1. What Are They Planning? An Analysis of Round 4 Partnership Districts' Improvement Goals and Plans. Research Report

Abstract: School improvement is an iterative process through which districts and schools develop their capacity, implement and refine new policies and practices, and respond to new developments and needs over time. School improvement policy can also be considered an iterative process, with policy implementors learning from previous rounds of a policy. Michigan developed the Partnership Model for School and District Turnaround to provide support and accountability for its lowest-performing schools (i.e., Comprehensive Support and Improvement schools, or CSI schools). In November 2022, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) identified the current round (Round 4) of Partnership schools and districts. By the spring of 2023, Partnership districts outlined new improvement goals and accountability measures, and by fall of 2023 they developed improvement plans to meet those goals. Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, they began to implement those improvement plans. This report describes the goals and planning activities for Round 4 of Partnership schools and districts and analyzes the targets that they set, the accountability measures they selected, and the specific activities they planned to implement as part of their improvement efforts.

2. The Role of School-Based Transportation in School Choice: Evidence from Detroit. Technical Report

Abstract: In school choice systems, many families face geographic constraints. Yet, there is limited evidence on the association between school-based transportation and students' school choice, especially in fragmented transportation contexts. Using unique data on Detroit kindergarten students' eligibility and access to school-based transportation, we find that students with access to a bus at a school-- either a traditional or shuttle-style bus--were 4-5 percentage points more likely to enroll in that school. The association was greater for traditional buses in higher-crime neighborhoods and for shuttle-style buses for farther-away choices. We did not find that this association differed by block-group-level household car ownership. Our findings suggest that school-based transportation can increase school choice access, depending on policy design and contextual factors. 3. Three-dimensional chiral active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model for helical motion of microorganisms

Abstract: Active movement is essential for the survival of microorganisms like bacteria, algae and unicellular parasites, for example the ones causing the disease malaria. In three dimensions, both swimming and gliding microorganisms often exhibit helical trajectories. Here we introduce a stochastic dynamics model for chiral self-propelled particles, for which both propulsion force and torque are internally generated, the latter stochastically by an Ornstein Uhlenbeck process. We demonstrate that a truncated version of the full model can be solved analytically, in very good agreement with computer simulations for the full model. Our main result is that this model allows for larger long-time mean squared displacements for helical compared to straight 3D movement at the same speed, suggesting an evolutionary benefit of the often observed helical movements of microorganisms, and opposite to the reduction of diffusion caused by chirality in 2D. We then provide an experimental example by analyzing imaging data for malaria parasites that glide through hydrogels on helical trajectories., Comment: Revtex, 8 pages, 6 figures

4. Latency Guarantees for Caching with Delayed Hits

Abstract: In the classical caching problem, when a requested page is not present in the cache (i.e., a "miss"), it is assumed to travel from the backing store into the cache "before" the next request arrives. However, in many real-life applications, such as content delivery networks, this assumption is unrealistic. The "delayed-hits" model for caching, introduced by Atre, Sherry, Wang, and Berger, accounts for the latency between a missed cache request and the corresponding arrival from the backing store. This theoretical model has two parameters: the "delay" $Z$, representing the ratio between the retrieval delay and the inter-request delay in an application, and the "cache size" $k$, as in classical caching. Classical caching corresponds to $Z=1$, whereas larger values of $Z$ model applications where retrieving missed requests is expensive. Despite the practical relevance of the delayed-hits model, its theoretical underpinnings are still poorly understood. We present the first tight theoretical guarantee for optimizing delayed-hits caching: The "Least Recently Used" algorithm, a natural, deterministic, online algorithm widely used in practice, is $O(Zk)$-competitive, meaning it incurs at most $O(Zk)$ times more latency than the (offline) optimal schedule. 5. On the Feasibility of Using LLMs to Execute Multistage Network Attacks

