Abstract

This paper illustrates, analyzes and classifies the specific problems posed by phraseological variation in literary translation. It is situated within the approach of the Leipzig School of Translatology, combining translatological aspects, particularly the question of translation quality, with a focus on the perspective of variational linguistics and perceptual translatology. The materials dealt with are phraseological units of various kinds used in texts with literary aspirations., La contribución ilustra, analiza y clasifica los problemas particulares que plantea la variación fraseológica en la traducción literaria. El trabajo se enmarca en los estudios de la Escuela Traductológica de Leipzig, compaginando aspectos translatológicos, particularmente la cuestión de la calidad de la traducción, con una mirada desde la perspectiva de la lingüística de variedades y la translatología perceptiva. El material de estudio está constituido por fraseologismos de diversa índole empleados en textos con aspiración literaria.

Abstract

A critical speech culture in which diverse and marginalized voices are heard is becoming increasingly important. In this context, gender-appropriate language seeks portraying plurality. However, new linguistic forms are the subject of heated debates, and opponents fear grammatical incorrectness, complications, deformations or constraints. While translation studies have been investigating how to avoid linguistic sexism since the 1980s (Godard 1988; Flotow 1991), the topic has hardly been addressed in interpreting studies, although gender-appropriate language is spreading rapidly and can occur in all areas of interpreters' work. In order to address the research gap regarding the implementation of gender equity principles in interpreting, this thesis examines ways of interpreting from a postcolonial, intersectional, and queer feminist perspective. The research question is what strategies can be used in consecutive interpreting from German into Spanish to avoid the generic masculine. An exploratory research design with methods of empirical social research, qualitative content analysis, critical discourse analysis and conversational analysis was employed. Video transcriptions and interviews with five interpreters involved in the project Ecuador en Movimiento exemplify the difficulty of consistently and confidently implementing gender-equitable language forms without sufficient prior practice. Yet, the increase of such forms over the course of the project indicates that gender-appropriate interpreting strategies can be learned and automated through systematic exercises. Being familiar with such strategies can be considered a core competence of today's interpreters and can help to balance power asymmetries and live up to the ideal of all-partiality without making discriminatory discourse invisible and unassailable.:1. Abstract

Ziele: Untersuchung der partiellen Koreferenz im Spanischen und Deutschen aus der Perspektive der Grammatik, der Fremdsprachenlehre und der Translatologie. Methode: Nach einerAnnäherung an die Deskription der partiellen Koreferenz als Phänomen der Sprachen im Allgemeinen wird die partielle Koreferenz im Spanischen untersucht. Dabei werden frühere Beschreibungsversuche berücksichtigt und die Kontexte und Strukturen betrachtet, in denen diese Konstruktion als grammatikalisch oder akzeptabel gilt. Ergebnisse: Nach einem Versuch der Erklärung der Restriktionen der Konstruktion im Spanischen wird die Position der spanischen Norm dargelegt und die Bedeutung der Struktur und der Umgang mit ihr im Spracherwerb des Spanischen, in der Kontrastiven Linguistik und insbesondere in der Übersetzung betrachtet.

Abstract

The Spanish construction lo que pasa es que 'what happens is that', 'the thing is' is used in a wide variety of contexts and with a range of different meanings. Linguistic research that has been carried out on this relatively common construction often fails to include empirically collected data and, as a result, the diasystematic markers thereof have only been described to a very limited extent. The main focus of this article is to investigate the use of the construction lo que pasa es que and its phonetically reduced forms lo que pasa que and lo que in two Spanish-language oral speech corpora collected in Getxo (Basque Country) and Barcelona (Catalonia). These data are used to carry out a quantitative and qualitative study of the presence or absence of this construction in both regions of language contact, something which has yet to be considered or systematically analysed in the relevant research. The study identifies a statistically relevant diatopic markedness of the forms lo que pasa es que, lo que pasa and pasa que while also providing empirical proof for the pragmatic use of these constructions within the varieties investigated. En esta contribución presentamos los resultados de un estudio de percepción parcialmente representativo llevado a cabo para determinar cómo se entiende la perífrasis verbal hube de + inf. en el español de España, de Cuba, de Uruguay y de Argentina, y si el valor avertivo de la perífrasis en gallego llevó a la presencia de esta categoría en las variedades estudiadas. Mediante el análisis de entrevistas realizadas en diferentes ciudades de España (Barcelona, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela), Argentina (Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Santiago del Estero, Tucumán, Córdoba y otras ciudades en la provincia de Córdoba), Uruguay (Montevideo) y Cuba (La Habana, Santa Clara), fue posible demostrar que en las variedades cubana y rioplatense (Uruguay, Buenos Aires) no hay ninguna indicación de una influencia del valor avertivo gallego hube de + inf., mientras que se pudo comprobar que existe al menos la percepción del hube de + inf. avertivo en la variedad argentina cordobesa., {"references":["Álvarez, R., X. 35. La introducción del anglicismo berry/berries en el español de Chile: historia, proceso integrativo y consecuencias semánticas

Abstract

Lexical innovation is a continuous creative phenomenon which evinces language vitality. In today’s Spanish, borrowing words from other languages is a fruitful innovation mechanism. In Chilean Spanish, a significant portion of lexical neology comes from English loanwords, a fact that may be attributed in part to the global, open-market model upon which the country bases its economy. In this context and because of its linguistic and cultural relevance, we established the development process of the English loanword berry/berries in Chilean Spanish. To this end, this paper presents an analysis of the sociohistorical background that gave rise to the introduction of this Anglicism in Chile. This mixed-methods research includes the analysis of texts, interviews, surveys and field study. A contrastive lexicographic description of berry and its equivalents in Spanish is provided, the role of different types of speakers —from experts to laypeople— is analyzed in relation to the incorporation of this neologism in Chilean Spanish, the occurrence of different existing denominations is examined, some neologicity indicators are analyzed, possible combinations of berry/berries with other elements are classified, and the evolution of this Anglicism in Chilean Spanish use is confirmed.

Abstract

The purpose of this contribution is to present the terminology used by Michael Papo in his travel guide El Trajumán o libro de converśación en español y alemán (nemŝesco) por provecho de muchos siñores del Oriente que viajan a_la Nemŝia recoǵido de los mijores libros de converśación que hay en ditas lenguas por el minor: Menaḥem b. Michael Papo published in 1884 in Vienna. The focus of the linguistic analysis is (a) on the variation of these units on the book and on the reasons for this variation and (b) on a classification of the terminology. To this end, we will take the theoretical approach of variational linguistics and make methodological use of the new tools that text linguistics has made available for textual analysis. La finalidad de este trabajo es presentar la terminología empleada por Michael Papo en su obra El Trajumán o libro de converśación en español y alemán (nemŝesco) por provecho de muchos siñores del Oriente que viajan a_la Nemŝia recoǵido de los mijores libros de converśación que hay en ditas lenguas por el minor: Menaḥem b. Michael Papo, publicada en Viena en 1884, y efectuar un análisis lingüístico de la misma, poniendo el foco (a) en la variación de estas unidades en la obra y en las causas que se hallan tras dicha variación y (b) en una clasificación de la terminología constatada. Para ello, tomaremos el marco teórico de la lingüística variacional y nos valdremos metodológicamente de las nuevas herramientas que la lingüística del texto ha puesto a disposición del análisis textual.
