The International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-IODE) released a quality management framework for its National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) network in 2013. This document is intended, amongst other goals, to provide a means of assistance for NODCs to establish organisational data management quality management systems. The IOC-IODE’s framework also promotes the accreditation of NODCs which have implemented a Data Management Quality Management Framework adhering to the guidelines laid out in the IOC-IODE’s framework. In its submission for IOCE-IODE accreditation, Ireland’s National Marine Data Centre (hosted by the Marine Institute) included a Data Management Quality Management model; a manual detailing this model and how it is implemented across the scientific and environmental data producing areas of the Marine Institute; and, at a more practical level, an implementation pack consisting of a number of templates to assist in the compilation of the documentation required by the model and the manual.

Scales and otoliths (ear stones) from fish are routinely sampled for age estimation and stock management purposes. Growth records from scales and otoliths can be used to generate long-term time series data, and in combination with environmental data, can reveal species specific population responses to a changing climate. Additionally, scale and otolith microchemical data can be utilized to investigate fish habitat usage and migration patters. A common problem associated with biological collections, is that while sample intake grows, long-term digital and physical storage is rarely a priority. Material is often collected to meet short-term objectives and resources are seldom committed to maintaining and archiving collections. As a consequence, precious samples are frequently stored in many different and unsuitable locations, and may become lost or separated from associated metadata. The Marine Institute’s ecological research station in Newport, Ireland, holds a multi-decadal (1928-2020) collection of scales and otoliths from various fish species, gathered from many geographic locations. Here we present an open-source database and archiving system to consolidate and digitize this collection, and show how this case study infrastructure could be used for other biological sample collections. The system utilizes the FAIR (Findable Accessible Interoperable and Reusable) open data principals, and includes a physical repository, sample metadata catalogue, and image library.

Peer-reviewed., Diarrhetic shellfish toxin-producing Dinophysis species occur in Irish coastal waters throughout the year. Dinophysis acuta and Dinophysis acuminata are the most commonly occurring species and are responsible for the majority of closures of Irish mussel farms. This study describes the development of a qualitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for identification of D. acuta and D. acuminata in Irish coastal waters. DNA sequence information for the D1-D2 region of the large ribosomal sub-unit (LSU) was obtained, following single-cell PCR of D. acuta and D. acuminata cells isolated from Irish coastal locations. PCR primers and hybridization probes, specific for the detection of D. acuta, were designed for real-time PCR on the LightCycler™. The LightCycler™ software melt curve analysis programme determined that D. acuta was identified by a melt-peak at 61°C, while D. acuminata cells produced a melt peak at 48°C. The limit of detection of the real-time PCR assay was determined to be one to ten plasmid copies of the LSU D1-D2 target region for both species and one to five D. acuminata cells. Lugol's preserved water samples were also tested with the assay. The real-time PCR assay identified Dinophysis species in 100% of samples found to contain Dinophysis species by light microscopy and had a greater than 90% correlation with light microscopy for identification of D. acuta and D. acuminata in the samples. The assay can identify and discriminate D. acuta and D. acuminata at low numbers in Irish waters and has the potential to add value to the Irish phytoplankton monitoring programme., The study was carried out as part of the PHYTOTEST project, funded by the National Development Plan (NDP) Marine Institute Strategic Research Program-Advanced Technologies (Project No: AT04/02/02).

The specific role of ethnicity in the experience of bullying was examined, with a sample of 33 pairs of Asian and white children, matched for gender, age, and school. Each child was interviewed individually, using a modified version of the Olweus questionnaire. No differences by ethnicity were found for reports of enjoying school; having friends at school; disliking other children; likelihood and frequency of being bullied; and likelihood and frequency of bullying others. For those children being bullied, no differences by ethnicity were found for where it happened, or the likelihood of getting help. However, significant difference by ethnicity was found for racist name-calling; one-half of the bullied Asian children, but none of the bullied white children in this sample, were called names about their colour. This racist name-calling appeared hurtful to the recipients and was often a reason for disliking other children. Racist name-calling should clearly be one focus of work in schools against bullying.