Abstract: LLMs have shown preliminary promise in some security tasks and CTF challenges. However, it is unclear whether LLMs are able to realize multistage network attacks, which involve executing a wide variety of actions across multiple hosts such as conducting reconnaissance, exploiting vulnerabilities to gain initial access, leveraging internal hosts to move laterally, and using multiple compromised hosts to exfiltrate data. We evaluate LLMs across 10 multistage networks and find that popular LLMs are unable to realize these attacks. To enable LLMs to realize these attacks, we introduce Incalmo, an LLM-agnostic high-level attack abstraction layer that sits between an LLM and the environment. Rather than LLMs issuing low-level command-line instructions, which can lead to incorrect implementations, Incalmo allows LLMs to specify high-level tasks (e.g., infect a host, scan a network), which are then carried out by Incalmo. Incalmo realizes these tasks by translating them into low-level primitives (e.g., commands to exploit tools). Incalmo also provides an environment state service and an attack graph service to provide structure to LLMs in selecting actions relevant to a multistage attack. Across 9 out of 10 realistic emulated networks (from 25 to 50 hosts), LLMs using Incalmo can successfully autonomously execute multistage attacks. We also conduct an ablation analysis to show the key role the high-level abstractions play. For instance, we find that both Incalmo's high-level tasks and services are crucial. Furthermore, even smaller-parameter LLMs with Incalmo can fully succeed in 5 of 10 environments, while larger-parameter LLMs without Incalmo do not fully succeed in any., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: Benchmarks are important tools for tracking the rapid advancements in large language model (LLM) capabilities. However, benchmarks are not keeping pace in difficulty: LLMs now achieve over 90\% accuracy on popular benchmarks like MMLU, limiting informed measurement of state-of-the-art LLM capabilities. In response, we introduce Humanity's Last Exam (HLE), a multi-modal benchmark at the frontier of human knowledge, designed to be the final closed-ended academic benchmark of its kind with broad subject coverage. HLE consists of 3,000 questions across dozens of subjects, including mathematics, humanities, and the natural sciences. HLE is developed globally by subject-matter experts and consists of multiple-choice and short-answer questions suitable for automated grading. Each question has a known solution that is unambiguous and easily verifiable, but cannot be quickly answered via internet retrieval. State-of-the-art LLMs demonstrate low accuracy and calibration on HLE, highlighting a significant gap between current LLM capabilities and the expert human frontier on closed-ended academic questions. Abstract: The Ultraviolet Explorer (UVEX) is expected to fly in 2030 and will have the opportunity -- and the rapid near/far ultraviolet (UV) capabilities -- to glean unprecedented insight into the bright UV emission present in kilonovae like that of AT 170817gfo, the electromagnetic counterpart to binary neutron star merger GW170817. To do so, it will need to perform prompt target-of-opportunity observations following detection of binary neutron star mergers by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA gravitational observatories. We present initial simulations to develop UVEX target-of-opportunity strategies for such events and provide the community with detailed initial estimates of the prospects for and characteristics of UVEX target-of-opportunity observations following gravitational-wave events, considering fiducial scenarios for the fifth and sixth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing runs. Abstract: Question: What is the performance and reasoning ability of OpenAI o1 compared to other large language models in addressing ophthalmology-specific questions? Findings: This study evaluated OpenAI o1 and five LLMs using 6,990 ophthalmological questions from MedMCQA. O1 achieved the highest accuracy (0.88) and macro-F1 score but ranked third in reasoning capabilities based on text-generation metrics. Across subtopics, o1 ranked first in ``Lens'' and ``Glaucoma'' but second to GPT-4o in ``Corneal and External Diseases'', ``Vitreous and Retina'' and ``Oculoplastic and Orbital Diseases''. Subgroup analyses showed o1 performed better on queries with longer ground truth explanations. Abstract: Continuous gravitational waves (CWs) emission from neutron stars carries information about their internal structure and equation of state, and it can provide tests of General Relativity. We present a search for CWs from a set of 45 known pulsars in the first part of the fourth LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA observing run, known as O4a. We conducted a targeted search for each pulsar using three independent analysis methods considering the single-harmonic and the dual-harmonic emission models. We find no evidence of a CW signal in O4a data for both models and set upper limits on the signal amplitude and on the ellipticity, which quantifies the asymmetry in the neutron star mass distribution. For the single-harmonic emission model, 29 targets have the upper limit on the amplitude below the theoretical spin-down limit. The lowest upper limit on the amplitude is $6.4\!\times\!10^{-27}$ for the young energetic pulsar J0537-6910, while the lowest constraint on the ellipticity is $8.8\!\times\!10^{-9}$ for the bright nearby millisecond pulsar J0437-4715. Additionally, for a subset of 16 targets we performed a narrowband search that is more robust regarding the emission model, with no evidence of a signal. 10. Excess Ultraviolet Emission at High Galactic Latitudes: A New Horizons View

Abstract: We present new observations of the cosmic ultraviolet background (CUVB) at high Galactic latitudes ($|b| > 40^{\circ}$), made using the Alice UV spectrograph on board the New Horizons spacecraft. These observations were taken at about 57 AU from the Sun, outside much of the foreground emission affecting previous missions, and allowed a new determination of the spectrum of the CUVB between 912 -- 1100~\AA\ and 1400 -- 1800~\AA. We found a linear correlation between the CUVB and the Planck E(B~-~V) with offsets at zero-reddening of $221 \pm 11$ photon units at 1000~\AA\ and $264 \pm 24$ \photu\ at 1500~\AA\ ($4.4 \pm 0.2$ nW m$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ at 1000~\AA\ and $5.3 \pm 0.5$ nW m$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ at 1500~\AA). The former is the first firm detection of the offset in the range 912 -- 1100 \AA\ while the latter result confirms previous results from \galex, showing that there is little emission from the Solar System from 1400 -- 1800 \AA. About half of the offset may be explained by known sources (the integrated light of unresolved galaxies, unresolved stars, emission from ionized gas, and two-photon emission from warm hydrogen in the halo) with the source of the remaining emission as yet unidentified. 11. Moduli spaces and breather dynamics of analytic solutions in chiral magnets without Heisenberg exchange interaction

Abstract: We investigate the special case of the chiral magnet with vanishing Heisenberg exchange energy, whose axisymmetric Skyrmion solution has previously been found. The dynamical equations of this model look like inviscid fluid flow, and by investigating path-lines of this flow we can construct explicit static and dynamic solutions. We find an infinite-dimensional family of static Skyrmions that are related to the axisymmetric Skyrmion by co-ordinate transformations thus discovering a new moduli space, and further infinite-dimensional families of axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric breather-like supercompactons. 12. Advanced Attacks On Qubit-Ensemble Based Quantum Coins

Abstract: The ensemble based quantum token protocol allows for implementing non-clonable tokens containing an ensemble of identically prepared qubits. A quantum coin that is issued by a bank can be designed with desired security by adding multiple tokens with ensembles of different orientations. Advanced attacks on the protocol can assume that measurements on sub-ensembles can be carried through and that even individual qubits can be measured. Even though such an attack might be perceived as technically unfeasible we proof the security of the ensemble based protocol under these advanced attacks and provide detailed expression on how the quantum coin must be designed to fulfill desired security requirements. We have used realistic parameters for the IBM Quantum Platform for advanced attacks using brute force optimization. Full MPI parallelized source code is provided to allow for adjusting to other hardware platforms. 13. Spectroscopic footprints of quantum friction in nonreciprocal and chiral media

