Abstract

Background and Objectives: Sensory neuronopathies (SNNs) are a rare group of pure sensory disorders causing asymmetrical, multifocal pattern of sensory loss with distinct clinical and electrophysiological features. We aimed to study the clinical features and etiology and share the experience of treating SNN from our center. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted over 3 years. Patients with predominant sensory complaints and electrophysiological evidence of neuropathy were evaluated. Possible/probable SNN was diagnosed using Camdessanch´e criteria. Detailed workup was done to determine the etiology and treatment given accordingly. Follow-up was done and response to treatment was assessed using modified Rankin Scale grading at 12 months. Results: Fourteen patients with SNN were studied. Two (14.3%) patients were diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome (SS-SNN), two (14.3%) with paraneoplastic syndrome, one (7.1%) with leprous ganglionitis, and nine (64.3%) were idiopathic sensory neuronopathy (I-SNN) cases. Improvement occurred in nine (64.3%), stability in three (21.4%), and worsening in two (14.3%) patients. Out of 11 SS-SNN and I-SNN patients, eight showed improvement on follow-up, seven with injection rituximab (RTX) and one with azathioprine. We found positive correlation between RTX treatment and improvement on follow-up (P = 0.0256). Six (66.66%) out of nine I-SNN patients had early initiation of immunotherapy, of which all improved. There was positive correlation between early treatment initiation time in I-SNN patients and improvement (P = 0.0119). Conclusions: Promising results were noted in SS-SNN and I-SNN patients with intensive treatment approach using RTX. Hit hard and early treatment approach is crucial for achieving improvement in sensory neuronopathies. Abstract

A new technique based on superposition of two speckle patterns is proposed and demonstrated for controlled modulation of the spatial polarization distribution of the resultant speckle. It is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that controlled modulation of the spatial polarization distribution of laser speckle can be achieved by proper choice of the polarization states as well as the average spatial intensity of the constituent speckles. It is also shown that the proposed technique is useful to generate different speckle patterns with sinusoidal variation in their degree of polarization, which can be tuned from zero to unity. This technique can find applications in sensing, biomedical studies, and in determining the rotation of the electric field vector after passing through a scattering medium.

Abstract

Inactivation kinetics of Escherichia coli K12 inoculated in blueberry, grapefruit, cantaloupe, and watermelon juices were evaluated at isothermal temperatures of 52 to 62 °C using thermal death time disks. Juices had variations in titratable acidity, pH, viscosity, and total soluble solids. Survival curves were described by Weibull and linear models, where D‐ and z‐values were determined using the first‐order model. D‐values in watermelon, cantaloupe, blueberry and grapefruit juices, were 6.57–0.64 min, 4.55–0.44 min, 3.94–0.27 min, and 3.03–0.24 min, respectively. The z‐values of E. coli K12 in tested fruit juices ranged from 5.33 to 5.89 °C. While there were no significant differences in the z‐values, the D‐values varied significantly. According to the results obtained, pH and heating temperature dramatically affect the thermal resistance of E. coli K12 under tested conditions. These findings offer a basis for developing predictive models for E. coli inactivation in fruit juices. Practical applications: Thermal death time (TDT) kinetics is extremely useful in ensuring microbial safety of fruit juices. The D‐ and z‐values calculated in this study can contribute to developing predictive models for inactivating E. coli in fruit juices with varied physicochemical attributes. Furthermore, the data and models can be used for optimization of pasteurization processes and regulatory compliance. TDT studies provide the scientific basis for process calculations and help juice manufacturers comply with regulatory requirements. Also, TDT studies help determine the minimal thermal treatments needed to inhibit spoilage organisms, ensuring the juice remains safe and palatable for longer periods. Abstract

Advancements in nanoscale engineering of oxide interfaces and heterostructures have led to discoveries of emergent phenomena and new artificial materials. Combining the strengths of reactive molecular-beam epitaxy and pulsed-laser deposition, we show here, with examples of Sr1+xTi1-xO3+delta, Ruddlesden-Popper phase Lan+1NinO3n+1 (n = 4), and LaAl1+yO3(1+0.5y)/SrTiO3 interfaces, that atomic layer-by-layer laser molecular-beam epitaxy (ALL-Laser MBE) significantly advances the state of the art in constructing oxide materials with atomic layer precision and control over stoichiometry. With ALL-Laser MBE we have produced conducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces at high oxygen pressures that show no evidence of oxygen vacancies, a capability not accessible by existing techniques. The carrier density of the interfacial two-dimensional electron gas thus obtained agrees quantitatively with the electronic reconstruction mechanism.
