Abstract

In our earlier papers it was demonstrated that the plasma pressure decreases with the growing atomic number of the target material. In this context a question arose about the possibility to collimate the Al plasma outflow by using the plastic plasma as a compressor. For that purpose a plastic target with an Al cylindrical insert of 400 μm in diameter was used. The experiment was carried out at the PALS laser facility. The laser provided a 250 ps (FWHM) pulse with the energy of 130 J at the third harmonic frequency (λ3 = 0.438 μm). The focal spot diameters (ΦL) 800, 1000, and 1200 μm ensured predominance of the plastic plasma, its transversal extension being large enough for the effective Al plasma compression. To study the Al plasma stream propagation and its interaction with the plastic plasma, a 3-frame interferometric system and 4-frame x-ray camera were used. The information on distribution of electron temperature in the outflowing Al plasma was provided by x-ray spectroscopy. The experimental results reported in the paper are discussed by virtue of a simple theoretical analysis.

Abstract

The numerical simulation of turbulence and flows in almost ideal, large-Reynolds-number astrophysical plasmas motivates the implementation of almost conservative MHD computer codes. They should efficiently calculate, use highly parallelized schemes scaling well with large numbers of CPU cores, allows to obtain a high grid resolution over large simulation domains and which can easily be adapted to new computer architectures as well as to new initial and boundary conditions, allow modular extensions. The new massively parallel simulation code GOEMHD3 enables efficient and fast simulations of almost ideal, large-Reynolds-number astrophysical plasma flows, well resolved and on huge grids covering large domains. Its abilities are validated by major tests of ideal and weakly dissipative plasma phenomena. The high resolution ($2048^3$ grid points) simulation of a large part of the solar corona above an observed active region proved the excellent parallel scalability of the code using more than 30.000 processor cores., Comment: The revised version

Abstract

A novel efficient scheme of acceleration and collimation of dense plasma is proposed and examined. In the proposed scheme, a target placed in a cavity at the entrance of a guiding channel is irradiated by a laser beam introduced into the cavity through a hole and accelerated along the channel by the pressure created and accumulated in the cavity by the hot plasma expanding from the target and the cavity walls. Using 1.315-um, 0.3-ns laser pulse of energy up to 200J and a thin CH target, it was shown that the forward accelerated dense plasma projectile produced from the target can be effectively guided and collimated in the 2-mm cylindrical guiding channel and the energetic efficiency of acceleration in this scheme is an order of magnitude higher than in the case of conventional ablative acceleration., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

This paper describes the results of a series of experiments conducted with the PALS laser at intensities of interest for the shock ignition approach to inertial fusion. In particular, we addressed the generation of hot electrons (HE) (determining their average energy and number), as well as the parametric instabilities which are producing them. In addition, we studied the impact of HE on the formation and dynamics of strong shocks.

Abstract

We have analyzed the laser driven shock behavior in experiments with double focal spots, in particular, its cumulative effect in double layer foam-metal targets, explained by multiple collisions of individual shocks in the structured target. Some of experimental shock dynamics results are in a good agreement with the theoretical and numerical predictions, but others demand for new models.

Abstract

The paper deals with the possibilities of arsenic analysis in the soil. The aim is the selection and verification of the methods for analysis of As in the soil, which seem to be suitable for risk evaluation based on the increased As soil load. Economical and analytical availability of the methods is an important criterion. A sample set of 6 heavily contaminated soils was used to compare application potential of prevalent as well as less common procedures for determination of arsenic forms in soils. The results showed that substitution of analytically more demanding As total content analysis and sequential analysis for simple extraction using one-off agents seemed to be promising in many cases. The comparison and evaluation of statistical correlation of used methods of As analysis in the soil was realised. The results suggested that using the combination of simple 1M NH4NO3 extraction and determination procedure for amorphous Fe forms in the soil (the Tamm method) was suitable for the risk assessment stemming from the As contamination without necessity of the application of more complicated sequential extraction procedures.

Abstract

The process of laser beam homogenization in a gas medium placed in front of a thin metallic foil has been studied. Experiments were performed using the Prague Asterix Laser System iodine laser [Jungwirth , Phys. Plasmas 8, 2495 (2001)] working at 0.44 mu m wavelength and irradiance of about 10(15) W/cm(2). Homogenization was detected both by directly analyzing the transmitted laser beam and by studying the shock breakout on the foil rear side. Results show that the gas ionization by the laser pulse induces a strong refraction and produces an effective smoothing of large-scale intensity nonuniformities

Abstract

Smoothing of laser beam non-uniformities using gas jets has been studied. The experiment has been performed with the PALS laser working at 0.44 mu m with an intensity of about 10(15) W/cm(2). The laser beam has been split in two by a prism thus creating an artificial large-scale non-uniformity (approximate to 90 mu m). We recorded time resolved and static images of laser-gas jet interaction with and without an Al target. Multi 1D and 2D simulations show that such interaction acts redistributing the over-intensities over larger surface. This effect has to be attributed to ionization processes with consequent laser beam refraction. Results show that Argon gas jet produces a strong refraction of the laser beam thus strongly reducing the initial two spots separation.

Abstract

An experimental investigation about laser beam homogenization using gas jets is presented in this paper. The results, obtained at PALS iodine laser facility using the 3 omega wavelength and irradiances of about 10(15) W/cm(2), showed that the use of high pressure gas jets (up to 10 bar of Argon) can be effective in reducing strong laser beam non-uniformities artificially introduced by inserting a wedge arrangement on half of the beam.

Abstract

We studied the process of laser beam homogenization in a gas medium placed in front of a thin metallic foil. Experiments were performed using the Prague PALS iodine laser working at 0.44 mu m wavelength and irradiances of about 10(15) W cm(-2). Homogenization was detected both by directly analysing the transmitted laser beam and by studying the shock breakout on the foil rear side. Results show that the gas ionization by the laser pulse induces a strong refraction and produces an effective smoothing of large-scale intensity non-uniformities.

Abstract

We present the experimental results, and their analysis, connected to the possibility to control laser inhomogeneities exploiting the non-uniform electron density distribution created by the laser while propagating in a gas jet. The induced self-refraction in the plasma created in the gas medium results in re-distributing local over-intensities over larger surfaces. The experiment at the PALS laser facility has been performed creating a large non-uniformity by a wedge arrangement and recording the static and dynamic images with and without the coupling to an Al target.
