Abstract

ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges.

11. Library and Information Services for Persons with Disabilities: Indian Students Perspectives Survey

Abstract

An academic library plays a significant role in providing information services to fraternities. However, persons with disabilities need special attention and specialized services. This study aims to identify the special needs of, and the services required by, persons with disabilities or differently-abled persons. The samples were collected from graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students with disabilities in 10 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India. The survey research design and the snowball sampling technique were used to collect samples from scattered populations across the ten IITs. A total of 217 samples were collected from the respondents. The results show that graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students with disabilities were satisfied with the library resources and services available to persons with disabilities. The students had a positive opinion about the accessibility of their libraries and the impact of information and communications technology (ICT) on their studies and research work. However, they expressed the need for more training and orientation on using new tools and services for persons with disabilities. The study identified essential library tools and services for persons with disabilities. Academic and other libraries elsewhere in the country should take a cue from the IITs and take steps to make themselves accessible and offer specialized services for persons with disabilities. The findings of this research study will be helpful for policymakers and librarians who want to establish special services for persons with disabilities.

Abstract

With the increasing concern about global environmental protection and energy demand due to rapid growth of population in developing countries and the diminishing trend of resources of conventional grid supply, the need to produce freely available pollution free natural energy such as solar/wind energy has been drawing increasing interest in every corner of the world. In an effort to utilize these energies effectively through Power converter, a great deal of research is being carried out by different researchers / scientist and engineers at different places in the world to meet the increasing demand of load. The study presents methodology to integrate solar (PV) energy (which is freely available in every corner of the world) with grid source and supplement the existing grid power in rural houses during its cut off or restricted supply period. In order to get consistency in supply a DG is also added as a standby source in the proposed integration of network. The software using novel Direct PWM modulation strategy and its soft control features extend the flexibility to control converter (inverter) parameters like voltage, frequency, number of samples of PWM pulses constituting sine-wave without changing any hardware configuration in the circuit. The system simulation of PWM Pulse generation has been done on a XILINX based FPGA Spartan 3E board using VHDL code. 31. Tuning of structural and optical properties of reactively sputtered MoOx films.

Abstract

MoOx films were deposited using reactive sputtering of Mo under varying oxygen flow in the plasma ambient. The films showed a broad X-ray diffraction peak corresponding to MoOx structure. The surface morphology has been influenced significantly with the oxygen content in the plasma during the process of film deposition. The as-deposited films were porous at lower oxygen flow rate (< 10 sccm), while it showed coarse structure at the higher flow rates (> 15 sccm). The compositional analysis revealed that the films are sub-stoichiometric and the weight ratio of O/Mo varied from 1.5 to 2 in the O2 flow range of 5–25 sccm. The sub-stoichiometric phases of MoO3 were detected from FTIR analysis. The optical characteristics showed that the films were highly transparent (> 85%) in the visible region, and exhibited direct band gap energy of 3.66 eV. The optical constants, i.e., refractive index (n) and extinction coefficient (k) evaluated from spectroscopic ellipsometry were found to be 2.03 and 0.0035, respectively at the wavelength of 600 nm, for the films deposited at the optimum conditions. The films showed a broad luminescence with a strong emission at 400 nm, which would help improve the blue response of solar cells. The Al/MoOx/Si device showed a maximum barrier height, ϕ b ~0.86 eV and a minimum leakage current, Io ~ 5.81 × 10–11 A at the higher O2 flow rates (> 15 sccm), which changed significantly with the oxygen flow rate. The study demonstrates the tunability of structural and optical characteristics, which have been significantly influenced by tuning the plasma ambient during the film deposition. Abstract

This study reports the result of a survey conducted at Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMIU) to determine the extent to which user are aware and make use of online journals. The study also examines the search pattern of online journals. A questionnaire was distributed among the Faculty members, Research scholars and Post-Graduate Students to collect desired data. A total of 120 questionnaires were distributed to the selected sample of Faculty of Natural Sciences; 70 valid samples were collected. The study found that the majority of users are aware about the availability of online journals. 60% of respondents want to use online version of journals whereas a few want to use printed journals. Majority of respondents use online journals for their research work. 70% of respondents take printout before using online journals. It was found that users faced problem when using online journals. They are also interested to take training to use online journals.

42. Variation of aerosol parameters (AI, AOD) and SO2 over Indo-Gangetic basin during COVID-19 outbreaks.

Abstract

To stop the spread of COVID-19 infections, idea of complete and partial lockdowns was implemented in several countries. In the present work, variation of aerosol index (AI), aerosol optical depth (AOD) and SO2 concentration over Indo-Gangetic Basin regions (over highly polluted cities: Varanasi, Kanpur and Delhi) were analyzed to see the impact of lockdown periods during 2020. AI data were taken from satellite based ozone monitoring instrument while AOD and SO2 data were taken from moderate resolution spectroradiometer (MODIS). Lockdown periods of March, April, May and June months of 2020 were compared with the same months of 2017, 2018 and 2019. Significantly large difference in AI was observed associated with decreased value of AI during lockdown periods followed by AOD values and SO2 concentrations. All these cities of Northern India (Varanasi, Kanpur and Delhi) show significant decline in aerosol index which indicate less emissions of black carbon and other absorbing aerosol particles into the atmosphere. Trend of AI and SO2 concentration were found to be negative due to the sudden decrease in their values. Decline in the aerosol parameters (AI and AOD) and air pollutant (SO2) suggest improved air quality of the highly polluted cities of India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
