Abstract

We report on a precise measurement of the electron-antineutrino angular correlation ($a$ coefficient) in free neutron beta-decay from the $a$SPECT experiment. The $a$ coefficient is inferred from the recoil energy spectrum of the protons which are detected in 4$\pi$ by the $a$SPECT spectrometer using magnetic adiabatic collimation with an electrostatic filter. Data are presented from a 100 days run at the Institut Laue Langevin in 2013. The sources of systematic errors are considered and included in the final result. We obtain $a = -0.10430(84)$ which is the most precise measurement of the neutron $a$ coefficient to date. From this, the ratio of axial-vector to vector coupling constants is derived giving $|\lambda| = 1.2677(28)$.

Abstract

Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) were produced in a 4 liter volume of superfluid helium using the PF1B cold neutron beam facility at the Institut Laue-Langevin and then extracted to a detector at room temperature. With a converter temperature of 1.08 K the number of accumulated UCNs was counted to be $91,\!700 \pm 300$. From this, we derive a volumetric UCN production rate of $(6.9 \pm 1.7)\,\mathrm{cm^{-3}\,s^{-1}}$, which includes a correction for losses in the converter during UCN extraction caused by a short storage time, but not accounting for UCN transport and detection efficiencies. The up-scattering rate of UCNs due to excitations in the superfluid was studied by scanning the temperature between 1.2-2.4 K. Using the temperature-dependent UCN production rate calculated from inelastic neutron scattering data in the analysis, the only UCN up-scattering process found to be present was from two-phonon scattering. Our analysis rules out contributions from the other scattering processes to $\lesssim 10\%$ of their predicted levels.

Abstract

This paper describes a new magnetic trap for ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) made from a 1.2 m long Halbach-octupole array of permanent magnets with an inner bore radius of 47 mm combined with an assembly of superconducting end coils and bias field solenoid. The use of the trap in a vertical, magneto-gravitational and a horizontal setup are compared in terms of the effective volume and ability to control key systematic effects that need to be addressed in high precision neutron lifetime measurements.

Abstract

The retardation spectrometer aSPECT was built to measure the shape of the proton spectrum in free neutron decay with high precision. This allows us to determine the antineutrino electron angular correlation coefficient a. We aim for a precision more than one order of magnitude better than the present best value, which is Delta_a /a = 5%. In a recent beam time performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin during April / May 2008 we reached a statistical accuracy of about 2% per 24 hours measurement time. Several systematic effects were investigated experimentally. Abstract

To accelerate hearing aid research, several mobile research platforms have recently been designed and some made publicly available. Here, we evaluate the electro-acoustic performance of the Portable Hearing Laboratory (PHL), a portable research hearing aid based on a miniature computer and wired Behind-The-Ear Receiver-In-Canal hearing aid headsets. To evaluate its performance capabilities, standard electro-acoustic performance metrics were determined according to IEC 60118-0:2015 and compared to those of current commercial hearing aids. In all performance metrics, the PHL is on a similar level as commercial devices of comparable style. The maximum output level in a 2 cm�� coupler is up to 115 dB SPL, and insertion gain values around 50 dB can be achieved across a broad frequency range. Also, the equivalent input noise and total harmonic distortion are in the same range as in commercial devices. More advanced features were purposely not evaluated here, since these are intended to be adjusted freely in the variable software environment. In conclusion, the PHL is a suitable platform for setting up field-usable experimental hearing aids for research purposes., Um die Forschung an H��rsystemen zu vereinfachen, wurden in den letzten Jahren verschiedene mobile Forschungsplattformen entwickelt und teilweise der ��ffentlichkeit zug��nglich gemacht. In diesem Beitrag zeigen wir beispielhaft eine Evaluation der elektroakustischen Leistungsmerkmale des Portable Hearing Lab (PHL), einem tragbaren Forschungsh��rger��t, das aus einem Miniaturcomputer und damit verkabelten Hinter-dem-Ohr-Headsets mit Exh��rern besteht. Um die Leistungsf��higkeit zu beurteilen, wurden Standardmesswerte nach IEC 60118-0:2015 bestimmt und mit denen von aktuell erh��ltlichen kommerziellen H��rger��ten verglichen. In allen Messwerten erreicht das PHL ein vergleichbares Niveau wie kommerzielle Ger��te gleicher Bauart. Der maximale Ausgangspegel in einem 2 cm��-Kuppler liegt bei bis zu 115 dB SPL, und Einsetzverst��rkungen bis zu 50 dB k��nnen ��ber einen breiten Frequenzbereich erreicht werden. Auch der Pegel des ��quivalenten Eigenrauschens und der harmonischen Verzerrungsprodukte liegen im Bereich kommerzieller Ger��te. Weiterf��hrende Merkmale wurden hier bewusst nicht untersucht, da die Softwareumgebung des PHL dem Nutzer gro��e Freiheiten f��r Anpassungen bietet, und diese daher sehr von der Einstellung und Anwendung abh��ngen. Insgesamt ist das PHL eine geeignete Plattform zum Aufbau experimenteller H��rger��te, die sich sowohl f��r den Einsatz im als auch au��erhalb des Labors eignen.

Abstract

We demonstrate the ability to record a tomographic tilt series containing 3487 images in only 3.5 s by using a direct electron detector in a transmission electron microscope. The electron dose is lower by at least one order of magnitude when compared with that used to record a conventional tilt series of fewer than 100 images in 15–60 minutes and the overall signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 4. Our results, which are illustrated for an inorganic nanotube, are important for ultra-low-dose electron tomography of electron-beam-sensitive specimens and real-time dynamic electron tomography of nanoscale objects with sub-ms temporal resolution.

Abstract

Supercritical water oxidation is being investigated as a method of treating spacecraft wastewater for recycle. In this process, oxidation is conducted in an aqueous phase maintained above the critical temperature (374 C) and pressure (215 bar) of water. Organic materials are oxidized with efficiencies greater than 99.99 percent in residence times of less than 1 minute. This paper presents preliminary results for urea destruction. Above 650 C, urea can be completely broken down to nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide and water by supercritical water oxidation, without the use of a specific catalyst.
