We report the discovery of eclipses by circumstellar disc material associated with the young star PDS 110 in the Ori OB1a association using the SuperWASP and KELT surveys. PDS 110 (HD 290380, IRAS 05209-0107) is a rare Fe/Ge-type star, a ~10 Myr-old accreting intermediate-mass star showing strong infrared excess (L$_{\rm IR}$/L$_{\rm bol}$ ~ 0.25). Two extremely similar eclipses with a depth of ~30\% and duration ~25 days were observed in November 2008 and January 2011. We interpret the eclipses as caused by the same structure with an orbital period of $808\pm2$ days. Shearing over a single orbit rules out diffuse dust clumps as the cause, favouring the hypothesis of a companion at ~2AU. The characteristics of the eclipses are consistent with transits by an unseen low-mass (1.8-70M$_{Jup}$) planet or brown dwarf with a circum-secondary disc of diameter ~0.3 AU. We report the joint WASP/KELT discovery of WASP-167b/KELT-13b, a transiting hot Jupiter with a 2.02-d orbit around a $V$ = 10.5, F1V star with [Fe/H] = 0.1 $\pm$ 0.1. The 1.5 R$_{\rm Jup}$ planet was confirmed by Doppler tomography of the stellar line profiles during transit. We place a limit of $<$ 8 M$_{\rm Jup}$ on its mass. The planet is in a retrograde orbit with a sky-projected spin-orbit angle of $\lambda = -165^{\circ} \pm 5^{\circ}$. This is in agreement with the known tendency for orbits around hotter stars to be more likely to be misaligned. WASP-167/KELT-13 is one of the few systems where the stellar rotation period is less than the planetary orbital period. We find evidence of non-radial stellar pulsations in the host star, making it a $\delta$-Scuti or $\gamma$-Dor variable. The similarity to WASP-33, a previously known hot-Jupiter host with pulsations, adds to the suggestion that close-in planets might be able to excite stellar pulsations., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Space-based photometric measurements first revealed low-amplitude irregularities in the pulsations of Cepheid stars, but their origins and how commonly they occur remain uncertain. To investigate this phenomenon, we present MOST space telescope photometry of two Cepheids. V473 Lyrae is a second-overtone, strongly modulated Cepheid, while U Trianguli Australis is a Cepheid pulsating simultaneously in the fundamental mode and first overtone. The nearly continuous, high-precision photometry reveals alternations in the amplitudes of cycles in V473 Lyr, the first case of period doubling detected in a classical Cepheid. In U TrA, we tentatively identify one peak as the $f_X$ or 0.61-type mode often seen in conjunction with the first radial overtone in Cepheids, but given the short length of the data, we cannot rule out that it is a combination peak instead. Ground-based photometry and spectroscopy were obtained to follow two modulation cycles in V473 Lyr and to better specify its physical parameters. The simultaneous data yield the phase lag parameter (the phase difference between maxima in luminosity and radial velocity) of a second-overtone Cepheid for the first time. We find no evidence for a period change in U TrA or an energy exchange between the fundamental mode and the first overtone during the last 50 years, contrary to earlier indications. Period doubling in V473 Lyr provides a strong argument that mode interactions do occur in some Cepheids and we may hypothesise that it could be behind the amplitude modulation, as recently proposed for Blazhko RR Lyrae stars., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We report new spectroscopic and photometric observations of the main-sequence, detached, eccentric, double-lined eclipsing binary V541 Cyg (P = 15.34 days, e = 0.468). Using these observations together with existing measurements we determine the component masses and radii to better than 1% precision: M1 = 2.335 +0.017/-0.013 MSun, M2 = 2.260 +0.016/-0.013 MSun, R1 = 1.859 +0.012/-0.009 RSun, and R2 = 1.808 +0.015/-0.013 RSun. The nearly identical B9.5 stars have estimated temperatures of 10650 +/- 200 K and 10350 +/- 200 K. A comparison of these properties with current stellar evolution models shows excellent agreement at an age of about 190 Myr and [Fe/H] approximately -0.18. Both components are found to be rotating at the pseudo-synchronous rate. The system displays a slow periastron advance that is dominated by General Relativity (GR), and has previously been claimed to be slower than predicted by theory. Our new measurement, dw/dt = 0.859 +0.042/-0.017 deg/century, has an 88% contribution from GR and agrees with the expected rate within the uncertainties. A large reverberation mapping study of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 has yielded emission-line lags for Hbeta 4861 and He II 4686 and a central black hole mass measurement of about 10 million solar masses, consistent with previous measurements. A very low level of variability during the monitoring campaign precluded meeting our original goal of recovering velocity-delay maps from the data, but with the new Hbeta measurement, NGC 7469 is no longer an outlier in the relationship between the size of the Hbeta-emitting broad-line region and the AGN luminosity. It was necessary