Abstract: We investigate how the quantum friction experienced by a polarizable atom moving with constant velocity parallel to a planar interface is modified when the latter consists of chiral or nonreciprocal media, with special focus on topological insulators. We use macroscopic quantum electrodynamics to obtain the velocity-dependent Casimir-Polder frequency shift and decay rate. These results are a generalization to matter with time-reversal symmetry breaking. We illustrate our findings by examining the nonretarded and retarded limits for five examples: a perfectly conducting mirror, a perfectly reflecting nonreciprocal mirror, a three-dimensional topological insulator, a perfectly reflecting chiral mirror and an isotropic chiral medium. We find different asymptotic power laws for all these materials. Interestingly, we find two bridges between chirality and nonreciprocity through the frequency shift that arise as a consequence of the magnetoelectric coupling. Namely, the position-dependent Casimir-Polder frequency shift for the nonreciprocal case depend on a geometric magnetic field associated with photoionization of chiral molecules, the Casimir-Polder depending on the velocities for the chiral case have the optical rotatory strength as the atomic response while those for the nonreciprocal case depend on an analog of the optical rotatory strength., Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure, Submitted

14. Picosecond expansion in LaAlO3 resonantly driven by infrared-active phonons

Abstract: We investigate the ultrafast structural dynamics of LaAlO3 thin films driven by short mid-infrared laser pulses at 20 THz. Time-resolved X-ray diffraction reveals an immediate lattice expansion and an acoustic breathing mode of the film. First-principles theory and a spring-mass model identify the direct coupling between coherently driven infrared-active phonons and strain as the underlying mechanism. Time-resolved optical birefringence measurements confirm that the amplitude of this acoustic mode scales linearly with the pump fluence, which agrees with the theory. Furthermore, time-resolved X-ray diffuse scattering indicates that THz excitation enhances crystallinity by inducing a non-thermal increase in structural symmetry originating from preexisting defects. These findings highlight the potential of a multimodal approach-combining time-resolved X-ray and optical measurements and first-principles theory-to elucidate and control structural dynamics in nanoscale materials.

15. Delving into Youth Perspectives on In-game Gambling-like Elements: A Proof-of-Concept Study Utilising Large Language Models for Analysing User-Generated Text Data

Abstract: This report documents the development, test, and application of Large Language Models (LLMs) for automated text analysis, with a specific focus on gambling-like elements in digital games, such as lootboxes. The project aimed not only to analyse user opinions and attitudes towards these mechanics, but also to advance methodological research in text analysis. By employing prompting techniques and iterative prompt refinement processes, the study sought to test and improve the accuracy of LLM-based text analysis. The findings indicate that while LLMs can effectively identify relevant patterns and themes on par with human coders, there are still challenges in handling more complex tasks, underscoring the need for ongoing refinement in methodologies. The methodological advancements achieved through this study significantly enhance the application of LLMs in real-world text analysis. The research provides valuable insights into how these models can be better utilized to analyze complex, user-generated content.

16. Ensemble-Based Quantum-Token Protocol Benchmarked on IBM Quantum Processors

Abstract: Quantum tokens envision to store unclonable authentication keys in quantum states that are issued by a bank for example. In contrast to quantum communication, the information is not transmitted, but rather used for personal authentication in a physical device. Still, its experimental realization faces many technical challenges. In this work, we propose an ensemble-based quantum-token protocol, making these applications technologically less-demanding. A simple and minimal model is developed to describe the quantum token hardware, while the protocol is fully benchmarked and compared on five different IBM quantum processors. First, the uncertainties of the hardware are characterized, from which the main quality parameters that describe the token can be extracted. Following that, the fraction of qubits which the bank prepares and measures successfully is benchmarked. These fractions are then compared with the values obtained from an attacker who attempts to read the bank token and prepare a forged key. From which we experimentally demonstrate an acceptance probability of 0.057 for a forged token, in contrast to 0.999 for the bank's own tokens. These values can be further optimized by increasing the number of tokens in the device. Finally, we show that minor improvements in the hardware quality lead to significant increases in the protocol security, denoting a great potential of the protocol to scale with the ongoing quantum hardware evolution. 17. The Effect of Suspensions on Student Attendance in a High-Absenteeism Urban District

Abstract: I examine the effect of out-of-school suspensions (OSS) on attendance in a large midwestern urban district with high rates of chronic absenteeism. I do so from an ecological perspective and using daily attendance and discipline data. Out-of-school suspension has a modest and persistent negative effect on subsequent attendance, particularly for students who were not chronically absent and in schools with harsher discipline climates. I find not only that reducing OSS rates can improve attendance but also that addressing in-school factors such as OSS alone will not be sufficient for substantially reducing high-absenteeism rates in the context of broader social and economic inequalities.

18. The Teacher's Role in Supporting Young Children's Level of Play Engagement

Abstract: This paper discusses the results of a study of the relationships between teacher behaviour and the level of play engagement in two- and three-year-old children in Dutch childcare centres. We found that the continuous proximity of the teacher had the greatest impact on the level of play engagement, while the teacher's walking around and only brief contacts with the children had a negative impact. In line with earlier studies, two-sided and reciprocal interactions between teacher and children also yielded positive results for play engagement. Both our quantitative and qualitative analyses showed a strong co-variation of variables. When the teacher paid only brief visits, and peers also walked in and out, there was a greater likelihood of one-sided interactions, When the teacher was always nearby, we observed the opposite. Dutch teachers spend most of their time walking around. Their pedagogy seems to be based on a model of individual care and control and insensitiveness of group dynamic processes.

Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality around the world. Despite advances in surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies, the prognosis for patients with metastatic or advanced CRC remains poor. Immunotherapies comprising immune checkpoint inhibitors showed disappointing responses in metastatic CRC (mCRC). However, cellular immunotherapy, specifically using classical dendritic cells (cDCs), may hold unique promise in immune recognition for CRC antigens. cDCs are substantial players in immune recognition and are instrumental in orchestrating innate and adaptive immune responses by processing and presenting tumor antigens to effector cells. Natural killer T (NKT) cells are insufficiently studied but unique effector cells because of their ability to bridge innate and adaptive immune reactions and the crosstalk with dendritic cells in cancer. This review explores the therapeutic potential of using both cDCs and NKT cells as a synergistic therapy in CRC, focusing on their biological roles, strategies for harnessing their capabilities, clinical applications, and the challenges within the tumor microenvironment. Both cDCs and NKT cells can be used as a new effective approach for cell-based therapies in cancers to provide a new hope for CRC patients that are challenging to treat.

20. Operando real-space imaging of a structural phase transformation in the high-voltage electrode LixNi0.5Mn1.5O4.

Abstract: Discontinuous solid-solid phase transformations play a pivotal role in determining the properties of rechargeable battery electrodes. By leveraging operando Bragg Coherent Diffractive Imaging (BCDI), we investigate the discontinuous phase transformation in LixNi0.5Mn1.5O4 within an operational Li metal coin cell. Throughout Li-intercalation, we directly observe the nucleation and growth of the Li-rich phase within the initially charged Li-poor phase in a 500 nm particle. Supported by the microelasticity model, the operando imaging unveils an evolution from a curved coherent to a planar semi-coherent interface driven by dislocation dynamics. Our data indicates negligible kinetic limitations from interface propagation impacting the transformation kinetics, even at a discharge rate of C/2 (80 mA/g). This study highlights BCDIs capability to decode complex operando diffraction data, offering exciting opportunities to study nanoscale phase transformations with various stimuli.

Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major global health issue characterized by poor prognosis and complex tumor biology. One of the critical components of the HCC tumor microenvironment (TME) is tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), which play a pivotal role in modulating tumor growth, immune evasion, and metastasis. Macrophages are divided into two major subtypes: pro-inflammatory M1 and anti-inflammatory M2, both of which may exist in TME with altered function and proportion. The anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages are further subdivided into four distinct immune suppressive subsets. TAMs are generally counted as M2-like macrophages with altered immune suppressive functions that exert a significant influence on both cancer progression and the ability of tumors to escape immune surveillance. Their involvement in modulating immune responses via different mechanisms at the local and systemic levels has made them a key target for therapeutic interventions seeking to enhance treatment outcomes. How TAMs depletion influences immune responses in cancer is the primary interest in cancer immunotherapies. The purpose of this review is to delve into the recent progress made in TAM-targeting therapies. We will explore the current theories, benefits, and challenges associated with TAMs depletion or inhibition. The manuscript concludes with future directions and potential implications for clinical practice.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Patients with lung cancer, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and COPD have high symptom burden, poor quality of life, and high health care use at the end of life. Although proactive integration of palliative care in lung cancer can improve outcomes, it is unclear whether similar practices have been adopted in COPD and IPF care. RESEARCH QUESTION: Do patients with COPD and IPF have different patterns of health care and palliative care use at the end of life compared with patients with lung cancer? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified deceased patients with lung cancer, COPD, or IPF with ≥ 1 outpatient visit at the University of California, San Francisco, in the last 6 months of life. We compared outpatient palliative care and opioid prescriptions, inpatient palliative care, hospitalizations, intensive care use, and in-hospital death in the last 6 months of life between each group. We used multivariable logistic regression to calculate adjusted ORs (aORs) of each outcome, with lung cancer as the reference group. RESULTS: Among 1,819 patients, patients with COPD and IPF were more likely to be male and older at the time of death compared with patients with lung cancer. Compared with patients with lung cancer, patients with COPD and IPF showed a lower adjusted odds (P < .001) of receiving outpatient palliative care (COPD: aOR, 0.26 [95% CI, 0.19-0.36]; IPF: aOR, 0.48 [95% CI, 0.32-0.70]), outpatient opioid prescription (COPD: aOR, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.40-0.63]; IPF: aOR, 0.40 [95% CI, 0.29-0.54]), and a higher odds of end-of-life ICU use (COPD: aOR, 2.88 [95% CI, 2.11-3.93]; IPF: aOR, 4.15 [95% CI, 2.66-6.49]). Patients with IPF showed higher odds of receiving inpatient palliative care (aOR: 2.02 [95% CI, 1.30-3.13]; P = .002). INTERPRETATION: This study showed that patients with COPD and IPF are less likely to receive outpatient palliative care and opioid prescriptions and are more likely to use end-of-life intensive care than patients with lung cancer. Further research should explore health system barriers contributing to differences in care patterns to optimize quality of life and to align with patient goals of care.

Despite these challenges, recent advancements in methanotroph engineering demonstrate great promise, showcasing these C1-carbon-utilizing microbes as prospective hosts for bioproduction. Abstract: We consider the problem of finding an independent set of maximum weight simultaneously contained in $k$ matroids over a common ground set. This $k$-matroid intersection problem appears naturally in many contexts, for example in generalizing graph and hypergraph matching problems. In this paper, we provide a $(k+1)/(2 \ln 2)$-approximation algorithm for the weighted $k$-matroid intersection problem. This is the first improvement over the longstanding $(k-1)$-guarantee of Lee, Sviridenko and Vondr\'ak (2009). Along the way, we also give the first improvement over greedy for the more general weighted matroid $k$-parity problem. Our key innovation lies in a randomized reduction in which we solve almost unweighted instances iteratively. This perspective allows us to use insights from the unweighted problem for which Lee, Sviridenko, and Vondr\'ak have designed a $k/2$-approximation algorithm. 26. Streaming Algorithms via Local Algorithms for Maximum Directed Cut

