Ab initio techniques have been used to investigate structural changes in semiconducting Mg 2 Si and Ca 2 Si thin films (from 17 nm down to 0.2 nm corresponding to the 2D structure) along with band-gap variations due to quantum confinement. Cubic Mg 2 Si(111) thin films being dynamically stable at thicknesses ( d ) larger than 0.3 nm displayed an indirect band gap, the reduction of which with increasing d could be reasonably well described by the simple effective mass approximation. Only 2D Mg 2 Si has a unique structure because of the orthorhombic distortion and the direct band gap. Since the surface energy of cubic Ca 2 Si(111) films was lower with respect to any surface of the orthorhombic phase, which is the ground state for the Ca 2 Si bulk, the metastable in-bulk cubic phase in the form of thin films turned out to be preferable in total energy than any orthorhombic Ca 2 Si thin film for d < 3 nm. Sizable structural distortion and the appearance of surface states in the gap region of Ca 2 Si thin films with d < 3 nm could be the reason for an odd dependence of the band-gap variation on d .

Highly effective yet affordable non-noble metal catalysts are a key component for advances in hydrogen generation via electrolysis. The synthesis of catalytic heterostructures containing established Ni in combination with surface NiO, Ni(OH) 2 , and NiOOH domains gives rise to a synergistic effect between the surface components and is highly beneficial for water splitting and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, the intrinsic catalytic activity of pure Ni and the effect of partial electrochemical oxidation of ultra-smooth magnetron sputter-deposited Ni surfaces are analyzed by combining electrochemical measurements with transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The experimental investigations are supplemented by Density Functional Theory and Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Kinetic parameters for the HER are evaluated while surface roughening is carefully monitored during different Ni film treatment and operation stages. Surface oxidation results in the dominant formation of Ni(OH) 2 , practically negligible surface roughening, and 3-5 times increased HER exchange current densities. Higher levels of surface roughening are observed during prolonged cycling to deep negative potentials, while surface oxidation slows down the HER activity losses compared to as-deposited films. Thus, surface oxidation increases the intrinsic HER activity of nickel and is also a viable strategy to improve catalyst durability.

Efficient cathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic water electrolysis rely on the use of expensive platinum group metals (PGMs). However, to achieve economically viable operation, both the content of PGMs must be reduced and their intrinsically strong H adsorption mitigated. Herein, we show that the surface effects of hydrogenated TiO 2 nanotube (TNT) arrays can make osmium, a so far less-explored PGM, a highly active HER electrocatalyst. These defect-rich TiO 2 nanostructures provide an interactive scaffold for the galvanic deposition of Os particles with modulated adsorption properties. Through systematic investigations, we identify the synthesis conditions (OsCl 3 concentration/temperature/reaction time) that yield a progressive improvement in Os deposition rate and mass loading, thereby decreasing the HER overpotential. At the same time, the Os particles deposited by this procedure remain mainly sub-nanometric and entirely cover the inner tube walls. An optimally balanced Os@TNT composite prepared at 3 mM/55 °C/30 min exhibits a record low overpotential (η) of 61 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm -2 , a high mass activity of 20.8 A mg Os -1 at 80 mV, and a stable performance in an acidic medium. Density functional theory calculations indicate the existence of strong interactions between the hydrogenated TiO 2 surface and small Os clusters, which may weaken the Os-H* binding strength and thus boost the intrinsic HER activity of Os centers. The results presented in this study offer new directions for the fabrication of cost-effective PGM-based catalysts and a better understanding of the synergistic electronic interactions at the PGM|TiO 2 interface.

The development of new electrochromic materials and devices, like smart windows, has an enormous impact on the energy efficiency of modern society. One of the crucial materials in this technology is nickel oxide. Ni-deficient NiO shows anodic electrochromism, whose mechanism is still under debate. We use DFT+ U calculations to show that Ni vacancy generation results in the formation of hole polarons localized at the two oxygens next to the vacancy. In the case of NiO bulk, upon Li insertion or injection of an extra electron into Ni-deficient NiO, one hole gets filled, and the hole bipolaron is converted into a hole polaron well-localized at one O atom, resulting from the transition between oxidized (colored) to reduced (bleached) state. In the case of the Ni-deficient NiO(001) surface, the qualitatively same picture is obtained upon embedding Li, Na, and K into the Ni surface vacancy, reinforcing the conclusion that the electron injection, resulting in the filling of the hole states, is responsible for the modulation of the optical properties of NiO. Hence, our results suggest a new mechanism of Ni-deficient NiO electrochromism not related to the change of the Ni oxidation states, i.e. , the Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ transition, but based on the formation and annihilation of hole polarons in oxygen p-states.

