Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of biomaterials in bone healing of critical bone defects created by piezoelectric surgery in rat calvaria. Method and materials: Histomorphologic analysis was performed to assess bone regeneration and tissue response. Fifty animals were randomized into five groups with one of the following treatments: Control group (n = 10), spontaneous blood clot formation with no bone fill; BO group (Bio-Oss, Geistlich Pharma; n = 10), defects were filled with bovine medullary bone substitute; BF group (Bonefill, Bionnovation; n = 10), defects were filled with bovine cortical bone substitute; hydroxyapatite group (n = 10), defects were filled with hydroxyapatite; calcium sulfate group (n = 10), defects were filled with calcium sulfate. Five animals from each group were euthanized at 30 and 45 days. The histomorphometry calculated the percentage of the new bone formation in the bone defect. Results: All data obtained were evaluated statistically considering P < .05 as statistically significant. The results demonstrated the potential of all biomaterials for enhancing bone regeneration. The findings showed no statistical differences between all the biomaterials at 30 and 45 days including the control group without bone grafting. Conclusion: In conclusion, the tested biomaterials presented an estimated capacity of osteoconduction, statistically nonsignificant between them. In addition, the selection of biomaterial should consider the specific clinical aspect, resorption rates, size of the particle, and desired bone healing responses. It is important to emphasize that in some cases, using no bone filler might provide comparable results with reduced cost and possible complications questioning the very frequent use of ridge presentation procedures. Cranial sutures separate neighboring skull bones and are sites of bone growth. A key question is how osteogenic activity is controlled to promote bone growth while preventing aberrant bone fusions during skull expansion. Using single-cell transcriptomics, lineage tracing, and mutant analysis in zebrafish, we uncover key developmental transitions regulating bone formation at sutures during skull expansion. In particular, we identify a subpopulation of mesenchyme cells in the mid-suture region that upregulate a suite of genes including BMP antagonists (e.g. grem1a) and pro-angiogenic factors. Lineage tracing with grem1a:nlsEOS reveals that this mid-suture subpopulation is largely non-osteogenic. Moreover, combinatorial mutation of BMP antagonists enriched in this mid-suture subpopulation results in increased BMP signaling in the suture, misregulated bone formation, and abnormal suture morphology. These data reveal establishment of a non-osteogenic mesenchyme population in the mid-suture region that restricts bone formation through local BMP antagonism, thus ensuring proper suture morphology.

Considering the lack of consensus related to the impact of selective IL-6 receptor inhibition on bone remodeling and the scarcity of reports, especially on large bone defects, this study proposed to evaluate the biological impact of the selective inhibitor of interleukin-6 receptor (tocilizumab) in an experimental model of critical calvarial defect in rats. In this preclinical and in vivo study, 24 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups (n=12/group): defect treated with collagen sponge (CG) and defect treated with collagen sponge associated with 2 mg/kg tocilizumab (TCZ). The defect in the parietal bone was created using an 8-mm diameter trephine drill. After 90 days, the animals were euthanized, and tissue samples (skull caps) were evaluated through micro-CT, histological, immunohistochemistry, cytokines, and RT-qPCR analyses. Tocilizumab reduced mononuclear inflammatory infiltration (P0.05). The bone cells (osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes) in the defect area were similar in both groups (P>0.05). Tocilizumab reduced inflammatory cytokines, decreased osteogenic protein, and increased proteases in a critical bone defect in rats. Ninety days after the local application of tocilizumab in the cranial defect, we did not find a significant formation of bone tissue compared with a collagen sponge.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to report the surgical and medical management of generalized chronic maxillofacial infection with multiple intra- and extraoral draining tracts in a dog. CASE SUMMARY: A 6 years-old, male neutered pit bull terrier dog underwent a staged procedure. First, a diagnostic work-up including hematologic and biochemical analysis, conventional computed tomography (CT) with contrast of the skull, and a rhinoscopic evaluation of the draining tracts was performed. Samples were obtained for histopathological, microbial, and fungal testing. Second, a 4 week course of antimicrobials based on culture and sensitivity results was administered. Third, an extraoral approach to soft tissue reconstruction was accomplished as a first stage in the repair process. Finally, an intraoral approach to repair the oronasal fistulous draining tracts was performed. A 6 months follow-up skull CT revealed various stages of repair and remodeling and adequate soft tissue healing. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A staged procedure is a suitable option to treat chronic and generalized frontal and maxillary infection with multiple intra- and extraoral fistulous draining tracts in dogs.

The diversity of vertebrate skeletons is often attributed to adaptations to distinct ecological factors such as diet, locomotion, and sensory environment. Although the adaptive evolution of skull, appendicular skeleton, and vertebral column is well studied in vertebrates, comprehensive investigations of all skeletal components simultaneously are rarely performed. Consequently, we know little of how modes of evolution differ among skeletal components. Here, we tested if ecological and phylogenetic effects led to distinct modes of evolution among the cranial, appendicular and vertebral regions in extant carnivoran skeletons. Using multivariate evolutionary models, we found mosaic evolution in which only the mandible, hindlimb and posterior (i.e. last thoracic and lumbar) vertebrae showed evidence of adaptation towards ecological regimes whereas the remaining skeletal components reflect clade-specific evolutionary shifts. We hypothesize that the decoupled evolution of individual skeletal components may have led to the origination of distinct adaptive zones and morphologies among extant carnivoran families that reflect phylogenetic hierarchies. Overall, our work highlights the importance of examining multiple skeletal components simultaneously in ecomorphological analyses. Ongoing work integrating the fossil and palaeoenvironmental record will further clarify deep-time drivers that govern the carnivoran diversity we see today and reveal the complexity of evolutionary processes in multicomponent systems.

The transverse dimensions of internasal and nasopremaxillary sutures in rats were assessed at different ages and following different dietary functional demands.Eighty‐four male Wistar rats were divided into two groups fed either a hard or a soft diet from 4 weeks of age, and sacrificed at 4 weeks (baseline: n = 12),16 weeks (n = 24), 26 weeks (n = 24), or 38 weeks (n = 24) of age. High‐resolution micro‐computed tomograms of the internasal and left nasopremaxillary sutures were obtained with 10 µm voxel size and 5 × 5 mm field of view. The endocranial and ectocranial suture widths, the mean suture width, and the suture height were measured. Linear regression analysis was used to estimate the effects of age and type of diet on suture dimensions. Internasal and nasopremaxillary suture dimensions were influenced by age, with a generally lower width and a larger height in the older animal. Regarding diet consistency, internasal suture widths were on average larger in the hard‐diet group (e.g., mean suture width 43 µm in the hard‐ versus 30 µm in the soft‐diet group at 26 weeks). The skull has long been an obstacle for transcranial ultrasound therapy and neuromodulation, leading to waveform distortion and focal points misalignment. In this work, we propose a dual-focus transcranial ultrasound focusing method for ex vivo human skulls to bridge this barrier, which is demonstrated by using a 2 MHz single-element