Abstract

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, ushered by the deeper integration of digital technologies into professional and social spaces, provides an opportunity to meaningfully serve society. Humans have tremendous capability to innovatively improve social well-being when the situation is clear. Which was not the case during the first three revolutions. Thus, society has been accepting lifestyle changes willingly and several negative consequences unwillingly. Since the fourth one is still in its infancy, we can control it better. This paper presents a unified model of the industrialized ecosystem covering value creation, value consumption, enabling infrastructure, required skills, and additional governance. This design thinking viewpoint, which includes the consumer side of digital transformation, sets the stage for the next major lifestyle change, termed Digital Transfiguration. For validation and ease of comprehension, the model draws upon the well-understood automobile industry. Abstract

Cyber technologies are offering new horizons for quality control in manufacturing and safety assurance in-service of physical assets. The line between non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and Industry 4.0 is getting blurred since both are sensory data-driven domains. This multidisciplinary approach has led to the emergence of a new capability: NDE 4.0. The NDT community is coming together once again to define the purpose, chart the process, and address the adoption of emerging technologies. In this paper, the authors have taken a design thinking approach to spotlight proper objectives for research on this subject. It begins with qualitative research on twenty different perceptions of stakeholders and misconceptions around the current state of NDE. The interpretation is used to define ten value propositions or use cases under "NDE for Industry 4.0" and "Industry 4.0 for NDE" leading up to the clarity of purpose for NDE 4.0, enhanced safety and economic value for stakeholders. To pursue this worthy cause, the paper delves into some of the top adoption challenges, and proposes a journey of managed innovation, conscious skills development, and a new form of leadership required to succeed in the cyber-physical world.

Abstract

Recently designed cross-layer contention based synchronous MAC protocols like the PRMAC protocol, for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) enable a node to schedule multi-hop transmission of multiple data packets in a cycle. However, these systems accommodate both the request-to-send data process and the confirmation-to-send data process in the same data transmission scheduling window (i.e. data window). This reduces the length of the multi-hop flow setup in the data window. In a multi-hop scenario, this degrades both the packet delivery ratio (PDR) and the end-to-end transmission delay (E2ETD). In this paper, we propose a cross-layer contention based synchronous MAC protocol, which accommodates the request-to-send data process in the data window and the confirmation-to-send data process in the sleep window for increased efficiency. We evaluate our proposed protocol through ns-2.35 simulations and compare its performance with the PRMAC protocol. Results suggest that in multi-hop scenario, proposed protocol outperforms PRMAC both in terms of the E2ETD and the packet delivery ratio (PDR)., Comment: Accepted to TENCON 2016