With recent advances in the field of single-atoms (SAs) used in photocatalysis, an unprecedented performance of atomically dispersed co-catalysts has been achieved. However, the stability and agglomeration of SA co-catalysts on the semiconductor surface may represent a critical issue in potential applications. Here, the photoinduced destabilization of Pt SAs on the benchmark photocatalyst, TiO 2 , is described. In aqueous solutions within illumination timescales ranging from few minutes to several hours, light-induced agglomeration of Pt SAs to ensembles (dimers, multimers) and finally nanoparticles takes place. The kinetics critically depends on the presence of sacrificial hole scavengers and the used light intensity. Density-functional theory calculations attribute the light induced destabilization of the SA Pt species to binding of surface-coordinated Pt with solution-hydrogen (adsorbed H atoms), which consequently weakens the Pt SA bonding to the TiO 2 surface. Despite the gradual aggregation of Pt SAs into surface clusters and their overall reduction to metallic state, which involves >90% of Pt SAs, the overall photocatalytic H 2 evolution remains virtually unaffected., (© 2022 The Authors. Understanding the catalytic performance of different materials is of crucial importance for achieving further technological advancements. This especially relates to the behaviors of different classes of catalysts under operating conditions. Here, we analyzed the effects of local coordination of metal centers (Mn, Fe, Co) in graphene-embedded single-atom catalysts (SACs). We started with well-known M@N 4 -graphene catalysts and systematically replaced nitrogen atoms with oxygen or sulfur atoms to obtain M@O x N y -graphene and M@S x N y -graphene SACs (x + y = 4). We show that local coordination strongly affects the electronic structure and reactivity towards hydrogen and oxygen species. However, stability is even more affected. Using the concept of Pourbaix plots, we show that the replacement of nitrogen atoms in metal coordinating centers with O or S destabilized the SACs towards dissolution, while the metal centers were easily covered by O and OH, acting as additional ligands at high anodic potentials and high pH values. Thus, not only should local coordination be considered in terms of the activity of SACs, but it is also necessary to consider its effects on the speciation of SAC active centers under different potentials and pH conditions.

W 18 O 49 has been studied by means of ab initio techniques in the framework of the density functional theory using the onsite Hubbard- U correction applied to the W-d states as well as using the hybrid potential. The existence of bipolarons is found to be an intrinsic feature of this oxide resulting in the presence of different oxidation states of W atoms (W 6+ and W 5+ ) and in the co-existence of localized and delocalized electrons. We also discuss possible switching from the W 6+ to W 5+ and from the W 5+ to W 4+ oxidation states in the presence of an O vacancy. It appears that O vacancy formation does not cause any additional charge localization at W sites but solely contributes to delocalized electrons. The calculated absorption and reflection coefficients manifest a transparency window in the visible region. At the same time, sizable absorption, occurring due to the presence of free carriers, is detected in the far and mid infrared regions. Additionally, in the near infrared region we confirm and explain an experimentally observed shielding effect originating from transitions involving the localized bipolaronic states.

Here, we evaluate three different noble metal co-catalysts (Pd, Pt, and Au) that are present as single atoms (SAs) on the classic benchmark photocatalyst, TiO 2 . To trap the single atoms on the surface, we introduced controlled surface vacancies (Ti 3+ -O v ) on anatase TiO 2 nanosheets by a thermal reduction treatment. After anchoring identical loadings of single atoms of Pd, Pt, and Au, we measure the photocatalytic H 2 generation rate and compare it to the classic nanoparticle co-catalysts on the nanosheets. While nanoparticles yield the well-established the hydrogen evolution reaction activity sequence (Pt > Pd > Au), for the single atom form, Pd radically outperforms Pt and Au. Using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the oxygen 1s core level, the ratio between intact (D&#95;{2}O) and dissociated (OD) water in the hydrated stoichiometric TiO&#95;{2}(110) surface is determined at varying coverage and temperature. In the submonolayer regime, both the D&#95;{2}O∶OD ratio and the core-level binding energy of D&#95;{2}O (ΔBE) decrease with temperature. The observed variations in ΔBE are shown with density functional theory to be governed crucially and solely by the local hydrogen bonding environment, revealing a generally applicable classification and details about adsorption motifs.

