Experimental studies of the products of elementary gas-phase chemical reactions occurring at low temperatures (<50 K) are very scarce, but of importance for fundamental studies of reaction dynamics, comparisons with high-level quantum dynamical calculations, and, in particular, for providing data for the modeling of cold astrophysical environments, such as dense interstellar clouds, the atmospheres of the outer planets, and cometary comae. This study describes the construction and testing of a new apparatus designed to measure product branching fractions of elementary bimolecular gas-phase reactions at low temperatures. It combines chirped-pulse Fourier transform millimeter wave spectroscopy with continuous uniform supersonic flows and high repetition rate laser photolysis. After a comprehensive description of the apparatus, the experimental procedures and data processing protocols used for signal recovery, the capabilities of the instrument are explored by the study of the photodissociation of acrylonitrile and the detection of two of its photoproducts, HC3N and HCN. A description is then given of a study of the reactions of the CN radical with C2H2 at 30 K, detecting the HC3N product, and with C2H6 at 10 K, detecting the HCN product. A calibration of these two products is finally attempted using the photodissociation of acrylonitrile as a reference process. The gut microbiota harvests energy from indigestible plant polysaccharides, forming short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are absorbed from the bowel. SCFAs provide energy--presumably after easily digested food components have been absorbed from the small intestine. Infant night waking is believed by many parents to be due to hunger. Our objective was to determine whether faecal SCFAs are associated with longer uninterrupted sleep in infants. Infants (n = 57) provided faecal samples for determining SCFAs (7 months of age), and questionnaire data for determining infant sleep (7 and 8 months). Linear regression determined associations between SCFAs--faecal acetate, propionate and butyrate--and sleep. For each 1% higher propionate at 7 months of age, the longest night sleep was 6 (95% CI: 1, 10) minutes longer at both 7 and 8 months. Abstract Products formed in the reaction of C2H radicals with 1,3-butadiene at 4 Torr and 298 K are probed using photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The reaction takes place in a slow-flow reactor, and products are ionized by tunable vacuum-ultraviolet light from the Advanced Light Source. The principal reaction channel involves addition of the radical to one of the unsaturated sites of 1,3-butadiene, followed by H-loss to give isomers of C6H6. The photoionization spectrum of the C6H6 product indicates that fulvene is formed with a branching fraction of (57 ± 30)%. At least one more isomer is formed, which is likely to be one or more of 3,4-dimethylenecyclobut-1-ene, 3-methylene-1-penten-4-yne or 3-methyl-1,2-pentadien-4-yne. An experimental photoionization spectrum of 3,4-dimethylenecyclobut-1-ene and simulated photoionization spectra of 3-methylene-1-penten-4-yne and 3-methyl-1,2-pentadien-4-yne are used to fit the measured data and obtain maximum branching fractions of 74%, 24% and 31%, respectively, for these isomers. An upper limit of 45% is placed on the branching fraction for the sum of benzene and 1,3-hexadien-5-yne. The reactive potential energy surface is also investigated computationally. Minima and first-order saddle-points on several possible reaction pathways to fulvene + H and 3,4-dimethylenecyclobut-1-ene + H products are calculated.

Copper and copper-based compounds have broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, but concerns about leaching into the environment and toxicity on non-target organisms is leading the use of copper-based coatings being restricted. Our objective was to develop coatings that used the biocidal activity of copper, but with low negative impacts by reducing its leaching into the environment. This study reports the synthesis and characterisation of copper coordinating ligands, their formulation into coatings and testing of their antibacterial activity. A polyacylhydrazone and a series of simple acylhydrazones were synthesised and coordinated to Cu(II), but were considered unsuitable due to either their poor water-solubility or high levels of copper leaching. In an alternative approach, copper was successfully chelated to the tetraazamacrocycle, cyclen, and used to synthesise Cu(II)-cyclen functionalised silica particles, which were successfully combined with commercial paint formulations. These functionalised products showed poor antibacterial activity when incorporated into epoxy coatings, probably due to the low copper content of the formulations. However, these ligands may have other applications, such as removal of heavy metals from contaminated effluent steams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
