Uranium is a toxic and pervasive geogenic contaminant often associated with organic matter. Its abundance and speciation in organic-rich permafrost soils are unknown, thereby limiting our ability to assess risks associated with uranium mobilization during permafrost thaw. In this study, we assessed uranium speciation in permafrost soil and porewater liberated during thaw using active-layer and permafrost samples from a study area in Yukon, Canada where elevated uranium concentrations occur in bedrock and groundwater. Permafrost contained 1.1-28 wt % organic carbon and elevated uranium (range 7.6-1040 μg g -1 , median 25 μg g -1 ) relative to local bedrock. The highest soil uranium concentrations were encountered in catchments hosting uranium-enriched bedrock and correlated positively with soil organic carbon. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, micro-X-ray fluorescence, and electron microscopy analyses revealed that solid-phase uranium predominantly occurs as uranium(VI) associated with soil organic matter. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses suggested the presence of uranium(VI) coordinated with carbon, consistent with bidentate-mononuclear uranyl complexation on carboxyl groups. Permafrost thaw produced circumneutral pH porewater (pH 6.2-7.5) with elevated dissolved uranium (0.5-203 μg L -1 ). Geochemical modeling indicated that calcium-uranyl-carbonate complexes dominated the dissolved uranium speciation. This study highlights that permafrost soil can mobilize uranium upon thaw and that uranium fate is linked to dynamic biogeochemical reactions involving organic carbon and groundwater chemistry.

We assess physical and chemical processes driving seasonal fluctuations in dissolved (<0.45 μm) trace metal(loid) concentrations in subarctic streams in discontinuous permafrost. Our analysis integrates multiple years of stream hydrometric and geochemical data with geochemical analyses of bedrock, permafrost, and active-layer samples. Three principal flow regimes govern stream hydrology: winter baseflow, spring freshet, and summer high flows. Metal(oid) concentrations in streams respond seasonally to these flow regimes. Baseflows are dominated by discharge of circumneutral-pH groundwater draining fractured bedrock. This discharge acts as a source of metals found as oxyanions or neutrally charged complexes, such as uranium and molybdenum. High stream flows are associated with peak concentrations of aluminium, cobalt, copper, iron, nickel, titanium, and vanadium. Concentrations of the metal cations aluminium, cobalt, copper, nickel, and titanium peak during freshet, when infiltration of snowmelt through organic-rich and moderately acidic soils favors their complexation with dissolved organic carbon. Concentrations of vanadium peak during summer high flows, likely reflecting flow through mineral soils in the active layer and involving reductive dissolution of iron(III)-(oxyhydr)oxides. The seasonal variation of arsenic concentrations is complex; at the majority of catchments it is sourced from shallow flowpaths in the active layer, but it can also be locally associated with discharge of deeper bedrock groundwater, which is spatially constrained by the presence of permafrost. Based on our analysis, we present a conceptual model that describes the flowpaths and processes governing metal(loid) release to streams in discontinuous permafrost. Reactive transport models have proven abilities to simulate the quantity and quality of drainage from mine waste rock. Tracer experiments indicate the presence of fast and slow flow regimes in many heterogeneous waste-rock piles. Although multidomain models have been developed specifically for systems with such distinctive hydrodynamics, there have been limited applications of multidomain reactive transport models to simulate composite drainage chemistries from waste-rock piles to date. This work evaluated the ability of dual-domain multicomponent reactive transport models (DDMRTMs) to reproduce breakthrough curves of conservative (chloride) and reactive (molybdenum) solutes observed at a well-characterized experimental waste-rock pile at the Antamina Mine, Peru. We found that the DDMRTM simulations quantitatively matched eight-year-long records of conservative transport through the waste-rock pile when parameterized mainly with field-measured properties obtained from the site and limited calibration. The DDMRTM model also provided a reasonable match to field observations of the reactive solute. The limited calibrated parameters are physically realistic, corroborating the ability of these multidomain models to reproduce the complex reactive-transport processes governing polluted rock drainage from large-scale waste-rock piles., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Most studies on the weathering of mine waste rock focus on the generation of