If you decided to utilize deep learning in any image processing application, you would be faced with the issue, "Which architecture should I use?" due to the proliferation of existing CNN models and their advancements. Unfortunately, your answer will only be partially correct because each alternative has its advantage. The underlying idea of this research is to combine recent CNN models instead of selecting just one for optimal accuracy. Our study applied this idea to color lesion images to diagnose skin diseases. By ensembling, the recent CNNs, over 99% classification accuracy and over 97% sensitivity were achieved for the ISIC‐2017 dataset, which contains 2000 lesion images. Our mean sensitivity and AUC values for classifying 10000 color lesion images into seven different skin diseases (ISIC‐2018) were 0.825% and 0.922%, respectively. Asynchronous teledermatology (TD) has shown promise in improving access to dermatological care, yet studies reveal varied methodologies and results. This study aimed to design a mobile app using the store-and-forward model, marking a pioneering effort in Iran to facilitate written documentation of patient history and skin lesion imagery for accurate diagnosis. Conducted from July 2022 to July 2023, this study involved the development and implementation of a smartphone app to collect clinical data and photographs from 89 patients at a dermatology clinic. Diagnoses made at the clinic served as the gold standard. Three dermatologists independently reviewed the app-recorded data, providing diagnoses that were compared to in-person assessments using the Kappa coefficient and agreement percentage. Lesions were predominantly located on the whole body (47%), with psoriasis (19.1%), acne vulgaris (11.2%), and eczema (10%) being the most common. The overall inter-observer Kappa value demonstrated excellent agreement at 0.856. The study's findings endorse the use of a mobile app for TD as an effective adjunct in regions with scarce dermatological services, such as Iran. Many patients with chronic wounds have skin changes that can provide important clues as to the etiology of the wound and/or inappropriate treatment. As the largest human organ, the skin is easily accessible for clinical inspection. However, healthcare professional teams currently do not always assess and document these skin changes correctly and consistently. The board of the professional society Initiative Chronische Wunden (ICW) e. V. has therefore decided to draw up a position paper to clarify the most important technical terms for skin changes around wounds. This review discusses treatments for common dermatologic diagnoses addressed in primary care settings, with an emphasis on new and emerging treatments. Research on disease detection by leveraging machine learning techniques has been under significant focus. The use of machine learning techniques is important to detect critical diseases promptly and provide the appropriate treatment. Disease detection is a vital and sensitive task and while machine learning models may provide a robust solution, they can come across as complex and unintuitive. Therefore, it is important to gauge a better understanding of the predictions and trust the results. This paper takes up the crucial task of skin disease detection and introduces a hybrid machine learning model combining SVM and XGBoost for the detection task. The proposed model outperformed the existing machine learning models - Support Vector Machine (SVM), decision tree, and XGBoost with an accuracy of 99.26%. The increased accuracy is essential for detecting skin disease due to the similarity in the symptoms which make it challenging to differentiate between the different conditions. In order to foster trust and gain insights into the results we turn to the promising field of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). Although warmth is a key sign of inflammatory skin lesions, an objective assessment and follow-up of the temperature changes are rarely done in dermatology. The recent availability of accurate, sensitive and cost-effective thermography devices has made the implementation of thermography in clinical settings feasible. The aim of this scoping review is to summarize the evidence around the value and pitfalls of infrared thermography (IRT) when used in the dermatology clinic. A systematic literature search was done for original articles using IRT in skin disorders. The results concerning the potential of IRT for diagnosis, severity staging and monitoring of skin diseases were collected. The data on the sensitivity and specificity of IRT were extracted. Numerous studies have investigated IRT in various skin diseases, revealing its significant value in wound management, skin infections (e.g. cellulitis), vascular abnormalities and deep skin inflammation (e.g. hidradenitis suppurativa). For other dermatological applications such as the interpretation of intradermal and patch allergy testing, hyper-/anhidrosis, erythromelalgia, cold urticaria and lymph node metastases more complex calculations, provocation tests or active cooling procedures are required. Dermatologists should be aware of a learning curve of IRT and recognize factors contributing to false positive and false negative results. Background: Large language model (LLM)-powered chatbots such as ChatGPT have numerous applications. However, their effectiveness in dermatopathology has not been formally evaluated. Dermatopathological cases often require immunohistochemical workup. Here, we evaluate the performance of a chatbot in providing diagnostically useful information on immunohistochemistry relating to dermatological diseases., Methods: We queried