In pursuit of the ideal photocatalyst, cheap and stable semiconductor TiO 2 is considered to be a good choice if one is able to reduce its band gap and decrease the recombination rate of charge carriers. The approach that offers such improvements for energy conversion applications is the modification of TiO 2 with nitrogen and noble metals. However, the origin of these improvements and possibilities for further design of single-atom catalysts are not always straightforward. To shed light on the atomic-scale picture, we modeled the nitrogen-doped (001) anatase TiO 2 surface as a support for palladium and platinum single-atom deposition. The thermodynamics of various synthesis routes for Pd/Pt deposition and nitrogen doping is considered based on density functional theory (DFT)-calculated energies, highlighting the effect of nitrogen doping on metal dimer formation and metal-support interaction. XPS analysis of the valence band of the modified TiO 2 nanocrystals, and the calculated charge transfer and electronic structure of single-atom catalysts supported on the (001) anatase TiO 2 surface provide an insight into modifications occurring in the valence zone of TiO 2 due to nitrogen doping and Pd/Pt deposition at the surface. DFT results also show that substitutional nitrogen doping significantly increases metal-support interaction, while interstitial nitrogen doping promotes only Pt-support interaction.

We demonstrate electrodeposition as a synthesis method for fabrication of Al coatings, up to 10 μm thick, containing a high density of genuine growth twins. This has not been expected since the twin boundary energy of pure Al is very high. TEM methods were used to analyze deposited Al and its nanoscaled twins. DFT methods confirmed that the influence of the substrate is limited to the layers close to the interface. Our findings are different from those achieved by sputtering of Al coatings restricted to a thickness less than 100 nm with twins dominated by epitaxial effects. We propose that in the case of electrodeposition, a high density of twins arises because of fast nucleation and is additionally promoted by a monolayer of adsorbed hydrogen originating from water impurities. Multipolaron solutions were studied in the framework of the Holstein one-dimensional molecular crystal model. The study was performed in the continuous limit where the crystal model maps into the nonlinear Schrödinger equation for which a new periodic dnoidal solution was found for the multipolaron system. In addition, the stability of the multi-polaron solutions was examined, and it was found that cnoidal and dnoidal solutions stabilize in different ranges of the parameter space. Moreover, the model was studied under the influence of nonlocal effects and the polaronic dynamics was described in terms of internal solitonic modes.

New electrode materials for alkaline-ion batteries are a timely topic. Among many promising candidates, V2O5 is one of the most interesting cathode materials. While having very high theoretical capacity, in practice, its performance is hindered by its low stability and poor conductivity. As regards the theoretical descriptions of V2O5, common DFT-GGA calculations fail to reproduce both the electronic and crystal structures. While the band gap is underestimated, the interlayer spacing is overestimated as weak dispersion interactions are not properly described within GGA. Here we show that the combination of the DFT+U method and semi-empirical D2 correction can compensate for the drawbacks of the GGA when it comes to the modelling of V2O5. When compared to common PBE calculations, with a modest increase in the computational cost, PBE+U+D2 fully reproduced the experimental band gap of V2O5, while the errors in the lattice parameters are only a few percent. Using the proposed PBE+U+D2 methodology we studied the doping of V2O5 with 3d elements (from Sc to Zn). We show that both the structural and electronic parameters are affected by doping. Most importantly, a significant increase in conductivity is expected upon doping, which is of great importance for the application of V2O5 in metal-ion batteries.

We present the phase diagram of Ce1-xGdxO2-x/2 (CGO), calculated by means of a combined Density Functional Theory (DFT), cluster expansion and lattice Monte Carlo approach. We show that this methodology gives reliable results for the whole range of concentrations (x ≡ xGd ≤ 1). In the thermodynamic equilibrium, we observe two transitions: the onset of oxygen-vacancy (O-Va) ordering at ca. 1200-3300 K for concentrations xGd = 0.3-1, and a phase separation into CeO2 and C-type Gd2O3 occurring below ca. 1000 K for all concentrations. We also model 'quenched' systems, with cations immobile below 1500 K, and observe that the presence of random-like cation configurations does not prevent C-type vacancy ordering. The obtained transition temperatures for Va ordering agree rather well with existing experimental data. We analyse the effect of vacancy ordering and composition on the lattice parameters and relaxation pattern of cations.

