A measurement of the double-spin asymmetry from electron-$^{3}$He scattering in the threshold region of two- and three-body breakup of $^{3}$He was performed at Jefferson Lab, for Q$^{2}$ values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/$c$)$^{2}$. The results of this measurement serve as a stringent test of our understanding of few-body systems. When compared with calculations from plane wave impulse approximation and Faddeev theory, we found that the Faddeev calculations, which use modern nuclear potentials and prescriptions for meson-exchange currents, demonstrate an overall good agreement with data.

The differential cross sections for the $^2$H(p,pp)n reaction have been measured for 84 angular configurations of the outgoing protons in the range of polar angles from 13 to 33 degrees with a proton beam of 108 MeV. Data have been collected in the Cyclotron Center Bronowice (CCB) at the Institute of Nuclear Physics PAS in Cracow, using the BINA detector setup. Analysis leading to determination of the breakup cross section values is described. Absolute normalization is obtained by normalization to the simultaneously measured $^2$H(p,d)p scattering events.Experimental results are compared to the state-of-the-art theoretical calculations. Global analysis shows significant influence of the Coulomb interaction and small effects of three nucleon force in the studied phase space region.

We discuss two approaches which, by applying the screening method, permit one to include the long range proton-proton (pp) Coulomb force in proton-deuteron (pd) momentum-space scattering calculations. In the first one, based on Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas (AGS) equation, presented in Phys. Rev. C{\bf{71}}, 054005 (2005) and {\bf{73}}, 057001 (2006), one needs to renormalize elastic scattering amplitude before calculating observables. In the second treatment, proposed by us in Eur. Phys. Journal A {\bf{41}}, 369 (2009), {\bf{41}}, 385 (2009), and arXiv:2310.03433 [nucl.th], this renormalization is avoided. For the proton induced deuteron breakup reaction both approaches require renormalization of the corresponding transition amplitudes. We derive the basic equations underlying both methods under the assumption that all contributing partial wave states are included and explain why in our approach renormalization of the elastic scattering amplitude is superfluous. We show that in order to take into account in the screening limit all partial waves it is required that four additional terms, based on the 3-dimensional and partial-wave projected pp Coulomb t-matrices, identical for both approaches, must appear in transition amplitudes. We propose a simplified approach to incorporate the long-range proton-proton (pp) Coulomb force in the three-nucleon (3N) scattering calculations, based on exact formulation presented in Eur. Phys. Journal A {\bf{41}}, 369 (2009) and {\bf{41}}, 385 (2009). It permits us to get elastic proton-deuteron (pd) scattering and breakup observables relatively simply by performing standard Faddeev calculations as known for the neutron-deuteron (nd) system. The basic ingredient in that approach is a 3-dimensional screened pp Coulomb t-matrix obtained by numerical solution of the 3-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger (LS) equation. Based on this t-matrix pure Coulomb transition terms contributing to elastic scattering and breakup are calculated without any need for partial wave decomposition. For elastic scattering such a term removes the Rutherford amplitude for point deuteron proton-deuteron (pd) scattering. For breakup it has never been applied in spite of the fact that its contributions could become important in some regions of the breakup phase space. We demonstrate numerically that the pd elastic observables can be determined directly from the resulting 3N amplitudes without any renormalization, simply by increasing the screening radius in order to reach the existing screening limit. However,for pd breakup the renormalization of the contributing on-shell amplitudes is required. We build a relativistic model to perform calculations of exclusive, semi-exclusive and inclusive unpolarized cross sections and various polarization observables in electron and neutrino scattering experiments with deuteron targets. The strong interaction dynamics is defined by an explicit dynamical unitary representation of the Poincar\'e group, where representations of space translations and rotations in the interacting and non-interacting representations are the same. The Argonne V18 potential is used to construct a relativistic nucleon-nucleon interaction reproducing the experimental deuteron binding energy and nucleon-nucleon scattering observables. Our formalism does not include the pion production channel and neglects two-body contributions in the electromagnetic as well as in the weak nuclear current operator. We show that it is applicable to processes at kinematics, where the internal two-nucleon energy remains below the pion production threshold but the magnitude of the three-momentum transfer extends at least to several GeV., Comment: 59 pages, 29 figures