transducer placed outside the occipital bone, coupled to a 3D-printed acoustic holographic lens. The experimental results show that the proposed method allows for achieving high-precision single- and dual-focus ultrasound focusing through human skulls with the maximum target registration error less than one wavelength in water. The in-target ratio spans a range from 72% to 92%, with an average of 80.7%, while the out-of-target ratio varies from 0% to 43.9%, with an average of 18.3%. Additionally, the focal spots are substantially free of the skull-induced distortion, closely matching the ideal ones, and maintain a clearly identifiable circular focus shape. This study analyzes the effects of bioclimate and masticatory factors on the regional variability of human cranial forms across 150 ethnic groups worldwide. Morphometric variables were generated using principal component analysis applied to 3D homologous models. Relationships between cranial form and bioclimate (temperature and precipitation) and masticatory factors (infratemporal space) were tested considering sampling bias due to past population movements during the late Pleistocene and/or early- to mid-Holocene. Cranial size correlated with thermal conditions, consistent with Bergmann's rule. The length/breadth proportion of the neurocranium aligned with Allen's rule for thermal adaptation, while no relationship with masticatory stress was found. Facial form responded to either climate or masticatory conditions, although the primary factor was unclear due to the high correlation between stresses. However, masticatory stress was identified as an equally significant factor behind facial flatness in cold regions, else than the effect of Allen's rule. High narrowness of nasal and orbital openings correlated significantly with cold temperatures and cranial size, suggesting not only functional but also allometric effect. This study demonstrated the complexity of environmental influences on cranial form diversity, nonetheless suggested reduction of selective pressure on cranial form caused by natural environmental stress due to the development of civilization. The aim of this article is to propose unsupervised classification methods for size-and-shape considering two-dimensional images (planar shapes). We present new methods based on hypothesis testing and the K-means algorithm. We also propose combinations of algorithms using ensemble methods: bagging and boosting. We consider simulated data in three scenarios in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed methods. The numerical results have indicated that for the data sets, when the centroid sizes change, the performance of the algorithms improves. In addition, bagging-based algorithms outperform their basic versions. Moreover, two real-world datasets have been considered: great ape skull and mice vertebrae references. These datasets have different configurations, such as multiple reference points and variability. Bagged K-means and boosted K-means methods achieved the best performance on the datasets. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) represent rare neoplasms, particularly infrequent in the pediatric skull. We present a novel case of a newborn male with a 5 cm right temporal mass and discuss current diagnostic and treatment options for IMTs. A multidisciplinary effort to surgically remove the lesion was successful, and the patient's skull defect healed without neurological deficits. The etiology of IMTs remains elusive, with proposed associations with chromosomal mutations in the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene. Surgical excision remains the primary treatment for IMTs. Promising pharmacological treatments, like Crizotinib, warrant further research into understanding potential alternatives in IMT management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although cranial bones reliably identify the features of mammals, these traits can be affected by sex, population size and seasonality. This paper biometrically analyses the cranial features of the common vole. The research sample consisted of adult (n = 134), subadult (n = 57), of western Slovakia. Overall, software based on the highlighted marks measured 29 cranial features. Significant sexual dimorphism was observed for three features in adult individuals (width of the maxillary tooth row – right side "WMTRR", maximum height of the mandibula excluding coronoid process "AMdm" and coronoid height of the mandibula "AMd") and four features in subadults (length of the tooth row in the maxilla "LOSD", "WMTRR", length of the molar "LoM" and alveolar length of the lower molars "ALLM"). Results showed a significant positive relationship between body weight and cranial size in 18 of the 29 features. They also suggested a weak but significant positive effect of common vole abundance on cranium size (Chitty effect) likewise in 6 of the 29 features. In several cases, this effect affects, in addition to the abundance, the onset of sexual maturity of individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Facial approximation is a technique that involves constructing the facial muscles and applying a suitable facial soft tissue depth (FSTD) dataset. To date, several FSTD studies have been conducted for varying population groups. This study aims to establish a FSTD dataset of an adult Greek population sample for the first time. The facial depths of subjects were measured on 100 head CT scans of 50 male and 50 female subjects aged from 18 to 99. The 3D head and skull models of subjects were segmented in Amira 6.1 by using histogram method. FSTDs were measured at 22 cranial landmarks (5 mid-sagittal, 17 bilateral). The FSTD dataset was generated by considering the age and sex of subjects. The impact of age and sex on the FSTD was limited. Slight inter-population depth variations were reported. Background: Nasal obstruction in humans leads to mouth breathing and subsequent hypoxia in the entire body. Furthermore, nasal obstruction in growing children affects craniofacial growth and development. Objective: To investigate the effects of unilateral nasal obstruction (UNO) on craniofacial growth in mice of different ages, particularly on the morphology of the nasomaxillary complex and mandible. Methods: Mice aged 3, 6 and 12 weeks were selected as representatives of juvenile, adolescent and adult stages, respectively. A total of 30 male C57BL/6J mice (10 mice each at the ages of 3, 6 and 12 weeks) were used in this study for a 3‐week experiment. The mice in each age stage were randomly and evenly assigned to either the control group (C3+3, C6+3 and C12+3) or the experimental group (E3+3, E6+3 and E12+3). The UNO model in experimental group was constructed by plugging the mouse's left nostril, thereby disrupting its normal nasal breathing pattern and inducing hypoxia. The control group underwent the sham procedure. After 3 weeks, the length, width and height of the cranium, nasomaxillary complex and mandible of each group were measured on two‐dimensional images constructed by micro‐computed tomography. Furthermore, the impact of UNO on mouse growth was evaluated through the measurement of femoral length. Results: In juvenile mice, UNO inhibited the growth of cranial width, cranial height and mandibular length. In adolescent mice, UNO impeded the growth of the femoral length, cranial length, nasomaxillary length and mandibular length. In adult mice, no significant negative effects of UNO on craniofacial growth were found. Conclusion: Referring to the experimental results, in addition to actively treating nasal obstruction in patients, it is important to monitor the growth of the mandible in juveniles, as well as the nasomaxillary and mandibular growth in adolescents during orthodontic clinical practice. Correlations between natural geographic boundaries and variations in organisms' morphology have been well-documented in Sulawesi Island, which has a unique geological history and hundreds of endemic species. One of the widely distributed species of small mammals is Sulawesi giant rat (Paruromys dominator). Considering the geographic condition of Sulawesi, this species is a suitable model for studying geographic influences on morphological change. Moreover, there are no comprehensive studies on this species. Previous studies cannot fully explain the variability due to the lack of representative