Abstract: We explore the use of local algorithms in the design of streaming algorithms for the Maximum Directed Cut problem. Specifically, building on the local algorithm of Buchbinder et al. (FOCS'12) and Censor-Hillel et al. (ALGOSENSORS'17), we develop streaming algorithms for both adversarially and randomly ordered streams that approximate the value of maximum directed cut in bounded-degree graphs. In $n$-vertex graphs, for adversarially ordered streams, our algorithm uses $O(n^{1-\Omega(1)})$ (sub-linear) space and for randomly ordered streams, our algorithm uses logarithmic space. Moreover, both algorithms require only one pass over the input stream. With a constant number of passes, we give a logarithmic-space algorithm which works even on graphs with unbounded degree on adversarially ordered streams. Our algorithms achieve any fixed constant approximation factor less than $\frac12$. In the single-pass setting, this is tight: known lower bounds show that obtaining any constant approximation factor greater than $\frac12$ is impossible without using linear space in adversarially ordered streams (Kapralov and Krachun, STOC'19) and $\Omega(\sqrt{n})$ space in randomly ordered streams, even on bounded degree graphs (Kapralov, Khanna, and Sudan, SODA'15). In terms of techniques, our algorithms partition the vertices into a small number of different types based on the structure of their local neighborhood, ensuring that each type carries enough information about the structure to approximately simulate the local algorithm on a vertex with that type. We then develop tools to accurately estimate the frequency of each type. 27. Unified Semantic Log Parsing and Causal Graph Construction for Attack Attribution

Abstract: Multi-source logs provide a comprehensive overview of ongoing system activities, allowing for in-depth analysis to detect potential threats. A practical approach for threat detection involves explicit extraction of entity triples (subject, action, object) towards building provenance graphs to facilitate the analysis of system behavior. However, current log parsing methods mainly focus on retrieving parameters and events from raw logs while approaches based on entity extraction are limited to processing a single type of log. To address these gaps, we contribute with a novel unified framework, coined UTLParser. UTLParser adopts semantic analysis to construct causal graphs by merging multiple sub-graphs from individual log sources in labeled log dataset. It leverages domain knowledge in threat hunting such as Points of Interest. We further explore log generation delays and provide interfaces for optimized temporal graph querying. Our experiments showcase that UTLParser overcomes drawbacks of other log parsing methods. Furthermore, UTLParser precisely extracts explicit causal threat information while being compatible with enormous downstream tasks.

28. OSPtrack: A Labeled Dataset Targeting Simulated Execution of Open-Source Software

Abstract: Open-source software serves as a foundation for the internet and the cyber supply chain, but its exploitation is becoming increasingly prevalent. While advances in vulnerability detection for OSS have been significant, prior research has largely focused on static code analysis, often neglecting runtime indicators. To address this shortfall, we created a comprehensive dataset spanning five ecosystems, capturing features generated during the execution of packages and libraries in isolated environments. The dataset includes 9,461 package reports, of which 1,962 are identified as malicious, and encompasses both static and dynamic features such as files, sockets, commands, and DNS records. Each report is labeled with verified information and detailed sub-labels for attack types, facilitating the identification of malicious indicators when source code is unavailable. This dataset supports runtime detection, enhances detection model training, and enables efficient comparative analysis across ecosystems, contributing to the strengthening of supply chain security.

29. Oblivious Algorithms for Maximum Directed Cut: New Upper and Lower Bounds

Abstract: In the maximum directed cut problem, the input is a directed graph $G=(V,E)$, and the goal is to pick a partition $V = S \cup (V \setminus S)$ of the vertices such that as many edges as possible go from $S$ to $V\setminus S$. Oblivious algorithms, introduced by Feige and Jozeph (Algorithmica'17), are a simple class of algorithms for this problem. These algorithms independently and randomly assign each vertex $v$ to either $S$ or $V \setminus S$, and the distribution of $v$'s assignment is determined using only extremely local information about $v$: its bias, i.e., the relative difference between its out- and in-degrees. These algorithms have natural implementations in certain graph streaming models, where they have important implications (Saxena, Singer, Sudan, and Velusamy, SODA'23, FOCS'23, Kallaugher, Parekh, and Voronova, STOC'24). In this work, we narrow the gap between upper and lower bounds on the best approximation ratio achievable by oblivious algorithms for Max-Directed-Cut. We show that there exists an oblivious algorithm achieving an approximation ratio of at least $0.4853$, while every oblivious algorithm obeying a natural symmetry property achieves an approximation ratio of at most $0.4889$. The previous known bounds were $0.4844$ and $0.4899$, due to Singer (APPROX'23) and Feige and Jozeph, respectively. 31. In silico discovery of representational relationships across visual cortex

Abstract: Human vision is mediated by a complex interconnected network of cortical brain areas jointly representing visual information. While these areas are increasingly understood in isolation, their representational relationships remain elusive. Here we developed relational neural control (RNC), and used it to investigate the representational relationships for univariate and multivariate fMRI responses of early- and mid-level visual areas. RNC generated and explored in silico fMRI responses for large amounts of images, discovering controlling images that align or disentangle responses across areas, thus indicating their shared or unique representational content. A large portion of representational content was shared across areas, unique representational content increased with cortical distance, and we isolated the visual features determining these effects. Closing the empirical cycle, we validated the in silico discoveries on in vivo fMRI responses from independent subjects. Together, this reveals how visual areas jointly represent the world as an interconnected network.