The pi- + 2H -> n + n, pi- + 3H -> n + n + n, pi- + 3He -> n + d and pi- + 3He -> p + n + n capture reactions from the lowest atomic orbitals are studied under full inclusion of final state interactions. Our results are obtained with the single-nucleon and two-nucleon transition operators derived at leading order in chiral effective field theory. The initial and final three-nucleon states are calculated with the chiral nucleon-nucleon SMS potential up to N4LO+ augmented by the consistently regularized chiral N2LO three-nucleon potential. We found that absorption rates depend strongly on the nuclear pion absorption operator used, and its two-body parts change the rates by a few orders of magnitude. The final state interactions between nucleons generated by the two-nucleon forces are also important, while the three-nucleon interaction plays a visible role only in the pi- + 3He -> n + d reaction. Our absorption rate for the pi- + 2H -> n + n process is in good agreement with the experimental data from the hadronic ground-state broadening in pionic deuterium. The capture rates on 3He are also generally consistent with the spectroscopic data within error bars, though our central values are found to be systematically below the data. We show that for the three-body breakup processes the dominant contributions to the absorption rates arise from the quasi-free scattering and final-state interaction kinematical configurations., Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures; authors' list corrected

We present a comprehensive investigation of few-nucleon systems as well as light and medium-mass nuclei up to $A=48$ using the current Low Energy Nuclear Physics International Collaboration two-nucleon interactions in combination with the third-order (N$^2$LO) three-nucleon forces. To address the systematic overbinding of nuclei starting from $A \sim 10$ found in our earlier study utilizing the N$^2$LO two- and three-nucleon forces, we take into account higher-order corrections to the two-nucleon potentials up through fifth order in chiral effective field theory. The resulting Hamiltonian can be completely determined using the $A=3$ binding energies and selected nucleon-deuteron cross sections as input. It is then shown to predict other nucleon-deuteron scattering observables and spectra of light $p$-shell nuclei, for which a detailed correlated truncation error analysis is performed, in agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the predicted ground state energies of nuclei in the oxygen isotopic chain from $^{14}$O to $^{26}$O as well as $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca show a remarkably good agreement with experimental values, given that the Hamiltonian is fixed completely from the $A \leq 3$ data, once the fourth-order (N$^3$LO) corrections to the two-nucleon interactions are taken into account. On the other hand, the charge radii are found to be underpredicted by $\sim 10\%$ for the oxygen isotopes and by almost $20\%$ for $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables

We employ two models of the nucleon-nucleon force: the OPE-Gaussian as well as the chiral N4LO and N4LO+ interactions with semilocal regularization in momentum space to study correlations among two-nucleon and three-nucleon elastic scattering observables. These models contain a number of free parameters whose values and covariance matrices are evaluated from a fit to the two-nucleon data. Such detailed knowledge of parameters allows us to create, using various sets of statistically generated parameters, numerous versions of these potentials and next apply them to two- and three-nucleon scattering to make predictions of various observables at the reaction energies up to 200 MeV. This permits a systematic analysis of correlations among two-nucleon and three-nucleon observables, basing on a relatively big sample of predictions. We found that most observables in neutron-proton and neutron-deuteron systems are uncorrelated, but there are exceptions revealing strong correlations, which depend on the reaction energy and scattering angle. This information may be useful for precise fixing free parameters of two-nucleon and three-nucleon forces and for understanding dependencies and correlations between potential parameters and observables., Comment: 20 pages, 8 pdf figures

We investigate the importance of the three-nucleon (3N) force contact terms in elastic nucleon-deuteron (Nd) scattering by applying the N$^4$LO$^+$ chiral semi-local momentum space (SMS) regularized nucleon-nucleon (NN) chiral potential supplemented by N$^2$LO and all subleading N$^4$LO three-nucleon force (3NF) contact terms. Strength parameters of the contact terms were obtained by least squares fitting of theoretical predictions to cross section and analyzing powers data at three energies of the impinging nucleon. Although the N$^3$LO contributions to the 3N force were completely neglected, the results calculated with the contact terms multiplied by the fitted strength parameters yield an improved description of the elastic Nd scattering observables in a wide range of incoming nucleon energies below the pion production threshold., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures

We demonstrate a computational scheme which drastically decreases the required time to get theoretical predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon forces for observables in three-nucleon continuum. For a three-nucleon force containing N short-range terms all workload is reduced to solving N+1 Faddeev-type integral equations. That done, computation of observables for any combination of strengths of the contact terms is done in a flash. We present a perturbative approach to solving the three-nucleon continuum Faddeev equation. This approach is particularly well suited to dealing with variable strengths of contact terms in a chiral three-nucleon force. We use examples of observables in the elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering as well as in the deuteron breakup reaction to demonstrate high precision of the proposed procedure and its capability to reproduce exact results. A significant reduction of computer time achieved by the perturbative approach in comparison to exact treatment makes this approach valuable for fine-tuning of the three-nucleon Hamiltonian parameters., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We examine a description of available cross section data for symmetric space star (SST) configurations in the neutron-deuteron (nd) and proton-deuteron (pd) breakup reaction using numerically exact solutions of the three-nucleon (3N) Faddeev equation based on two- and three-nucleon (semi)phenomenological and chiral forces. The predicted SST cross sections are very stable with respect to the underlying dynamics for incoming nucleon laboratory energies below $\approx 25$ MeV. We discuss possible origins of the surprising discrepancies between theory and data found in low-energy nd and pd SST breakup measurements., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures

We present a systematic investigation of few-nucleon systems and light nuclei using the current LENPIC interactions comprising semilocal momentum-space regularized two- and three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order (N$^2$LO). Following our earlier study utilizing the coordinate-space regularized interactions, the two low-energy constants entering the three-body force are determined from the triton binding energy and the differential cross section minimum in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. Predictions are made for selected observables in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reactions, for properties of the $A=3$ and $A=4$ nuclei, and for spectra of $p$-shell nuclei up to $A = 16$. A comprehensive error analysis is performed including an estimation of correlated truncation uncertainties for nuclear spectra. The obtained predictions are generally found to agree with experimental data within errors. The first measurement of the $\vec{^3He}(\vec{\gamma},p)d$ process was performed at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S) facility at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) using a circularly polarized, monoenergetic $\gamma$-ray beam and a longitudinally polarized $^3$He target. The spin-dependent asymmetry and the contribution from the two-body photodisintegration to the $^3$He Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand are extracted and compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon system calculations at the incident photon energy of 29.0 MeV. A selection of measured cross sections and vector analyzing powers, Ax and Ay, are presented for the pd break-up reaction. The data are taken with a polarized proton beam energy of 135 MeV using the Big Instrument for Nuclear-polarization Analysis (BINA) at KVI, the Netherlands. With this setup, Ax is extracted for the first time for a large range of energies as well as polar and azimuthal angles of the two outgoing protons. For most of the configurations, the results at small and large relative azimuthal angles differ in behavior when comparing experimental data with the theoretical calculations. We also performed a more global comparison of our data with theoretical calculations using a chi-square ($\chi^2$) analysis. The cross-section results show huge values of $\chi^2$/d.o.f.. The absolute values of $\chi^2$/d.o.f. for the components of vector analyzing powers, Ax and Ay, are smaller than the ones for the cross section, partly due to larger uncertainties for these observables. However, also for these observables no satisfactory agreement is found for all angular combinations. This implies that the present models of a three-nucleon force are not able to provide a satisfactory description of experimental data.

We apply the chiral potential with the momentum space semi-local regularization to the $^2$H and $^3$He photodisintegration processes and to the (anti)neutrino induced deuteron breakup reactions. Specifically, the differential cross section, the photon analyzing power and the final proton polarization have been calculated for the deuteron photodisintegration at the photon energies 30 MeV and 100 MeV. For the $^3$He photodisintegration predictions for the semi-inclusive and exclusive differential cross sections are presented for the photon energies up to 120 MeV. The total cross section is calculated for the (anti)neutrino disintegrations of the deuteron for the (anti)neutrino energies below 200 MeV. The predictions based on the Argonne V18 potential or on the older chiral force with regularization applied in coordinate space are used for comparison. Using the fifth order chiral nucleon-nucleon potential supplemented with dominant contributions from the sixth order allows us to obtain converged predictions for the regarded reactions and observables. Our results based on the newest semi-local chiral potentials show even smaller cutoff dependence for the considered electroweak observables than the previously reported ones with a coordinate-space regulator. However, some of the studied polarization observables in the deuteron photodisintegration process reveal more sensitivity to the regulator value than the unpolarized cross section. The chiral potential regularized semi-locally in momentum space yields also fast convergence of results with the chiral order. A measurement of the analyzing powers for the $^2$H$(\vec{p},pp)n$ break-up reaction was carried out at KVI exploiting a polarized-proton beam at an energy of 135 MeV. The scattering angles and energies of the final-state protons were measured using the Big Instrument for Nuclear-polarization Analysis (BINA) with a nearly $4\pi$ geometrical acceptance. In this work, we analyzed a large number of kinematical geometries including forward-forward configurations in which both the final-state particles scatter to small polar angles and backward-forward configurations in which one of the final-state particles scatters to large polar angles. The results are compared with Faddeev calculations based on modern nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) potentials. Discrepancies between polarization data and theoretical predictions are observed for configurations corresponding to small relative azimuthal angles between the two final-state protons. These configurations show a large sensitivity to 3N force effects., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Differential cross sections for deuteron breakup $^{1}H(d, pp)n$ reaction were measured for a large set of 243 geometrical configurations at the beam energy of 80 MeV/nucleon. The cross section data are normalized by the luminosity factor obtained on the basis of simultaneous measurement of elastic scattering channel and the existing cross section data for this process. The results are compared to the theoretical calculations modeling nuclear interaction with and without taking into account the three-nucleon force (3NF) and Coulomb interaction. In the validated region of the phase space both the Coulomb force and 3NF play an important role in a good description of the data. There are also regions, where the improvements of description due to including 3NF are not sufficient.

