With the advent of the Heliophysics/Geospace System Observatory (H/GSO), a complement of multi-spacecraft missions and ground-based observatories to study the space environment, data retrieval, analysis, and visualization of space physics data can be daunting. The Space Physics Environment Data Analysis System (SPEDAS), a grass-roots software development platform (www.spedas.org), is now officially supported by NASA Heliophysics as part of its data environment infrastructure. It serves more than a dozen space missions and ground observatories and can integrate the full complement of past and upcoming space physics missions with minimal resources, following clear, simple, and well-proven guidelines. Free, modular and configurable to the needs of individual missions, it works in both command-line (ideal for experienced users) and Graphical User Interface (GUI) mode (reducing the learning curve for first-time users). Both options have "crib-sheets," user-command sequences in ASCII format that can facilitate record-and-repeat actions, especially for complex operations and plotting. Crib-sheets enhance scientific interactions, as users can move rapidly and accurately from exchanges of technical information on data processing to efficient discussions regarding data interpretation and science. SPEDAS can readily query and ingest all International Solar Terrestrial Physics (ISTP)-compatible products from the Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF), enabling access to a vast collection of historic and current mission data. The planned incorporation of Heliophysics Application Programmer's Interface (HAPI) standards will facilitate data ingestion from distributed datasets that adhere to these standards. Although SPEDAS is currently Interactive Data Language (IDL)-based (and interfaces to Java-based tools such as Autoplot), efforts are under-way to expand it further to work with python (first as an interface tool and potentially even receiving an under-the-hood replacement). We review the SPEDAS development history, goals, and current implementation. We explain its "modes of use" with examples geared for users and outline its technical implementation and requirements with software developers in mind. We also describe SPEDAS personnel and software management, interfaces with other organizations, resources and support structure available to the community, and future development plans.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (10.1007/s11214-018-0576-4) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

We report global observations of high-m poloidal waves during the recovery phase of the 22 June 2015 magnetic storm from a constellation of widely spaced satellites of five missions including Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS), Van Allen Probes, Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorm (THEMIS), Cluster, and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES). The combined observations demonstrate the global spatial extent of storm time poloidal waves. MMS observations confirm high azimuthal wave numbers (m ~ 100). Mode identification indicates the waves are associated with the second harmonic of field line resonances. The wave frequencies exhibit a decreasing trend as L increases, distinguishing them from the single-frequency global poloidal modes normally observed during quiet times. Detailed examination of the instantaneous frequency reveals discrete spatial structures with step-like frequency changes along L. Each discrete L shell has a steady wave frequency and spans about 1 RE , suggesting that there exist a discrete number of drift-bounce resonance regions across L shells during storm times.

We report on field-aligned current observations by the four Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft near the plasma sheet boundary layer (PSBL) during two major substorms on 23 June 2015. Small-scale field-aligned currents were found embedded in fluctuating PSBL flux tubes near the separatrix region. We resolve, for the first time, short-lived earthward (downward) intense field-aligned current sheets with thicknesses of a few tens of kilometers, which are well below the ion scale, on flux tubes moving equatorward/earthward during outward plasma sheet expansion. They coincide with upward field-aligned electron beams with energies of a few hundred eV. These electrons are most likely due to acceleration associated with a reconnection jet or high-energy ion beam-produced disturbances. The observations highlight coupling of multiscale processes in PSBL as a consequence of magnetotail reconnection.

Strong enhancements of outer Van Allen belt electrons have been shown to have a clear dependence on solar wind speed and on the duration of southward interplanetary magnetic field. However, individual case study analyses also have demonstrated that many geomagnetic storms produce little in the way of outer belt enhancements and, in fact, may produce substantial losses of relativistic electrons. In this study, focused upon a key period in August-September 2014, we use GOES geostationary orbit electron flux data and Van Allen Probes particle and fields data to study the process of radiation belt electron acceleration. One particular interval, 13-22 September, initiated by a short-lived geomagnetic storm and characterized by a long period of primarily northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), showed strong depletion of relativistic electrons (including an unprecedented observation of long-lasting depletion at geostationary orbit) while an immediately preceding, and another immediately subsequent, storm showed strong radiation belt enhancement. We demonstrate with these data that two distinct electron populations resulting from magnetospheric substorm activity are crucial elements in the ultimate acceleration of highly relativistic electrons in the outer belt: the source population (tens of keV) that give rise to VLF wave growth and the seed population (hundreds of keV) that are, in turn, accelerated through VLF wave interactions to much higher energies. ULF waves may also play a role by either inhibiting or enhancing this process through radial diffusion effects. If any components of the inner magnetospheric accelerator happen to be absent, the relativistic radiation belt enhancement fails to materialize. Lipedema is a painful loose connective tissue disorder characterized by a bilaterally symmetrical fat deposition in the lower extremities. The goal of this study was to characterize the adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) of healthy and lipedema patients by the expression of stemness markers and the adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation potential. Forty patients, 20 healthy and 20 with lipedema, participated in this study. The stromal vascular fraction (SVF) was obtained from subcutaneous thigh (SVF-T) and abdomen (SVF-A) fat and plated for ASCs characterization. The data show a similar expression of mesenchymal markers, a significant increase in colonies ( p < 0.05) and no change in the proliferation rate in ASCs isolated from the SVF-T or SVF-A of lipedema patients compared with healthy patients. The leptin gene expression was significantly increased in lipedema adipocytes differentiated from ASCs-T ( p = 0.04) and the PPAR-γ expression was significantly increased in lipedema adipocytes differentiated from ASCs-A ( p = 0.03) compared to the corresponding cells from healthy patients. No significant changes in the expression of genes associated with inflammation were detected in lipedema ASCs or differentiated adipocytes. These results suggest that lipedema ASCs isolated from SVF-T and SVF-A have a higher adipogenic differentiation potential compared to healthy ASCs., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

