Abstract

This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hygiene practices and water consumption in Indonesia. Data were collected through an online survey, supplemented by the official national socio-economic survey. The findings indicate an increase in hygiene practices, particularly handwashing, aligned with health protocols. This behavior led to higher water and hygiene product usage, unaffected by socio-economic factors. Respondents' perception of COVID-19 and compliance with health protocols drove the increase, with older individuals preferring handwashing with water and younger individuals favoring hand sanitizer. Access to improved drinking water remained stagnant, while bottled water consumption rose. This highlights challenges in achieving the SDG 6 targets for safe drinking water. This study stresses the need to address COVID-19 perception to promote better hygiene practices and raises concerns about increased water usage, domestic pollution, and wastewater management during and after the pandemic. These insights could inform policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working in public health and water management to achieve SDG 6 goals amidst the pandemic and beyond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Although numerous studies have argued that sanitation workers play a significant role in the existing sanitation system while being at the cost of their health and dignity in an inappropriate work environment, they are often socially ostracized, and hence understudied to date. This study aimed to examine the current state of garbage workers, who engage in unloading and sorting garbage along with a particular focus on exploring personal hygiene, dignity, and socioeconomic diversity. This study examined these aspects in a sample of seven garbage workers in an urban slum of Indonesia through participatory and interview surveys. The results showed that there were several particular sanitation-related issues affecting workers: wetness (e.g., menstrual products and animal corps), dirtiness, and hazardous garbage (e.g., medical syringes and broken glasses), which contributed to serious health-risk exposures. Participants reported high levels of feeling of safety and potential health-risk awareness; however, this study also demonstrated low levels of risk-controlling behaviors, representing no proper safety gears caused by two unique factors: physical discomfort and work inefficiency. Results also revealed the diversity in income generation accompanied by that participants work in the exclusive circle comprising family members, which may implicate their economic affluence. While dignity in/at work was entrenched in some workers in the context of social abuse, reframing process (e.g., affirmation) and hierarchical comparisons helped them experience their value in/at work. These findings need to be discussed in relation to past and recent studies in other economically developing countries for a better understanding of this population.

19. Pattern of child faeces management and disposable diaper usage among under-fives in an Urban Slum of Bandung, Indonesia

Abstract

Children's faecal waste is a major environmental health issue despite increasing access to sanitation facilities and sanitary products in Indonesia. This cross-sectional study investigated child faecal management practice and disposable diaper usage among under-fives living in an urban slum of Indonesia. Data on household socio-demographics, child characteristics, and child faeces management practices were collected from 184 randomly selected pairs of mothers and children through interviews and observations. Findings revealed children's common defaecation sites as improved toilet, disposable diaper, and reusable diaper at 33.7, 33.2, and 16.3%, respectively. However, hygienic child faeces disposal was at 45%. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that the common use of disposable diapers and bathroom floor as the child's defaecation site increased unhygienic disposal. This prevalence decreased for mothers with higher education and those who had initiated toilet training. Promoting mothers' disposal of child faeces from disposable diapers, preventing child defaecation on the bathroom floor, and initiating toilet training as soon as a child can walk alone are thus potential interventions.

Abstract

The aim of this experiments were to examine the effect of ozonizotion on COD and BOD5 value of wastewater from a detergent manufacturer and to put forward the efficiency of COD and BOD5 removal as a function of the ozonization. It has been known that the detergent industry produces wastewater with high concentration of both COD and BOD5. The observation showed that the ozonization alone was not a practical approachfor COD and BOD5 removal. However, the role of ozonization as a preliminary process before the biological one seems to be significant.

Abstract

Biohydrogen production research was carried out using raw materials of agricultural organic waste that was obtained from markets around the Bandung city. The organic part, which consisted of agricultural waste material, mainly fruit and vegetable waste, was crushed and milled using blender. The sludge that produced from milling process was then used as a substrate for mixed culture microorganism as a raw material to produce biohydrogen. As much as 1.2 kg.day-1 of sludge (4% of total solid) was fed into bioreactor that had a capacity of 30L. Experiment was done under anaerobic fermentation using bacteria mixture culture that maintained at pH in the range of 5.6-6.5 and temperature of 25-30oC on semi-continuous mode. Parameters of analysis include pH, temperature, total solid (TS), organic total solid (OTS), total gas production, and hydrogen gas production. The results showed that from 4% of substrate resulted 897.86 L of total gas, which contained 660.74 L (73.59%) of hydrogen gas. The rate of hydrogen production in this study was 11,063 mol.L-1.h-1. Abstract

This article proposes a Postmodern Sanitation concept, based on discussions such as what is necessary to solve the world's current sanitation issues and what are the limitations of the current sanitation concept. The proposed policies of the Postmodern Sanitation concept are: (1) to discuss a sanitation value chain that creates and adds value to human excreta, and products made from human excreta, and build a sanitation business model to drive this sanitation value chain; (2) to design a sanitation business model focusing on incentives for individual toilet users; (3) to analyze current users' value chains to find available potential resources; (4) to connect these potential sanitation resources to the next value chain; (5) to make a financial plan based on market analysis of sanitation products; and (6) to find and organize facilitating organizations to support the individual toilet users' businesses. This concept was applied in the case of a rural area in Burkina Faso, and an agro-sanitation business model was designed based on material flow analysis and value chain analysis. Abstract

Unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation and hygiene lead to deterioration of the child health condition in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional and health status of children living in an urban slum and to clarify the factors contributing to undernutrition and diarrhea prevalence by focusing on water, sanitation, and hygiene from three viewpoints: household environments, child personal hygiene practices, and knowledge and awareness. The study was conducted at a preschool and two elementary schools in the densely populated area of Bandung, Indonesia. Participants were 228 pairs of children and their caretakers. The survey involved 1) anthropometric measurements (height and weight), 2) handwashing observation using a checklist, and 3) questionnaires. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, not using a towel for handwashing practices (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.37; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.13-4.96) was significantly associated with an increased risk of stunting. Regarding household environments, children from households using tap water as drinking water were significantly associated with an increased risk of stunting and thinness compared with households using tank water (AOR = 2.26; 95% CI = 1.03-4.93; and AOR = 2.88; 95% CI = 1.13-7.35, respectively). Moreover, children from households using open containers for water storage were significantly associated with an increased risk of diarrhea (AOR = 5.01; 95% CI = 1.08-23.15). Therefore, drinking water management at home and proper personal hygiene practices of children are important for maintaining and promoting child health in urban Indonesian slums.
