The plate tectonic theory requires a rigid lithosphere floating over a weak asthenosphere, separated by the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, which has been sometimes interpreted as the Gutenberg discontinuity. Using a deep seismic reflection technique, we report the presence of two continuous reflections covering 27 Ma to 58 Ma oceanic lithosphere in the Atlantic Ocean. We find that the upper reflection deepens with age and follows the similar to 1250 degrees C isotherm, whereas the deeper reflection lies at a constant depth of similar to 75 km. We suggest that the upper reflection represents the thermally controlled lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, whereas the lower reflection is the Gutenberg discontinuity, a frozen-in dehydration boundary separating the dry mantle melting region above from the hydrated mantle below formed at the ridge axis. We also find that thermal mantle anomalies rejuvenate the lithosphere, uplift the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary, and destroy the Gutenberg discontinuity.

Oceanic transform faults, a key element of plate tectonics, represent the first-order discontinuities along mid-ocean ridges, host large earthquakes, and induce extreme thermal gradients in lithosphere. However, the thermal structure along transform faults and its effects on earthquake generation are poorly understood. Here we report the presence of a 10- to 15-kilometer-thick in-depth band of microseismicity in 10 to 34 kilometer depth range associated with a high-temperature (700° to 900°C) mantle below the brittle lithosphere along the Romanche mega transform fault in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The occurrence of the shallow 2016 moment magnitude 7.1 supershear rupture earthquake and these deep microearthquakes indicate that although large earthquakes occur in the upper brittle lithosphere, a substantial amount of deformation is accommodated in the semibrittle mylonitic mantle that resides at depths below the 600°C isotherm. We also observe a rapid westward deepening of this band of seismicity indicating a strong lateral heterogeneity.

Plate tectonics characterize transform faults as conservative plate boundaries where the lithosphere is neither created nor destroyed. In the Atlantic, both transform faults and their inactive traces, fracture zones, are interpreted to be structurally heterogeneous, representing thin, intensely fractured, and hydrothermally altered basaltic crust overlying serpentinized mantle. This view, however, has recently been challenged. Instead, transform zone crust might be magmatically augmented at ridge-transform intersections before becoming a fracture zone. Here, we present constraints on the structure of oceanic crust from seismic refraction and wide-angle data obtained along and across the St. Paul fracture zone near 18°W in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean. Most notably, both crust along the fracture zone and away from it shows an almost uniform thickness of 5–6 km, closely resembling normal oceanic crust. Further, a well-defined upper mantle refraction branch supports a normal mantle velocity of 8 km/s along the fracture zone valley. Therefore, the St. Paul fracture zone reflects magmatically accreted crust instead of the anomalous hydrated lithosphere. Little variation in crustal thickness and velocity structure along a 200 km long section across the fracture zone suggests that distance to a transform fault had negligible impact on crustal accretion. Alternatively, it could also indicate that a second phase of magmatic accretion at the proximal ridge-transform intersection overprinted features of starved magma supply occurring along the St. Paul transform fault. The crust beneath transform faults at slow-spreading ridges has been considered to be thin, comprising a thin mafic layer overlying serpentinized peridotite. Using wide-angle seismic data, we report the presence of a Moho at ∼6 km depth and a low-velocity anomaly extending down to 9 km beneath the 20-km-wide Romanche transform valley floor in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The low crustal velocities above the Moho could be due to either highly serpentinized mantle peridotite or fractured mafic rocks. The existence of clear Moho reflections and the occurrence of a large crustal-depth rupture during the 2016 magnitude 7.1 earthquake suggest that the crust likely consists of fractured mafic material. Furthermore, the presence of low velocities below the Moho advocates for extensive serpentinization of the mantle, indicating that the Moho reflection is unlikely to be produced by a serpentinization front. The crust to the north of the transform fault likely consists of mafic material, but that in the south appears to be more amagmatic, possibly containing serpentinized peridotite. Our results imply that the transform fault structure is complex and highly heterogeneous, and thus would have significant influence on earthquake rupture and alteration processes.

