Abstract: The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The ANDES project is carried forward by a large international consortium, composed of 35 Institutes from 13 countries, forming a team of almost 300 scientists and engineers which include the majority of the scientific and technical expertise in the field that can be found in ESO member states., Comment: SPIE astronomical telescope and instrumentation 2024, in press

Abstract: This is the first in a collection of three papers introducing the science with an ultra-violet (UV) space telescope on an approximately 130~kg small satellite with a moderately fast re-pointing capability and a real-time alert communication system approved for a Czech national space mission. The mission, called Quick Ultra-Violet Kilonova surveyor - QUVIK, will provide key follow-up capabilities to increase the discovery potential of gravitational wave observatories and future wide-field multi-wavelength surveys. The primary objective of the mission is the measurement of the UV brightness evolution of kilonovae, resulting from mergers of neutron stars, to distinguish between different explosion scenarios. The mission, which is designed to be complementary to the Ultraviolet Transient Astronomy Satellite - ULTRASAT, will also provide unique follow-up capabilities for other transients both in the near- and far-UV bands. Between the observations of transients, the satellite will target other objects described in this collection of papers, which demonstrates that a small and relatively affordable dedicated UV-space telescope can be transformative for many fields of astrophysics., Comment: Accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews

Abstract: Two groundbreaking new facilities will commence operations early in the 2020s and thereafter define much of the broad landscape of US optical-infrared astronomy in the remaining decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), perched atop Cerro Pachon in the Chilean Andes, will revolutionize the young field of Time Domain Astronomy through its wide-field, multi-band optical imaging survey. At the same time, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), orbiting at the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, will provide stunningly high-resolution views of selected targets from the red end of the optical spectrum to the mid-infrared. However, the spatial resolution of the LSST observations will be limited by atmospheric seeing, while JWST will be limited in its time-domain capabilities. This paper highlights the scientific opportunities lying between these two landmark missions, i.e., science enabled by systems capable of astronomical observations with both high cadence in the time domain and high resolution in the spatial domain. The opportunities range from constraining the late phases of stellar evolution in nearby resolved populations to constraining dark matter distributions and cosmology using lensed transient sources. 8. The Type II Supernova Rate in z~0.1 Galaxy Clusters from the Multi-Epoch Nearby Cluster Survey

Abstract: We present 7 spectroscopically confirmed Type II cluster supernovae (SNeII) discovered in the Multi-Epoch Nearby Cluster Survey, a supernova survey targeting 57 low redshift 0.05 < z < 0.15 galaxy clusters with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We find the rate of Type II supernovae within the virial radius of these galaxy clusters to be 0.026 (+0.085 -0.018 stat; +0.003 -0.001 sys) SNe per century per 1e10 solar masses. Surprisingly, one SNII is in a red sequence host galaxy that shows no clear evidence of recent star formation. This is unambiguous evidence in support of ongoing, low-level star formation in at least some cluster elliptical galaxies, and illustrates that galaxies that appear to be quiescent cannot be assumed to host only Type Ia SNe. Based on this single SNII we make the first measurement of the SNII rate in red sequence galaxies, and find it to be 0.007 (+0.014 -0.007 stat; +0.009 -0.001 sys) SNe per century per 1e10 solar masses. We also make the first derivation of cluster specific star formation rates (sSFR) from cluster SNII rates. We find that for all galaxy types, sSFR is 5.1 (+15.8 -3.1 stat; +0.9 -0.9 sys) solar masses per year per 1e12 solar masses, and for red sequence galaxies only, it is 2.0 (+4.2 -0.9 stat; +0.4 -0.4 sys) solar masses per year per 1e12 solar masses. These values agree with SFRs measured from infrared and ultraviolet photometry, and H-alpha emission from optical spectroscopy. Additionally, we use the SFR derived from our SNII rate to show that although a small fraction of cluster Type Ia SNe may originate in the young stellar population and experience a short delay time, these results do not preclude the use of cluster SNIa rates to derive the late-time delay time distribution for SNeIa., Comment: 16 pages, 5 tables, 6 figures, 2 appendices; accepted to ApJ

