The evolution of a particular sensory organ is often discussed with no consideration of the roles played by other senses. Here, we treat mammalian vision, olfaction and hearing as an interconnected whole, a three-dimensional sensory space, evolving in response to ecological challenges. Until now, there has been no quantitative method for estimating how much a particular animal invests in its different senses. We propose an anatomical measure based on sensory organ sizes. Dimensions of functional importance are defined and measured, and normalized in relation to animal mass. For 119 taxonomically and ecologically diverse species, we can define the position of the species in a three-dimensional sensory space. Thus, we can ask questions related to possible trade-off vs. co-operation among senses. More generally, our method allows morphologists to identify sensory organ combinations that are characteristic of particular ecological niches. After normalization for animal size, we note that arboreal mammals tend to have larger eyes and smaller noses than terrestrial mammals. On the other hand, we observe a strong correlation between eyes and ears, indicating that co-operation between vision and hearing is a general mammalian feature. For some groups of mammals we note a correlation, and possible co-operation between olfaction and whiskers.

The whale ear, initially designed for hearing in air, became adapted for hearing underwater in less than ten million years of evolution. This study describes the evolution of underwater hearing in cetaceans, focusing on changes in sound transmission mechanisms. Measurements were made on 60 fossils of whole or partial skulls, isolated tympanics, middle ear ossicles, and mandibles from all six archaeocete families. Fossil data were compared with data on two families of modern mysticete whales and nine families of modern odontocete cetaceans, as well as five families of noncetacean mammals. Results show that the outer ear pinna and external auditory meatus were functionally replaced by the mandible and the mandibular fat pad, which posteriorly contacts the tympanic plate, the lateral wall of the bulla. Changes in the ear include thickening of the tympanic bulla medially, isolation of the tympanoperiotic complex by means of air sinuses, functional replacement of the tympanic membrane by a bony plate, and changes in ossicle shapes and orientation. Pakicetids, the earliest archaeocetes, had a land mammal ear for hearing in air, and used bone conduction underwater, aided by the heavy tympanic bulla. Remingtonocetids and protocetids were the first to display a genuine underwater ear where sound reached the inner ear through the mandibular fat pad, the tympanic plate, and the middle ear ossicles. Basilosaurids and dorudontids showed further aquatic adaptations of the ossicular chain and the acoustic isolation of the ear complex from the skull. The land mammal ear and the generalized modern whale ear are evolutionarily stable configurations, two ends of a process where the cetacean mandible might have been a keystone character.

The skulls and isolated tympanics are described for the earliest whales, pakicetids, from the H-GSP Locality 62 in the Ganda Kas area in Northern Pakistan. Currently three pakicetid genera are known: Pakicetus, Ichthyolestes, and Nalacetus. Ichthyolestes is smaller than the two other genera. Nalacetus and Pakicetus are similar in size, but morphologically different. Pakicetids have a nasal opening at the tip of the rostrum. Their palate retains an incisive foramen. This study reveals three characters of the cranial anatomy useful for systematic analyses. In pakicetids the orbits are orientated dorsally, and there is no supraorbital shield. The dorsal orientation of the orbits is diagnostic for the family, and the lack of supraorbital shield distinguishes pakicetids, ambulocetids, and remingtonocetids from the other Eocene archaeocetes. The marsupial middle ear performs an anatomical impedance matching for acoustic energy travelling in air to reach the cochlea. The size of the middle ear sets constraints for the frequencies transmitted. For generalized placental mammals, it has been shown that the limit for high-frequency hearing can be predicted on the basis of middle ear ossicle mass, provided that the ears fulfil requirements of isometry. We studied the interspecific size variation of the middle ear in 23 marsupial species, with the following measurable parameters: skull mass, condylobasal length, ossicular masses for malleus, incus and stapes, tympanic membrane area, oval window area, and lever arm lengths for malleus and incus. Our results show that the middle ear size grows with negative allometry in relation to body size and that the internal proportions of the marsupial middle ear are largely isometric. This resembles the situation in placental mammals and allows us to use their isometric middle ear model to predict the high-frequency hearing limit for marsupials. We found that the isometry model predicts the high-frequency hearing limit for different marsupials well, indicating that marsupials can be used as auditory models for general therian mammalian hearing. At very high frequencies, other factors, such as the inner ear, seem to constrain mammalian hearing.