acidic drainage with high metal concentrations, whereas metal(loid) release under neutral-rock drainage (NRD) conditions has received limited attention. Here, we present geochemical and mineralogical data from a long-term (>10 years) kinetic testing program with 50 waste-rock field barrels at the polymetallic Antamina mine in Peru. The weathering of most rock lithologies in the field experiments generated circumneutral to alkaline drainage (6 < pH < 9) but with concentrations of the oxyanion-forming metal(loid)s As, Mo, Se, and Sb in the mg/L range. The mobilization of As and Sb was particularly efficient from intrusive, marble and hornfels rocks that contained labile As- and Sb-sulfides, irrespective of bulk elemental content or waste-rock reactivity. High-alkalinity drainage from these materials sustained neutral-pH conditions that are unfavorable to oxyanion adsorption onto Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides and, therefore, enhanced As and Sb leaching. The release of Mo and Se from sulfidic skarn and intrusive waste rock was more proportional to elemental content but equally enhanced by pH-inhibited adsorption and negligible secondary mineral precipitation under NRD conditions. Our results demonstrate that oxyanion concentrations of environmental concern may be conveyed by neutral- to alkaline-pH waste-rock drainage and should be a focus of mine wastewater monitoring programs., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Molybdenum contamination is a concern in mining regions worldwide. Better understanding of processes controlling Mo mobility in mine wastes is critical for assessing potential impacts and developing water-quality management strategies associated with this element. Here, we used Mo stable isotope (δ 98/95 Mo) analyses to investigate geochemical controls on Mo mobility within a tailings management facility (TMF) featuring oxic and anoxic environments. These isotopic analyses were integrated with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and aqueous chemical data. Dissolved Mo concentrations were inversely correlated with δ 98/95 Mo values such that enrichment of heavy Mo isotopes in solution reflected attenuation processes. Inner-sphere complexation of Mo(VI) with ferrihydrite was the primary driver of Mo removal and was accompanied by a ca. 1‰ isotope fractionation. Limited Mo attenuation and isotope fractionation were observed in Fe(II)- and Mo-rich anoxic TMF seepage, while attenuation and isotope fractionation were greatest during discharge and oxidation of this seepage after discharge into a pond where Fe-(oxyhydr)oxide precipitation promoted Mo sorption. Overall, this study highlights the role of sorption onto Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides in attenuating Mo in oxic environments, a process which can be traced by Mo isotope analyses.

For the Western North America Mercury Synthesis, we compiled mercury records from 165 dated sediment cores from 138 natural lakes across western North America. Lake sediments are accepted as faithful recorders of historical mercury accumulation rates, and regional and sub-regional temporal and spatial trends were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Mercury accumulation rates in sediments have increased, on average, four times (4×) from 1850 to 2000 and continue to increase by approximately 0.2μg/m(2) per year. Lakes with the greatest increases were influenced by the Flin Flon smelter, followed by lakes directly affected by mining and wastewater discharges. Of lakes not directly affected by point sources, there is a clear separation in mercury accumulation rates between lakes with no/little watershed development and lakes with extensive watershed development for agricultural and/or residential purposes. Lakes in the latter group exhibited a sharp increase in mercury accumulation rates with human settlement, stabilizing after 1950 at five times (5×) 1850 rates. Mercury accumulation rates in lakes with no/little watershed development were controlled primarily by relative watershed size prior to 1850, and since have exhibited modest increases (in absolute terms and compared to that described above) associated with (regional and global) industrialization. A sub-regional analysis highlighted that in the ecoregion Northwestern Forest Mountains, <1% of mercury deposited to watersheds is delivered to lakes. Research is warranted to understand whether mountainous watersheds act as permanent sinks for mercury or if export of "legacy" mercury (deposited in years past) will delay recovery when/if emissions reductions are achieved., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. The stable isotope composition of molybdenum (Mo) and zinc (Zn) in mine wastes at the Antamina Copper-Zn-Mo mine, Peru, was characterized to investigate whether isotopic variation of these elements indicated metal attenuation