Propagation of uncertainties from two-nucleon potential parameters to three-nucleon observables, that is statistical errors for the neutron-deuteron elastic scattering and the deuteron breakup reaction at neutron laboratory energies up to 200 MeV is investigated. To that end we use the chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction with the semi-local momentum-space regularization at various orders of the chiral expansion, exploiting knowledge of the covariance matrix of its parameters. For both reactions we compare statistical uncertainties for chiral predictions with the uncertainties obtained in the same way but for the semi-phenomenological One-Pion-Exchange two-nucleon force. In addition for the elastic scattering we show also the truncation errors arising from restriction to a given order of chiral predictions, estimated among others within the Bayesian method, and the cutoff dependence of chiral predictions. We find that the resulting statistical uncertainty is smaller than the truncation errors for the chiral force at lower orders of the chiral expansion. At the higher orders of the chiral expansion and at low energies the statistical errors exceed the truncation ones but at intermediate and higher energies truncation errors are more important. Overall, magnitudes of the theoretical uncertainties are small and amount up to 0.5\%-4\%, depending on the observable and energy. We also find that the magnitudes of statistical uncertainties for the chiral and semi-phenomenological potentials are similar and that the dependence of predictions on the regularization parameter values is important at all investigated energies., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures in 29 eps files

We investigate the sensitivity of the non-exclusive nucleon induced deuteron breakup reaction to the three-nucleon interaction and distributions of three-nucleon force effects in inclusive spectra. To this end we solve the three-nucleon Faddeev equation at a number of incoming nucleon laboratory energies using the CD Bonn nucleon-nucleon interaction alone or combined with the 2{\pi}-exchange Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon force. Based on these solutions energy spectra of an outgoing nucleon, at a specified detection angle as well as spectra integrated over that angle, are calculated. By integrating the spectra at a given angle over the energy of the outgoing nucleon the angular distributions of three-nucleon force effects in the breakup process are additionally obtained. Contrary to elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering, where at higher energies significant three-nucleon force effects were encountered for scattering angles around the minimum of the cross section, for the breakup process only moderate effects are found and they are restricted to forward angles. Results of the present investigation show that the large three-nucleon force effects found for some specific complete breakup configurations are reduced substantially in the incomplete spectra when averaging over contributing complete geometries is performed.

We report the first measurement of the \eep three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 ($^3$He) and tritium ($^3$H) at large momentum transfer ($\langle Q^2 \rangle \approx 1.9$ (GeV/c)$^2$) and $x_B>1$ kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta $40 \le p_{miss} \le 500$ MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within $\pm20\%$, is observed between data and calculations for the full $p_{miss}$ range for $^3$H and for $100 \le p_{miss} \le 350$ MeV/c for $^3$He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at $p_{miss} > 250$ MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of $^3$He plus $^3$H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire $p_{miss}$ range. Photodisintegration of polarized 3He by linearly or circularily polarized photons offers a rich choice of observables which can be calculated with high precision using a rigorous scheme of three-nucleon Faddeev equations. Using the (semi)phenomenological AV18 nucleon-nucleon potential combined with the Urbana IX three-nucleon force we investigate sensitivity of 3He photodisintegration observables to underlying currents taken in the form of a single-nucleon current supplemented by two-body contributions for $\pi$- and $\rho$-meson exchanges or incorporated by the Siegert theorem. Promising observables to be measured for two- and three-body fragmentation of 3He are identified. These observables form a challenging test ground for consistent forces and currents being under derivation within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. For thre-body 3He photodisintegration several kinematicaly complete configurations, including SST and FSI, are also discussed., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

Differential cross section for the 1H(d,pp)n breakup reaction at deuteron beam energy of 340 MeV has been measured with the use of WASA detector at COSY-Juelich. The set of proton-proton coincidences registered at Forward Detector has been analysed on dense grid of kinematic variables, giving in total around 5600 data points. The cross section data are compared to theoretical predictions based on the state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon potentials, combined with three-nucleon force, Coulomb interaction or carried out in a relativistic regime.