Ear ossicles were extracted from the skull of 64 specimens representing 31 marsupial species; all major extant marsupial clades were sampled except for Notoryctes. Images of ossicles were obtained using a scanning electron microscope and exported digitally to a graphic computer software. Thirteen characters and 31 character states were defined and coded to encompass the observed morphological variation. A composite phylogeny summarizing published molecular and morphological data was used to map the characters, revealing homoplasy in all three ossicles. The majority of transformations recorded occur between species, genera, or subfamilies, while few of them characterize higher-level taxa. The two alternative phylogenies of phalangeriforms being monophyletic or paraphyletic receive equal support from ossicle characters.

In odontocetes the mandibular bone serves two functions: to capture prey, and as a means of the reception and transmission of sound waves through a fat body in the mandibular canal, which opens posteriorly as the mandibular foramen. The posterior part of the lateral wall of the odontocete mandible is thin, and appears to represent a compromise between a strong mandible for prey capture and a thin vibrating plate for hearing. We studied the intraspecific variation of minimum thickness of the lateral mandibular wall along four transects (T1-T4) at the area of the mandibular foramen, in relation to the skull size and the mandibular size in different-aged bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus (18 females between 1 and 42 yr, 17 males between 1 and 32 yr). The minimum thickness was absolutely at its lowest at the most posterior transect T1, but did not vary significantly between the sexes or between the ages. The minimum thickness varied significantly at the two most anterior transects, T3 and T4, both between the sexes and among the ages. The thickness increased throughout life among males, whereas in females it first increased and then starts to decrease around the age of 20.

This study is based on the examination of histological sections of specimens of different ages and of adult ossicles from macerated skulls representing a wide range of taxa and aims at addressing several issues concerning the evolution of the ear ossicles in marsupials. Three-dimensional reconstructions of the ear ossicles based on histological series were done for one or more stages of Monodelphis domestica, Caluromys philander, Sminthopsis virginiae, Trichosurus vulpecula, and Macropus rufogriseus. Several common trends were found. Portions of the ossicles that are phylogenetically older develop earlier than portions representing more recent evolutionary inventions (manubrium of the malleus, crus longum of the incus). The onset of endochondral ossification in the taxa in which this was examined followed the sequence; first malleus, then incus, and finally stapes. In M. domestica and C. philander at birth the yet precartilaginous ossicles form a supportive strut between the lower jaw and the braincase. The cartilage of Paauw develops relatively late in comparison with the ear ossicles and in close association to the tendon of the stapedial muscle. A feeble artery traverses the stapedial foramen of the stapes in the youngest stages of M. domestica, C. philander, and Sminthopsis virginiae examined. Presence of a large stapedial foramen is reconstructed in the groundplan of the Didelphidae and of Marsupialia. The stapedial foramen is absent in all adult caenolestids, dasyurids, Myrmecobius, Notoryctes, peramelids, vombatids, and phascolarctids. Pouch young of Perameles sp. and Dasyurus viverrinus show a bicrurate stapes with a sizeable stapedial foramen. Some didelphids examined to date show a double insertion of the Tensor tympani muscle. Some differences exist between M. domestica and C. philander in adult ossicle form, including the relative length of the incudal crus breve and of the stapes. Several differences exist between the malleus of didelphids and that of some phalangeriforms, the latter showing a short neck, absence of the lamina, and a ventrally directed manubrium. Hearing starts in M. domestica at an age in which the external auditory meatus has not yet fully developed, the ossicles are not fully ossified, and the middle ear space is partially filled with loose mesenchyme. The ontogenetic changes in hearing abilities in M. domestica between postnatal days 30 and 40 may be at least partially related to changes in middle ear structures.