Development of novel materials may often require a rational use of high price components, like noble metals, in combination with the possibility to tune their properties in a desirable way. Here we present a theoretical DFT study of Au and Pd single atoms supported by doped MgO(001). By introducing B, C and N impurities into the MgO(001) surface, the interaction between the surface and the supported metal adatoms can be adjusted. Impurity atoms act as strong binding sites for Au and Pd adatoms and can help to produce highly dispersed metal particles. The reactivity of metal atoms supported by doped MgO(001), as probed by CO, is altered compared to their counterparts on pristine MgO(001). We find that Pd atoms on doped MgO(001) are less reactive than on perfect MgO(001). In contrast, Au adatoms bind CO much more strongly when placed on doped MgO(001). In the case of Au on N-doped MgO(001) we find that charge redistribution between the metal atom and impurity takes place even when not in direct contact, which enhances the interaction of Au with CO. The presented results suggest possible ways for optimizing the reactivity of oxide supported metal catalysts through impurity engineering.

Quantum devices depend on addressable elements, which can be modified separately and in their mutual interaction. Self-assembly at surfaces, for example, formation of a porous (metal-) organic network, provides an ideal way to manufacture arrays of identical quantum boxes, arising in this case from the confinement of the electronic (Shockley) surface state within the pores. We show that the electronic quantum box state as well as the interbox coupling can be modified locally to a varying extent by a selective choice of adsorbates, here C 60 , interacting with the barrier. In view of the wealth of differently acting adsorbates, this approach allows for engineering quantum states in on-surface network architectures.

The increasing demand and high prices of advanced catalysts motivate a constant search for novel active materials with reduced contents of noble metals. The development of thin films and core-shell catalysts seems to be a promising strategy along this path. Using density functional theory we have analyzed a number of surface properties of supported bimetallic thin films with the composition A 3 B (where A = Pt and Pd, and B = Cu, Ag and Au). We focus on the surface segregation, dissolution stability and surface electronic structure. We also address the chemisorption properties of Pd 3 Au thin films supported by different substrates, by probing the surface reactivity with CO. We find a strong influence of the support in the case of mono- and bilayers, while the surface strain seems to be the predominant factor in determining the surface properties of supported trilayers and thicker films. In particular, we show that the studied properties of the supported trilayers can be predicted from the lattice mismatch between the overlayer and the support. Namely, if the strain dependence of the corresponding quantities for pure strained surfaces is known, the properties of strained supported trilayers can be reliably estimated. The obtained results can be used in the design of novel catalysts and predictions of the surface properties of supported ultrathin catalyst layers.

Vacancies in graphene present sites of altered chemical reactivity and open possibilities to tune graphene properties by defect engineering. The understanding of chemical reactivity of such defects is essential for successful implementation of carbon materials in advanced technologies. We report the results of a systematic DFT study of atomic adsorption on graphene with a single vacancy for the elements of rows 1-6 of the periodic table of elements (PTE), excluding lanthanides. The calculations have been performed using the PBE, long-range dispersion interaction-corrected PBE (PBE+D2 and PBE+D3) and non-local vdW-DF2 functionals. We find that most elements strongly bind to the vacancy, except for the elements of groups 11 and 12, and noble gases, for which the contribution of dispersion interaction to bonding is most significant. The strength of the interaction with the vacancy correlates with the cohesive energy of the elements in their stable phases: the higher the cohesive energy is, the stronger bonding to the vacancy can be expected. As most atoms can be trapped at the SV site we have calculated the potentials of dissolution and found that in most cases the metals adsorbed at the vacancy are more "noble" than they are in their corresponding stable phases.

Ordering of dopants and oxygen vacancies is studied for Gd-doped ceria (x Gd ≤ 0.25) by means of a combined density functional theory (DFT) and cluster expansion approach, where the cluster interactions derived from DFT calculations are further used in Monte Carlo simulations. The methodology is meticulously tested and the stability of the obtained solutions with respect to the volume change, applied exchange-correlation approximation and other modelling parameters is carefully analysed. We study Gd and vacancy ordering in the case of thermodynamic equilibrium and vacancy ordering for quenched Gd configurations. We find that at the thermodynamic equilibrium there exists a transition temperature (T C ) below which phase separation into C-type Gd 2 O 3 and pure CeO 2 occurs. The phase separation is observed in the whole studied concentration range and the transition temperature increases with concentration from ca. 600 (x Gd = 0.03) to 1000 K (x Gd = 0.25). Above T C the distribution of Gd is random, oxygen vacancies tend to cluster in the coordination shells along 〈1, 1/2, 0〉 and 〈1, 1, 1〉, and the nearest neighbour position is preferred for Gd-vacancy. In the quenched Gd case, where Gd atoms are immobilised below 1500 K, the vacancy ordering is significantly frustrated. In fact, we observe an oxygen freezing transition below temperature T F ≈ T C - 350 K, which is close to temperatures at which a change in the conductivity slope is observed experimentally.