32. Coboundary expansion inside Chevalley coset complex HDXs

Abstract: Recent major results in property testing~\cite{BLM24,DDL24} and PCPs~\cite{BMV24} were unlocked by moving to high-dimensional expanders (HDXs) constructed from $\widetilde{C}_d$-type buildings, rather than the long-known $\widetilde{A}_d$-type ones. At the same time, these building quotient HDXs are not as easy to understand as the more elementary (and more symmetric/explicit) \emph{coset complex} HDXs constructed by Kaufman--Oppenheim~\cite{KO18} (of $A_d$-type) and O'Donnell--Pratt~\cite{OP22} (of $B_d$-, $C_d$-, $D_d$-type). Motivated by these considerations, we study the $B_3$-type generalization of a recent work of Kaufman--Oppenheim~\cite{KO21}, which showed that the $A_3$-type coset complex HDXs have good $1$-coboundary expansion in their links, and thus yield $2$-dimensional topological expanders. The crux of Kaufman--Oppenheim's proof of $1$-coboundary expansion was: (1)~identifying a group-theoretic result by Biss and Dasgupta~\cite{BD01} on small presentations for the $A_3$-unipotent group over~$\mathbb{F}_q$; (2)~``lifting'' it to an analogous result for an $A_3$-unipotent group over polynomial extensions~$\mathbb{F}_q[x]$. For our $B_3$-type generalization, the analogue of~(1) appears to not hold. We manage to circumvent this with a significantly more involved strategy: (1)~getting a computer-assisted proof of vanishing $1$-cohomology of $B_3$-type unipotent groups over~$\mathbb{F}_5$; (2)~developing significant new ``lifting'' technology to deduce the required quantitative $1$-cohomology results in $B_3$-type unipotent groups over $\mathbb{F}_{5^k}[x]$., Comment: 130 pages

Abstract: We present flux measurements of Uranus observed at phase angles of 43.9{\deg}, 44.0{\deg}, and 52.4{\deg} by the Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) on the New Horizons spacecraft during 2023, 2010, and 2019, respectively. New Horizons imaged Uranus at a distance of about 24-70 AU (2023) in four color filters, with bandpasses of 400-550 nm, 540-700 nm, 780-975 nm, and 860-910 nm. High-phase-angle observations are of interest for studying the energy balance of Uranus, constraining the atmospheric scattering behavior, and understanding the planet as an analog for ice giant exoplanets. The new observations from New Horizons provide access to a wider wavelength range and different season compared to previous observations from both Voyager spacecraft. We performed aperture photometry on the New Horizons observations of Uranus to obtain its brightness in each photometric band. The photometry suggests that Uranus may be darker than predicted by a Lambertian phase curve in the Blue and Red filters. Comparison to simultaneous low-phase Hubble WFC3 and ground-based community-led observations indicates a lack of large-scale features at full-phase that would introduce variation in the rotational light curve. The New Horizons reflectance in the Blue (492 nm) and Red (624 nm) filters does not exhibit statistically significant variation and is consistent with the expected error bars. These results place new constraints on the atmospheric model of Uranus and its reflectivity. The observations are analogous to those from future exoplanet direct-imaging missions, which will capture unresolved images of exoplanets at partial phases. A limitation of this method was that some prior information had to be provided by the user on the number and locations of the reflective boundaries, and that its neural networks had to be re-trained accordingly for different environments. Utilizing more advanced neural network and time delay estimation techniques, the proposed improved method no longer requires prior knowledge the number of boundaries or their locations, and is able to estimate two-dimensional environments with one or two boundaries. Future work will extend the proposed method to more boundaries and larger-scale environments.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. Abstract: Cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) is a widely-used technique for recovering the 3-D structure of biological molecules from a large number of experimentally generated noisy 2-D tomographic projection images of the 3-D structure, taken from unknown viewing angles. Through computationally intensive algorithms, these observed images are processed to reconstruct the 3-D structures. Many popular computational methods rely on estimating the unknown angles as part of the reconstruction process, which becomes particularly challenging at low signal-to-noise ratio. The method of moments (MoM) offers an alternative approach that circumvents the estimation of viewing angles of individual projection images by instead estimating the underlying distribution of the viewing angles, and is robust to noise given sufficiently many images. However, the method of moments typically entails computing high-order moments of the projection images, incurring significant storage and computational costs. To mitigate this, we propose a new approach called the subspace method of moments (subspace MoM), which compresses the first three moments using data-driven low-rank tensor techniques as well as expansion into a suitable function basis. The compressed moments can be efficiently computed from the set of projection images using numerical quadrature and can be employed to jointly recover the 3-D structure and the distribution of viewing angles. We illustrate the practical applicability of the subspace MoM in numerical experiments using up to the third-order moment, which significantly improves the resolution of MoM reconstructions compared to previous approaches.

38. Swiftly chasing gravitational waves across the sky in real-time

Abstract: We introduce a new capability of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, dubbed `continuous commanding,' achieving 10 seconds latency response time on-orbit to unscheduled Target of Opportunity requests. This allows Swift to respond to early warning gravitational-wave detections, rapidly slewing the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) across the sky to place the GW origin in the BAT field of view at merger time. This will dramatically increase the GW/GRB co-detection rate, and enable prompt arcminute localization of a neutron star merger. We simulate the full Swift response to a GW early warning alert, including input sky maps produced at different warning times, a complete model of Swift's attitude control system, and a full accounting of the latency between the GW detectors and the spacecraft. 60 s of early warning doubles the rate of prompt GRB detections with arcminute position, and 140 s guarantees observation anywhere on the unocculted sky, even with localization areas >> 1000 deg$^2$. While 140 s is beyond current gravitational wave detector sensitivities, 30-70 s is achievable today. We show that the detection yield is now limited by the latency of LIGO/Virgo cyber-infrastructure, and motivate focus on its reduction. Continuous commanding is now a general capability of Swift, significantly increasing its versatility in response to the growing demands of time-domain astrophysics. We demonstrate this potential on an externally triggered Fast Radio Burst, slewing 81 degrees across the sky, and collecting X-ray and UV photons from the source position < 150 s after the trigger was received from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), thereby setting the earliest and deepest such constraints on high energy activity from non-repeating FRBs. 39. Language Enhanced Model for Eye (LEME): An Open-Source Ophthalmology-Specific Large Language Model

