NASA LaRC is developing and integrating a double-Pulsed 2-micron direct detection IPDA lidar for CO2 column measurement from an airborne platform. The presentation will describe the development of the 2-micrometers IPDA lidar system and present the airborne measurement of column CO2 and will compare to in-situ measurement for various ground target of different reflectivity.

Knowledge derived from global tropospheric wind measurement is an important constituent of our overall understanding of climate behavior [1]. Accurate weather prediction saves lives and protects properties from destructions. High-energy 2-micron laser is the transmitter of choice for coherent Doppler wind detection. In addition to the eye-safety, the wavelength of the transmitter suitably matches the aerosol size in the lower troposphere. Although the technology of the 2-micron laser has been maturing steadily, lidar derived wind data is still a void in the global weather database. In the last decade, researchers at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) have been engaged in this endeavor, contributing to the scientific database of 2-micron lidar transmitters. As part of this effort, an in depth analysis of the physics involved in the workings of the Ho: Tm laser systems have been published. In the last few years, we have demonstrated lidar transmitter with over1Joule output energy. In addition, a large body of work has been done in characterizing new laser materials and unique crystal configurations to enhance the efficiency and output energy of the 2-micron laser systems. At present 2-micron lidar systems are measuring wind from both ground and airborne platforms. This paper will provide an overview of the advancements made in recent years and the technology maturity levels attained.

NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), in partnership with the University of Delaware (UD), developed AlGaAsSb/InGaAsSb custom-designed phototransistors in the 0.6-2.5 micron wavelength range for applications to laser remote sensing. The phototransistor s performance greatly exceeds the previously reported results at this wavelength range in the literature. The performances of the custom-designed phototransistor, such as responsivity, detectivity, and gain, are improved significantly as compared to the previously published detectors as well as commercial detectors. Detection in the 0.6- to 2.5- micron broadband with a single phototransistor will result in reduction or elimination of heavy and complex optical components now required for multiple wavelength detection in atmospheric remote sensors resulting in smaller, lighter, simpler instruments with higher performance. This high performance broadband phototransistor will eliminate the need for high power laser for active remote sensing and also the Si (1.0- micron cutoff) and InGaAs (extended 2.3- micron cutoff) detectors. The developed broadband phototransistor will be applicable for the next generation of space-based Earth observations and other planetary instruments for active and passive remote sensing with substantial reduction in size, complexity, and weight to measure water vapor, methane, and carbon dioxide in planetary atmospheres as well as aerosol, cloud, water vapor, O2, CO, and CO2 for a broad range of applications to Earth and Space Science Missions under Science Mission Directorate (SMD) research programs.

Remote Raman [e.g.,1-5] and micro-Raman spectroscopy [e.g., 6-10] are being evaluated on geological samples for their potential applications on Mars rover or lander. The Raman lines of minerals are sharp and distinct. The Raman finger-prints of minerals do not shift appreciably but remain distinct even in sub-micron grains and, therefore, can be used for mineral identification in fine-grained rocks [e.g., 4,7]. In this work we have evaluated the capability of a directly coupled remote Raman system (co-axial configuration) for distinguishing the mineralogy of multiple crystals in the exciting laser beam. We have measured the Raman spectra of minerals in the near vicinity of each other and excited with a laser beam (e.g. -quartz (Qz) and K-feldspar (Feld) plates, each 5 mm thick). The spectra of composite transparent mineral plates of 5 mm thickness of -quartz and gypsum over calcite crystal were measured with the composite samples perpendicular to the exciting laser beam. The measurements of remote Raman spectra of various bulk minerals, and mixed and composite minerals with our portable UH remote Raman system were carried out at the Langley Research Center in a fully illuminated laboratory.

We report the first AlGaAsSb/InGaAsSb phototransistors with a cutoff wavelength (50% of peak responsivity) of 2.4 micrometers operating in a broad range of temperatures. These devices are also the first AlGaAsSb/InGaAsSb heterojunction phototransistors (HPT) grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). This work is a continuation of a preceding study, which was carried out using LPE (liquid phase epitaxy)-grown AlGaAsSb/InGaAsSb/GaSb heterostructures. Although the LPE-related work resulted in the fabrication of an HPT with excellent parameters [1-4], the room temperature cutoff wavelength of these devices (approximately 2.15 micrometers) was determined by fundamental limitations implied by the close-to-equilibrium growth from Al-In-Ga-As-Sb melts. As the MBE technique is free from the above limitations, AlGaAsSb/InGaAsSb/GaSb heterostructures for HPT with a narrower bandgap of the InGaAsSb base and collector - and hence sensitivity at longer wavelengths (lambda) - were grown in this work. Moreover, MBE - compared to LPE - provides better control over doping levels, composition and width of the AlGaAsSb and InGaAsSb layers, compositional and doping profiles, especially with regard to abrupt heterojunctions. The new MBE-grown HPT exhibited both high responsivity R (up to 2334 A/W for lambda=2.05 micrometers at -20 deg C.) and specific detectivity D* (up to 2.1 x 10(exp 11) cmHz(exp 1/2)/W for lambda=2.05 micrometers at -20 deg C).