Functionally interesting dimensions of the tympano-periotic complex were measured and compared in 18 odontocete and six mysticete species, ranging from small porpoises to the blue whale. We determined (i) the masses of the tympanic and periotic bones (T and P) and of the ossicles malleus, incus, and stapes (M, I and S), (ii) the volume occupied bythe tympanic bone (V), (iii) the areas of the tympanic plate and oval window (A1 and A2), (iv) the thickness of the tympanic plate (D), and (v) the densities of the ossicles (dM, dI, and dS). In most cases, roughly isometric scaling was found in both toothed and baleen whales. P is isometric to T, and the tympanic bone is structurally isometric in all species studied, although not within mysticetes as a group, shown by the isometric relations of V to T, of T(2/3) to A1, and of D to square root(A1). The essentially isometric scaling of the tympanic bone provides a basis for the functional models described by Hemilä et al. (1999). The relation of S to M+I is also isometric, but the relation of M+I+S to T is negatively allometric, as is the relation of A2 to A1, both with slopes close to 2/3. The possible functional implication of this allometry is unknown. The mean ossicular density is 2.64 g/cm3 for odontocetes, and 2.35 g/cm3 for mysticetes. The highly mineralized and convex tympanic plate provides cetaceans with a uniquely large and stiff sound collecting area.

The high acoustic sensitivity of the bottlenose dolphin is physically defined and related to the anatomy of the middle ear. The paper presents a conceptual and parametric analysis of the demands imposed by this high sensitivity upon the middle ear mechanisms: the head and the middle ear structures must collect sound energy from a large area and concentrate it onto the oval window. Assuming that the specific input impedance of the mammalian cochlea is relatively constant, and smaller than the characteristic acoustic impedance of water, we find that the impedance matching task of the cetacean middle ear is very different from that of terrestrial mammals: instead of a large pressure amplification, cetaceans need amplification of particle velocity. Our mechanical four-bone model of the odontocete middle ear is based on the anatomy of the tympano-periotic complex and consists of four rigid bone units (tympanic bone, the malleus-incus complex, stapes, periotic bone) connected through elastic junctions. The velocity amplification is brought about by lever mechanisms and elastic couplings. The model produced velocity amplifications ranging from 7- to 23-fold when provided with middle ear parameters from the six odontocete species for which audiograms are available. The model reproduces the complete audiograms of these six species fairly well for frequencies up to about 100-120 kHz.

We describe the bony and cartilaginous structures of five fetal skulls of Stenella attenuata (pantropical spotted dolphin) specimens. The specimens represent early fetal life as suggested by the presence of rostral tactile hairs and the beginnings of skin pigmentation. These specimens exhibit the developmental order of ossification of the intramembranous and endochondral elements of the cranium as well as the functional and morphological development of specific cetacean anatomical adaptations. Detailed observations are presented on telescoping, nasal anatomy, and middle ear anatomy. The development of the middle ear ossicles, ectotympanic bone, and median nasal cartilage is of interest because in the adult these structures are morphologically different from those in land mammals. We follow specific cetacean morphological characteristics through fetal development to provide insight into the form and function of the cetacean body plan. Combining these data with fossil evidence, it is possible to overlie ontogenetic patterns and discern evolutionary patterns of the cetacean skull. Anat Rec, 294:1743–1756, 2011. During the past 50 years, the high acoustic sensitivity and the echolocation behavior of dolphins and other small odontocetes have been studied thoroughly. However, understanding has been scarce as to how the dolphin cochlea is stimulated by high frequency echoes, and likewise regarding the ear mechanics affecting dolphin audiograms. The characteristic impedance of mammalian soft tissues is similar to that of water, and thus no radical refractions of sound, nor reflections of sound, can be expected at the water/soft tissue interfaces. Consequently, a sound-collecting terrestrial pinna and an outer ear canal serve little purpose in underwater hearing. Additionally, compared to terrestrial mammals whose middle ear performs an impedance match from air to the cochlea, the impedance match performed by the odontocete middle ear needs to be reversed to perform an opposite match from water to the cochlea. In this paper, we discuss anatomical adaptations of dolphins: a lower jaw collecting sound, thus replacing the terrestrial outer ear pinna, and a thin and large tympanic bone plate replacing the tympanic membrane of terrestrial mammals. The paper describes the lower jaw anatomy and hypothetical middle ear mechanisms explaining both the high sensitivity and the converted acoustic impedance match.