samples. Here, we measure 19 skull characteristics for 131 adult complete-skull specimens from six distribution areas in Sulawesi. We investigate the variation in skull characteristics using agglomeration nesting (AGNES) for cluster analysis and the standardized major axis (SMA) for allometry analysis. Our results show that P. dominator can be categorized into two groups, but distribution areas, elevation, or sex do not influence those. P. dominator in group 1 had a larger skull size than group 2. The two groups can be distinguished from four characteristics: breadth of mesopterygoid fossa (BMF), breadth of first upper molar (BM1), length of the auditory bulla (LB), and breadth of incisive foramina (BIF). The BMF and BM1 are related to mastication, and the LB and BIF are related to communication. We propose that the skull variation of this species is not correlated with geographical barriers but more clearly correlated with their feeding habits, mating behavior, and ability to escape predation. Craniofacial morphology is extremely diversified within bat phylogeny, however growth and development of the palate in bats remains unstudied. The formation of both midline and bilateral orofacial clefts in laryngeally echolocating bats, morphologically similar to the syndromic and non‐syndromic cleft palate in humans, are not well understood. Developmental series of prenatal samples (n = 128) and adults (n = 10) of eight bat species (two pteropodids, four rhinolophoids, and two yangochiropterans), and two non‐bat mammals (Mus musculus and Erinaceus amurensis), were CT‐scanned and cranial bones forming the upper jaw complex were three‐dimensionally visualised to assess whether differences in palate development can be observed across bat phylogeny. Volumetric data of bones composing the upper jaw complex were measured to quantify palate growth. The premaxilla is relatively reduced in bats compared to other mammals and its shape is heterogeneous depending on the presence and type of orofacial cleft across bat phylogeny. The palatine process of premaxillary bones is lacking in pteropodids and yangochiropterans, whereas the premaxilla is a mobile structure which is only in contact caudally with the maxilla by a fibrous membrane or suture in rhinolophoids. In all bats, maxillary bones progressively extend caudally and palatine bones, in some cases split into three branches, extend caudally so that they are completely fused to another one medially prior to the birth. Ossification of the vomer and fusion of the maxillary and palatine bones occur earlier in rhinolophoids than in pteropodids and yangochiropterans. The vomer ossifies bilaterally from two different ossification centres in yangochiropterans, which is uncommon in other bats and non‐bat mammals. Analysis of ontogenetic allometric trajectories of the upper jaw complex revealed faster development of maxillary, vomer, and palatine bones in yangochiropterans compared to other bats, especially rhinolophoids. Ancestral state reconstruction revealed that yangochiropterans have a higher magnitude of change in ossification rate compared to other bats and E. amurensis a lower magnitude compared to M. musculus and bats. This study provides new evidence of heterochronic shifts in craniofacial development and growth across bat phylogeny that can improve understanding of the developmental differences characterising nasal and oral emission strategies. The lion (Panthera leo) was extirpated from the Cape region of South Africa during the mid-nineteenth century. Whilst historically classified as a distinct subspecies known as the Cape lion (P. l. melanochaita), recent molecular studies challenge the distinctiveness of this population, suggesting that it represents the southernmost population of the species' Southern Clade. The Cape lion is often cited as having a distinctive skull morphology, which has justified its subspecific classification, but only a limited number of specimens have been available for examination, so that the Cape lion's skull morphology has not been satisfactorily understood. In this study we collected morphometric data from a greatly enlarged sample of 22 Cape lion skulls, including 12 adults, constituting the largest sample size analysed for this possible subspecies. The results suggest that (1) morphological characteristics of the skull previously thought to distinguish the Cape lion are not diagnostic, and (2) nor is the skull morphology of male and female Cape lions distinct from that of males and females of other southern African lions. Our results independently support those based on molecular investigations, which suggest that the Cape lion was not distinct from other lions within the Southern Clade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study aims to compare the biomechanics of six zygomatic implants (ZIs) and dental implants (DIs) combined with four ZIs with different maxilla defects. Methods: Three-dimensional constructs of the ZIs, DIs human skulls, and maxillary prostheses were created using SolidWorks Software (Version 2015, Dassault Systems SolidWorks Corporation, Waltham, MA, USA). Eight finite element models of the skull with four different alveolar defect types (0–4) were constructed. Type 0: No defect; Type 1: Bilateral posterior defects; Type 2: Right posterior defect; Type 3: Anterior and left posterior defects; Type 4: Bilateral posterior and anterior defects. In two models with the same defect type (for defect types 0–2), six ZIs or two DIs combined with four ZIs were inserted into the maxilla. Six ZIs were inserted in the maxilla models with defect types 3 and 4. Vertical (150 N) and masseteric (300 N) loads were simulated on the prosthesis. The maximum Von Mises stress in the implants/surrounding bone and bone deformation were evaluated. Results: The maximum Von Mises stresses in bone/implant were found highest in the defect type 2 model with four ZIs combined with two DIs. The lowest maximum Von Mises stress for bone was detected in the model with defect type 0 and with six ZIs. • Describes a rare 'flat-headed' juvenile specimen of pachycephalosaurid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of West Texas, USA. • Adds critical new taxonomic comparative material representing a juvenile semaphoront within the pachycephalosaur ontogenetic continuum. • Helps resolve taxonomy and affinities among the pachycephalosaur record from North America. • Morphometric analysis supports the specimen as pertaining to a new 'southern' species of Stegoceras. • Describes an unusual heterochronic growth progression among pachycephalosaurs which seemingly represents a new taxonomic characteristic. • Represents a vital 'southern' dinosaur paleofaunal datum for North America. A juvenile pachycephalosaur frontal from the upper Aguja Formation (Late Cretaceous: middle Campanian) of West Texas, USA is unusually thin dorsoventrally, even compared to 'flat' frontals of young individuals pertaining to other pachycephalosaur taxa. The specimen is most comparable morphologically and morphometrically to Stegoceras validum. However, it is much thinner than any 'juvenile' example of that species, and also differs in the elongate form and radial arrangement of the surficial tubercles, as well as occurrence of radial grooves along the lateral margins of the bone. Such differences are unlikely a reflection of intraspecific variation. Instead, the Aguja specimen likely represents a previously unknown juvenile semaphoront from the southern Western Interior, referred herein to Stegoceras sp. and likely extends the distribution of this widespread Campanian genus. A morphometric evaluation suggests that the holotype specimen of Texacephale langstoni , also from the Aguja Formation, is probably an adult semaphoront of Stegoceras. However, both specimens represent different ontogenetic stages with dissimilar morphologies and so their potential conspecifity remains equivocal. The new Aguja specimen described herein likely represents a 'paedomorphic' Campanian pachycephalosaur – one where the onset of doming is displaced until well into ontogeny – a heterochronic attribute Stegoceras sp. shares with S. validum and Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis. Where an adequate ontogenetic sample is available for comparison, other pachycephalosaur taxa do not seem to exhibit a similar growth progression, and so this appears to be a significant