Abstract

The separation number (TZ) and the height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP, h) are studied in a system of two columns (GLC-GSC) coupled in series under temperature-programmed and isobaric conditions using a mixture of the first six homologous n-alkanes. The effects of four selectivity parameters (initial temperature, hold time, program rate, and midpoint pressure) on them have shown that TZ is strongly dependent on the midpoint pressure and h on the temperature. TZ and h are related inversely with a relationship that involves the overall column length (Lf + Lb) of the system. Examination of the basic relationship between separation number and the average carbon number showed that it is linear for this system only in the case which is linear for the back column, and this depends on the midpoint pressure.

Abstract

In recent decades the air quality in Athens city has been extremely poor. Scientific interest has focused on health effects caused by indoor air pollution, due to the fact that most people in the developed world spend most of their time indoors, especially in office settings. Carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds and benzene are important pollutants that can affect indoor air quality. Measurements conducted inside the Control Tower of Athens International Airport have shown that despite the fact that concentrations never exceeded the established limits for indoor environments, all pollutant concentrations determined were significantly higher than those outdoors. This indicates contributions from indoor sources such as smoking, carpets, furniture and human emanations including breathing and body odour. Benzene levels found in the employees’ exposure experiments were particularly noticeable and proved that smoking was a major indoor pollution source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Concentrations of Pb, Cd, As and Ni in PM2.5 particles were measured in samples collected, using low volume PM2.5 samplers (Harvard Impactor system, HI) at two sites in Athens basin; Patission Street in Athens city center and Rentis, a semi-urban and industrial area, during March 1995–March 1996. Sample analysis for Pb, Cd, Ni and As was accomplished by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry after total digestion. Annual geometric mean values in 183 PM2.5 particles samples were found to be: Pb: 143 ng m−3; Cd: 0.34 ng m−3; Ni: 4.55 ng m−3; As: 0.79 ng m−3. The geographical and temporal distribution patterns were investigated. Pb exhibited higher values during the winter period. For the other elements no significant seasonal variation was observed. Wind direction, air temperature and relative humidity affected element concentrations. Principal component analysis was applied on the data to enable source apportionment of toxic elements in PM2.5 particles. It was found that Pb, As and Ni have common sources, which could be vehicles emissions/oil combustion and resuspended road dust. Cd and a portion of As originate from industrial activities.