Understanding of the exact nature of three-nucleon forces is the most challenging topic in the field of nuclear physics. Three-nucleon break-up reaction is a good tool to look into the underlying dynamics of the nuclear force, thanks to its rich kinematical phase space which has different levels of sensitivity to three-nucleon force effects. The recent studies on few-nucleon systems have revealed that the current nuclear force models cannot describe nucleon-deuteron scattering data accurately. In the present work, the analyzing powers of the proton-deuteron break-up reaction obtained using a 190 MeV polarized proton beam will be discussed. We present for the first time the vector analyzing powers for the kinematics in which one of the protons scatters to intermediate and large scattering angles at this energy. Response functions, differential cross sections and total cross sections for several (anti)neutrino induced reactions on 2H, 3He and 3H are calculated in momentum space for (anti)neutrino energies up to 160 MeV, using the AV18 nucleon-nucleon potential and a single-nucleon weak current operator. We discuss the current status of chiral effective field theory in the three-nucleon sector and present selected results for nucleon-deuteron scattering observables based on semilocal momentum-space-regularized chiral two-nucleon potentials together with consistently regularized three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order. Using a Bayesian model for estimating truncation errors, the obtained results are found to provide a good description of the experimental data. We confirm our earlier findings that a high-precision description of nucleon-deuteron scattering data below pion production threshold will require the theory to be pushed to fifth chiral order. This conclusion is substantiated by an exploratory study of selected short-range contributions to the three-nucleon force at that order, which, as expected, are found to have significant effects on polarization observables at intermediate and high energies. The isospin character of p-n pairs at large relative momentum has been observed for the first time in the 16O ground state. A strong population of the J,T=1,0 state and a very weak population of the J,T=0,1 state were observed in neutron pick up domain of 16O(p,pd) at 392 MeV. This strong isospin dependence at large momentum transfer is not reproduced by the distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations with known spectroscopic amplitudes. The results indicate the presence of high-momentum protons and neutrons induced by the tensor interactions in ground state of 16O., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

The $\pi^- + {^2{\rm H}} \rightarrow \gamma + n + n$, $\pi^- + {^3{\rm He}} \rightarrow \gamma + {^3{\rm H}}$, $\pi^- + {^3{\rm He}} \rightarrow \gamma + n + d$, $\pi^- + {^3{\rm He}} \rightarrow \gamma + n + n + p$ and $\pi^- + {^3{\rm H}} \rightarrow \gamma + n + n + n$ capture reactions are studied with the AV18 two-nucleon potential and the Urbana~IX three-nucleon potential. We provide for the first time realistic predictions for the differential and total capture rates for all these processes, treating consistently the initial and final nuclear states. Our results are based on the single nucleon Kroll-Ruderman-type transition operator and concentrate on the full treatment of the nuclear final state interactions. We present a complete calculation of nucleon-deuteron scattering as well as ground and low-lying excited states of light nuclei in the mass range A=3-16 up through next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory using semilocal coordinate-space regularized two- and three-nucleon forces. It is shown that both of the low-energy constants entering the three-nucleon force at this order can be reliably determined from the triton binding energy and the differential cross section minimum in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. For most of these processes we provide predictions for the total cross sections and in the case of the (anti)neutrino-$^3$He and (anti)neutrino-$^3$H inelastic scattering we compute examples of essential response functions, using the AV18 nucleon-nucleon potential and a single-nucleon weak current operator. For the reactions with the deuteron we study relativistic effects in the final state kinematics and compare two-nucleon scattering states obtained in momentum and coordinate spaces. Our results from momentum space are compared with the theoretical predictions by G.Shen et al., Phys. Rev. C 86, 035503 (2012). The observed disagreement can be attributed to the differences in kinematics and in the weak current operator., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures in 49 eps files