a commonly used chatbot for the immunophenotypes of 51 cutaneous diseases, including a diverse variety of epidermal, adnexal, hematolymphoid, and soft tissue entities. We requested it to provide references for each diagnosis. All tests were repeated, compiled, quantified, and then compared with established literature standards., Results: Clustering analysis demonstrated that recommendations correlated with tumor type, suggesting chatbots can supply appropriate panels. However, a significant portion of recommendations were factually incorrect (13.9%). Citations were rarely clinically useful (24.5%). Many were confabulated (27.2%). Prompt responses for cutaneous adnexal lesions tended to be less accurate while literature references were less useful. Reference retrieval performance was associated with the number of PubMed entries per entity., Conclusions: This foundational study suggests that LLM-powered chatbots may be useful for generating immunohistochemical panels for dermatologic diagnoses. Background: Technology has revolutionized not only direct patient care but also diagnostic care processes. This study evaluates the transition from glass-slide microscopy to digital pathology (DP) at a multisite academic institution, using mixed methods to understand user perceptions of digitization and key productivity metrics of practice change., Methods: Participants included dermatopathologists, pathology reporting specialists, and clinicians. Electronic surveys and individual or group interviews included questions related to technology comfort, trust in DP, and rationale for DP adoption. Case volumes and turnaround times were abstracted from the electronic health record from Qtr 4 2020 to Qtr 1 2023 (inclusive). Data were analyzed descriptively, while interviews were analyzed using methods of content analysis., Results: Thirty-four staff completed surveys and 22 participated in an interview. Case volumes and diagnostic turnaround time did not differ across the institution during or after implementation timelines (p = 0.084; p = 0.133, respectively). 82.5% (28/34) of staff agreed that DP improved the sign-out experience, with accessibility, ergonomics, and annotation features described as key factors. Purpose of Review: To provide updated information on the prevalence, pathogenesis, diagnostics, and therapeutics of calcinosis cutis associated with systemic sclerosis (SSc)., Recent Findings: Observational studies show ethnic and geographical differences in the prevalence of calcinosis. In addition to clinical and serological associations, biochemical studies and in-vivo models have attempted to explain theories behind its pathogenesis, including prolonged state of inflammation, mechanical stress, hypoxia, and dysregulation in bone and phosphate metabolism. Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors may increase the risk for calcinosis in SSc. Few single center observational studies have shown mild benefit with minocycline and topical sodium thiosulfate., Summary: Calcinosis cutis is the deposition of insoluble calcium in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. It affects up to 40% of SSc patients and causes significant morbidity. Long disease duration, features of vascular dysfunction, and osteoporosis have been associated with calcinosis. Altered levels of inorganic pyrophosphate and fibroblast growth factor-23 have been implicated in dysregulated phosphate metabolism that may lead to calcinosis in SSc. Plain radiography can help with diagnosis and quantifying the calcinosis burden. Surgical treatment remains the most effective therapy when feasible. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by a mutation in the Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, and features recurrent sinus and pulmonary infections, steatorrhea, and malnutrition. CF is associated with diverse cutaneous manifestations, including transient reactive papulotranslucent acrokeratoderma of the palms, nutrient deficiency dermatoses, and vasculitis. Rarely these are presenting symptoms of CF, prior to pulmonary or gastrointestinal sequelae. Cutaneous drug eruptions are also highly common in patients with CF (PwCF) given frequent antibiotic exposure. Finally, CFTR modulating therapy, which has revolutionized CF management, is associated with cutaneous side effects ranging from acute urticaria to toxic epidermal necrolysis. Recognition of dermatologic clinical manifestations of CF is important to appropriately care for PwCF. Homelessness in the United States is a significant public health issue, with dermatologic disease being the most prevalent health concern among the undomiciled and sheltered populations. Despite a growing need for dermatologic care, the supply of dermatologists remains insufficient, contributing to disparities in healthcare access for this vulnerable group. This review aims to detail the spectrum of dermatologic conditions experienced by homeless individuals, identify barriers to adequate care, and explore teledermatology as a potential solution to bridge these gaps. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, analyzing studies and reports on dermatologic issues prevalent among the homeless population and the efficacy of teledermatology in addressing these concerns. Homeless individuals face a wide range of dermatologic problems, from common conditions like acne and eczema to severe issues such as cellulitis, leg ulcers, and skin cancer. Drug abuse, domestic and sexual abuse, and parasitic infestations further complicate the dermatologic health of this population. Teledermatology has emerged as a promising tool to enhance access to dermatologic care, showing significant improvements in clinical outcomes and accessibility, especially in underserved urban settings. However, challenges remain, such as the digital divide affecting the elderly and low-income populations, which could potentially exacerbate disparities. Addressing the dermatologic needs of the homeless population requires a multifaceted approach. Teledermatology offers a viable solution to improve care access and efficiency, but additional efforts are necessary to ensure inclusivity and avoid further marginalization. Volunteer-driven multidisciplinary clinics also play a crucial role in providing care, though they face challenges in continuity and resource availability. Objectives: Occupational skin diseases (OSDs) pose significant risks to the health and well-being of restaurant workers. However, there is presently limited evidence on the burden and determinants of OSDs among this occupational group. This research aims to estimate the prevalence and associated factors of suspected OSDs among restaurant workers in Peninsular Malaysia., Design: A secondary data analysis of the 2023 Registry of Occupational Disease Screening (RODS) was performed. The RODS survey tool, which included the Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire, a symptoms checklist and items on work-relatedness, was used to screen for OSDs. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify associated factors., Setting and Participants: Restaurant workers (n=300) registered in RODS from February 2023 to April 2023, aged 18 years and above and working in restaurants across Selangor, Melaka and Pahang for more than 1 year, were included in the study, whereas workers who had pre-existing skin diseases were excluded., Results: The prevalence of suspected OSDs among study participants was 12.3%. Higher odds of suspected OSDs among study participants were observed among those exposed to wet work (adjusted OR (AOR) 22.74, 95% CI 9.63 to 53.68) and moderate to high job stress levels (AOR 4.33, 95% CI 1.80 to 10.43)., Conclusions: These findings suggest that OSDs are a significant occupational health problem among restaurant workers. Background: Evidence concerning health care use related to virtual visits is conflicting. More research has been called for regarding the effectiveness of text-based virtual visits (eVisits). Therefore, we investigated patient characteristics, diagnoses, and subsequent health care contacts after eVisits to primary care., Methods: We conducted a register-based cohort study of eVisits to an all-virtual public primary care unit in Sweden and subsequent health care contacts within 14 days. Data for 2021 were acquired from the regional health care databases. Diagnoses were sorted into relevant diagnostic groups, such as skin diagnoses and respiratory tract diagnoses. Multiple logistic regression was performed with subsequent health care contact as the outcome variable and diagnostic group for the eVisit as the predictor variable. Analyses were adjusted for age, sex, and socioeconomic index., Results: There were 5817 eVisits to a nurse and 4267 eVisits to a general practitioner (N = 10 084). Most patients were 20 to 39 years of age (41.8%). Skin diagnoses were most frequent (47.3%), followed by respiratory tract diagnoses (19.9%). Approximately one-fourth (25.8%) of the patients who completed an eVisit with a nurse or a general practitioner had a subsequent face-to-face visit within 14 days, mostly in primary care. Subsequent contacts were more frequent after an eVisit to a nurse than to a general practitioner. After an eVisit to a general practitioner, patients with infections (especially respiratory tract but also urinary tract) and unspecified diagnoses (especially skin-related) were more likely to require further health care contact compared to a group with various other diagnoses., Conclusions: eVisits to an all-virtual primary care unit may be appropriate for uncomplicated medical complaints. Background : Raman spectroscopy is a well-known tool used in criminology, molecular biology, and histology. It is also applied to diagnose bone mineral disorders by taking advantage of the similarity of the structure of keratin and bone collagen. Raman spectroscopy can also be used in dermatology and diabetology. The purpose of the present review is to critically evaluate the available research about the use of Raman spectroscopy in the mentioned areas of medicine. Methodology : PubMed was searched for peer-reviewed articles on the subject of use of Raman spectroscopy in bone mineral disorders, dermatology, and diabetes mellitus. Results : Nail keratin and bone collagen are related structural proteins that require disulfide bond for structural stability. Therefore, Raman spectroscopy of keratin may have potential as a diagnostic tool for screening bone quality and distinguishing patients at risk of fracture for reasons different from low bone mineral density (BMD) in the adult women population. Raman spectroscopy can also investigate the changes in keratin's structure in nails affected by onychomycosis and distinguish between healthy and onychomycosis nail samples. It could also reduce the need for nail biopsy by distinguishing between dermatophytic and non-dermatophytic agents of onychomycosis. Additionally, Raman spectroscopy could expedite the diagnostic process in psoriasis (by assessing the secondary structure of keratin) and in diabetes mellitus (by examining the protein glycation level). Conclusions : In adult populations, Raman spectroscopy is a promising and safe method for assessing the structure of fingernails. However, data are scarce in the pediatric population; therefore, more studies are required in children.