taxonomic characteristic. That some pachycephalosaurs delayed doming of the skull roof during growth is enigmatic, but it may have been an expression of sexual dimorphism, an aid in species recognition, or a response to harsh environmental conditions. Arthroleptidae are an ecologically diverse group of sub-Saharan frogs. Arthroleptid tadpoles predominately occur in slow flowing to torrent waters. Their musculoskeletal system and the relationship between tadpole morphology and lifestyle are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the cranial morphology of four arthroleptid tadpoles occurring in different microhabitats: Leptopelis parkeri , Astylosternus occidentalis , Trichobatrachus robustus , and Nyctibates corrugatus. The crania of the tadpoles of A. occidentalis , N. corrugatus , and T. robustus are highly modified relative to L. parkeri , with wide and partly or completely fused cornua trabeculae, a fused cartilago labialis superior, as well as several modifications of the palatoquadrate, such as a broad commissura quadratocranialis and a processus ventralis which expands the surface for the origin of the large m. orbitohyoideus. The processus hyoquadratis is an evolutionary novelty, forming a functional unit together with the ceratohyale in the cranium of N. corrugatus. Finally, we compared the cranial morphology of these arthroleptids to other lotic and non-lotic species. Although the processus ventralis is not a generalized feature of the cranium in lotic species, it is not present in lentic species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The origin of modern crocodylians is rooted in the Cretaceous, but their evolutionary history is obscure because the relationships of outgroups and transitional forms are poorly resolved. Here, we describe a new form, Varanosuchus sakonnakhonensis gen. nov. sp. nov. from the Early Cretaceous of Thailand that fills an evolutionary gap between Paralligatoridae and Atoposauridae, two derived neosuchian lineages with previously unsettled phylogenetic relationships. Three individuals, including a complete skull and associated postcranial remains, allow for a detailed description and phylogenetic analysis. The new taxon is distinguished from all other crocodylomorphs by an association of features, including a narrow altirostral morphology, a dorsal part of the postorbital with an anterolaterally facing edge, a depression on the posterolateral surface of the maxilla, and fully pterygoid-bound choanae. A phylogenetic analysis confirms the monophyly and taxonomic content of Atoposauridae and Paralligatoridae, and we underline the difficulty in reaching a robust definition of Eusuchia. Furthermore, we put forward further arguments related to the putative terrestrial ecology with semi-aquatic affinities of atoposaurids based on their altirostral snout morphology and osteoderm ornamentation. Since morphological traits may overlap among species within a complex, the integration of morphological and mitochondrial data could provide crucial insights for distinguishing species, as observed in fruit-eating bats of the genus Artibeus. Therefore, the application of geometric morphometric (GM) techniques could yield more refined and robust analyses of inter- and intraspecific variations. In this study, we generated two datasets: one with molecular delimitation data based on the barcode region (COI) and the other with cranial size and shape data using GM methods. Our aims were to investigate variations between large and small species within the genus Artibeus , as well as to explore potential factors influencing such variations. The results from species delimitation revealed molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) supporting the morphological identification. Analyses using GM techniques demonstrated significant inter- and intraspecific variations in cranial size and shape among Artibeus species. The combined outcomes suggest the absence of a significant phylogenetic signal influencing skull variation. This scenario indicates that potential historical ecological factors may have directly influenced the cranial morphology of these species, acting as significant selection forces in geographical space and generating intraspecific variations in Artibeus planirostris. Sand cats, Felis margarita, range from northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula to Central Asia. Their apparently discontinuous distribution is recognized as comprising four subspecies. Recent genetic research found little differentiation between subspecies except for the North African form. In this study, 90 skins and 88 skulls were analyzed from the four subspecies. A discriminant function analysis of the scores, ranging from 1 to 4, of four pelage characteristics revealed differentiation between putative subspecies, except between Turkmenian and Pakistani sand cats. Northern African and Arabian sand cats tend to be spotted and striped, while Turkmenian and Pakistani sand cats are less spotted and have a dorsal crest of fur. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) models generated from 21 skull measurements revealed an overlap in morphospace between all subspecies, except for larger Turkmenian sand cats; northern African sand cats were smallest. Therefore, both pelage characteristics and skull morphometrics support up to three subspecies. However, considering recent genetic research, it is likely that two subspecies should be recognized, F. m. margarita from northern Africa and F. m. thinobia from the Arabian Peninsula, and Southwest and Central Asia. Background: Pterion is meeting point of parietal, squamotemporal, greater wing of sphenoid and frontal bones. Certain important cranial structures like middle meningeal artery, Sylvian fissure, middle cerebral artery are related to it which make it an important neurosurgical land mark. Stephanion and euryon are other two Craniometric points on the skull. The pterion varies in shape in different skulls. Aims and objectives: To assess the different shapes of pterion, to measure the distance of pterion from selected Craniometric points. Methodology: Hundred pterions in 50 dry adult skulls of unknown age and gender were studied. Pterion was observed for the shape and pattern of sutures on both sides of each skull and the distance of pterion was measured from the selected Craniometric points (bony land marks) using vernier caliper. Dried intact skulls without any traumatic and pathological defects were included in the study. Results: In our present study, the most common pterionic type was sphenoparietal while as stellate type was the least common type. In our present study we observed the location of pterion from the root of zygomatic arch at a mean distance of 34.26± 3.35 mm and 33.70±3.44 mm on right and left sides respectively with a P value of 0.412461 while as it was located at a mean distance of 33. 44±3.59mm and 34.38± 2.87mm respectively from the right and left frontozygomatic sutures with a P value of 0.151906. The mean distance between pterion and stephanion was42.76± 6.60 mm and 42.74± 6.73 mm on right and left sides respectively with a P value of0.98807. The mean distance between pterion to euryon was48.66±9.87 mm and 50.32± 10.92mm on right and left sides respectively with a P value of 0.427416. Cranial suture closure has long been understood as an indicator of human development and is closely associated with the aging process. Due to this correlation, it has been widely used in forensic and archaeological contexts to estimate the age of unidentified or skeletonized individuals. Several cadaverbased studies have demonstrated the usefulness of the lambdoid suture in age estimation; however, it is not a technique that is commonly applied in routine forensic practice. Age estimation plays a crucial role in developing the biological profile that forensic anthropologists use to help identify unknown deceased individuals. This multicenter study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a novel cranial remolding helmet (baby band2), which is completely custom-made based on the shape of an infant's cranium. The study included 224 full-term infants from moderate to very severe positional plagiocephaly in Japan. Cranial geometry was assessed before and after helmet therapy using a three-dimensional scanner, and changes in the cranial vault asymmetry index (CVAI) were analyzed. The CVAI