We present seismic tomographic results from a unique seismic refraction and wide-angle survey along a 600 km long flow-line corridor of oceanic lithosphere ranging in age from 0 to 27 Ma in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean at 2° 43′S. The velocities in the crust near the ridge axis rapidly increase in the first 6 Myr and then change gradually with age. The upper crust (Layer 2) thickness varies between 2 and 2.4 km with an average thickness of 2.2 km and the crustal thickness varies from 5.6 to 6 km along the profile with an average crustal thickness of 5.8 km. At some locations, we observe negative velocity anomalies (∼−0.3 km/s) in the lower crust which could be either due to chemical heterogeneity in gabbroic rocks and/or the effects of fault related deformation zones leading to an increase in porosities up to 1.6% depending on the pore/crack geometry. The existence of a low velocity anomaly beneath the ridge axis suggests the presence of partial melt (∼1.3%) in the lower crust. Upper mantle velocities also remain low (∼7.8 km/s) from ridge axis up to 5 Ma, indicating a high temperature regime associated with mantle melting zone underneath. These results suggest that the evolution of the crust and uppermost mantle at this location occur in the first 10 Ma of its formation and then remains unchanged. Most of the structures in the older crust and upper mantle are fossilized structures and could provide information about past processes at ocean spreading centers. Plain Language Summary Oceanic crust emplaced along mid-ocean ridges shows significant variations in the crustal thickness and velocity structures that might be controlled by spreading rate, aging or changes in ridge crest segmentation. Seismic full waveform inversion (FWI) is a powerful method for estimating quantitative subsurface physical parameters from seismic data. As the full waveform inversion is a non-linear problem, the linearized approach updates model iteratively from an initial model, which can get trapped in local minima. In the presence of a high velocity contrast, such as at Moho, the reflection coefficient and recorded waveforms from wide-aperture seismic acquisition are extremely non-linear around critical angles. The problem at the Moho is further complicated by the interference of lower crustal (Pg) and upper mantle (Pn) turning ray arrivals with the critically reflected Moho arrivals (PmP). In order to determine velocity structure near Moho, a non-linear method should be used. We propose to solve this strong non-linear FWI problem at Moho using a trans-dimensional Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, where the earth model between lower crust and upper mantle is idealy parameterized with a 1-D assumption using a variable number of velocity interfaces. Different from common MCMC methods that require determining the number of unknown as a fixed prior before inversion, trans-dimensional MCMC allows the flexibility for an automatic estimation of both the model complexity (e.g. the number of velocity interfaces) and the velocity-depth structure from the data. We first test the algorithm on synthetic data using four representative Moho models and then apply to an ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) data from the Mid-Atlantic Ocean. A 2-D finite-difference solution of an acoustic wave equation is used for data simulation at each iteration of MCMC search, for taking into account the lateral heterogeneities in the upper crust, which is constrained from travel time tomography and is kept unchanged during inversion; the 1-D model parameterization near Moho enables an efficient search of the trans-dimensional model space. Gas hydrates are ice-like crystalline materials that form under submarine environments of moderate pressure and low temperature. Another key factor to their formation is the abundance in gas supply from depth in addition to local biogenic gas. Detailed imaging and velocity analysis of the plumbing system of gas hydrates can provide confidence that amplitude anomalies in seismic data are related to gas hydrate accumulations. We have conducted 2D elastic full-waveform inversion (FWI) along a 14 km long segment of a 2D multichannel seismic profile to obtain a high-resolution velocity model of a hydrate system on the southern Hikurangi margin. We compare the FWI velocity model to previously published semblance- and tomography-based velocity models from the same data to explore how much more can be gained from the FWI. The FWI yielded a structurally more accurate velocity model that better delineated the low-velocity zone associated with free gas beneath the bottom simulating reflector (BSR) compared to the semblance- and tomography-based velocity models. Our results also find a lateral velocity inversion, that is, a narrow low-velocity zone surrounded by bands of higher velocities at a seaward-verging protothrust fault, which the two other methodologies failed to resolve. The FWI provides an improved lateral resolution making it an important tool when imaging the “plumbing” systems of gas hydrate reservoirs. In the southeastern limb of the anticline, our results find that the closely spaced landward-vergent protothrusts provide gas-charged fluids for hydrate formation above the BSR. Moreover, at the center of the anticline, our results find that a seaward-vergent protothrust fault appears to be acting as a conduit for gas-rich fluids into strata, although there is no accumulation of any significant hydrate above the BSR at the apex of the anticline.
