26. PLLA-PHB fiber membranes obtained by solvent-free electrospinning for short-time drug delivery.

Abstract

Fibers of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA)/polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) with different concentrations of the drug dipyridamole (DPD) were prepared using solvent-free melt electrospinning to obtain a polymeric drug delivery system. The electrospun fibers were morphologically, structurally, thermally, and dynamically characterized. Crazes that resemble lotus root crevices were interestingly observed in the 7:3 PLLA/PHB fibers with 1% DPD. The crystallinity of PLLA slightly decreased as PHB was incorporated, and the addition of DPD significantly reduced the melting temperature of the composite. The interactions between PLLA and PHB mainly occurred at a proportion of 7:3, and drug encapsulation in the fibers was verified. The kinetic profiles of drug release demonstrated the predominant multiple patterns involving a diffusional stage in the short-term mode of release and kinetic process related to the hydrolysis of the biopolymers. Furthermore, the dynamic behavior of the polymer molecules was evaluated based on the segmental mobility using probe electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The segmental mobility in the amorphous fraction of PLLA decreased with increasing PLLA content. The 9:1 PLLA/PHB system was more resistant to polymer hydrolysis than to the 7:3 system and the rate of diffusion transport was approximately two times higher for the 7:3 PLLA/PHB fibers than for the 9:1 PLLA/PHB fibers. Abstract

Randomly branched poly(butylene isophthalate) samples containing sodium sulfonate groups were prepared from dimethyl isophthalate, 3,5‐bis(carbomethoxycarbonyl) benzene sulfonate, tris(hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate, and 1,4‐butanediol, according to the well‐known two‐stage polycondensation procedure. The polymers, containing various amounts of branching units and ionic groups, demonstrated to be soluble in the most common organic solvents, an evidence that gelation was not reached under the polymerization conditions adopted. The thermal behavior was examined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The sulfonate as well as the branching units had only a limited effect on the thermal stability, which slightly decreased with respect to pure poly(butylene isophthalate). The analysis carried out using DSC technique showed that the Tm of the copolymers decreased with increasing counit content, differently from Tg, which, on the contrary, increased. Abstract

Poly(ethylene isophthalate-co-ethylene terephthalate) (PEIPET) copolymers of various compositions and molecular weights were synthesized by melt polycondensation and characterized in terms of chemical structure and thermal and rheological properties. At room temperature, all copolymers were amorphous and thermally stable up to about 400°C. The main effect of copolymerization was a monotonic increase of glass transition temperature (Tg) as the content of ethylene terephthalate units increased. The Fox equation accurately describes the Tg–composition data. The presence of ethylene terephthalate units was found to influence rheological behavior in the melt, with the Newtonian viscosity increasing as the content of ethylene terephthalate units increased. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare some physico-chemical properties (weight loss, pH, Haugh unit, gel hardenss and foam drainage) of non packed eggs and eggs packed in high barrier plastic pouches with three atmospheres (air, 100% N-2, 100% CO2) during 28 days of storage at 25 degrees C. MAP permitted a strong reduction of the weight loss from the product. While the greatest quality decline was observed for the control, eggs packed in CO2 maintained the initial values of Haugh unit during storage and the albumen pH was about 2 points lower than the control. Gel hardness showed a strict correlation with raw albumen pH and CO2 MAP caused the formation of a soft and puffy coagulum. In terms of liquid drainage, foam stability decreased during storage for all samples but eggs packed in 100% CO2 showed a more stable foam compared with fresh eggs until the fourth day. These findings suggest that the exposition of fresh eggs to CO2 enriched atmospheres could be apply as a natural method to modulate albumen pH and indirectly the rheological properties of coagulated albumen and foam.