We examine the effects of the dopant type and the dopant distribution on the ion diffusion in ceria doped with rare-earth elements (Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd). Diffusion is simulated by means of a Kinetic Monte Carlo method using input transition rates derived from diffusion barriers calculated in the framework of density functional theory (DFT). Based on diffusion simulations, we discuss the characteristics of the dopants in terms of the diffusion barriers, and study oxygen ion trajectories for different dopants and distributions. Our simulations show a trend of increasing ion diffusivity with increasing atomic number for all distributions.

H 2 production via water electrolysis plays an important role in hydrogen economy. Hence, novel cheap electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are constantly needed. Here, we describe a simple method for the preparation of composite catalysts for H 2 evolution, consisting in simultaneous reduction of the graphene oxide film, and electrochemical deposition of Ni on its surface. The obtained composites (Ni@rGO), compared to pure electrodeposited Ni, show an improved electrocatalytic activity towards HER in alkaline media. We found that the activity of the Ni@rGO catalysts depends on the surface composition (Ni vs. C mole ratio) and on the level of structural disorder of the rGO support. We suggest that HER activity is improved via H ads spillover from the Ni particles to the rGO support, where quick recombination to molecular hydrogen is favored. A deeper insight into such a mechanism of H 2 production was achieved by kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations. These simulations enabled the reproduction of experimentally observed trends under the assumption that the support can act as a H ads acceptor. We expect that the proposed procedure for the production of novel HER catalysts could be generalized and lead to the development of a new generation of HER catalysts by tailoring the catalyst/support interface.

Understanding the ways graphene can be functionalized is of great importance for many contemporary technologies. Using density functional theory calculations we investigate how vacancy formation and substitutional doping by B, N, P and S affect the oxidizability and reactivity of the graphene basal plane. We find that the presence of these defects enhances the reactivity of graphene. In particular, these sites act as strong attractors for OH groups, suggesting that the oxidation of graphene could start at these sites or that these sites are the most difficult to reduce. Scaling between the OH and H adsorption energies is found on both reduced and oxidized doped graphene surfaces. Using the O 2 molecule as a probe we show that a proper modelling of doped graphene materials has to take into account the presence of oxygen functional groups.

In this contribution we inspect the adsorption of H, OH, Cl and Pt on oxidized graphene using DFT calculations. The introduction of epoxy and hydroxyl groups on the graphene basal plane significantly alters its chemisorption properties, which can be attributed to the deformation of the basal plane and the type and distribution of these groups. We show that a general scaling relation exists between the hydrogen binding energies and the binding energies of other investigated adsorbates, which allows for a simple probing of the reactivity of oxidized graphene with only one adsorbate. The electronic states of carbon atoms located within the 2 eV interval below the Fermi level are found to be responsible for the interaction of the basal plane with the chosen adsorbates. The number of electronic states situated in this energy interval is shown to correlate with hydrogen binding energies.

Doping of simple oxide materials can give rise to new exciting physical and chemical properties and open new perspectives for a variety of possible applications. Here we use density functional theory calculations to investigate the B-, C- and N-doped MgO(001) surfaces. We have found that the investigated dopants induce magnetization of the system amounting to 3, 2 and 1 μB for B, C and N, respectively. The dopants are found to be in the X(2-) state and tend to segregate to the surface. These impurity sites also present the centers of altered chemical reactivity. We probe the chemisorption properties of the doped MgO(001) surfaces with the CO molecule and atomic O. The adsorption of CO is much stronger on B- and C-doped MgO(001) compared to pure MgO(001) as the impurity sites serve as potent electron donors. The situation is similar to the case of atomic oxygen, for which we find the adsorption energy of -8.78 eV on B-doped MgO(001). The surface reactivity changes locally around the dopant atom, which is mainly restricted to its first coordination shell. The presented results suggest doped MgO as a versatile multifunctional material with possible use as an adsorbent or a catalyst.