improved significantly in all patients, with the most significant improvement observed in the most severely affected group [very severe group: −9.1, severe group: −6.6, moderate group: −4.4 (mean values), p < 0.001]. The group that started therapy before the age of 7 months showed greater improvement compared to those who started therapy at the age of 7 months or older; however, both groups demonstrated significant improvement (<7 months group: −6.6, ≥7 months group: −4.4 (mean values), p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in therapy efficacy between the centers (p = 0.402) and sex (p = 0.131). During the study period, helmet therapy did not lead to head circumference stunting, and the incidence of redness with baby band2 was five patients (2.2%). Background and Objectives: This research investigated the morphometric dimensions of the optic foramen (OF), superior orbital fissure (SOF) and inferior orbital fissure (IOF), using indirect measurement techniques such as laser scanning, making it likely the first study of its kind. This study aimed to identify the morphometric variability of the main orbit communications and to highlight the differences between genders. Materials and Methods: The anthropometric study was conducted on sixty dry skulls (120 orbits) of adults aged between 20 and 70 years. Measurements of orbital communications were made using the RS6 laser scanner. The orbital parameters that were investigated are as follows: length and width of the SOF and IOF, and height and width of the OF. Results: In males, the average height of the OF was 8.27 mm and 8.13 mm in females, while the average width of the OF was 6.34 mm in males and 5.83 mm in females. The SOF average length was 21.09 mm in males and 17.58 mm in females. The widths of the SOF in the three thirds (anterior, middle and posterior) in males were 5.14/4.77/7.11 mm and 2.28/3.48/5.80 mm in females. The average length of the IOF was 33.05 mm in males and 32.30 mm in females. The widths of the IOF in the three thirds (anterior, middle and posterior) were 5.61/3.92/4.70 mm in males and 7.24/4.68/4.08 mm in females. Conclusions: The OF height and width were higher in males compared to females. The SOF length and width were higher in males compared to females. The IOF length was higher in males for the right orbit and higher in females for the left orbit. The IOF width for both orbits was higher in females in the anterior and middle third, and higher for males in the posterior third. Evaluation of dry skulls using laser scanning is reliable and recommended for data accuracy. Introduction: Skull infarction is an uncommonly reported complication of sickle cell disease. We aimed to characterize the clinical and imaging features of skull infarction in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease. Methods: We searched the PubMed database for case reports on skull bone infarction in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease. Out of 67 records retrieved, 15 met inclusion criteria, and a 16th case reported by the senior author was included. We extracted and analyzed clinical and imaging data. Results: The most common symptom at onset was headache (88%). Bilateral skull infarction (50%) and parietal bone involvement (82%) were frequent imaging findings. Epidural hematoma developed in 65% of the cases, 30% of patients required drainage, and exchange infusion was reported in 18%. No fatal outcomes were reported. Conclusions: Skull infarction is a potentially severe complication of sickle cell disease presenting unique clinical challenges. Purpose: The purpose of the present study is to (a) provide quantitative data on the growth of levator veli palatini (LVP), velopharyngeal (VP), and craniofacial dimensions in children under 12 months while controlling for corrected age and sex and (b) compare variability within age and sex groups. Method: Magnetic resonance imaging scans of 75 infants between 0 and 12 months were measured and divided into four age groups. These data were obtained as part of a larger retrospective study. Following exclusion criteria, scans were analyzed, and dependent variables were obtained. Results: There was a statistically significant (p < .0001) difference between corrected age groups on LVP muscle, VP, and craniofacial variables while controlling for sex. Significant growth effects were observed for LVP length (p < .0001), extravelar length (p < .0001), intravelar length (p = .048), midline thickness (p = .0001), origin-origin distance (p < .0001), velar length (p < .0001), velar thickness (p = .003), nasion-sella turcica distance (p < .0001), sella turcica-basion distance (p < .0001), and hard palate length (p < .0001). Significant sex effects were observed for pharyngeal depth (p = .026) and effective VP ratio (p = .014). When age was treated as a continuous variable, similar results were observed for all variables except pharyngeal depth. Within-group comparisons revealed the most variability occurs between 3 and 5.99 months for LVP and craniofacial variables and between 9 and 11.99 months of age for VP variables. Male participants demonstrated greater variability than female participants. Conclusions: Differences were observed in LVP, VP, and craniofacial variables in children under 12 months while controlling for sex. Objectives Our aim was to introduce a standardized system for assessing the extent of GCA on MRI, i.e. the Magnetic Resonance Vasculitis Activity Score (MRVAS). To obtain a comprehensive view, we used an extensive MRI protocol including cranial vessels and the aorta with its branches. To test reliability, MRI was assessed by four readers with different levels of experience. Methods A total of 80 patients with suspected GCA underwent MRI of the cranial arteries and the aorta and its branches (20 vessel segments). Every vessel was rated dichotomous [inflamed (coded as 1) or not (coded as 0)], providing a summed score of 0–20. Blinded readers [two experienced radiologists (ExR) and two inexperienced radiologists (InR)] applied the MRVAS on an individual vessel and an overall level (defined as the highest score of any of the individual vessel scores). To determine interrater agreement, Cohen's κ was calculated for pairwise comparison of each reader for individual vessel segments. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were used for the MRVAS. Results Concordance rates were excellent for both subcohorts on an individual vessel-based (GCA: ICC 0.95; non-GCA: ICC 0.96) and overall MRVAS level (GCA: ICC 0.96; non-GCA: ICC 1.0). Interrater agreement yielded significant concordance (P  < 0.001) for all pairs (κ range 0.78–0.98). No significant differences between ExRs and InRs were observed (P  = 0.38). The Ethiopian highlands represent a wide spectrum of ecological gradients that provide suitable conditions for gradient speciation. Previous studies support the gradient model of speciation for two Ethiopian shrew species: Crocidura thalia and C. glassi. Here, we aimed to elucidate for the first time the phylogenetic position of C. afeworkbekelei and to test the gradient model of speciation for these three species. On the basis of a dataset collected from the whole south slope of the Bale Mountains, we reconstructed phylogenetic relationships among these species using mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Additionally, we examined shape and size differentiation of the skull and mandible. The molecular data revealed a similarity of the three species with lack of reciprocal monophyly among them. We demonstrated differences both in size and shape of the skull and mandible between low- and high-elevation forms albeit without a significant morphological hiatus. We identified the most changeable parts of the skull and mandible, which imply adaptive shifts in diet. We revealed the distribution, phylogenetic and morphological patterns that match predictions of the gradient model of speciation for three mammalian forms. Our data suggest intense processes of adaptation to the markedly different habitats along the considerable altitudinal gradient that fit the first stage of the gradient model of speciation. We believe that C. afeworkbekelei and C. thalia should be regarded as different ecotypes, and these species names must be reduced to junior synonyms of C. glassi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a detailed analysis of the endocast