Abstract: The Multi-Epoch Nearby Cluster Survey (MENeaCS) has discovered twenty-three cluster Type Ia supernovae (SNe) in the 58 X-ray selected galaxy clusters (0.05 < z < 0.15) surveyed. Four of our SN Ia events have no host galaxy on close inspection, and are likely intracluster SNe. Deep image stacks at the location of the candidate intracluster SNe put upper limits on the luminosities of faint hosts, with M_{r} > -13.0 mag and M_{g} > -12.5 mag in all cases. For such limits, the fraction of the cluster luminosity in faint dwarfs below our detection limit is <0.1%, assuming a standard cluster luminosity function. All four events occurred within ~600 kpc of the cluster center (projected), as defined by the position of the brightest cluster galaxy, and are more centrally concentrated than the cluster SN Ia population as a whole. After accounting for several observational biases that make intracluster SNe easier to discover and spectroscopically confirm, we calculate an intracluster stellar mass fraction of 0.16^{+0.13}_{-0.09} (68% CL) for all objects within R_{200}. If we assume that the intracluster stellar population is exclusively old, and the cluster galaxies themselves have a mix of stellar ages, we derive an upper limit on the intracluster stellar mass fraction of <0.47 (84% one-sided CL). When combined with the intragroup SNe results of McGee & Balogh, we confirm the declining intracluster stellar mass fraction as a function of halo mass reported by Gonzalez and collaborators. 12. A Cluster Based Replication Architecture for Load Balancing in Peer-to-Peer Content Distribution

Abstract: In P2P systems, large volumes of data are declustered naturally across a large number of peers. But it is very difficult to control the initial data distribution because every user has the freedom to share any data with other users. The system scalability can be improved by distributing the load across multiple servers which is proposed by replication. The large scale content distribution systems were improved broadly using the replication techniques. The demanded contents can be brought closer to the clients by multiplying the source of information geographically, which in turn reduce both the access latency and the network traffic. In addition to this, due to the intrinsic dynamism of the P2P environment, static data distribution cannot be expected to guarantee good load balancing. If the hot peers become bottleneck, it leads to increased user response time and significant performance degradation of the system. Hence an effective load balancing mechanism is necessary in such cases and it can be attained efficiently by intelligent data replication. In this paper, we propose a cluster based replication architecture for load-balancing in peer-to-peer content distribution systems. In addition to an intelligent replica placement technique, it also consists of an effective load balancing technique. In the intelligent replica placement technique, peers are grouped into strong and weak clusters based on their weight vector which comprises available capacity, CPU speed, access latency and memory size. In order to achieve complete load balancing across the system, an intracluster and inter-cluster load balancing algorithms are proposed. Abstract: We report the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z=1.62 located in the Spitzer Wide-Area Infrared Extragalactic survey XMM-LSS field. This structure was selected solely as an overdensity of galaxies with red Spitzer/IRAC colors, satisfying [3.6]-[4.5] > -0.1 AB mag. Photometric redshifts derived from Subaru XMM Deep Survey (BViz-bands), UKIRT Infrared Deep Survey-Ultra-Deep Survey (UKIDSS-UDS, JK-bands), and from the Spitzer Public UDS survey (3.6-8.0 micron) show that this cluster corresponds to a surface density of galaxies at z ~ 1.6 that is more than 20 sigma above the mean at this redshift. We obtained optical spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the cluster region using IMACS on the Magellan telescope. We measured redshifts for seven galaxies in the range z=1.62-1.63 within 2.8 arcmin (<1.4 Mpc) of the astrometric center of the cluster. A posteriori analysis of the XMM data in this field reveal a weak (4 sigma) detection in the [0.5-2 keV] band compatible with the expected thermal emission from such a cluster. The color-magnitude diagram of the galaxies in this cluster shows a prominent red-sequence, dominated by a population of red galaxies with (z-J) > 1.7 mag. The photometric redshift probability distributions for the red galaxies are strongly peaked at z=1.62, coincident with the spectroscopically confirmed galaxies. The rest-frame (U-B) color and scatter of galaxies on the red-sequence are consistent with a mean luminosity-weighted age of 1.2 +/- 0.1 Gyr, yielding a formation redshift z_f = 2.35 +/- 0.10, and corresponding to the last significant star-formation period in these galaxies., Comment: ApJ, in press, 11 pages, 7 figures (some in color). Depending on the position of the replicas, the effectiveness of replication tends to a large extent. A QoS based overlay network architecture involving an intelligent replica placement algorithm is proposed in this paper. Its main goal is to improve the network utilization and fault tolerance of the P2P system. In addition to the replica placement, it also has a caching technique, to reduce the search latency. We are able to show that our proposed architecture attains less latency and better throughput with reduced bandwidth usage, through the simulation results.

