10. Over-the-Counter Drugs and Other Substances Used in Attempted Suicide Presented to Emergency Departments in Montreal, Canada

Abstract

Abstract.Background:Over-the-counter (OTC) analgesics are frequently used in suicide attempts. Accessibility, toxicity, and unsupervised acquisition of large amounts may be facilitators. Aims:To identify patient characteristics associated with OTC drug use as a suicide attempt method among adults. Method:A cross-sectional study was conducted using chart review of all individuals who presented to the emergency department (ED) of two adult general hospitals following a suicide attempt during 2009–2010 in Montreal, Canada. Results:Among the 369 suicide attempters identified, 181 used overdosing, 47% of whom used OTC drugs. In logistic regression, women and those with medical comorbidity were more likely to use overdosing, while those with substance use disorders were less likely to do so. Among those who overdosed, women were more likely to use OTC drugs, while those who were Caucasian, had children, comorbidities, diagnoses with substance use disorders, and made attempts in the Fall were less likely to do so. Substances most frequently used were: acetaminophen among OTC drugs (30%); antidepressants (37%), anxiolytics (30%), opioids (10%), and anticonvulsants (9%) among prescription drugs; and cocaine (10%) among recreational drugs. Limitations:Reasons for the suicide method choice were not available. Conclusion:OTC drugs, in particular acetaminophen, are frequently used in suicide attempts. Accessibility to these drugs may be an important contributor.

Abstract

Analysis of electromagnetic (EM) wave phenomena in complex media has attracted considerable interest over recent years, particularly due to applications such as biomedical, environmental remote sensing and photonic bandgap. In such applications, EM wave can interact with arbitrary geometries composed of anisotropic, dispersive and inhomogeneous media. In such cases, the use of analytical methods to obtain EM solutions may not be possible, thus, numerical methods that discretize Maxwell’s equations on a volumetric mesh are often sought. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is one such numerical method that is conceptually simple yet robust in handling complex media. However, several intrinsic problems persist, such as the time step size limitation as well as accurate incident wave source. In this research, we investigate such issues in FDTD and propose developments specifically for complex media. Abstract

Social media study, This study examined the relationship between narcissism and selfie posting and other self-promoting behaviors on social networking sites (SNS). Participants were asked questions on SNS usage such as: amount of time users spent on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram, frequency of selfie postings, Public vs Private profile, time spent editing selfies, and frequency of likes/tags/comments/hashtags/tweets. Results showed significant positive correlations between narcissism and several behaviors related to social media usage. This effect was also found to be mediated by self-interest motivation.

Abstract

The evoking freedom or "but you are free" (BYAF) technique is a social influence tactic that offers recipients the freedom to accept or decline a request. This research tested the effectiveness of the evoking freedom technique in two field experiments. Participants were asked either to complete a survey (Experiment 1) or to allow a stranger to borrow their mobile phone to make a call (Experiment 2) on an urban university campus. Half of the requests involved language that evoked freedom, and half of the requests were direct. In both experiments, results showed significantly greater compliance in the evoking freedom condition. This research extends previous work by demonstrating the effectiveness of the technique using a high-stakes request and in a culture other than that of France, where the majority of evoking freedom studies have been conducted. Abstract

Over the last six years (2007 to 2013) Malaysian Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) has recorded four fatality cases, 36 cases of Lost Time Incident (LTI), 24,964 lost work days, 24 Restricted Work Case, 28 Medical Treatment Case, 83 First Aid cases with recorded 196,352,113 man hours worked.On average, it has approximately 29 workers sustaining occupational harm annually. This paper reports the findings of a survey conducted using a set of questionnaire, in order to identify the main causes of occupational harm occurring in MMHE.Data was gathered using 150 workers from various different work stations in the company.The findings indicated that the main causes of occupational harms were the workers (70% foreigners (from 7 nations) and 30% locals) were not following or understanding the written work procedures and the work procedures were not being enforced by managers or superiors. The findings were used to justify the need of research into investigating the effectiveness of written workplace procedures and to reduce workplace occupational harms.

41. Late onset Intestinal Lymphangiectasia -A rare cause of bipedal edema in middle age

Abstract

Intestinal Lymphgiectasia is a rare disease characterized by hypoproteinemia, pedal edema and lymphocytopenia resulting from loss of lymph fluid into gastrointestinal tract. It can be primary or secondary and present during early childhood and rarely during adulthood. Presentation at 50 years is very very rare. The significance of this case lies in the late onset of Primary Intestinal lymphangiectasia which is a rare presentation of this very rare disease. The complaint of our patient was only bilateral pedal edema.