of one of the most complete Paranthropus robustus crania known, DNH 7, from the Drimolen site (South Africa), and compares it with the morphology of other australopithecine endocasts. We focus on endocranial volume, the impressions of cortical sulci, cranial sutures, and the pattern of cranial venous sinuses on the endocast. A noteworthy observation is the estimated endocranial capacity of 403 cm3, which is small for an adult Paranthropus. Fragmentary sulci identified in the frontal and temporal lobes of DNH 7 exhibit similarities with patterns observed in chimpanzees and gracile australopithecines. We observe the presence of a large remnant of an occipital‐marginal sinus on DNH 7 and provide an updated table of 13 Paranthropus endocasts that are scorable for this trait, which reinforces the hypothesis that an enlarged occipital‐marginal (O/M) sinus system was fixed across the three species of Paranthropus. In light of this, the possible functional significance of the occipital‐marginal sinus system is reevaluated considering the ontogenetic development of cranial venous blood flow in human children. This leads us to hypothesize that the ontogenetic development of cranial blood flow in Paranthropus and Australopithecus africanus infants were different and to suggest that Taung 1 was the only A. africanus specimen known to have exhibited an enlarged O/M sinus system because it was an immature individual. Perineural tumour spread in head and neck cancer can be a challenging diagnosis for radiologists; head and neck anatomy is intimidating and perineural tumour spread can be subtle and difficult to detect. It results in significant morbidity for patients, can upstage disease and will frequently result in more prolonged treatment courses. This pictorial review provides a thorough examination of the imaging characteristics of perineural tumour spread in head and neck malignancy. It highlights key imaging features, from initial diagnosis to its post-therapy appearance, emphasising the clinical relevance and role of imaging in post-therapy assessment. Multi-modality imaging examples are included with a focus on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron-emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT). MRI features of perineural tumour spread include intermediate T2 signal expansion of a nerve, abnormal enhancement extending along a nerve, expansion of a skull or neural foramen and loss of normal fat planes surrounding nerve pathways. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT is a useful adjunct to MRI, perineural tumour spread results in abnormal FDG accumulation in a linear fashion anatomically spreading along a nerve pathway. The question of what the ancient life cycle of tetrapods was like forms a key component in understanding the origin of land vertebrates. The existence of distinct larval forms, as exemplified by many lissamphibians, and their transformation into adults is an important aspect in this field. The temnospondyls, the largest clade of Palaeozoic–Mesozoic non‐amniote tetrapods, covered a wide ecomorphological range from fully aquatic to terrestrial taxa. In various species, rich ontogenetic data have accumulated over the past 130 years, permitting the study of early phases of temnospondyl development. In temnospondyls, eight ontogenetic phases have been identified in which the skeleton formed. In branchiosaurids and the eryopiform Sclerocephalus, large parts of the ossification sequence are now known. Most taxa in which small specimens are preserved had aquatic larvae with external gills that superficially resemble larval salamanders. In the edopoids, dvinosaurs, and eryopiforms, the larvae developed slowly, with incompletely ossified axial and appendicular skeletons, but possessed a fast‐developing dermal skull with strong teeth. Irrespective of adult terrestriality or a fully aquatic life, there was no drastic transformation during later ontogeny, but a slow and steady acquisition of adult features. In dissorophoids, the limbs developed at a much faster pace, whereas skull formation was slowed down, especially in the amphibamiforms, and culminating in the neotenic Branchiosauridae. In the zatracheid Acanthostomatops, slow but profound transformation led to a fully terrestrial adult. The basal dissorophoid Stegops retained rapid development of dermal skull bones and established a fully dentigerous, strongly ossified palate early. In Micromelerpeton, formation of the last skull bones was slightly delayed and metamorphosis remained a long and steady phase of morphological transformations. In amphibamiforms, metamorphosis became more drastic, with an increasing number of events packed into a short phase of ontogeny. This is exemplified by Apateon, Platyrhinops, and Amphibamus in which this condensation was maximised. The remains of a unique fossil bony fish were discovered in late Eocene (39.1–36.7 Ma: NZ Kaiatan stage) mudstone at Burnside near Dunedin, New Zealand in the 1930s and subsequently named and described by Frederick Chapman. He interpreted the type specimen as being a large-scaled relative of the modern Thyrsites of the Gempylidae (Scombroidei: Trichiuroidea), known to be swift, large oceanic predators. However, Chapman is unlikely to have seen all of the fossil, and did not discuss the skull and caudal skeleton. Additional material now allows these to be included in the expanded description herein, including key morphologic features of the fish such as the presence of premaxillary fangs. This study describes the rather complex history of the specimen and re-examines this significant fossil fish in the University of Otago collections, giving a more complete understanding of Eothyrsites morphology, paleoecology and relationships. In summary, we suspect Eothyrsites represents an ancestral form of gempylid, closely related to the gemfish group, an important Southern Hemisphere macrofossil record from the Eocene seas around Zealandia. Objective To research new methods and materials for cranioplasty in children with various types of skull defects. Methods and Results A total of 40 childrens with different locations, sizes and reasons of skull defects underwent surgery using 3 classes of homogeneous yet heterogeneous biomimetic hydroxyapatite collagen bone materials developed by Tsinghua University. These include porous mineralized collagen scaffolds (pMC), compact mineralized collagen scaffolds (cMC), and biphasic mineralized collagen composite scaffolds (bMC). Cranioplasty was successful in all cases, with no serious postoperative complications and good recovery outcomes. After 3 months to one year of follow-up, there was no displacement of the implants, the shape of the head was normal, the incisions healed well. Reexamination CT showed that the biomimetic hydroxyapatite collagen bone material implants were not shifted, and imaging fusion was partially achieved. The pMC CT HU-value was 300-400 HU, and the cMC CT HU - value was 700-900 HU, and the CT HU - value was close to normal bone tissue over time. Conclusions The use of different types of biomimetic hydroxyapatite collagen composites allows for personalized cranial reconstruction based on individual needs, and has been proven to possess good bio- compatibility and osteoinductive capacity. Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a malignant small round cell tumor, accounting for 10–15% of all primary bone tumors and approximately 3% of all pediatric cancers. Primary ES of the cranial bone is unusual with reported incidence from 1% to 6% of all ES cases. This report shows a rare case of primary ES of the squamous temporal bone in a 12-year-old boy with a history of swelling of the right temporal region and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure. We illustrate the extremely unusual radiological presentation of this primary ES of temporal bone associated with large aneurysmal bone cyst-like (ABC-like) changes. The boy was successfully treated according to Euro Ewing 2012 protocol. He is alive with no evidence of recurrence and metastasis after 16 months of completed treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the histomorphometric and immunohistochemical impacts of vitamin K2 on guided bone regeneration (GBR) in calvarial critical‐size defects (CSDs) in diabetic rats. Methods: A total of 30 rats were used in this study, comprising 12 non‐diabetic (control) rats and 18 with streptozotocin‐nicotinamide‐induced experimental Diabetes mellitus (DM). In all rats, two calvarial CSDs were created: one defect was left empty (E), the other was treated with bovine‐derived bone graft and collagen‐based resorbable membrane (GM). Study groups were as follows: control rats administered saline (n = 6, C‐E and C‐GM groups) or vitamin K2 (n = 6, CK‐E and CK‐GM groups) and diabetic rats administered saline (n = 6, DM‐E and DM‐GM groups) or vitamin K2 (n = 6, DMK‐E and DMK‐GM groups). After 4 weeks of saline or vitamin K2 administration, the rats were euthanized. Bone defect healing and new bone formation were assessed histomorphometrically, and osteocalcin and osteopontin levels were examined immunohistochemically. Results: Percentage of new bone formation was greater in CK‐GM vs. CK‐E and in DMK‐GM vs. DMK‐E [d = 3.86 (95% CI = 16.38–28.61), d = 1.86, (95% CI = 10.74–38.58), respectively, p <.05]. Bone defect healing scores were higher in CK‐GM vs. CK‐E and in DMK‐GM vs. DMK‐E [d = 2.69 (95% CI = ‐2.12 to −0.87), d = 3.28 (95% CI = 0.98–1.91), respectively, p <.05]. In almost all cases reported in the literature to date, computed tomography has been used to diagnose a PCP fracture.The aim of this study was to develop a radiographic technique for imaging the PCP, to determine the optimum radiographic projection angle and trial its use in standing sedated horses.Cadaveric‐simulated clinical case and pilot study conducted in 10 standing sedated horses.Three tangential radiographs of the left and right paracondylar processes at 5°, 15° and 20° to the transverse plane and 20° to the dorsal plane were obtained in 10 standing sedated horses. Three blinded observers independently ranked each of the three images for clarity of viewing the PCP. The radiographic projection allowed imaging of the ventral portion of the PCP while avoiding superimposition of other osseous structures. Tumorous bone defects present significant challenges for surgical bio‐reconstruction due to the dual pathological conditions of residual tumor presence and extensive bone loss following excision surgery. To address this challenge, a "thermal switch" smart bone scaffold based on the silicene nanosheet‐modified decalcified bone matrix (SNS@DBM) is developed by leveraging the natural affinity between collagen and silicene, which is elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations. Benefitting from its exceptional photothermal ability, biodegradability, and bioactivity, the SNS@DBM "thermal switch" provides an integrated postoperative sequential thermotherapy for tumorous bone loss by exerting three levels of photothermal stimulation (i.e., strong, moderate, and nonstimulation). During the different phases of postoperative bioconstruction, the SNS@DBM scaffold realizes simultaneous residual tumor ablation, tumor recurrence prevention, and bone tissue regeneration. These biological effects are verified in the tumor‐bearing nude mice of patient‐derived tissue xenografts and critical cranium defect rats. Mechanism research prompts moderate heat stimulus generated by and coordinating with SNSs can upregulate osteogenic genes, promote macrophages M2 polarization, and intensify angiogenesis of H‐type vessels. The Calva (scalp) is the set of tissues that cover the upper, posterior and lateral regions of the bony head. This term, belonging to the first Latin declension characteristic of feminine nouns, is valid as an official term in Terminologia Anatomica through the numerical code 7113. However, the main translations of the same into Spanish and English are skull and bald. For this reason, the objective of the present study was to analyze the etymology of the Latin term Calva in order to evaluate and discuss the coherence between its lexical and morphological relationship, thus contributing to the understanding and correct naming of the terms belonging to Terminologia Anatomica. To address this issue, searches were conducted using Latin-Spanish and Latin-English dictionaries, where an etymological analysis determined that the relationship of the term in question with the skull and the epithet bald is due to the fact that Calvus, a Latin adjective used to refer to "bald", was formed from the words Calva, Calvaria and Recalvus, the meaning of the first being "bald head", the second "skull" and the third "having receding hairline". Therefore, it is concluded that currently the Latin term Calva is not adequate given the etymological meanings found, in addition to the possible confusion of this with other terms belonging to Terminologia Anatomica, the incorporation of a new term is suggested that obeys the guidelines of FIPAT-IFFA and the various grammatical aspects of Latin. In February 2020, a group of Kanaka 'Ōiwi cultural practitioners arrived in Cambridge, England, to repatriate ancestral remains stolen from Hawai'i in the late nineteenth century. This essay explores the possession, return, and interpretation of these remains, specifically fourteen iwi po'o (human skulls) originating from the Pali, an important historic battle site in the Ko'olau mountain range of O'ahu. In telling the story of their possession and dispossession, I draw upon theories of haunting from Indigenous studies and Black studies in order to challenge the way that settler colonial structures work to limit and potentially foreclose Hawaiian relationships to spiritual presence and placemaking. Through the Native Hawaiian concept of ho'opahulu, which, in 'ōlelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian language), encompasses both spectrality and the exhaustion of land from overfarming, this essay highlights connections between land, spirit, and haunting that provide a more comprehensive framework for understanding spectral placemaking beyond colonial geographies. In doing so, I argue against possessive logics, showing how contemporary Hawaiian cultural geographies fundamentally refuse, upend, and replant relations that exceed the American state. Objective: To evaluate the demographic, clinical, radiological features, and surgical outcomes of 31 patients who underwent surgery for cranial cavernous malformations (CCM). Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 31 patients who underwent CCM between July 2020 and January 2024. Data included demographic and clinical, radiological, intraoperative, and histopathological findings, and postoperative complications. Detailed neurological examinations were performed before and after surgery. All patients underwent preoperative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the lesions were evaluated using the Zabramski classification. Surgeries aimed at total resection using neuronavigation, intraoperative MRI, and ultrasonography when needed. The average follow-up duration was 25.3 months. Results: Thirty-three transcranial microsurgical excisions were performed in 31 patients (48% male, 52% female; mean age 30.8 years). Lesions were most commonly parietal (39%) and frontal (26%). Clinical findings included epilepsy (62%), headache (20%), and focal neurological deficits (6%). According to Zabramski, 42% were type I, 52% were type II, and 6% were type III. Total excision was achieved in 94% of the patients, with 6% requiring a second operation. Postoperative seizures were absent in 74% of patients with epilepsy. The average length of hospital stay was 5.7 days, with no permanent neurological deterioration or mortality. Conclusion: Surgical resection is effective for treating symptomatic CCM. Total resection cases should be closely monitored due to the risk of recurrence. A conservative approach is recommended for asymptomatic, deep-seated, or eloquent lesions, and radiosurgery is considered for high surgical risk cases. The skull is a complex, vital structure made up of many bones. It has been observed that studies on skulls help to determine species and sex. In recent years, craniometric studies have been frequently used to determine morphometric features in animals. In our study, 150 skulls were studied, 50 from the second trimester (25 males and 25 females), 50 from the third trimester (25 males and 25 females), and 50 from the third and fourth week after birth (25 males and 25 females). The skulls were sectioned by computerised tomography and stored in DICOM format. From the images, nine different measurements and five index calculations were made. The