1. A study of the omega omega channel produced in central pp interactions at 450 GeV/c

Abstract

The reaction pp –> p(f)(omega omega)p(s) has been studied at 450 CeV/e and a spin analysis of the omega omega channel has been performed for the first time in central production. Evidence is found for the f(2)(1910) in the f(2)(1910) in the J(PC) =2(++) wave with spin projection J(Z)= 2. This is the only state observed in central production with spin projection J(Z)= 2. Its dP(T) and phi dependencies are similar to those observed for other glueball candidates. In addition, evidence is found for a state with J(PC) = 4(++) consistent with the f(2)(2300). Abstract

The reaction pp –> Pf(eta eta)p(s) has been studied at 450 GeV/c. For the first time a partial wave analysis of the centrally produced eta eta system has been performed. Abstract

{The production and decay properties of the f(0)(1370), f(0)(1500), f(0)(2000) and f(2)(1950) have been studied in central pp interactions at 450 GeV/c. The dP(T), phi and \textbackslash{}t\textbackslash{} distributions of these resonances are presented. For the J= 0 states, the f(0)(1370) and f(0)(2000) have similar dP(T) and phi dependences. These are different to the dP(T) and phi dependences of the f(0)(980), f(0)(1500) and f(0)(1710). For the J = 2 states the f(2)(1950) has different dependences to the f(2)(1270) and f(2)(1520). Abstract

The reaction pp –> p(f)(eta pi(+)pi(-))p(s) has been studied at 450 GeV/c. There is clear evidence for an a(2)(1320)pi decay mode of the eta(2)(1645) and eta(2)(1870). In addition, there is evidence for an a(0)(980)pi decay mode of both resonances and an f(2)(1270)eta decay mode of the eta(2)(1870). No evidence is found for a J(PC) = 2(++)a(2)(1320)pi wave. Abstract

The reactions pp –> p(f)(X-0)p(s), where X-0 is observed decaying to eta eta’ and eta’eta’, have been studied at 450 GeV/c. This is the first time that these channels have been observed in central production and only the second time that the eta’eta’ channel has been observed in any production mechanism. In the eta eta’ channel there is evidence for the f(0)(1500) and a peak at 1.95 GeV. The eta’eta’ channel shows a peak at threshold which is compatible with having J(PC) = 2(++) and spin projection J(Z) = 0. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

A search for centrally produced charmonium states has been presented. There is no significant evidence for any charmonium production. Abstract

The reactions pp –> p(f)(X-0)p(s), where X-0 is observed decaying to pi(0)pi(0)pi(0)pi(0), pi(+)pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) and pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)pi(0), have been studied at 450 GeV/c. Abstract

A study of the centrally produced p (p) over bar, p (p) over bar pi(0), p (p) over bar pi(+)pi(-) and Lambda Lambda channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. No significant new structures are observed in the mass spectra, however, important new information on the production dynamics is obtained. A systematic study of the production properties of these systems has been performed and it is found that these systems are not produced dominantly by double Pomeron exchange. Abstract

A coupled channel analysis of the centrally produced K+K- and pi(+)pi(-) final states has been performed in pp collisions at an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. The pole positions and branching ratios to pi pi and K (K) over bar of the f(0)(980), f(0)(1370), f(0)(1500) and f(0)(1710) have been determined. Abstract

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced K+K and (KSKS0)-K-0 channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found in each channel. The striking feature is the observation of peaks in the S-wave corresponding to the f(0)(1500) and f(J)(1710) with J = 0. The D-wave shows evidence for the f(2)(1270)/a(2)(1320), the f(2)’(1525) and the f(2)(2150) but there is no evidence for a statistically significant contribution in the D-wave in the 1.7 GeV mass region. Abstract

Abstract

A study has been made of pseudoscalar mesons produced centrally in pp interactions. The results show that the eta and eta’ appear to have a similar production mechanism which differs from that of the pi(0). The production properties of the eta and eta’ are not consistent with what is expected from double Porneron exchange. In addition the production mechanism for the eta and eta’ is such that the production cross section are greatest when the azimuthal angle between the p(T) vectors of the two protons is 90 degrees. Abstract

The reaction pp –> p(f)p(s)(K+K-K+K-) in which the K+K-K+K- system is centrally produced has been studied at 450 GeV/c. phi phi production has been found to dominate this reaction and is compatible with being produced by double Pomeron exchange. Abstract

The reaction pp –> p(f)(pi(+)pi(-)pi(0))p(s) has been studied at 450 GeV/c in an experiment designed to search for gluonic status. A spin analysis has been performed and the dP(T) filter applied. The analysis confirms the previous observation that all undisputed ( states are suppressed at small dP(T). In addition, a clear difference is observed in the production mechanism for the eta and omega. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

A study of the reactions pp –> p(f)p(s)(K+K- pi(+)pi(-)) and pp –> p(f)p(s)(K+K- pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)) shows evidence for the K*(892) (K) over bar*(892) and phi omega channels respectively. The K*(892) (K) over bar*(892) mass spectrum shows a broad distribution with a maximum near threshold and an angular analysis shows that it is compatible with having J(P) = 2(+). The behaviour of the cross-section as a function of centre of mass energy, and the four momentum transfer dependence, are compatible with what would be expected if the K*(892) (K) over bar*(892) system was produced via double Pomeron exchange. The dP(T) behaviour of the phi omega channel is similar to what has been observed for all the undisputed states. In contrast, the dP(T) behaviour of the K*(892) (K) over bar*(892) final state is similar to what has been observed for the phi phi final state and for previously observed glueball candidates. Abstract

The reaction pp –> P-f(pi(+) pi(-)pi(+)pi(-))p(s) has been studied at 450 GeV/c in an experiment designed to search for gluonic states. A spin analysis has been performed and the dP(T) filter applied. In addition to the well known f(1)(1285) there is evidence for two J(PC) = 2(-+) states called the eta(2)(1620) and eta(2)(1875) and a broad scalar called the f(0)(2000). The production of these states as a function of the dP, kinematical filter shows the behaviour expected for q (q) over bar states. In contrast, there is evidence for two states at 1.45 GeV and at 1.9 GeV which do not show the behaviour observed for q (q) over bar states. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

Results are presented of an analysis of the reactions pp –> p(f)((KsK)-K-0 (+/-) pi(-/+))p(s) and pp –> p(f)((KsKs0)-K-0 pi(0))p(s) at 450 GeV/c. Clear f(1)(1285) and f(1)(1420) signals are seen and a spin parity analysis shows that both have I(G)J(PC) = 0(+) 1(++). The f(1)(1285) decays to a(0)(980)pi and the f(1)(1420) decays to K*(K) over bar Both states have a similar dependence as a function of dP(T) consistent with what has been observed for other q (q) over bar states. Evidence is also presented for a K*(K) over bar decay mode of the eta(2)(1620). (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

We present preliminary results about charged particle production in S-S collisions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon, obtained by WA94 experiment at CERN-SPS. The particle identification has been provided by the Omega RICH; a silicon telescope and an array of multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC) have been used to track particles to the RICH detector. Details about particle tracking and identification procedure are also reported.
