Abstract

Approximately one-third of all mammalian genes are essential for life. Phenotypes resulting from knockouts of these genes in mice have provided tremendous insight into gene function and congenital disorders. As part of the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium effort to generate and phenotypically characterize 5,000 knockout mouse lines, here we identify 410 lethal genes during the production of the first 1,751 unique gene knockouts. Using a standardized phenotyping platform that incorporates high-resolution 3D imaging, we identify phenotypes at multiple time points for previously uncharacterized genes and additional phenotypes for genes with previously reported mutant phenotypes. Unexpectedly, our analysis reveals that incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity are common even on a defined genetic background. In addition, we show that human disease genes are enriched for essential genes, thus providing a dataset that facilitates the prioritization and validation of mutations identified in clinical sequencing efforts.

5. Movement and Movement Patterns of Early Childhood.

Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine the progressive development in movement and movement patterns (coordinated movements of body parts used involuntarily to achieve an objective) of children 2- to 6-years-old, to identify general characteristics which may be studied for appraisal of growth and development, and to study variations in movement among normal subjects in this age range. The study was conducted by observation, motion photography, and analysis of the performance of subjects in 18 to 25 movement tasks in each of six school semesters. Movement performance recorded on film was analyzed according to the Movement Task Analysis Form developed for each task. To establish a suitable context for determining movement development, the factors of age, sex, intelligence, maturity, teacher's estimate of achievement, and reading readiness were studied in relation to the subject's motor scores. Movement task scores were summarized for each age group. The study concluded that normal preschool children will perform a variety of movement tasks which are similar and which develop according to a predictable timetable; although motor performance and movement development vary with age, sex, and among individuals. Seven characteristics significant in the movement development of young children were identified. (Author/AJ)

6. Movement and Movement Patterns of Early Childhood. [Complete Report].

Abstract

This study investigated the progressive development in movement and movement patterns of children ages 2-6. Data were collected over a 3-year period at six-month intervals, based on films of 57 children performing 25 motor tasks. The results are presented along two dimensions: (1) Descriptive analysis of progress of young children in movement with indications of age, sex, and individual differences, and (2) descriptive analysis of development of movement patterns in each of 25 basic movement activities during early childhood. It was concluded that an identifiable sequence does occur in movement of children and that similar movement patterns emerge; that identifiable variations may also be expected; that a young child's movement development may be assessed by his progress over time and by comparisons with children of his own age; that general movement characteristics appear to be indicative of development in movement. These are dynamic balance, opposition and symmetry, total body assembly, rhythmic locomotion, eye-hand efficiency, agility, and postural adjustment. (DP)

Abstract

The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium reports the generation of new mouse mutant strains for over 5,000 genes from targeted embryonic stem cells on the C57BL/6N genetic background. This includes 2,850 null alleles for which no equivalent mutant mouse line exists, 2,987 novel conditional-ready alleles, and 4,433 novel reporter alleles. This nearly triples the number of genes with reporter alleles and almost doubles the number of conditional alleles available to the scientific community. When combined with more than 30 years of community effort, the total mutant allele mouse resource covers more than half of the genome. The extensively validated collection is archived and distributed through public repositories, facilitating availability to the worldwide biomedical research community, and expanding our understanding of gene function and human disease.

Abstract

This qualitative study examined fifteen organizational members across four international technology companies to discover how they behave and manage daily interactions in a virtual environment within a geographically distributed team. Using a grounded theory methodology, an extensive analysis of the interview data was conducted. Three core themes emerged that focus on the individuals’ attempts to manage impressions in an environment that demands multicommunication. The themes of time stacking, participation predications and performance are discussed in detail using the theoretical lens of impression management.

Abstract

The article presents a case study of a 45-year-old man who was presented in the hospital due to a 2-day history of sudden severe central chest pain with dyspnoea. Upon examination, the patient was experiencing hypoxia, tachypnea, hypotension, and tachycardia. The patient was positive of having a perforated duodenal ulcer which caused his chest pain and dyspnoea.