17. A photometric search for transients in galaxy clusters

Abstract: We have begun a program to search for supernovae and other transients in the fields of galaxy clusters with the 2.3m Bok Telescope on Kitt Peak. We present our automated photometric methods for data reduction, efficiency characterization, and initial spectroscopy. With this program, we aim to ultimately identify $\sim$25-35 cluster SN Ia ($\sim$10 of which will be intracluster, hostless events) and constrain the SN Ia rate associated with old, passive stellar populations. With these measurements we will constrain the relative contribution of hostless and hosted SN Ia to the metal enrichment of the intracluster medium. In the current work, we have identified a central excess of transient events within $1.25 r_{200}$ in our cluster fields after statistically subtracting out the 'background' transient rate taken from an off-cluster CCD chip. Based on the published rate of SN Ia for cluster populations we estimate that $\sim$20 percent of the excess cluster transients are due to cluster SN Ia, a comparable fraction to core collapse (CC) supernovae and the remaining are likely to be active galactic nuclei. Interestingly, we have identified three intracluster SN candidates, all of which lay beyond $R>r_{200}$. These events, if truly associated with the cluster, indicate a large deficit of intracluster (IC) SN at smaller radii, and may be associated with the IC stars of infalling groups or indicate that the intracluster light (ICL) in the cluster outskirts is actively forming stars which contribute CC SN or prompt SN Ia., Comment: Updated to match accepted version; 26 pages, 14 figures, AJ accepted

18. Clio: a 3-5 micron AO planet-finding camera

Abstract: Clio is an adaptive-optics camera mounted on the 6.5 meter MMT optimized for diffraction-limited L' and M-band imaging over a ~15'' field. The instrument was designed from the ground up with a large well-depth, fast readout thermal infrared (~3-5 micron) 320 by 256 pixel InSb detector, cooled optics, and associated focal plane and pupil masks (with the option for a coronograph) to minimize the thermal background and maximize throughput. When coupled with the MMT's adaptive secondary AO (two warm reflections) system's low thermal background, this instrument is in a unique position to image nearby warm planets, which are the brightest in the L' and M-band atmospheric windows. We present the current status of this recently commissioned instrument that performed exceptionally during first light. Our instrument sensitivities are impressive and are sky background limited: for an hour of integration, we obtain an L'-band 5 sigma detection limit of of 17.0 magnitudes (Strehl ~80%) and an M-band limit of 14.5 (Strehl ~90%). Our M-band sensitivity is lower due to the increase in thermal sky background. These sensitivities translate to finding relatively young planets five times Jupiter mass at 10 pc within a few AU of a star. Presently, a large Clio survey of nearby stellar systems is underway including a search for planets around solar-type stars, M dwarfs, and white dwarfs. Abstract: Neonatal cholestasis is a significant cause of chronic liver disease in infants. However, lack of awareness among parents and primary care physicians often leads to delayed diagnosis and management of these children. In this series, the authors discussed four cases of neonatal cholestasis (48 days term female, 3 months term male, 73 days old female, 33 days old term male) that presented in the outpatient department with the chief complaint of yellowish discolouration of the eyes and pale-coloured stools. Clinical and histochemical findings in all cases were suggestive of neonatal cholestasis. The neonates were treated with Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), vitamin ADEK, and followed up. Fortunately, in all the babies, symptoms resolved after management, except for a three-month-old male baby who unfortunately succumbed to liver failure after two weeks of hospitalisation. Early identification of Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis (PFIC) disorders is crucial as it enables effective management and potential definitive therapy. Additionally, prompt implementation of a galactose-free diet is critical for preventing acute toxicity and minimising tissue damage in galactosemia. Late presentation of biliary atresia can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it is crucial to include stool and urine charts in the discharge summary of every newborn and provide parental education on recognizing the signs of cholestasis in the Paediatric Outpatient department. To address this concern, we conducted a study aimed at identifying the common oral health conditions for children during the mixed dentition stage attending a tertiary care hospital in western Tamil Nadu, India. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the common oral health conditions among children of mixed dentition stage. Materials And Methods: This cross-sectional study was done among 246 children of mixed dentition stage attending Paediatric Outpatient Department (OPD) of KMCH IHSR, Coimbatore, Western Tamil Nadu, India, between June 2023 to July 2023. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data Results: When assessed for common oral health conditions 64.2% of the study population had Dental carries. 35.8% had periodontal disease. 9.3% had oral mucosal lesions. 15% had malocclusion, 9.3% had unerupted teeth and 6.1% had deleterious oral habits. Conclusion: The data presented in the current study highlights the prevalence of various dental conditions in the study population, emphasizing the need for comprehensive oral health care and preventive measures. Addressing these dental issues through regular dental check-ups, proper oral hygiene practices, and early intervention is essential in promoting optimal oral health and overall well-being for the children. Abstract: The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs (UBV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of similar to 100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 mu m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 mu m with the addition of a K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre-feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Its modularity will ensure that ANDES can be placed entirely on the ELT Nasmyth platform, if enough mass and volume is available, or partly in the Coude room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The ANDES project is carried forward by a large international consortium, composed of 35 Institutes from 13 countries, forming a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers which represent the majority of the scientific and technical expertise in the field among ESO member states.