A large number of computational studies have been devoted to the investigation of monometallic clusters supported by MgO. However, in practice, catalysis shows that multicomponent catalytic systems often win in catalytic performance over single component systems. In this study, the geometrical and electronic structure, stability and chemisorption properties of M1M2 metal dimers (M1, M2 = Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt) supported by defect free MgO(001) have been investigated in the framework of density functional theory. The oxygen sites of MgO(001) are the preferred adsorption sites for all the studied clusters, the majority of them adsorbing parallel to the surface with metal atoms attached to two surface oxygen atoms. The energetics of M1M2 + MgO(001) formation shows that the adsorption complexes are stable and benefit from metal-oxygen and metal-metal interaction. The chemisorption properties of Pd and Pt atoms in PdM2 and PtM2 dimers are studied using CO as a probe molecule. A linear relationship between the CO chemisorption and the d-band center position of the reacting atom in the dimer is observed, extending the d-band center model to the case of highly under-coordinated metal atoms supported by a non-conductive material.

The structures of the (CdS)42, (CdSe)42, Cd42Se32S10, Cd42Se22S20, and Cd42Se10S32 clusters have been determined using the simulated annealing method. Factors influencing the band gap value have been analysed. We show that the gap is most significantly reduced when strongly under coordinated atoms are present on the surface of the nanoclusters. In addition, the band gap depends on the S concentration as well as on the distribution of the S and Se atoms in the clusters. We present the optical absorption spectra calculated with BSE and RPA methods based on the GW corrected quasiparticle energies. Strong electron-hole coupling is observed for all the clusters, shifting the calculated RPA onset of optical absorption to lower energies. The absorption edge is shifted to higher photon energies as S concentration increases. The calculated energy separation of the first bright exciton and first dark exciton increases with S concentration.

In the first part [D. B. Migas et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2014, DOI: 10.1039/C3CP54988G] by means of ab initio calculations we have analyzed and discussed anisotropy effects on electronic properties of 〈001〉-, 〈100〉- and 〈110〉-oriented anatase TiO2 nanowires. In this part we present results indicating crucial changes in morphology of anatase TiO2 nanotubes originating from TiO2 nanowires by making a hole along the wire axis. The critical wall thickness has been found to exist for the nanotubes with 〈001〉 and 〈110〉 axes: at smaller thickness their shape can be rounded, squeezed, viewed as conglomerates of nanocrystals and even represented as cylindrical and 'single-walled'-like structures formed without rolling up a thin titania layer into a nanotube. In general, band dispersion near the gap region of TiO2 nanotubes is close to the one of TiO2 nanowires with the same orientation. We have also revealed that optimization of the unit cell parameter along the wire axis and consideration of quantum confinement and surface state effects are important to provide an interpretation of band-gap variation with respect to wall thickness in TiO2 nanotubes.

By means of ab initio calculations we have revealed the existence of sizable anisotropy in electronic properties of anatase TiO2 nanowires with respect to orientation: nanowires with 〈001〉, 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 axes are found to be direct band-gap, indirect band-gap and degenerate semiconductor materials, respectively. The degenerate semiconducting properties of 〈110〉-oriented TiO2 nanowires are predicted to be the intrinsic features closely connected with stoichiometry. A band-gap variation with nanowire diameter is also shown to display rather complex behavior characterized by a competition between quantum confinement and surface state effects that is fully compatible with the available contradictory experimental data. Finally, we propose a model to explain the band-gap variation with size in TiO2 nanowires, nanocrystals and thin films.

Charge redistribution at low oxygen vacancy concentrations in ceria have been studied in the framework of the density functional theory. We propose a model to approach the dilute limit using the results of supercell calculations. It allows one to reproduce the characteristic experimentally observed behavior of composition versus oxygen pressure dependency. We show that in the dilute limit the charge redistribution is likely to be driven by a mechanism different from the one involving electron localization on cerium atoms. We demonstrate that it can involve charge localization on light element impurities.

We present an ab initio density functional theory study of the binding behavior of CO and O(2) molecules to two- and three-dimensional isomers of Au(13) in order to investigate the potential catalytic activity of this cluster towards low-temperature CO oxidation. First, we scanned the potential energy surface of Au(13) and studied the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the relative stabilities of the 21 isomers we identified. While spin-orbit coupling increases the stability of the three-dimensional more than the two-dimensional isomers, the ground state structure at 0 K remains planar. Second, we systematically studied the binding of CO and O(2) molecules onto the planar and three-dimensional structures lowest in energy. We find that the isomer dimensionality has little effect on the binding of CO to Au(13). O(2), on the other hand, binds significantly to the three-dimensional isomer only. The simultaneous binding of multiple CO molecules decreases the binding energy per molecule. Still, the CO binding remains stronger than the O(2) binding. We did not find a synergetic effect due to the co-adsorption of both molecular species. On the three-dimensional isomer, we find O(2) dissociation to be exothermic with an dissociation barrier of 1.44 eV.