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) are poised to revolutionize healthcare. Ophthalmology-specific LLMs remain scarce and underexplored. We introduced an open-source, specialized LLM for ophthalmology, termed Language Enhanced Model for Eye (LEME). LEME was initially pre-trained on the Llama2 70B framework and further fine-tuned with a corpus of ~127,000 non-copyrighted training instances curated from ophthalmology-specific case reports, abstracts, and open-source study materials. We benchmarked LEME against eight other LLMs, namely, GPT-3.5, GPT-4, three Llama2 models (7B, 13B, 70B), PMC-LLAMA 13B, Meditron 70B, and EYE-Llama (another ophthalmology-specific LLM). Evaluations included four internal validation tasks: abstract completion, fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice questions (MCQ), and short-answer QA. External validation tasks encompassed long-form QA, MCQ, patient EHR summarization, and clinical QA. Evaluation metrics included Rouge-L scores, accuracy, and expert evaluation of correctness, completeness, and readability. In internal validations, LEME consistently outperformed its counterparts, achieving Rouge-L scores of 0.20 in abstract completion (all p<0.05), 0.82 in fill-in-the-blank (all p<0.0001), and 0.22 in short-answer QA (all p<0.0001, except versus GPT-4). In external validations, LEME excelled in long-form QA with a Rouge-L of 0.19 (all p<0.0001), ranked second in MCQ accuracy (0.68; all p<0.0001), and scored highest in EHR summarization and clinical QA (ranging from 4.24 to 4.83 out of 5 for correctness, completeness, and readability). LEME's emphasis on robust fine-tuning and the use of non-copyrighted data represents a breakthrough in open-source ophthalmology-specific LLMs, offering the potential to revolutionize execution of clinical tasks while democratizing research collaboration.

40. Enhancing Large Language Models with Domain-specific Retrieval Augment Generation: A Case Study on Long-form Consumer Health Question Answering in Ophthalmology

Abstract: Despite the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) in medicine, they may generate responses lacking supporting evidence or based on hallucinated evidence. While Retrieval Augment Generation (RAG) is popular to address this issue, few studies implemented and evaluated RAG in downstream domain-specific applications. We developed a RAG pipeline with 70,000 ophthalmology-specific documents that retrieve relevant documents to augment LLMs during inference time. In a case study on long-form consumer health questions, we systematically evaluated the responses including over 500 references of LLMs with and without RAG on 100 questions with 10 healthcare professionals. The evaluation focuses on factuality of evidence, selection and ranking of evidence, attribution of evidence, and answer accuracy and completeness. LLMs without RAG provided 252 references in total. Of which, 45.3% hallucinated, 34.1% consisted of minor errors, and 20.6% were correct. In contrast, LLMs with RAG significantly improved accuracy (54.5% being correct) and reduced error rates (18.8% with minor hallucinations and 26.7% with errors). 62.5% of the top 10 documents retrieved by RAG were selected as the top references in the LLM response, with an average ranking of 4.9. The use of RAG also improved evidence attribution (increasing from 1.85 to 2.49 on a 5-point scale, P<0.001), albeit with slight decreases in accuracy (from 3.52 to 3.23, P=0.03) and completeness (from 3.47 to 3.27, P=0.17). The results demonstrate that LLMs frequently exhibited hallucinated and erroneous evidence in the responses, raising concerns for downstream applications in the medical domain. RAG substantially reduced the proportion of such evidence but encountered challenges.

41. The Impact of Large Language Models on Open-source Innovation: Evidence from GitHub Copilot

Abstract: Generative AI (GenAI) has been shown to enhance individual productivity in a guided setting. While it is also likely to transform processes in a collaborative work setting, it is unclear what trajectory this transformation will follow. Collaborative environment is characterized by a blend of origination tasks that involve building something from scratch and iteration tasks that involve refining on others' work. Whether GenAI affects these two aspects of collaborative work and to what extent is an open empirical question. We study this question within the open-source development landscape, a prime example of collaborative innovation, where contributions are voluntary and unguided. Specifically, we focus on the launch of GitHub Copilot in October 2021 and leverage a natural experiment in which GitHub Copilot (a programming-focused LLM) selectively rolled out support for Python, but not for R. We observe a significant jump in overall contributions, suggesting that GenAI effectively augments collaborative innovation in an unguided setting. Interestingly, Copilot's launch increased maintenance-related contributions, which are mostly iterative tasks involving building on others' work, significantly more than code-development contributions, which are mostly origination tasks involving standalone contributions. This disparity was exacerbated in active projects with extensive coding activity, raising concerns that, as GenAI models improve to accommodate richer context, the gap between origination and iterative solutions may widen. 42. Development of TiN/AlN-based superconducting qubit components

Abstract: This paper presents the fabrication and characterization of superconducting qubit components from titanium nitride (TiN) and aluminum nitride (AlN) layers to create Josephson junctions and superconducting resonators in an all-nitride architecture. Our methodology comprises a complete process flow for the fabrication of TiN/AlN/TiN junctions, characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), ellipsometry and DC electrical measurements. We evaluated the sputtering rates of AlN under varied conditions, the critical temperatures of TiN thin films for different sputtering environments, and the internal quality factors of TiN resonators in the few-GHz regime, fabricated from these films. Overall, this offered insights into the material properties critical to qubit performance. Measurements of the dependence of the critical current of the TiN / AlN / TiN junctions yielded values ranging from 150 ${\mu}$A to 2 ${\mu}$A, for AlN barrier thicknesses up to ca. 5 nm, respectively. Our findings demonstrate advances in the fabrication of nitride-based superconducting qubit components, which may find applications in quantum computing technologies based on novel materials.