We present characteristics of current layers in the off-equatorial near-Earth plasma sheet boundary observed with high time-resolution measurements from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission during an intense substorm associated with multiple dipolarizations. The four Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft, separated by distances of about 50 km, were located in the southern hemisphere in the dusk portion of a substorm current wedge. They observed fast flow disturbances (up to about 500 km/s), most intense in the dawn-dusk direction. Field-aligned currents were observed initially within the expanding plasma sheet, where the flow and field disturbances showed the distinct pattern expected in the braking region of localized flows. Subsequently, intense thin field-aligned current layers were detected at the inner boundary of equatorward moving flux tubes together with Earthward streaming hot ions. Intense Hall current layers were found adjacent to the field-aligned currents. In particular, we found a Hall current structure in the vicinity of the Earthward streaming ion jet that consisted of mixed ion components, that is, hot unmagnetized ions, cold E × B drifting ions, and magnetized electrons. Our observations show that both the near-Earth plasma jet diversion and the thin Hall current layers formed around the reconnection jet boundary are the sites where diversion of the perpendicular currents take place that contribute to the observed field-aligned current pattern as predicted by simulations of reconnection jets. Hence, multiscale structure of flow braking is preserved in the field-aligned currents in the off-equatorial plasma sheet and is also translated to ionosphere to become a part of the substorm field-aligned current system.

We report on the large-scale evolution of dipolarization in the near-Earth plasma sheet during an intense (AL ~ -1000 nT) substorm on August 10, 2016, when multiple spacecraft at radial distances between 4 and 15 R E were present in the night-side magnetosphere. This global dipolarization consisted of multiple short-timescale (a couple of minutes) B z disturbances detected by spacecraft distributed over 9 MLT, consistent with the large-scale substorm current wedge observed by ground-based magnetometers. The four spacecraft of the Magnetospheric Multiscale were located in the southern hemisphere plasma sheet and observed fast flow disturbances associated with this dipolarization. The high-time-resolution measurements from MMS enable us to detect the rapid motion of the field structures and flow disturbances separately. A distinct pattern of the flow and field disturbance near the plasma boundaries was found. We suggest that a vortex motion created around the localized flows resulted in another field-aligned current system at the off-equatorial side of the BBF-associated R1/R2 systems, as was predicted by the MHD simulation of a localized reconnection jet. The observations by GOES and Geotail, which were located in the opposite hemisphere and local time, support this view. We demonstrate that the processes of both Earthward flow braking and of accumulated magnetic flux evolving tailward also control the dynamics in the boundary region of the near-Earth plasma sheet.Graphical AbstractMultispacecraft observations of dipolarization ( left panel ). Almost all U.S. hospitals procure their equipment through group purchasing organizations ("GPOs"). Some hospitals subject the prices secured by GPOs to a second round of competition in an "aftermarket," in which vendors both on and off the GPO contract compete for the hospital's business. To measure the extent of the potential benefit to hospitals from another round of competition, we analyzed a database of approximately 8,100 aftermarket transactions for hospital capital equipment. The transactions data suggest that hospitals were able to achieve average savings of approximately 10 to 14 percent across the entire database (2001 through 2010) and a savings of 15 percent on average for 2010 data. These savings may be attributable to many factors, including the compensation structure of GPOs.

Proposed legislation seeks to impose price transparency in the heath care industry as a remedy for increasing medical device prices. This paper analyzes previous attempts to mandate similar price-disclosure rules in a variety of industries. We identify the economic conditions under which mandatory price disclosure is likely to generate substantial benefits and costs. Applying these conditions, we conclude that mandatory price disclosure for implantable devices is unlikely to pass a benefit-cost test.

A phage-resistant mutant of Staphylococcus aureus H (Sm(R)), S. aureus 52A5, was previously shown to lack polymeric teichoic acid. This paper characterizes other phenotypic differences between the strains. In broth cultures the mutant cells grew more slowly, were larger, and formed much larger clumps than the parent strain. The clumps of cells appeared to be covalently linked and could only be separated by mild sonic energy-a process which yielded viable cells. Mutant and parent cells autolyzed at equal rates, whereas isolated cell walls of the mutant strain autolyzed faster than the wild type. Nevertheless, the specific activity of the autolytic enzyme in the wild type soluble fraction was much higher than in the mutant. In contrast to the parent, strain 52A5 failed to accumulate nucleotide-bound murein precursors when treated with penicillin. Mutant strains with these characteristics were repeatedly isolated both spontaneously and by chemical mutagenesis. Strain 52A5 was shown to be fully revertible. Thus, it appears to be a pleiotropic mutation, and the possible nature of the defect which causes these varied effects is discussed.

The principal autolytic enzyme activity of the cell sap of Staphylococcus aureus H has been purified 400-fold. It is an N-acetylmuramyl-l-alanine amidase. This enzyme has a molecular weight of 8 to 10 x 10(5), a pH optimum of 7.3, an ionic strength optimum of 0.16 m and a K(m) of 10(-3)m murein repeating units.

Staphylococcus aureus strain H has an autolytic activity which can be found in the cell wall but is most easily obtained from high-speed supernatant fractions of broken-cell preparations. As measured either turbidimetrically or radioactively, this activity is much greater on murein extracted from penicillin-treated cells than on murein extracted from normal cells.