R.; Zechmeister, M.; Zimara, J., The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs (UBV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of similar to 100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 mu m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 mu m with the addition of a K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre-feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Its modularity will ensure that ANDES can be placed entirely on the ELT Nasmyth platform, if enough mass and volume is available, or partly in the Coude room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The ANDES project is carried forward by a large international consortium, composed of 35 Institutes from 13 countries, forming a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers which represent the majority of the scientific and technical expertise in the field among ESO member states., The Italian effort for ANDES is supported by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). 32. Concomitant laparoscopic urological procedures: Does it contribute to morbidity?

Abstract: Aim: With advancement in minimal access surgery two laparoscopic procedures can be combined together shortening the total hospital stay, decreasing morbidity and overall reduced cost. Combining two laparoscopic procedures in a single session has been reported in general surgery. Very few articles are available in literature with regard to combined urological laparoscopic surgeries. This article retrospectively analyses the outcomes of multiple laparoscopic procedures performed in a single stage at our centre. Materials and Methods: Patients undergoing simultaneous procedures from May 2003 to Jan 2009 were included in the study. Patients were categorised into three groups according to the primary urological organ involved, for better comparison with the control group. Diseases involving the adrenals gland were grouped in (group 1), kidney (group 2) and renal collecting system/ureter (group 3). All patients had one urological procedure for either of the above-mentioned organs combined with another surgical procedure. Similarly three control groups were chosen according to the primary urological organ involved (group 1c- unilateral laparoscopic adrenalectomy, group 2c- unilateral laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and group 3c- unilateral laparoscopic ureterolithotomy) for comparative study. The operative details, hospital stay and complications were analysed. Results: Thirty-two patients underwent 64 laparoscopic procedures under single anaesthesia. The most common procedure in this series was laparoscopic adrenalectomy (n=34) followed by laparoscopic nephrectomy (n=13). Group 1 patients had a prolonged operative time ( P=0.012) and hospital stay ( P=0.025) when compared with group 1c. However, blood loss was comparable in both the groups. Patients in groups 2 and 3 had comparable operative times, blood loss and recovery period with respect to their controls. Intraoperatively, the end tidal carbon dioxide levels were within permissible limits. All procedures were completed using the laparoscopic approach, without any conversion. Conclusions: Simultaneous laparoscopic procedures can be done for urological diseases in selected patients with the advantages of single anaesthesia and hospital admission without increasing the morbidity.

Abstract: We present the first high-resolution map of the cold molecular gas distribution as traced by CO(2-1) emission with ALMA in a long ram pressure stripped tail. The Norma cluster galaxy ESO 137-001 is undergoing a strong interaction with the surrounding intracluster medium and is one of the nearest jellyfish galaxies with a long multiphase and multicomponent tail. We have mapped the full extent of the tail at 1″ (350 pc) angular resolution and found a rich distribution of mostly compact CO regions extending to nearly 60 kpc in length and 25 kpc in width. In total, about 109 M o&dot; of molecular gas was detected with ALMA. From comparison with previous APEX observations, we also infer the presence of a substantial extended molecular component in the tail. The ALMA CO features are found predominantly at the heads of numerous small-scale (∼1.5 kpc) fireballs (i.e., star-forming clouds with linear streams of young stars extending toward the galaxy) but also large-scale (∼8 kpc) superfireballs and double-sided fireballs that have additional diffuse ionized gas tails extending in the direction opposite the stellar tails. The new data help to shed light on the origin of the molecular tail; CO filaments oriented in the direction of the tail are likely young molecular features formed in situ, whereas large CO features tilted with respect to the tail may have originated from dense gas complexes that were gradually pushed away from the disk.

Abstract: In recent years, the use of data mining techniques has gained significance in healthcare applications. The appropriate data mining techniques extract interesting affinities/associations between patient's signs and symptoms, thus providing reasonable decision-making for the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease. Associative Classification (AC) is a contemporary technique, which uses the Class Association Rules (CARs) to build the classification system. Classification based on Predictive Association Rule (CPAR) is one of the popular AC algorithms, which utilise FOIL's Information Gain measure to select the best attributes for the generation of CARs. This work attempts to explore a suitable attribute selection measure and an error estimate measure that can best fit into the existing CPAR algorithm to construct an efficient rule-based classifier. Thus the performance of CPAR has been analyzed by applying alternative attribute selection measures such as Gain Ratio (GR) and Mutual Information Gain (IG) instead of FOIL's Information Gain. Moreover, two error estimate measures such as Laplace accuracy ("La") and Likelihood ratio statistic ("Lr") are used for rule evaluation and best k-rule selection tasks of CPAR. This work analyzes the performance of CPAR-GR and CPAR-IG with the existing CPAR algorithm in terms of classifier accuracy. From the results, it was found that the use of "GR" and "IG" within CPAR yields accuracy higher than the existing CPAR. Significant differences in the performances of CPAR, CPAR-GR, and CPAR-IG are identified and demonstrated by experiments, and statistical tests using healthcare datasets taken from the UCI machine learning repository.