processes in mine drainage. Waste rock and ore minerals were analyzed to identify the isotopic composition of Mo and Zn sources, namely molybdenites (MoS2) and sphalerites (ZnS). Molybdenum and Zn stable isotope ratios are reported relative to the NIST-SRM-3134 and PCIGR-1 Zn standards, respectively. δ(98)Mo among molybdenites ranged from -0.6 to +0.6‰ (n=9) while sphalerites showed no δ(66)Zn variations (0.11±0.01‰, 2 SD, n=5). Mine drainage samples from field waste rock weathering experiments were also analyzed to examine the extent of isotopic variability in the dissolved phase. Variations spanned 2.2‰ in δ(98)Mo (-0.1 to +2.1‰) and 0.7‰ in δ(66)Zn (-0.4 to +0.3‰) in mine drainage over a wide pH range (pH2.2-8.6). Lighter δ(66)Zn signatures were observed in alkaline pH conditions, which was consistent with Zn adsorption and/or hydrozincite (Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2) formation. However, in acidic mine drainage Zn isotopic compositions reflected the value of sphalerites. In addition, molybdenum isotope compositions in mine drainage were shifted towards heavier values (0.89±1.25‰, 2 SD, n=16), with some overlap, in comparison to molybdenites and waste rock (0.13±0.82‰, 2 SD, n=9). The cause of heavy Mo isotopic signatures in mine drainage was more difficult to resolve due to isotopic heterogeneity among ore minerals and a variety of possible overlapping processes including dissolution, adsorption and secondary mineral precipitation. This study shows that variation in metal isotope ratios are promising indicators of metal attenuation. The isotopic double-spike method allows for the determination of stable isotope ratios by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) with accuracy and precision in the range of ∼0.02 ‰ amu(-1), but its adoption has been hindered by the perceived difficulties in double-spike calibration and implementation. To facilitate the implementation of the double-spike approach, an explanation of the calibration and validation of a (97)Mo-(100)Mo double-spike protocol is given in more detail than has been presented elsewhere. The long-term external standard reproducibility is 0.05 ‰ on δ(98/95)Mo measurements of standards. δ(98/95)Mo values for seawater and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reference materials SDO-1 and BCR-2 measured in this study are 2.13 ± 0.04 ‰ (2 SD, n = 3), 0.79 ± 0.05 ‰ (2 SD, n = 11), and -0.04 ± 0.10 ‰ (2 SD, n = 3) relative to the NIST-SRM-3134. The double-spike method corrects for laboratory and instrumental fractionation which are not accounted for using other mass bias correction methods. Spike/sample molar ratios between 0.4 and 0.8 provide accurate isotope measurements; outside of this range, isotope measurements are inaccurate but corrections are possible when standards and samples are spiked at a similar ratio.

The extraction of bitumen from the Alberta oil sands using in-situ technologies is expanding at a rapid rate; however, investigations into the environmental impacts of oil sands development have focused on surface mining in the Athabasca region. We measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in soils, spruce needles, and lake sediment cores in the Cold Lake oil sands region to provide a historical and spatial perspective on PAH contamination related to in-situ extraction activities. A pronounced increase in PAH concentrations was recorded in one of two study lakes (Hilda Lake) corresponding to the onset of commercial bitumen production in ~1985. Distance from extraction rigs was not an important predictor of PAH concentrations in soils, although two samples located near installations were elevated in alkyl PAHs. Evidence of localized PAH contamination in Hilda Lake and two soil samples suggests that continued environmental monitoring is justified to assess PAH contamination as development intensifies., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The extraction of oil sands by in-situ methods in Alberta has expanded dramatically in the past two decades and will soon overtake surface mining as the dominant bitumen production process in the province. While concerns regarding regional metal emissions from oil sand mining and bitumen upgrading have arisen, there is a lack of information on emissions from the in-situ industry alone. Here we show using lake sediment records and regionally-distributed soil samples that in the absence of bitumen upgrading and surface mining, there has been no significant metal (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V) enrichment from the Cold Lake in-situ oil field. Sediment records demonstrate post-industrial Cd, Hg and Pb enrichment beginning in the early Twentieth Century, which has leveled off or declined since the onset of commercial in-situ bitumen production at Cold Lake in 1985., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