similarities and differences between species were determined by ignoring sex differences. Correlation analyses were performed to compare measurement parameters between animal species. In addition, the results of statistical analyses between sexes were evaluated without species distinction. SL, CW and ICI parameters were highly statistically significant between measurements in the second trimester, third trimester and postnatal group (p < 0.01). In the third trimester, the EHC measurement parameter was found to be highly significant between males and female (p < 0.01). In Table 5, the CL parameter was positively correlated with CW, IHC, EHC, ILC, ELC, FMW and FMH. There are very few studies on foetal development. It is predicted that the data obtained can be used in zoo‐archaeology, anatomy, surgery and forensic medicine. Background/Objectives: Surgical navigation has advanced maxillofacial surgery since the 1990s, bringing benefits for various indications. Traditional registration methods use fiducial markers that are either invasively bone-anchored or attached to a dental vacuum splint and offer high accuracy but necessitate additional imaging with increased radiation exposure. We propose a novel, non-invasive registration protocol using a CAD/CAM dental splint based on high-resolution intraoral scans. Methods: The effectiveness of this method was experimentally evaluated with an ex vivo 3D-printed skull measuring the target registration error (TRE). Surgical application is demonstrated in two clinical cases. Results: In the ex vivo model, the new CAD/CAM-splint-based method achieved a mean TRE across the whole facial skull of 0.97 ± 0.29 mm, which was comparable to traditional techniques like using bone-anchored screws (1.02 ± 0.23 mm) and dental vacuum splints (1.01 ± 0.33 mm), while dental anatomical landmarks showed a lower accuracy with a mean TRE of 1.84 ± 0.44 mm. Multifactorial ANOVA confirmed significant differences in TRE based on the registration method and the navigated level of the facial skull (p < 0.001). In clinical applications, the presented method demonstrated high accuracy for both midfacial and mandibular surgeries. Conclusions: Our results suggest that this non-invasive CAD/CAM-splint-based method is a viable alternative to traditional fiducial marker techniques, with the potential for broad application in maxillofacial surgery. This approach retains high accuracy while eliminating the need for supplementary imaging and reduces patient radiation exposure. Simple Summary: To date, there are very few studies of the bony nasal cavity of the domestic cat and even fewer of big felids. A detailed and exhaustive anatomical study of this cavity in the domestic cat is presented in this paper through dissections, trepanations and anatomical sections. This work has allowed to delve deeper into the anatomy of the bony nasal cavity. This study deepens the knowledge of this region through diagnostic imaging techniques, such as computed tomography, three-dimensional reconstruction in maximum-intensity projection and volume rendering, that allow for the spatial visualization of this cavity. These reconstructed images represent an improvement in the anatomical study of the cavity and will help veterinary clinicians in the diagnosis of nasal pathologies. Obtaining molds by three-dimensional printing allows for acquiring models very close to reality that capture these structures in detail. These techniques, which in human medicine have already led to many clinical and therapeutic improvements, are a very useful tool in veterinary medicine that will lead to advances and improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of nasal pathologies, improving the survival of many threatened species. This study aims to develop three-dimensional printing models of the bony nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses of big and domestic cats using reconstructed computed tomographic images. This work included an exhaustive study of the osseous nasal anatomy of the domestic cat carried out through dissections, bone trepanations and sectional anatomy. With the use of OsiriX viewer, the DICOM images were postprocessed to obtaining maximum-intensity projection and volume-rendering reconstructions, which allowed for the visualization of the nasal cavity structures and the paranasal sinuses, providing an improvement in the future anatomical studies and diagnosis of pathologies. DICOM images were also processed with AMIRA software to obtain three-dimensional images using semiautomatic segmentation application. These images were then exported using 3D Slicer software for three-dimensional printing. Molds were printed with the Stratasys 3D printer. In human medicine, three-dimensional printing is already of great importance in the clinical field; however, it has not yet been implemented in veterinary medicine and is a technique that will, in the future, in addition to facilitating the anatomical study and diagnosis of diseases, allow for the development of implants that will improve the treatment of pathologies and the survival of big felids. The adaptive potential of plastic phenotypes relies on combined developmental responses. We investigated how manipulation of developmental conditions related to foraging mode in the fish Megaleporinus macrocephalus induces plastic responses at different levels: (a) functional modularity of skull bones, (b) biomechanical properties of the chondrocranium using finite element models, (c) bmp4 expression levels, used as a proxy for molecular pathways involved in bone responses to mechanical load. We identified new modules in experimental groups, suggesting increased integration in specific head bone elements associated with the development of subterminal and upturned mouths, which are major features of Megaleporinus plastic morphotypes released in the lab. Plastic responses in head shape involved differences in the magnitude of mechanical stress, which seem restricted to certain chondrocranium regions. Three bones represent a "mechanical unit" related to changes in mouth position induced by foraging mode, suggesting that functional modularity might be enhanced by the way specific regions respond to mechanical load. Differences in bmp4 expression levels between plastic morphotypes indicate associations between molecular signaling pathways and biomechanical responses to load. Our results offer a multilevel perspective of epigenetic factors involved in plastic responses, expanding our knowledge about mechanisms of developmental plasticity that originate novel complex phenotypes. Flat head syndrome (FHS) sometimes occurs when a baby maintains the same head position during the first several months of life, causing a skull deformity. FHS usually improves with time and natural growth, although some show aggravation against conservative treatment. We reviewed pathologically proved early closure of skull suture that may be seen secondary to FHS. The clinical and radiologic findings of the patients who showed progressive skull deformity resembling FHS were retrospectively reviewed. All the patients underwent surgical treatment and pathologic specimens were obtained. The detected patients included two 5-month-old infants and one 1-year-old child. The former were conservatively treated without any obvious premature suture closure on computed tomography (CT), and later developed progressive tower-like skull deformities. The infants were diagnosed with possible premature fusion of lambda site and underwent removal around lambda depression (LD). The latter showed evident sagittal suture closure on CT with digital markings, and was diagnosed with increased intracranial pressure and underwent cranioplasty of posterior expansion. Histopathologic specimens obtained from the patients' resected sutures showed irregularly narrowed suture structure with ossification and fibrous tissue proliferation within them, supporting the diagnosis of premature closure of the sagittal sutures. Their postoperative courses were uneventful, and their skull deformities subsequently improved. Conservative therapy-resistant progressive occipital skull deformity with LD may be a sign of early suture closure, even if CT does not show obvious suture closure. The findings are helpful for early diagnosis and might lead to minimal invasive surgery if needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