to detrend the continuum and Hbeta and He II 4686 line light curves and those from archival UV data for different time-series analysis methods to yield consistent results., Comment: 9 Pages, 7 figures, 6 tables. We identify, categorize, and quantify alignment effects among host and satellite galaxies using a spectroscopically-confirmed, low-redshift (z<0.23) galaxy sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6. Consistent with other recent findings, we find that satellite galaxies (SGs) of red, centrally concentrated (elliptical) host galaxies (HGs) with radial velocity separation |Delta_V|<600 km/s preferentially reside near the projected major axes of their HGs. Among these, this preference is strongest for highly concentrated, red SGs. We find that fractional anisotropy increases with decreasing \Delta_V and Delta_R and is nearly 40% greater among the closest SGs (Delta_R<250 kpc/h) relative to more distant (Delta_R>500 kpc/h) SGs. For highly concentrated SGs at small (<300 kpc/h) projected separation, we observe a strong radial (hostward) alignment signal in isophotal position angles (PAs) due to isophotal twisting and contamination that is not present when using galaxy model PAs. Among objects for which both isophotal and galaxy model PAs agree to <15 degrees, this elongation signal is significantly weaker. We also investigate the "Holmberg Effect," a well-known result wherein nearby (<40 kpc/h) SGs of large, inclined spiral HGs were seen to preferentially reside near the minor axes of their HGs. Survey limitations preclude a strict test of this effect using only SDSS spectroscopic galaxies. By adopting a looser set of cuts than those of Holmberg's study, we recover a comparable preference among faint blue SGs for the HG minor axis at marginal significance (~3 sigma). We conclude that several types of alignment likely exist among different galaxy populations, but that the observed nature and strength of alignment trends depend sensitively on both selection criteria and on the method used to determine galaxy orientation., Comment: 58 pages, 25 figures, submitted to ApJ

We discuss the panchromatic properties of 99,088 galaxies selected from the SDSS Data Release 1 spectroscopic sample (a flux-limited sample for 1360 deg^2). These galaxies are positionally matched to sources detected by ROSAT, GALEX, 2MASS, IRAS, GB6, FIRST, NVSS and WENSS. We find strong correlations between the detection fraction at other wavelengths and optical properties such as flux, colors, and emission-line strengths. Using GALEX, SDSS, and 2MASS data, we construct the UV-IR broad-band spectral energy distributions for various types of galaxies, and find that they form a nearly one-parameter family. For example, based on SDSS u- and r-band data, supplemented with redshift, the K-band 2MASS magnitudes can be "predicted" with an rms scatter of only 0.2 mag. When a dust content estimate determined from SDSS data by Kauffmann et al. (2003) is also utilized, this scatter decreases to 0.1 mag. We demonstrate that this dust content is indeed higher for galaxies detected by IRAS and that it can be used to "predict" measured IRAS 60 micron flux density within a factor of two using only SDSS data. We also show that the position of a galaxy in the emission-line-based Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram is correlated with the optical light concentration index and u-r color determined from the SDSS broad-band imaging data, and discuss changes in the morphology of this diagram induced by requiring detections at other wavelengths. We positionally match the 6 cm GB6, 20 cm FIRST and NVSS, and 92 cm WENSS radio catalogs and find 16,500 matches in ~3,000 deg2 of sky. Using this unified radio database, we construct radio "color-magnitude-morphology" diagrams and find that they display a clear structure, rather than a random scatter. We propose a simple, yet powerful, method for morphological classification of radio sources based on FIRST and NVSS measurements. For a subset of matched sources, we find optical identifications using the SDSS Data Release 1 catalogs, and separate them into quasars and galaxies. Recent claims by Ivezic et al. (2002) that the distribution of the radio-to-optical flux ratio, R, for quasars is bimodal (the so-called quasar radio dichotomy) were questioned on statistical grounds by Cirasuolo et al. (2003). We apply the approach suggested by Cirasuolo et al. to a sample of \~10,000 objects detected by SDSS and FIRST, and find support for the quasar radio dichotomy. The discrepancy between the claims by Cirasuolo et al. and the results presented here is most likely because 1) the ~100 times larger sample based on two homogeneous surveys that is used here allows a direct determination of the R distribution, rather than relying on indirect inferences based on Monte Carlo simulations of several heterogeneous surveys 2) the accurate SDSS colors and redshift information allow robust determination of the K-correction for R, which, if unaccounted for, introduces significant scatter that masks the intrinsic properties of the quasar R distribution., Comment: to be published in the Proceedings of "AGN Physics with the SDSS"