Calcinosis cutis is classified into 5 main types: dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, iatrogenic, and calciphylaxis. However, it is occasionally misdiagnosed as a malignancy and its management remains challenging. Therefore, in this study, we report our diagnostic and treatment experiences with patients with calcinosis cutis and suggest strategies for improving patient care. This retrospective study included 7 patients (4 men, 3 women; 44.4 ± 32.0 years old) who visited our hospital between March 2013 and December 2022 and were diagnosed with calcinosis cutis through histopathological procedures. The patients underwent complete excision of the mass without a safety margin. Frozen biopsy was not performed during surgery. No significant intraoperative or postoperative complications were noted after the application of various imaging techniques for diagnosis and follow-up. All patients showed complete recovery. Follow-up showed no recurrence or complications in the 6 patients who completed 1 year of follow-up. Radiological tests such as plain radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are important for accurate diagnosis and treatment of calcinosis cutis. Background: Skin diseases in patients with skin of colour (Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI) are underrepresented in dermatology training, which may lead to lower quality of care for these patients. To address this underrepresentation in medical education, a newly developed seminar on skin type diversity using an interactive teaching method was implemented in an undergraduate medical curriculum. This study examined the effects of a seminar on the self-assessed competence of medical students in managing skin conditions in patients with skin of colour., Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among fourth-year undergraduate medical students at the University of Hamburg (Germany) between October 2023 and February 2024. Students' self-assessed competence was compared before and after the obligatory seminar (pre- and post-design)., Results: In total, 158 students participated in the survey. After the seminar, knowledge of the presentation of skin diseases in patients with skin of colour and the associated psychological burden, differences in the incidence of skin diseases in different skin types, and the ability to diagnose skin diseases in darker skin types increased. Most participants stated that they wanted to attend more courses on this topic., Discussion: Appropriate courses for medical students can improve their competence in managing different skin diseases in patients with skin of colour. Background and Objectives: Climate change is one of the biggest threats to the healthcare sector. In addition, healthcare contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Virtual consultations are a growing tool to assess patients. The carbon emissions from virtual consultations have the potential to be much smaller than in-person consultations, predominantly through reduced transportation. This study assesses the carbon footprint of general practitioner referrals for skin lesions evaluated by a store-and-forward teledermatology service compared to an estimated equivalent in-person review., Method: The carbon footprint of virtual consultations for skin lesions was compared to estimated equivalent in-person reviews based on the average transportation modalities in New Zealand., Results: Virtual consultations for 484 patients resulted in an average saving of 48 km and 11.17 kg carbon dioxide equivalent per consultation compared to equivalent in-person review., Discussion: This study encourages the use of store-and-forward skin lesion assessment as a way of reducing carbon emissions in the healthcare sector.

