was 4.0%. Odds ratios (ORs) of PTSD were elevated for TEs involving sexual violence (2.7; 95%CI, 2.0-3.8) and witnessing atrocities (4.2; 95%CI, 1.0-17.8). Prior exposure to some, but not all, same-type TEs was associated with increased vulnerability (eg, physical assault; OR, 3.2; 95%CI, 1.3-7.9) or resilience (eg, participation in sectarian violence; OR, 0.3; 95%CI, 0.1-0.9) to PTSD after the random TE. The finding of earlier studies that more general history of TE exposure was associated with increased vulnerability to PTSD across the full range of random TE types was replicated, but this generalized vulnerability was limited to prior TEs involving violence, including participation in organized violence (OR, 1.3; 95%CI, 1.0-1.6), experience of physical violence (OR, 1.4; 95%CI, 1.2-1.7), rape (OR, 2.5; 95%CI, 1.7-3.8), and other sexual assault (OR, 1.6; 95%CI, 1.1-2.3). Conclusion and relevance: The World Mental Health survey findings advance understanding of the extent to which PTSD risk varies with the type of TE and history of TE exposure. Previous findings about the elevated PTSD risk associated with TEs involving assaultive violence was refined by showing agreement only for repeated occurrences. Some types of prior TE exposures are associated with increased resilience rather than increased vulnerability, connecting the literature on TE history with the literature on resilience after adversity. These results are valuable in providing an empirical rationale for more focused investigations of these specifications in future studies. © 2017 American Medical Association. publishersversion published

Copyright © 2016 by the American Academy of Pediatrics. BACKGROUND: Parents are a major supplier of alcohol to adolescents, often initiating use with sips. Despite harms of adolescent alcohol use, research has not addressed the antecedents of such parental supply. This study investigated the prospective associations between familial, parental, peer, and adolescent characteristics on parental supply of sips. METHODS: Participants were 1729 parent-child dyads recruited from Grade 7 classes, as part of the Australian Parental Supply of Alcohol Longitudinal Study. Data are from baseline surveys (Time 1) and 1-year follow-up (Time 2). Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regressions tested prospective associations between Time 1 familial, parental, peer, and adolescent characteristics and Time 2 parental supply. RESULTS: In the fully adjusted model, parental supply was associated with increased parentreport of peer substance use (odds ratio [OR] = 1.20, 95% confidence ratio [CI], 1.08-1.34), increased home alcohol access (OR = 1.07, 95% CI, 1.03-1.11), and lenient alcohol-specific rules (OR=0.88, 95% CI, 0.78-0.99). CONCLUSIONS: Parents who perceived that their child engaged with substance-using peers were more likely to subsequently supply sips of alcohol. Parents may believe supply of a small quantity of alcohol will protect their child from unsupervised alcohol use with peers. It is also possible that parental perception of peer substance use may result in parents believing that this is a normative behavior for their child's age group, and in turn that supply is also normative. Further research is required to understand the impacts of such supply, even in small quantities, on adolescent alcohol use trajectories.