We performed a systematic density functional (DF) study of the adsorption of copper, silver, and gold adatoms on pristine graphene, especially accounting for van der Waals (vdW) interactions by the vdW-DF and PBE + D2 methods. In particular, we analyze the preferred adsorption site (among top, bridge, and hollow positions) together with the corresponding distortion of the graphene sheet and identify diffusion paths. Both vdW schemes show that the coinage metal atoms do bind to the graphene sheet and that in some cases the buckling of the graphene layer can be significant. Only the results for silver are qualitatively at variance with those obtained with the generalized gradient approximation, which gives no binding in this case. However in all three cases, we observe some quantitative differences between the vdW-DF and PBE + D2 methods. For instance the adsorption energies calculated with the PBE + D2 method are systematically higher than the ones obtained with vdW-DF. Motivated by the experimentally observed high mobility of gold atoms on graphene and their tendency to form nanometer-sized clusters, we present a density functional theory study of the ground state structures of small gold clusters on graphene, their mobility and clustering. Our detailed analysis of the electronic structures identifies the opportunity to form strong gold-gold bonds and the graphene-mediated interaction of the pre-adsorbed fragments as the driving forces behind gold's tendency to aggregate on graphene. While clusters containing up to three gold atoms have one unambiguous ground state structure, both gas phase isomers of a cluster with four gold atoms can be found on graphene. In the gas phase the diamond-shaped Au(4)(D) cluster is the ground state structure, whereas the Y-shaped Au(4)(Y) becomes the actual ground state when adsorbed on graphene. As we show, both clusters can be produced on graphene by two distinct clustering processes. We also studied in detail the stepwise formation of a gold dimer out of two pre-adsorbed adatoms, as well as the formation of Au(3). All reactions are exothermic and no further activation barriers, apart from the diffusion barriers, were found. The diffusion barriers of all studied clusters range from 4 to 36 meV only, and are substantially exceeded by the adsorption energies of - 0.1 to - 0.59 eV. This explains the high mobility of Au(1-4) on graphene along the C-C bonds.

We propose a procedure to accurately describe the structural parameters of an incommensurate phase using ab initio methods by approximating it with a set of analogous commensurate supercells. We apply this approach to obtain the structural parameters of the Sc-II phase, which has recently been identified as a complex incommensurate structure similar to Sr-V. The calculated incommensurate ratio gamma, lattice parameters, and Wyckoff positions of Sc-II are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. Our results show that gamma increases with pressure up to 60 GPa approaching but never reaching the commensurate value 4/3. Hence calculations do not confirm the prediction made based on the reanalyzing of experimental data. When pressure exceeds 70 GPa, gamma shows a sharp decrease that might be considered as the precursor of a new structural phase transition.

The melting curve of hydrogen was computed for pressures up to 200 GPa, using molecular dynamics. The inter- and intramolecular interactions were described by the reactive force field (ReaxFF) model. The model describes the pressure-volume equation of state solid hydrogen in good agreement with experiment up to pressures over 150 GPa, however the corresponding equation of state for liquid deviates considerably from density functional theory calculations. Due to this, the computed melting curve, although shares most of the known features, yields considerably lower melting temperatures compared to extrapolations of the available diamond anvil cell data. This failure of the ReaxFF model, which can reproduce many physical and chemical properties (including chemical reactions in hydrocarbons) of solid hydrogen, hints at an important change in the mechanism of interaction of hydrogen molecules in the liquid state.

Earth's solid-iron inner core is elastically anisotropic. Sound waves propagate faster along Earth's spin axis than in the equatorial plane. This anisotropy has previously been explained by a preferred orientation of the iron alloy hexagonal crystals. However, hexagonal iron becomes increasingly isotropic on increasing temperature at pressures of the inner core and is therefore unlikely to cause the anisotropy. An alternative explanation, supported by diamond anvil cell experiments, is that iron adopts a body-centered cubic form in the inner core. We show, by molecular dynamics simulations, that the body-centered cubic iron phase is extremely anisotropic to sound waves despite its high symmetry. Direct simulations of seismic wave propagation reveal an anisotropy of 12%, a value adequate to explain the anisotropy of the inner core.

