7. Thinking about How We Think: Promoting Museum Literacy Skills with Metacognition

Abstract

Like many museums, the Missouri Historical Society wants to empower students to engage with history on their own terms. In our quest to create museum literate learners and push the student-centered field trip model to its maximum, we've internalized the crucial role of metacognition, or how we facilitate opportunities for students to think about their own thinking. With so many artifacts to encounter and stories to engage with, taking time for kids to reflect on what they are doing and how they are doing it seems like it should be a low priority. But we've found that metacognition is the most important part of our tours. This article will briefly outline the basics of metacognition; describe why and how metacognitive practices are woven into school programs at the Missouri Historical Society; and finally, it will take a look at the impact metacognition has on students participating in our programs.

Abstract

Supergenes are tight clusters of loci that facilitate the co-segregation of adaptive variation, providing integrated control of complex adaptive phenotypes (1). Polymorphic supergenes, in which specific combinations of traits are maintained within a single population, were first described for 'pin' and 'thrum' floral types in Primula1 and Fagopyrum (2), but classic examples are also found in insect mimicry (3-5) and snail morphology (6). Understanding the evolutionary mechanisms that generate these co-adapted gene sets, as well as the mode of limiting the production of unfit recombinant forms, remains a substantial challenge (7-10). Here we show that individual wing-pattern morphs in the polymorphic mimetic butterfly Heliconius numata are associated with different genomic rearrangements at the supergene locus P. These rearrangements tighten the genetic linkage between at least two colour-pattern loci that are known to recombine in closely related species (9-11), with complete suppression of recombination being observed in experimental crosses across a 400-kilobase interval containing at least 18 genes. In natural populations, notable patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) are observed across the entire Pregion. The resulting divergent haplotype clades and inversion breakpoints are found in complete association with wing-pattern morphs. Our results indicate that allelic combinations at known wing-patterning loci have become locked together in a polymorphic rearrangement at the Plocus, forming a supergene that acts as a simple switch between complex adaptive phenotypes found in sympatry. Abstract

Since the completion of the genome sequence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in 1996 (refs 1, 2), there has been a large increase in complete genome sequences, accompanied by great advances in our understanding of genome evolution. Although little is known about the natural and life histories of yeasts in the wild, there are an increasing number of studies looking at ecological and geographic distributions (3,4), population structure (5-8) and sexual versus asexual reproduction (9,10). Less well understood at the whole genome level are the evolutionary processes acting within populations and species that lead to adaptation to different environments, phenotypic differences and reproductive isolation. Here we present one- to fourfold or more coverage of the genome sequences of over seventy isolates of the baker's yeast S. cerevisiae and its closest relative, Saccharomyces paradoxus. We examine variation in gene content, single nucleotide polymorphisms, nucleotide insertions and deletions, copy numbers and transposable elements. We find that phenotypic variation broadly correlates with global genome-wide phylogenetic relationships. S. paradoxus populations are well delineated along geographic boundaries, whereas the variation among worldwide S. cerevisiae isolates shows less differentiation and is comparable to a single S. paradoxus population. 32. Characterization of HP1 Double-Mutants in Drosophila melanogaster

Abstract

Many proteins are involved in maintaining chromatin states, including the Heterochromatin Protein 1 (HP1) family. Drosophila melanogaster has three somatic homologs of the HP1 family: HP1a, HP1B, and HP1C. The effects of removing individual HP1 homologs has been investigated; however, little research has been performed on the loss of multiple HP1 proteins. We generated double-mutant fly strains lacking pairwise combinations of the HP1 proteins and investigated the impact of this manipulation. HP1B/HP1C double-mutant third instar larvae had a 7.8% and 15% survival rate, depending on the HP1b allele used. Of these surviving double-mutant larvae, 2.4% and 8.3% survived to the adult stage, again depending on the specific HP1b allele uses. These data illustrate that, although detrimental to the overall health of the flies, complete loss of HP1B and HP1C is survivable in D. melanogaster, raising the possibility that other HP1 family members may compensate for their loss. Ongoing studies focus on HP1a/HP1B/HP1C double-mutants at earlier stages of development to determine at which stage most animals die and on the HP1a/HP1C double-mutants. Our study highlights possible crosstalk and cooperative functions between HP1 proteins, and future studies will provide insights into the potentially overlapping functions of HP1 homologs.

Abstract

The comparative genomic analysis of single killer immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) haplotypes in two non-human primates is reported. An analysis of the intronic regions of the two non-human primates reveals the presence of ancient repeat elements, which are indicative of the duplication events that have taken place since the last common ancestor.

Abstract

\ud Background: Intentional rounding (IR) is a structured process whereby nurses conduct one to two hourly checks with every patient using a standardised protocol. \ud Objective: A realist synthesis of the evidence on IR was undertaken to develop IR programme theories of what works, for whom, in what circumstances and why. \ud Methods: A three-stage literature search and a stakeholder consultation event was completed. A variety of sources were searched, including AMED, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, HMIC, Google and Google Scholar for published and unpublished literature. In line with realist synthesis methodology, each study’s ‘fitness for purpose’ was assessed by considering its relevance and rigour. \ud Results: A total of 44 papers met the inclusion criteria. To make the programme theories underpinning IR explicit, we identified eight a priori propositions: (1) When implemented in a comprehensive and consistent way, IR improves healthcare quality, satisfaction and reduces potential harms; (2) Embedding IR into daily routine practice gives nurses ‘allocated time to care’; (3) Documenting IR checks increases accountability and raises fundamental standards of care; (4) When workload and staffing levels permit, more frequent nurse-patient contact improves relationships and increases awareness of patient comfort and safety needs; (5) Increasing time when nurses are in the direct vicinity of patients promotes vigilance, provides reassurance and reduces potential harms; (6) More frequent nurse-patient contact enables nurses to anticipate patient needs and take pre-emptive action; (7) IR documentation facilitates teamwork and communication; (8) IR empowers patients to ask for what they need to maintain their comfort and wellbeing. Given the limited evidence base, further research is needed to test and further refine these propositions. \ud Conclusions: Despite widespread use of IR, this paper highlights the paradox that there is ambiguity surrounding its purpose and limited evidence of how it works in practice.