We report on a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in electron-induced breakup of $^3\mathrm{He}$ proceeding to $\mathrm{pd}$ and $\mathrm{ppn}$ final states, performed in quasi-elastic kinematics at $Q^2 = 0.25\,(\mathrm{GeV}/c)^2$ for missing momenta up to $250\,\mathrm{MeV}/c$. These observables represent highly sensitive tools to investigate the electromagnetic and spin structure of $^3\mathrm{He}$ and the relative importance of two- and three-body effects involved in the breakup reaction dynamics. The measured asymmetries cannot be satisfactorily reproduced by state-of-the-art calculations of $^3\mathrm{He}$ unless their three-body segment is adjusted, indicating that the spin-dependent part of the nuclear interaction governing the three-body breakup process is much smaller than previously thought., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Theoretical uncertainties of various types are discussed for the nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering observables at the incoming nucleon laboratory energies up to 200 MeV. We are especially interested in the statistical errors arising from uncertainties of parameters of a nucleon-nucleon interaction. The obtained uncertainties of the differential cross section and numerous scattering observables are in general small, grow with the reaction energy and amount up to a few percent at 200 MeV. We compare these uncertainties with the other types of theoretical errors like truncation errors, numerical uncertainties and uncertainties arising from using the various models of nuclear interaction. We find the latter ones to be dominant source of uncertainties of modern predictions for the three-nucleon scattering observables. To perform above mentioned studies we use the One-Pion-Exchange Gaussian potential derived by the Granada group, for which the covariance matrix of its parameters is known, and solve the Faddeev equation for the nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering. Thus beside studying theoretical uncertainties we also show a description of the nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering data by the One-Pion-Exchange Gaussian model and compare it with results obtained with other nucleon-nucleon potentials, including chiral N$^4$LO forces from the Bochum-Bonn and Moscow(Idaho)-Salamanca groups. In this way we confirm the usefulness and high quality of the One-Pion-Exchange Gaussian force., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures in 64 eps files

We employ a variety of ab initio methods including Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations, No-Core Configuration Interaction Approach, Coupled-Cluster Theory and In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group to perform a comprehensive analysis of the nucleon-deuteron elastic and breakup reactions and selected properties of light and medium-mass nuclei up to 48Ca using the recently constructed semilocal coordinate-space regularized chiral nucleon-nucleon potentials. We compare the results with those based on selected phenomenological and chiral EFT two-nucleon potentials, discuss the convergence pattern of the chiral expansion and estimate the achievable theoretical accuracy at various chiral orders using the novel approach to quantify truncation errors of the chiral expansion without relying on cutoff variation. We also address the robustness of this method and explore alternative ways to estimate the theoretical uncertainty from the truncation of the chiral expansion., Comment: 34 pages, 15 figures, 11 tables

The nucleon-nucleon J-matrix Inverse Scattering Potential JISP16 is applied to elastic nucleon-deuteron (Nd) scattering and the deuteron breakup process at the lab. nucleon energies up to 135 MeV. The formalism of the Faddeev equations is used to obtain 3N scattering states. We compare predictions based on the JISP16 force with data and with results based on various NN interactions: the CD Bonn, the AV18, the chiral force with the semi-local regularization at the 5th order of the chiral expansion and with low-momentum interactions obtained from the CD Bonn force as well as with the predictions from the combination of the AV18 NN interaction and the Urbana IX 3N force. JISP16 provides a satisfactory description of some observables at low energies but strong deviations from data as well as from standard and chiral potential predictions with increasing energy. However, there are also polarization observables at low energies for which the JISP16 predictions differ from those based on the other forces by a factor of two. The reason for such a behavior can be traced back to the P-wave components of the JISP16 force. At higher energies the deviations can be enhanced by an interference with higher partial waves and by the properties of the JISP16 deuteron wave function. In addition, we compare the energy and angular dependence of predictions based on the JISP16 force with the results of the low-momentum forces obtained with different values of the momentum cutoff parameter. We found that such low-momentum forces can be employed to interpret the Nd elastic scattering data only below some specific energy which depends on the cutoff parameter. Since JISP16 is defined in a finite oscillator basis, it has properties similar to low momentum interactions and its application to the description of Nd scattering data is limited to a low momentum transfer region., Comment: 26 pages, 12 eps figures; Version accepted to Phys. The muon capture on 3H leading to muonic neutrino and three neutrons in the final state is studied under full inclusion of final state interactions. Predictions for the three-body break-up of 3H are calculated with the AV18 potential, augmented by the Urbana IX three-nucleon force. Our results are based on the single nucleon weak current operator comprising the dominant relativistic corrections. This work is a natural extension of our investigations of the muon capture on 3He leading to 3H or n+d or n+n+p and muonic neutrino in the final state, presented in Phys. Rev. We discuss the role of the three-nucleon isospin T=3/2 amplitude in elastic neutron-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reaction. The contribution of this amplitude originates from charge-independence breaking of the nucleon-nucleon potential and is driven by the difference between neutron-neutron (proton-proton) and neutron-proton forces. We study the magnitude of that contribution to the elastic scattering and breakup observables, taking the locally regularized chiral N4LO nucleon-nucleon potential supplemented by the chiral N2LO three-nucleon force. For comparison we employ also the Av18 nucleon-nucleon potential combined with the Urbana IX three-nucleon force. We find that the isospin T=3/2 component is important for the breakup reaction and the proper treatment of charge-independence breaking in this case requires the inclusion of the 1S0 state with isospin T=3/2. For neutron-deuteron elastic scattering the T=3/2 contributions are insignificant and charge-independence breaking can be accounted for by using the effective t-matrix generated with the so-called "2/3-1/3" rule., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, 3 Tables

