Abstract

Here, a benchtop hybrid magnetic shield containing four mumetal cylinders and nine internal flexible printed circuit boards is designed, constructed, tested, and operated. The shield is designed specifically as a test-bed for building and operating ultra-sensitive quantum magnetometers. The geometry and spacing of the mumetal cylinders are optimized to maximize shielding efficiency while maintaining Johnson noise $<15$ fT/$\sqrt{}$Hz. Experimental measurements at the shield's center show passive shielding efficiency of $\left(1.0\pm0.1\right){\times}10^6$ for a $0.2$ Hz oscillating field applied along the shield's axis. The nine flexible printed circuit boards generate three uniform fields, which all deviate from perfect uniformity by ${\leq}0.5$% along $50$% of the inner shield axis, and five linear field gradients and one second-order gradient, which all deviate by ${\leq}4$% from perfect linearity and curvature, respectively, over measured target regions. Together, the target field amplitudes are adjusted to minimize the remnant static field along $40$% of the inner shield axis, as mapped using an atomic magnetometer. In this region, the active null reduces the norm of the magnitudes of the three uniform fields and six gradients by factors of $19.5$ and $19.8$, respectively, thereby reducing the total static field from $1.68$ nT to $0.23$ nT., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures; This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

Abstract

Academic schools are a prominent feature of the educational landscape in England. Introduced in 2002, they are funded directly from central government and have become a major policy driver to reform the school system and increase educational attainment. Academies count for 60 percent of secondary schools and 13 percent of primaries. This report presents the findings from a rapid review of evidence on the performance of academy schools. It is based on 13 key studies which are summarised at the end of this guide. The purpose of the review is to make a contribution to understanding current research on academies with a view to identifiying gaps and drawing conclusions.

Abstract

Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the deuteron were measured at MAX-lab for incident photon energies of 55 MeV and 66 MeV at nominal laboratory angles of $45^\circ$, $125^\circ$, and $135^\circ$. Tagged photons were scattered from liquid deuterium and detected in three NaI spectrometers. By comparing the data with theoretical calculations in the framework of a one-boson-exchange potential model, the sum and difference of the isospin-averaged nucleon polarizabilities, $\alpha_N + \beta_N = 17.4 \pm 3.7$ and $\alpha_N - \beta_N = 6.4 \pm 2.4$ (in units of $10^{-4}$ fm$^3$), have been determined. By combining the latter with the global-averaged value for $\alpha_p - \beta_p$ and using the predictions of the Baldin sum rule for the sum of the nucleon polarizabilities, we have obtained values for the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities of $\alpha_n= 8.8 \pm 2.4$(total) $\pm 3.0$(model) and $\beta_n = 6.5 \mp 2.4$(total) $\mp 3.0$(model), respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, revtex. Individuals with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion are at increased risk of poor outcomes. Intravenous thrombolysis with tenecteplase might improve outcomes in this population. We aimed to test the superiority of intravenous tenecteplase over non-thrombolytic standard of care in patients with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion or focal perfusion abnormality.

31. Targeting the oncogenic TBX3:nucleolin complex to treat multiple sarcoma subtypes

Abstract

Sarcomas are diverse cancers of mesenchymal origin, with compromised clinical management caused by insufficient diagnostic biomarkers and limited treatment options. The transcription factor TBX3 is upregulated in a diverse range of sarcoma subtypes, where it plays a direct oncogenic role, and it may thus represent a novel therapeutic target. To identify versatile ways to target TBX3, we performed affinity purification coupled by mass spectrometry to identify putative TBX3 protein cofactors that regulate its oncogenic activity in sarcomas. Here we identify and validate the multifunctional phosphoprotein nucleolin as a TBX3 cofactor. We show that nucleolin is co-expressed with TBX3 in several sarcoma subtypes and their expression levels positively correlate in sarcoma patients which are associated with poor prognosis. Furthermore, we demonstrate that nucleolin and TBX3 interact in chondrosarcoma, liposarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma cells where they act together to enhance proliferation and migration and regulate a common set of tumor suppressor genes. Importantly, the nucleolin targeting aptamer, AS1411, exhibits selective anti-cancer activity in these cells and mislocalizes TBX3 and nucleolin to the cytoplasm which correlates with the re-expression of the TBX3/nucleolin target tumor suppressors CDKN1A (p21CIP1) and CDKN2A (p14ARF). Our findings provide the first evidence that TBX3 requires nucleolin to promote features of sarcomagenesis and that disruption of the oncogenic TBX3-nucleolin interaction by AS1411 may be a novel approach for treating sarcomas.

Abstract

Assessments plays an important role in Higher Education as a cornerstone and driver of learning and teaching activities, curriculum development and renewal, achievement of learning objectives and student academic success, as well as the development of graduate attributes. Assessment load, however, in terms of over-assessment (along with under-assessment), is a blurred concept that is difficult to define qualitatively and measure quantitatively. To address this gap in research, based on a comprehensive literature review, we developed a multidimensional assessment index (MAI), with eight indicators, to measure over-assessment. These indicators include features of continuous assessment (total number, mark allocation or size, weighting, degree of difficulty, frequency and scheduling, type, content coverage and repetition) and the presence, or absence, of a single high-stakes final examination. We applied these indicators to a case study of an undergraduate Economics, consisting of 12 modules across 3 years of study, at a university in South Africa. The MAI was then compared with the pass rate, as a measure of student success, and there was a moderate and negative correlation between the MAI (high assessment loads) and pass rate variables. Lastly, the indicator with the strongest correlation with pass rate was the length of assessments (or proportion of continuous assessments with a high mark count). It is hoped that this study helps fill the gaps in existing literature on definition and measurement of assessment loads, and the practical use of the MAI as a tool to evaluate assessment load and inform the design of assessment for student learning and success. Abstract

Introduction: The move from senior student to novice/advanced beginner registered nurse has been noted to be a stressful period. This longitudinal study follows the experiences of five cohorts of graduate New Zealand registered nurses throughout their first year of practice (n = 530). Methods: Data were collected via self-report survey using the Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey© at three points throughout the first year of practice. Results: Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) resulted in a 5-factor solution for 24 items from section two of the survey: professional support, professional role, professional concerns, professional communication and personal stress. Most respondents (93%) were female, New Zealand Europeans (80%) working in either surgical or medical clinical areas. Professional support from preceptors and exposure to positive role models contributed to a sense of being supported for 81% of the respondents. Satisfaction with choosing the professional role of nursing remained constant with over 90% agreeing or strongly agreeing they had made the right career choice. Across time, respondents reported few professional concerns and few concerns about professional communication. Concerns about personal stress were consistent, with 50% reporting stress related to issues such as finances, childcare and job performance. Conclusion: Contrary to other research, a honeymoon period was not evident (other than the initial high satisfaction with salary), rather the nurses' satisfaction with nursing remained high throughout the year.
