It was originally intended that this thesis should present an account of spermatogenesis in one species of a sub -Order of insects, the Hemip- tera-Heteroptera, and a comparison of-five families of the same sub -order to investigate the degree of correlation between karyology and taxonomy within the group. The chromosome behaviour of the species chosen, Corixa punctata, proved to be so unusual as to justify a detailed study from a viewpoint unconnected with the original theme. The same kind of behaviour, namely the fusion of non- homologous chromosomes, was subsequently 3 observed in two other species of the same family. One paper is therefore devoted to the description of this phenomenon, while a second deals with the comparative cytology of the Cimicidae, Antho- coridae, Capsidae and Corixidae.