Background: Immunosuppressive therapy is essential for to prevent graft rejection in renal transplant patients; however, it is associated with elevating the risk of several pathologies in these patients particularly infectious and neoplastic conditions. In this study, we explore the diagnosis and treatment of skin lesions in renal transplant patients., Methods: A retrospective chart review of 12 renal transplant recipients referred to plastic and reconstructive surgery with skin lesions from 2000 to 2020 was performed., Results: The mean age of the 12 patients was 49.6 years. Time to plastic surgery after renal transplantation ranged between 1 and 16 years. Nine cases of basal cell carcinoma, 2 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, and 1 case of skin and soft tissue infection of the lower extremity and cutaneous extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type was observed. Flaps, skin grafts, and artificial dermis grafts constitute the main reconstructive methods. There were no postoperative infections or wound dehiscence., Conclusions: Cutaneous infections and skin malignancy account for most of the skin lesions developing after renal transplantation. Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder warrants equal attention and should not be disregarded. Early diagnosis and treatment significantly improve prognosis as patients with longer duration of transplant were found to have more aggressive tumors. Introduction: Melanocytic nevi (MN), warts, seborrheic keratoses (SK), and psoriasis are four common types of skin surface lesions that typically require dermatoscopic examination for definitive diagnosis in clinical dermatology settings. This process is labor-intensive and resource-consuming. Traditional methods for diagnosing skin lesions rely heavily on the subjective judgment of dermatologists, leading to issues in diagnostic accuracy and prolonged detection times., Objectives: This study aims to introduce a multispectral imaging (MSI)-based method for the early screening and detection of skin surface lesions. By capturing image data at multiple wavelengths, MSI can detect subtle spectral variations in tissues, significantly enhancing the differentiation of various skin conditions., Methods: The proposed method utilizes a pixel-level mosaic imaging spectrometer to capture multispectral images of lesions, followed by reflectance calibration and standardization. Regions of interest were manually extracted, and the spectral data were subsequently exported for analysis. Background: Chronic pruritus affecting primary non-lesional skin (CPNL) manifests as a common symptom across a spectrum of diseases spanning various medical specialties. Given the diverse etiological factors involved, diagnosing the underlying condition poses a significant challenge., Objectives: To provide a comprehensive overview of clinical, laboratory, and imaging diagnostics for CPNL., Materials and Methods: A thorough literature search on the diagnostics of chronic pruritus was conducted using PubMed with specific keywords "chronic pruritus AND non-lesional skin", "chronic itch AND non-lesional skin", "chronic pruritus AND diagnostics", "chronic itch AND diagnostics", "CKD-aP", "hepatic pruritus", "cholestatic pruritus", and "myeloproliferative neoplasms AND pruritus"., Results: A systematic diagnostic approach is recommended for patients with CPNL, guided by the prevalence of pruritus-associated diseases. Initial basic diagnostics facilitate a cost-effective and focused evaluation during the initial medical assessment. This review article aims to highlight the key clinical features, histopathology, and diagnostic pearls of several cutaneous diseases that commonly present in patients with darker pigmentation., Methods: A literature search was conducted, and a list of cutaneous diseases that frequently affect patients with darker pigmentation was compiled. A group of experts expounded upon those that were most common or misdiagnosed according to scientific evidence and clinical practice., Results: The diseases were divided into hypopigmented disorders, hyperpigmented disorders, scarring disorders, and alopecic disorders. Within each category, the etiology, clinical features, histopathology, and key histologic differential diagnoses are described and discussed., Conclusions: As many clinicians are taught that there are no effective treatment options or that these diseases are considered "cosmetic" in nature, patients often do not get a thorough medical workup or skin biopsy. Background: There is a huge demand-supply gap between the incidence of genital dermatoses (including sexually transmitted infections and non-venereal genital dermatoses) and physicians trained to manage them., Objectives: To find out the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based mobile application in the image diagnosis of genital dermatoses, and to compare it with primary care physicians (PCPs) and dermatologists., Methods: Photos of the genital diseases of consecutive patients presenting to the STD and genital diseases clinic were included. The gold standard diagnosis was established by the consensus of two certified dermatologists after examination and one positive investigation. Image diagnoses by the DermaAId application, two PCPs, and two dermatologists were recorded and compared to the gold standard diagnosis and to each other., Results: A total of 257 genital disease images, including 95 (37.0%) anogenital warts, 60 (22.2%) lichen sclerosus, 20 (7.8%) anogenital herpes, 15 (5.8%) tinea cruris, 14 (5.4%) molluscum contagiosum, 9 (3.5%) candidiasis, 8 (3.1%) scabies, 6 (2.3%) squamous cell carcinomas, were included. The top-1 correct diagnosis rate of the application was 68.9%, compared to the 50.4% of the PCPs and 73.2% of the dermatologists. The application significantly outperformed PCPs with regard to the correlation with the gold standard diagnosis (P < 0.0001), and matched that of the dermatologists., Conclusions: AI-based image diagnosis platforms can potentially be a low-cost rapid decision support tool for PCPs, integrated with syndromic management programs and direct-to-consumer services, and address healthcare inequities in managing genital dermatoses., (© 2024 the International Society of Dermatology.)