The recently developed semi-local improved chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction is used for the first time to study several electromagnetic and weak processes at energies below the pion production threshold. Cross sections and selected polarization observables for deuteron photodisintegration, nucleon-deuteron radiative capture, three-body $^3$He photodisintegration as well as capture rates for decays of the muonic $^2$H and $^3$He atoms are calculated. The Lippmann-Schwinger and Faddeev equations in momentum space are solved to obtain nuclear states. The electromagnetic current operator is taken as a single nucleon current supplemented by many-body contributions induced via the Siegert theorem. For muon capture processes the nonrelativistic weak current together with the dominant relativistic corrections is used. Our results compare well with experimental data, demonstrating the same quality as is observed for the semi-phenomenological AV18 potential. Compared to the older version of the chiral potential with a nonlocal regularization, a much smaller cut-off dependence is found for the state-of-art chiral local interaction employed in this paper. We report new measurements of the doubly-polarized photodisintegration of $^3$He at an incident photon energy of 16.5 MeV, carried out at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S) facility located at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The spin-dependent double-differential cross sections and the contribution from the three--body channel to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integrand were extracted and compared with the state-of-the-art three--body calculations. The calculations, which include the Coulomb interaction and are in good agreement with the results of previous measurements at 12.8 and 14.7 MeV, can no longer describe the cross section results at 16.5 MeV. The GDH integrand was found to be about one standard deviation larger than the maximum value predicted by the theories., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We apply improved nucleon-nucleon potentials up to fifth order in chiral effective field theory, along with a new analysis of the theoretical truncation errors, to study nucleon-deuteron (Nd) scattering and selected low-energy observables in 3H, 4He, and 6Li. Calculations beyond second order differ from experiment well outside the range of quantified uncertainties, providing truly unambiguous evidence for missing three-nucleon forces within the employed framework. The sizes of the required three-nucleon force contributions agree well with expectations based on Weinberg's power counting. We identify the energy range in elastic Nd scattering best suited to study three-nucleon force effects and estimate the achievable accuracy of theoretical predictions for various observables., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We present a novel framework to decompose three-nucleon forces in a momentum space partial-wave basis. The new approach is computationally much more efficient than previous methods and opens the way to ab initio studies of few-nucleon scattering processes, nuclei and nuclear matter based on higher-order chiral 3N forces. We use the new framework to calculate matrix elements of chiral three-nucleon forces at N2LO and N3LO in large basis spaces and carry out benchmark calculations for neutron matter and symmetric nuclear matter. We also study the size of the individual three-nucleon force contributions for $^3$H. For nonlocal regulators, we find that the sub-leading terms, which have been neglected in most calculations so far, provide important contributions. All matrix elements are calculated and stored in a user-friendly way, such that values of low-energy constants as well as the form of regulator functions can be chosen freely., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The nucleon-deuteron radiative capture process is investigated using the chiral nuclear potentials and the electromagnetic currents developed by the Bochum-Bonn group. While the strong interaction is taken up to the next-to-next-to-leading order, the electromagnetic current consists of a single nucleon current, the leading one-pion exchange one and is supplemented by contributions from the long-range two-pion exchange current at next-to-leading-order. The theoretical predictions for the cross sections as well as analyzing powers show strong dependence on the values of regularization parameters. Only small effects of the three-nucleon force and the long-range two-pion exchange current are observed. The dependence on the choice of regularization parameters results in a big theoretical uncertainty and clearly points to the necessity to include corrections from higher orders of the chiral expansion both for the nuclear forces and currents., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We solve three-nucleon Faddeev equations with nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces derived consistently in the framework of chiral perturbation theory at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. In this first investigation we include only matrix elements of the three-nucleon force for partial waves with the total two-nucleon (three-nucleon) angular momenta up to 3 (5/2). Low-energy neutron-deuteron elastic scattering and deuteron breakup reaction are studied. Emphasis is put on Ay puzzle in elastic scattering and cross sections in symmetric-space-star and neutron-neutron quasi-free-scattering breakup configurations, for which large discrepancies between data and theory have been reported., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