New submount technology is essential for the development of conductively cooled high power diode laser. The simulation and experimental results indicate that thermal conductivity of submount for high power laser-diode must be at least 600 W/m/k or higher for stable operation. We have simulated several theoretical thermal model based on new submount designs and characterized high power diode lasers to determine temperature effects on the performances of laser diodes. The characterization system measures the beam power, output beam profile, temperature distribution, and spectroscopic property of high power diode laser. The characterization system is composed of four main parts: an infrared imaging camera, a CCD camera, a monochromator, and a power meter. Thermal characteristics of two commercial-grade CW 20-W diode laser bars with open heat-sink type were determined with respect to the line shift of emission spectra and beam power stability. The center wavelength of laser emission has a tendency to shift toward longer wavelength as the driving current and heat sink temperature are increased. The increase of heat sink temperature decreases the output power of the laser bar too. Such results lay the guidelines for the design of new submount for high power laser-diodes.

Simultaneous profiles of aerosol backscatter ratio were measured over Lauder, New Zealand (45 deg S, 170 deg E) on the night of November 24, 1992. Instrumentation comprised two complementary lidar systems and a backscattersonde, to give measurements at wavelengths 351, 490, 532, and 940 nm. The data from the lidars and the backscattersonde were self-consistent, enabling the wavelength dependence of aerosol backscatter to be determined as a function of altitude. This wavelength-dependence is a useful parameter in radiative transfer calculations. In the stratosphere, the average wavelength exponent between 351 and 940 nm was -1.23 +/- 0.1, which was in good agreement with values derived from measured physical properties of aerosols.

A light source is described for the efficient generation of 1.54-micron for eye-safe aerosol lidar operation. The system is based upon an Nd:YAG laser at 1.06 micron which is then Raman-shifted in methane to produce light at the first Stokes wavelength of 1.54 micron. First Stokes light generated in the backward direction was retroreflected back into the Raman cell for amplification in the tail of the 10 ns pump beam. The energy conversion efficiency and the spatial beam quality of the amplified first Stokes were found to be adversely affected when operated at higher repetition rates due to a thermal gradient produced in the generation region. A Stokes energy of 25 mJ was obtained for a pumping energy of 140 mJ at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The beam divergence of the amplified Stokes radiation was measured to be less than 1 mrad. The optimized results demonstrate the applicability of this radiation for eye-safe lidar measurements.

Research is summarized on applications of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) of laser light into near infrared wavelengths suitable for atmospheric monitoring. Issues addressed are conversion efficiency, spectral purity, optimization of operating conditions, and amplification techniques. A Raman cell was developed and built for the laboratory program, and is now available to NASA-Langley, either as a design or as a completed cell for laboratory or flight applications. The Raman cell has been approved for flight in NASA's DC-8 aircraft. The self-seeding SRS technique developed here is suggested as an essential improvement for tunable near-IR DIAL applications at wavelengths of order 1 micrometer or greater.

For improved DIAL measurements of water vapor in the upper troposphere or lower stratosphere, narrowband (about 0.03/cm) laser radiation at 720- and 940-nm wavelengths was generated by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), using the narrow linewidth (about 0.02/cm) output of a Nd:YAG-pumped dye laser. For a hydrogen pressure of 350 psi, the first Stokes conversion efficiencies to 940 nm were 20 percent and 35 percent, when using a conventional and waveguide Raman cell, respectively. The linewidth of the first Stokes line at high cell pressures, and the inferred collisional broadening coefficients, agree well with those previously measured in spontaneous Raman scattering.

Raman conversion efficiency and line broadening are reported for Stokes operation at 720 and 940 nm, with hydrogen and deuterium as the Raman source, and using an Nd:YAG pumped Quanta-Ray PDL-2 dye laser. The dye laser linewidth is 0.2/cm (FWHM) with the grating alone as an intracavity element, and the conversion efficiency at 400 psi was found to be 40 and 20 percent for outputs of 720 and 940 nm, respectively. Pressure broadening coefficients of (9.2 + or - 0.9) x 10 to the -5th per cm/psi for hydrogen, and 7.7 x 10 to the -5th per cm/psi for deuterium, were obtained in good agreement with previous results. The linewidth at the first Stokes wavelength was shown to be determined by pressure broadening in the Raman medium.

A laser transmission with very high degree of spectral purity was described. Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) dependence on the oscillator energy and the detuning away from the gain curve center are demonstrated. The effects of both finite laser linewidth and spectral purity on humidity measurements are experimentally demonstrated.

Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) measurements in the A-band of molecular oxygen were suggested as a means of profiling atmospheric density. Progress towards this capability is reported.