Allergy to insects is the most common skin allergy in horses. Pruritus in affected patients can be extreme. Face, ears, mane, and tail area are commonly affected areas. Diagnosis of insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) is clinical and is based on history, clinical signs, and response to repellents. Allergy tests are not to be used for diagnostic purposes. Currently, there is no specific treatment for IBH other than insect avoidance, treatment of secondary infections, and symptomatic relief of pruritus. Many allergic horses become also sensitized to pollens. Purpose of Review: Vulvar skin disease is an underrecognized pediatric condition encompassing a wide range of conditions, from isolated vulvar disease to vulvar manifestations of systemic illnesses. This review highlights the most current research discussing clinical features, risk factors, and treatments., Recent Findings: Recent studies confirm that labial adhesions resolve more quickly with estrogen treatment. Topical corticosteroids remain first-line for treatment of vulvar lichen sclerosus, and some procedural interventions are showing promising results. Latest evidence shows efficacy of biologic agents in hidradenitis suppurativa and vulvar Crohn's. Vaginal voiding remains an underrecognized cause of irritant vulvovaginitis. Lately vulvar aphthae have been associated with coronavirus disease 2019. Distinguishing between infantile perianal pyramidal protrusion, molluscum, and condyloma can be aided by differences in morphologic features., Summary: Vulvar dermatoses have a high impact on children's health and wellbeing. Clinician familiarity with recognition and latest advancements in vulvar dermatoses can aid in prompt diagnosis, management, and appropriate referrals. Autoimmune dermatopathies are not common in horses. These autoimmune diseases can be idiopathic or triggered by an antigen such as drugs, vaccines, or neoplasia. The most common one is pemphigus foliaceus, which manifests as a pustular, crusting eruption. Other more common pustular diseases should be ruled out before considering pemphigus. Vasculitis is relatively common in horses and can be triggered by a variety of antigenic stimulations. Systemic lupus and true idiopathic autoimmune vasculitis are very rare in horses. Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, teledermatology became a popular mode of health care delivery. Thus, deciphering which diagnoses are best suited for synchronous video visits is important to guide providers on appropriate patient care. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 1,647 submitted synchronous video visits from September 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021 at a single, large academic institution. Results: Video visits' follow-up rate was significantly associated with diagnosis subtype ( p < 0.001). Compared with patients with skin lesions and nonskin dermatologic conditions, patients with a rash had higher odds of being recommended to have their follow-up visit as a video visit (odds ratio [OR] = 0.222, p < 0.001; OR = 0.296, p < 0.001). Patients with a rash had lower odds of being recommended to have their follow-up visit as an in-person office visit when compared with skin lesions (OR = 9.679, p < 0.001), nonskin dermatologic conditions (OR = 4.055, p < 0.001), and other skin dermatologic conditions (OR = 2.23, p < 0.01). Demographically, employed, middle-aged patients with private insurance made up the majority of video visit usage. African American patients were less likely to utilize a video visit compared with Asian patients (OR = 2.06, p < 0.038). Conclusions: Certain dermatologic diagnoses, most notably rashes, are more conducive to video visit management. Rashes made up 86% of new patient video visits, were more likely to have video visit follow-up if needed and were more likely to not require further follow-up indicating that the management of rashes from initial diagnosis to completion in care is suitable for video visit management.

This continuing medical education series reviews updated Delphi consensus surface anatomy terminology through the lens of common medical and procedural dermatology scenarios, helping to underscore high-yield points that can be readily integrated into clinical practice to support patient care. Part I of this series will discuss the current state of surface anatomy terminology in dermatology, outline implications of precise and consistent terminology, provide an illustrative overview of high-yield consensus terminology, highlight prominent landmarks that can aid in critical diagnoses, and relate the importance of precise terminology to medical management. Correct coding is an important component of effective dermatology practice management. Over the past several years there have been updates to many commonly used codes within dermatology. This review highlights many of these updates, such as: the skin biopsy codes have been subdivided to reflect the different biopsy techniques. The definition of complex linear repairs has been updated and clarified. Outpatient and inpatient evaluation and management visits have new coding guidelines to determine level of care. Dermatopathology consultation codes have been updated and category III codes related to digital pathology have been created.
