Introduction: Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass, which increases the risk of fractures and can arise from primary or secondary causes. The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency and causes of secondary osteoporosis diagnosis in patients presenting to our clinic, as well as to assess the clinical characteristics and treatment responses of these patients. Materials and Methods: Seventy patients with secondary osteoporosis, who were followed and treated for at least two years due to chronic disease, were included in the study. The clinical characteristics, comorbidities, medications used, laboratory tests, Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scans, magnetic resonance imaging results, and treatment protocols of the patients were evaluated. Results: The mean age of the patients was 10.37±3.81 years. The mean age at diagnosis of the primary disease (chronic illness) was 4.47±3.54 years. The mean duration for the development of osteoporosis was 5.76±4.31 years. Among the cases, 21 (30%) had oncological, 15 (21.5%) had rheumatological, 11 (15.7%) had nephrological, 11 (15.7%) had hematological, 4 (5.7%) had neurological diseases, and 8 (11.4%) had other diseases. Of the patients, 35 (50%) had a history of steroid use, 16 (22.9%) used both steroids and methotrexate (MTX), 10 (14.3%) used MTX, and 9 (12.9%) used antiepileptic drugs. The mean vertebral DXA Z-score before treatment was -3.06±1.05, while the DXA Z-scores at the 1st and 2nd years of treatment were -2.51±1.09 and -2.16±1.15, respectively. A significant difference was found between the pre-treatment and 1st and 2nd year DXA Z-scores (p<0.001). Conclusion: In our study, patients with secondary osteoporosis caused by various chronic diseases and their treatments were evaluated. With treatment, significant positive changes in bone mineral density and clinical findings were observed. There is a need for the development of guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of secondary osteoporosis patients and for the creation of larger databases through prospective studies to guide clinical practices. Objective: Mixed gonadal dysgenesis (MGD) is an uncommon chromosomal Disorder of Sexual Development (DSD). There is insufficient information regarding clinical findings and growth patterns. This study aimed to provide more information about mixed gonadal dysgenesis, which has not yet been sufficiently defined. Materials and Methods: Data from 10 patients diagnosed with mixed gonadal dysgenesis were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical presentations, complaints at admission, imaging, genetic results, and treatments received by the patients were examined. Gonadal status and the gender of the patients were reared and evaluated by a multidisciplinary council decision. If received, growth hormone treatment doses and height gains were examined. Results: The patients’ ages at admission range from 6 months to 17.5 years. The median height SDS of the patients was −0.75 (2.73), the mean body weight SDS was −0.49 (±1.46), and the mean body mass index (BMI) SDS was 0.26 (±0.97). The complaints at admission varied, including ambiguous genitalia, short stature, and absence of menstruation. Some patients are completely in the female phenotype, while some are inadequately virilized male phenotype. External Masculinization Score (EMS) ranges from 1 to 6.5. The decision to raise 6 patients as female and 4 patients as male was made by a multidisciplinary council. Growth hormone treatment was administered to patients raised as female and diagnosed with short stature. The height SDS gain in treated patients was 0.42 (±0.49). Conclusion: Due to its rarity and varied clinical presentation, our knowledge about mixed gonadal dysgenesis is limited. Therefore, early diagnosis and individualized treatment plans are crucial for this patient group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to analyze the depressive and anxiety states of adolescent girls with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This was a cross-sectional, multicenter, case-control study. A total of 100 participants (PCOS group, 51; control group, 49) aged 13-18 yr were included in the study. Body mass index was higher in patients with PCOS (P = 0.002). In the PCOS group, 28.5% of the patients had moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms, whereas the incidence was lower in controls (8.3%, P = 0.021). The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)-State, STAI-Trait, and physical, psychosocial, and total Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory PedsQL scores were higher in the PCOS group, suggesting that anxiety was more common and the quality of life was worse in patients with PCOS than in healthy participants (P = 0.01, P = 0.03, P = 0.02, P = 0.046, and P = 0.047, respectively). The serum free testosterone (fT) levels were positively correlated with the depression and anxiety scores and negatively correlated with the psychosocial PedsQL scores. In conclusion, adolescent girls diagnosed with PCOS demonstrated higher depressive and anxiety symptoms and lower psychosocial quality of life scores than their healthy counterparts. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate presentations of new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus in a pediatric cohort during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Materials and Methods: This study was designed as a single-center, descriptive, cross-sectional retrospective study. The patients diagnosed with new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus between April 1, 2020, and April 1, 2021, were included in the study. The rate of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reactivity-positivity was investigated. The pandemic period was compared with the same period of the pre-pandemic 2 years in terms of number of new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus patients, rate of presentation with diabetic ketoacidosis, and degree of diabetic ketoacidosis severity. Results: In total, 56 patients were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus during the pandemic and 2 (3.57%) of them tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction. The number of new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus patients was 39 in 2019 and 39 in 2018. The rate of presentation with diabetic ketoacidosis was similar in the pandemic period compared to the pre-pandemic periods (53.5% in 2020 vs. 56.4% in 2019 and 53.8% in 2018; P = .94). The proportion of severe diabetic ketoacidosis was also similar in all years, respectively (43.3% in 2020 vs. 45.4% in 2019 and 47.6% in 2018; P = .95). Conclusion: We reported only 2 cases that tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2among the new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus patients during the pandemic. Although we found an increase in the number of new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus cases by comparing with prepandemic period, rates of diabetic ketoacidosis and severe diabetic ketoacidosis were similar. There was no finding to suggest that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2taking a part in type 1 diabetes mellitus pathogenesis. Since the development of type 1 diabetes mellitus is a long process, prospective studies are needed to investigate the long-term effects of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA) is a rare disorder that, if not promptly recognized and treated, can lead to life-threatening hyperkalemia resulting in cardiac arrest and death. Systemic PHA is caused by variants that deactivate the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) subunits. Management is challenging due to high-dose oral replacement therapy, and patients with systemic PHA require lifelong treatment. Here, we present the clinical course of a newborn diagnosed with PHA at 7 days of age due to severe dehydration, inadequate feeding, vomiting, and lethargy. The patient was found to be homozygous for the variant c.1234dup (p.Glu412Glyfs*39) in exon 8 of the SCNN1B gene. The patient had multiple hospitalizations during follow-up and died at the age of 10 months due to pneumonia. Maintaining a high clinical suspicion for PHA is crucial for initiating treatment and preventing potential cardiac arrest and death in these patients. Further research is needed to determine the significance of such novel mutations in this disease.