43. Tantalum thin films sputtered on silicon and on different seed layers: material characterization and coplanar waveguide resonator performance

Abstract: Superconducting qubits are a promising platform for large-scale quantum computing. Besides the Josephson junction, most parts of a superconducting qubit are made of planar, patterned superconducting thin films. In the past, most qubit architectures have relied on niobium (Nb) as the material of choice for the superconducting layer. However, there is also a variety of alternative materials with potentially less losses, which may thereby result in increased qubit performance. One such material is tantalum (Ta), for which high-performance qubit components have already been demonstrated. In this study, we report the sputter-deposition of Ta thin films directly on heated and unheated silicon (Si) substrates as well as onto different, nanometer-thin seed layers from tantalum nitride (TaN), titanium nitride (TiN) or aluminum nitride (AlN) that were deposited first. The thin films are characterized in terms of surface morphology, crystal structure, phase composition, critical temperature, residual resistance ratio (RRR) and RF-performance. We obtain thin films indicative of pure alpha-Ta for high temperature (600{\deg}C) sputtering directly on silicon and for Ta deposited on TaN or TiN seed layers. Coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonator measurements show that the Ta deposited directly on the heated silicon substrate performs best with internal quality factors $Q_i$ reaching 1 x $10^6$ in the single-photon regime, measured at $T=100 {\space \rm mK}$.

Abstract: The discovery of superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure has motivated the investigation of a parent spin density wave (SDW) state which could provide the underlying pairing interaction. Here, we employ resonant soft x-ray scattering and polarimetry on thin films of bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ to determine that the magnetic structure of the SDW forms unidirectional diagonal spin stripes with moments lying within the NiO$_2$ plane and perpendicular to $\mathbf{Q}_{SDW}$, but without the strong charge disproportionation typically associated with other nickelates. These stripes form anisotropic domains with shorter correlation lengths perpendicular versus parallel to $\mathbf{Q}_{SDW}$, revealing nanoscale rotational and translational symmetry breaking analogous to the cuprate and Fe-based superconductors, with Bloch-like antiferromagnetic domain walls separating orthogonal domains., Comment: 30 pages including supplementary, 4 figures + 9 supplementary figures

46. Reflective Questions Effectively Measure Impact, Stimulate Content Integration, and Support Future Planning

Abstract: We share a case study on our use of three reflective questions to demonstrate ways in which simple questions can be coded to reveal rich evidence of impact and engagement. At the end of a three-hour inclusive teaching practices workshop for 23 faculty and administrators from a single science department, 22 participants completed an anonymous three-question survey. Simple coding techniques facilitated a thorough evaluation of knowledge acquisition, the integration of new content with current knowledge, the robustness of individual plans for implementing changes, and the identification of potential departmental future actions.

47. Speech and Language Therapists' Perceptions of Contextual Factors Associated with Communicative Participation in Children with Developmental Language Disorders

Abstract: Children with developmental language disorders (DLDs) may experience barriers to communicative participation. Communicative participation is defined as 'participation in life situations in which knowledge, information, ideas or feelings are exchanged'. Barriers experienced in communicative participation cannot be explained by language competence alone and are thought to be influenced by contextual factors. A better understanding of these factors will contribute to tailored speech and language therapy services for children with DLD. We conducted a focus group study with 13 speech and language therapists' (SLTs) to explore their perspectives on contextual (environmental and personal) factors in early childhood that are associated with communicative participation in children with DLD. The personal factor of child well-being, and the environmental factors of familial support and SLT service provision were developed through thematic analysis. The potential mediating role of these factors on communicative participation implies that it is important to address contextual barriers and facilitators in speech and language therapy services.

48. Complicating the Role of Relationships in Reducing Student Absenteeism

Abstract: A strong connection between schools and families is vital for student success and well-being. Previous studies on school-family relationships found that open communication between parties may aid in supporting students' needs and ability to attend school. In this paper, authors analyze how leveraging relationships to gain an increased understanding of a family's attendance barriers is more beneficial than relationships built on accountability. From interviews with 38 caregivers, 29 students, and 40 staff members in an urban school district with high rates of chronic absenteeism, authors found that efforts to build relationships with families focused on accountability and caregiver education about their children's attendance and the importance of attending school. Families sometimes perceived these efforts as superficial and ineffective. Authors discuss how school districts and key school personnel, such as social workers, can intentionally use the power of relationships to identify student and family needs and connect them with resources.

50. First-Year Design Projects and Student Perceptions of the Role of an Engineer

Abstract: Contribution: This article provides an examination of changes in first-year engineering students' perceptions of the role of an engineer after completing the Engineers Without Borders Challenge. Background: Essential pre- and post-comparisons missing in existing studies on the Challenge are provided, as well as comparison to other first-year project types across two universities. Research Question: Do students who participate in service-learning versus traditional project-based learning gain different understandings of the role of an engineer? Methodology: This work implements the questionnaire variant of convergent mixed methods design. A survey containing a mix of Likert-scale, open-ended short answer, and closed card sorting questions was administered to students enrolled in first-year engineering (FYE) courses across two institutions. Limitations of this work include potential bias due to the pre/post survey design and participant course self-selection. Findings: Students' perceptions of the roles of engineers did not significantly differ by project type. However, changes in their perceptions of technical skills as important to the role of engineers did indicate the beginning of a transition from discipline level thinking to process level thinking. Additionally, course learning objectives influenced students' perceptions of the role of engineers--with an increase in awareness of the importance of problem solving, communication, design process, and teamwork and a decreasing sense of importance of items missing from course objectives, such as creativity and helping people. Engineers' professional responsibility to diversity, equity, and inclusion were absent from both the course syllabi and student perceptions of the role of an engineer.