Earth's solid-iron inner core has a low rigidity that manifests itself in the anomalously low velocities of shear waves as compared to shear wave velocities measured in iron alloys. Normally, when estimating the elastic properties of a polycrystal, one calculates an average over different orientations of a single crystal. This approach does not take into account the grain boundaries and defects that are likely to be abundant at high temperatures relevant for the inner core conditions. By using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that, if defects are considered, the calculated shear modulus and shear wave velocity decrease dramatically as compared to those estimates obtained from the averaged single-crystal values. Thus, the low shear wave velocity in the inner core is explained.

The core extends from the depth of 2,900 km to the center of the Earth and is composed mainly of an iron-rich alloy with nickel, with 10% of the mass comprised of lighter elements like hydrogen, but the exact composition is uncertain. We present a quantum mechanical first-principles study of the dynamical stability of FeH phases and their phonon densities of states at high pressure. Our free-energy calculations reveal a phonon-driven stabilization of dhcp FeH at low pressures, thus resolving the present contradiction between experimental observations and theoretical predictions. Calculations reveal a complex phase diagram for FeH under pressure with a dhcp --> hcp --> fcc sequence of structural transitions.

The conductance of monoatomic gold wires containing 3-7 gold atoms has been obtained from ab initio calculations. The transmission is found to vary significantly depending on the wire stretching and the number of incorporated atoms. Such oscillations are determined by the electronic structure of the one-dimensional (1D) part of the wire between the contacts. Our results indicate that the conductivity of 1D wires can be suppressed without breaking the contact.

Oxides with the cubic fluorite structure, e.g., ceria (CeO2), are known to be good solid electrolytes when they are doped with cations of lower valence than the host cations. The high ionic conductivity of doped ceria makes it an attractive electrolyte for solid oxide fuel cells, whose prospects as an environmentally friendly power source are very promising. In these electrolytes, the current is carried by oxygen ions that are transported by oxygen vacancies, present to compensate for the lower charge of the dopant cations. Ionic conductivity in ceria is closely related to oxygen-vacancy formation and migration properties. A clear physical picture of the connection between the choice of a dopant and the improvement of ionic conductivity in ceria is still lacking. Here we present a quantum-mechanical first-principles study of the influence of different trivalent impurities on these properties. Our results reveal a remarkable correspondence between vacancy properties at the atomic level and the macroscopic ionic conductivity. The key parameters comprise migration barriers for bulk diffusion and vacancy-dopant interactions, represented by association (binding) energies of vacancy-dopant clusters. The interactions can be divided into repulsive elastic and attractive electronic parts. In the optimal electrolyte, these parts should balance. This finding offers a simple and clear way to narrow the search for superior dopants and combinations of dopants. The ideal dopant should have an effective atomic number between 61 (Pm) and 62 (Sm), and we elaborate that combinations of Nd/Sm and Pr/Gd show enhanced ionic conductivity, as compared with that for each element separately.

The melting curve of MgSiO(3) perovskite has been determined by means of ab initio molecular dynamics complemented by effective pair potentials, and a new phenomenological model of melting. Using first principles ground state calculations, we find that the MgSiO(3) perovskite phase transforms into post perovskite at pressures above 100 GPa, in agreement with recent theoretical and experimental studies. We find that the melting curve of MgSiO(3), being very steep at pressures below 60 GPa, rapidly flattens on increasing pressure. The experimental controversy on the melting of the MgSiO(3) perovskite at high pressures is resolved, confirming the data by Zerr and Boehler.

We present direct molecular dynamics simulations of shock wave propagation in liquid deuterium for a wide range of impact velocities. The calculated Hugoniot is in perfect agreement with the gas-gun data as well as with the most recent experimental data. At high impact velocities we observe a smearing of the shock wave front and propagation of fast dissociated molecules well ahead of the compressed region. This smearing occurs due to the fast deuterium dissociation at the shock wave front. The experimental results are discussed in view of this effect.

The microscopic mechanism behind the extraordinary ability of ceria to store, release, and transport oxygen is explained on the basis of first-principles quantum mechanical simulations. The oxygen-vacancy formation energy in ceria is calculated for different local environments. The reversible CeO2-Ce2O3 reduction transition associated with oxygen-vacancy formation and migration is shown to be directly coupled with the quantum process of electron localization.
