Background: Nasal and paranasal sinus masses can arise from a wide range of conditions, both benign and malignant, as well as congenital or acquired. Diagnosing these masses is often challenging, requiring a combination of nasal endoscopy, imaging studies, and histopathological analysis. Initial imaging frequently involves computed tomography or cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to evaluate the bony anatomy of the nasal cavity and surrounding sinuses, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is typically used for detailed assessment of soft tissues and to aid in differential diagnosis when the findings are inconclusive. Methods: This review examines nasal masses evaluated using CT, CBCT, and MRI, highlighting key imaging features that may assist in differential diagnosis. Results: For non-neoplastic lesions, examples include conditions such as rhinoliths, inverted mesiodens, and septal mucoceles. Benign and borderline tumors discussed encompass lobular capillary hemangioma, inverted papilloma, septal osteoma, chondromesenchymal hamartoma, hemangioma, hemangiopericytoma, antrochoanal polyp, sinonasal angiofibroma, ossifying fibroma, and lipoma. Malignant tumors addressed in this review include adenocarcinoma, esthesioneuroblastoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, melanoma, and sarcoma. Conclusions: Diagnosing nasal lesions represent a significant challenge for otolaryngologists. Imaging characteristics of nasal masses play a crucial role in narrowing down differential diagnoses before surgery. Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep disorder characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. While the systemic implications of OSA are well documented, the dental consequences are less frequently discussed yet equally significant. This review aims to elucidate the oral health impacts of OSA, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary care. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across several databases to identify studies examining the relationship between OSA and various oral health parameters. The review included observational studies, clinical trials, and systematic reviews published in English up to January 2024. Results: OSA was significantly associated with heightened risks of bruxism, dry mouth, periodontal disease, temporomandibular joint disorders, palatal and dental changes, and alterations in taste sensation. Mouth breathing associated with OSA was a critical factor in exacerbating xerostomia and dental caries. Furthermore, the systemic inflammation induced by OSA appeared to correlate with the severity of periodontal disease. Patients using oral appliance therapy for OSA also showed notable changes in dental occlusion and required ongoing dental monitoring. Conclusions: The findings underscore the bidirectional relationship between OSA and oral health, highlighting the need for dental professionals to be integral participants in the management of OSA. Early dental evaluation and intervention can contribute to the overall health and quality of life of individuals with OSA. The review advocates for the development of clinical guidelines to facilitate the early identification and management of OSA-related oral health issues within dental practice and encourages a collaborative approach to patient care. Background: this prospective study investigated the correlation between the oral bacterial microflora and the microflora found in voice prostheses (VPs) among 20 patients who had undergone laryngectomy. The aim was to explore the associations between the microflora's presence and the malfunction of VPs, along with the association between the predominant microorganism and the longevity of VPs. Methods: the research process included gathering medical histories, conducting ENT examinations, replacing VPs, and performing check-ups every four months for a period of 15.5 months. Additionally, microbiological examinations, blood tests, and voice change surveys were conducted. Results: a correlation between the microflora isolated from VPs and that from oral rinses was demonstrated in a large percentage of patients who experienced a loss of prosthetic functional efficiency. The correlation analysis between the type of microorganism and the lifespan of VPs showed a non-significant Pearson correlation coefficient (r = 0.043, p = 0.678). Introduction: Since the introduction of Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART), there has been a significant increase in the survival of HIV-infected patients. Consequently, there has been increased attention on the potential neoplastic pathologies, such as Kaposi’s sarcoma, associated with AIDS in these individuals. Case Report: In this case report we present, for the first time, a patient affected by Kaposi's sarcoma of the palatine tonsil with a concomitant syphilis infection. The patient underwent enlarged tonsillectomy and continued antiretroviral therapy. There were no signs of disease recurrence at a 12-month follow-up. Conclusions: Despite the rarity of tonsillar localization of Kaposi's sarcoma, it should be suspected in the presence of an HIV-infected patient. Tonsillectomy effectively controls local disease, but comprehensive patient management requires a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including infectious disease specialists, pathologists, and oncologists who work together to provide high-quality and coordinated care. Introduction: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that usually arises from the pleura but can also occur in extrapleural sites, such as the sinonasal region. It causes aspecific symptoms, including nasal obstruction and discharge, postnasal drip, anosmia, epistaxis, and headache. It may be difficult to distinguish these symptoms from those caused by other mesenchymal lesions that usually occur in this site, especially when the tissues undergo iatrogenic damage following surgical removal. Case Report: This case report shows a rare right nasal septal solitary fibrous tumor, which was surgically removed using a trans-nasal endoscopic technique. For the first time, the mass was decomposed by a plasma blade, and the implant site was treated by performing a subperiosteal removal of septal mucosa and cartilage. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of solitary fibrous tumor. Follow-up at three, six, and twelve months showed no signs of relapse. Conclusions: Sinonasal SFT is unusual, and it may be difficult to distinguish it from other mesenchymal lesions in this site. In the literature, cases treated with CO2 laser are usually described; however, due to the high cutting temperatures, this can cause thermal damage of the tissues, making histopathological diagnosis difficult. The plasma blade uses pulsed radiofrequency, creating an effective cutting edge while the blade stays near body temperature. Therefore, this device results in atraumatic, scalpel-like cutting sensitivity and electrosurgical-like hemostasis, with minimal bleeding and tissue injury. Its use could, therefore, help both the surgeon in obtaining surgical radicality and the pathologist in the correct histologic classification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pneumolabyrinth is a condition characterised by the presence of air within the inner ear and is a rare complication after cochlear implant surgery. One of the causes of pneumolabyrinth may be the increase in pressure in the middle ear. The use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is an effective treatment strategy for obstructive sleep apnoea. According to a recent study, the use of CPAP should be delayed by 1 or 2 weeks in subjects undergoing middle ear surgery; however, there is currently no indication to delay the CPAP in subjects undergoing cochlear implant surgery. We report the case of a patient on CPAP who underwent left cochlear implantation and, in the early postoperative period, reported severe vertigo and tinnitus. Cone-beam CT of the temporal bone revealed the presence of pneumolabyrynth. We believe that the use of CPAP should be delayed in subjects undergoing cochlear implantation to avoid the development of acute pneumolabyrinth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is defined as the sensorineural hearing loss caused by acute acoustic trauma or chronic exposure to high-intensity noises. Exposure to noises can lead to irreversible damage to the inner ear and, consequently, to a permanent shift of the hearing threshold. Police officers are particularly at risk of acute or chronic hearing damages. The aim of this study is to evaluate the hearing loss of police officers in relation to the occupational risk factors and clinical-anamnestic characteristics by collecting and analyzing existing data and evidence available in public databases. Materials and Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses group (PRISMA). Studies were included if they met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were conducted independently by two researchers. Results: Our initial literature search yielded 29 peer-reviewed articles. Out of 29 papers, only 10 were included in the review, after inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied the. Conclusions: Hypertension, smoking and alcohol intake significantly affect hearing performance. In addition, a history of acoustic trauma, use of ototoxic drugs, exposure to noise in leisure-time activities and failure to use ear protectors are often found in a fair number of subjects. NIHL is also related to the age of the subjects as well as the extent and duration of noise exposure. Furthermore, NIHL is also influenced by shooting practice sessions police officers are required to undertake as well as by the chronic exposure to traffic noise, especially in motorcycle police officers. A prospective observational study was conducted to evaluate the presence of swallowing, speech and orofacial muscle imbalance (OMI) disorders in patients with adenotonsillar hypertrophy and their regression after surgery. ENT, speech therapist and dentistry examination were conducted before and 12 months after surgery in 78 children between the ages of 2 and 12 with dysphagia, speech disorders and OMI adenotonsillar hypertrophy related with sleep-disordered breathing. Of the 78 patients enrolled, 62 underwent adenotonsillectomy, 9 adenoidectomy and 7 volume reduction of the palatine tonsils with a 12-month post-operative increase in SWAL-QOL score, weight gain, correction of ogival palate, dental crowding and tongue posture and consequent resolution of phono-articulatory disorders. Introduction: The aim of this study is to analyse different surgery (radio frequency and cold instrumentation) of oral benign papillomatous lesions. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was carried out in our section of Otorhinolaryngology from 2014 to 2018. 112 patients with oral benign papillomatous lesions were enrolled and divided into 2 groups. Group A of 62 patients treated with excision of lesions using radio frequency using a bipolar coagulation electrode (CelonLabENT). Group B of 50 patients treated with excision of the lesion using traditional cold instruments (scalpel and surgical forceps). All patients were evaluated for intraoperative bleeding, discomfort and recurrence rate. Results: 112 patients (of which 37 males and 75 females) with mean age 32.9 ranged from 10 to 61 years. The HPV types associated with oral benign papillomatous lesions were HPV 6 (17%), 11 (23,3%), 13 (10,7%), 32 (34%), 2 (10%) and 57 (5%). There are no statistically significant differents among patients operated with radio frequency (Group A) and cold instrumentation (Group B) regarding intraoperative bleeding (P= 0.08), recurrence rate after 1 year from surgery (P=1), intraoperative discomfort (P=0.7) and postoperative discomfort (P=0.6). Conclusion: Radiofrequencies and surgery with scalpel and surgical forceps are equal valid methods for the treatment of benign papillomatous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The incidence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) in the pediatric population is about 2%. The diagnosis is based on the employment of questionnaires, and polysomnography (PSG) that is the gold standard also among children. The PSG allows to classify OSAS as mild in case of 1< Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) =5, moderate if 5< AHI =10 and severe OSAS when the AHI is >10. If polysomnography is not available, we need alternative diagnostic tests such as nocturnal oximetry studies and respiratory polygraphy. The risk factors identified are different from adults, first tonsillar hypertrophy wins over others. The symptoms and signs described are similar to adult population, but sleep enuresis, neurocognitive impairment and behavioral problems (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, learning problems) are typical of pediatric OSAS. Introduction The current Italian law does not include any guidance regarding voice education, prevention of voice disorders and screening in subjects with high vocal loading such as teachers. Objectives We aimed to check the correlation between the Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTDS) with the Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS) for the evaluation of Italian teachers. In addition, we aimed to investigate whether there are differences in the frequency and intensity of discomfort symptoms in teachers with disabilities comparing vocal tract discomfort symptoms in teachers with high risk (HRVD) and low risk (LRVD) of vocal disorders according to the VoiSS cutoff (> 15.5). Methods We analyzed 160 Italian teachers (111 women and 49 men) that completed the VTDS and VoiSS at vocal evaluation. The Spearman correlation test was applied to all variables. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the average number of discomfort symptoms among HRVD and LRVD teachers. Results A moderate positive correlation was observed between the average number, frequency, and intensity of discomfort symptom and the total score, physical domain score, and limitation domain score of the VoiSS. Only the emotional domain score of the VoiSS showed a weak positive correlation (p<0.001). Teachers considered in the HRVD group according to the VoiSS score had a higher number, frequency, and intensity of vocal tract discomfort symptoms. Conclusion There is correlation between the VTDS and VoiSS scales. Like the VoiSS, the VTDS is a questionnaire that detects HRVD teachers. Therefore, the results suggest that both questionnaires could be useful for a preventive voice program for Italian teachers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