We present a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the $^3\vec{\mathrm{He}}(\vec{\mathrm{e}},\mathrm{e}'\mathrm{d})$ reaction. This particular process is a uniquely sensitive probe of hadron dynamics in $^3\mathrm{He}$ and the structure of the underlying electromagnetic currents. The measurements have been performed in and around quasi-elastic kinematics at $Q^2 = 0.25\,(\mathrm{GeV}/c)^2$ for missing momenta up to $270\,\mathrm{MeV}/c$. The asymmetries are in fair agreement with the state-of-the-art calculations in terms of their functional dependencies on $p_\mathrm{m}$ and $\omega$, but are systematically offset. Beyond the region of the quasi-elastic peak, the discrepancies become even more pronounced. Thus, our measurements have been able to reveal deficiencies in the most sophisticated calculations of the three-body nuclear system, and indicate that further refinement in the treatment of their two- and/or three-body dynamics is required., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication at Phys. The mu + 2H -> nu + n + n, mu + 3He -> nu + 3H, mu + 3He -> nu + n + d and mu + 3He -> nu + n + n + p capture reactions are studied with various realistic potentials under full inclusion of final state interactions. Our results for the two- and three-body break-up of 3He are calculated with a variety of nucleon-nucleon potentials, among which is the AV18 potential, augmented by the Urbana~IX three-nucleon potential. Most of our results are based on the single nucleon weak current operator. As a first step, we have tested our calculation in the case of the mu + 2H -> nu + n + n and mu + 3He -> nu + 3H reactions, for which theoretical predictions obtained in a comparable framework are available. Additionally, we have been able to obtain for the first time a realistic estimate for the total rates of the muon capture reactions on 3He in the break-up channels: 544 1/s and 154 1/s for the n + d and n + n + p channels, respectively. Our results have also been compared with the most recent experimental data, finding a rough agreement for the total capture rates, but failing to reproduce the differential capture rates., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures

The first measurement of the three-body photodisintegration of longitudinally-polarized ^3He with a circularly-polarized \gamma-ray beam was carried out at the High Intensity \gamma-ray Source (HI\gamma S) facility located at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The spin-dependent double-differential cross sections and the contributions from the three-body photodisintegration to the ^3He GDH integrand are presented and compared with state-of-the-art three-body calculations at the incident photon energies of 12.8 and 14.7 MeV. We compare results from the traditional partial wave treatment of deuteron electro-disintegration with a new approach that uses three dimensional formalism. The new framework for the two-nucleon (2N) system using a complete set of isospin - spin states made it possible to construct simple implementations that employ a very general operator form of the current operator and 2N states., Comment: 24 pages, 15 eps figures

We compare three methods to calculate the nucleon-nucleon t-matrix based on the three-dimensional formulation of J. Golak et al., Phys. Rev. C 81, 034006, (2010). In the first place we solve a system of complex linear inhomogeneous equations directly for the t-matrix. Our second method is based on iterations and a variant of the Lanczos algorithm. In the third case we obtain the t-matrix in two steps, solving a system of real linear equations for the k-matrix expansion coefficients and then solving an on-shell equation, which connects the scalar coefficients of the k- and t-matrices. A very good agreement among the three methods is demonstrated for selected nucleon-nucleon scattering observables using a chiral next-to-next-to-leading-order neutron-proton potential. We also apply our three-dimensional framework to the demanding problem of proton-proton scattering, using a corresponding version of the nucleon-nucleon potential and supplementing it with the (screened) Coulomb force, taken also in the three-dimensional form. We show converged results for two different screening functions and find a very good agreement with other methods dealing with proton-proton scattering., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures (54 eps files)
