Search

Wire media (WM) resonators have emerged as promising realization for plasma haloscopes -- devices designed to detect axions, a potential component of dark matter. Key factors influencing the detection probability include cavity volume, resonance quality factor, and form factor. While the form factor has been explored for resonant frequency tuning, its optimization for axion detection remains unexplored. In this work, we present a novel approach to significantly enhance the form factor of WM plasma haloscopes. By shifting the metal walls of the resonator by a quarter wavelength, we effectively convert an electric wall boundary condition into a magnetic wall one, allowing for an almost uniform mode. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations confirm that this modification improves the electric field profile and boosts the form factor. We validate these findings through experimental results from two prototype resonators: one with a standard geometry and another with a quarter-wave air gap between the WM and the walls. Additionally, our method provides a simple way to control the field profile within WM cavities, which can be explored for further applications.

In this work, we consider instantaneous transitions of an infinitely extended uniaxial dielectric into a wire medium (WM) of continuous infinitely long conducting wires. Due to the strong spatial dispersion in the WM the known (Morgenthaler's) theory of temporal discontinuities is not applicable. We solve this problem analytically in time domain. We show that a transverse electromagnetic (TM) plane wave transforms into four waves: a pair of TM waves and a pair of transverse electromagnetic waves. This way, the power flow splits into two different directions, with one of them along the wires. Such a transition can possibly be achieved by nanoplasma discharges in the gaps of the split wires, initiated by an external voltage source applied to the wire and transforming the split wires forming the uniaxial dielectric into continuous ones., Comment: A conference paper submitted to EuCAP 2025 Conference

In this work, we theoretically study temporal interfaces between media with strong spatial dispersion and dielectrics. In particular, we consider a temporal discontinuity that transforms a wire medium sample, a metamaterial with resonant spatial dispersion, into a uniaxial dielectric. We show that this transition results in a transformation of the deeply subwavelength spatial spectrum of TEM waves propagating in the wire medium at a certain frequency into a spectrum of plane waves at new frequencies that are all higher than the initial one. The waves at different frequencies propagate in different directions. Their complex amplitudes and propagation directions are uniquely related to the amplitudes of the spatial harmonics of the fields which existed before the transition. We explain how to implement this transition. The revealed effect may result in a promising method of subwavelength imaging.

We propose a practical framework for designing a physically consistent reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to overcome the inefficiency of the conventional phase gradient approach. For a section of Cape Town and across three different coverage enhancement scenarios, we optimize the amplitude of the RIS reradiation modes using Sionna ray tracing and a gradient-based learning technique. We then determine the required RIS surface/sheet impedance given the desired amplitudes for the reradiation modes, design the corresponding unitcells, and validate the performance through full-wave numerical simulations using CST Microwave Studio. We further validate our approach by fabricating a RIS using the parallel plate waveguide technique and conducting experimental measurements that align with our theoretical predictions.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are electromagnetically passive controllable structures, deflecting the incident wave beam in directions predefined by the control signal. A usual way to design RIS based on metasurfaces (MSs) is based on the application of the approximation in which the reflective properties of a uniform MS are attributed to a unit cell of the non-uniform one. We call this approximation the reflection locality. In the present paper, we show that this approximation may result in heavy errors. We also find a condition under which this approximation is applicable for a wide range of incidence and deflection angles. This condition is the angular stability of the reflection phase of a uniform MS based on which the non-uniform one is generated. We present an approximate analytical proof of the equivalence of the reflection locality and angular stability. As an example, we report theoretical and experimental results we obtained for a binary RIS whose generic uniform analogue has the angular stability. Meanwhile, for its counterpart without angular stability (the so-called mushroom MS) the same model fails.

In this work we study electromagnetic properties of a resonator recently suggested for the search of axions - a hypothetical candidate to explain dark matter. A wire medium loaded resonator (called a plasma haloscope when used to search for dark matter) consists of a box filled with a dense array of parallel wires electrically connected to top and bottom walls. We show that the homogenization model of wire medium works for this resonator without mesoscopic corrections, and that the resonator quality $Q$ at the frequency of our interest drops versus the growth of the resonator volume $V$ until it is dominated by resistive losses in the wires. We find that even at room temperature metals like copper can give quality factors in the thousands, an order of magnitude higher than originally assumed. Our theoretical results for both loaded and unloaded resonator quality factors were confirmed by building an experimental prototype. The rapid development of chargeable devices has caused a great deal of interest in efficient and stable wireless power transfer (WPT) solutions. Most conventional WPT technologies exploit outdated electromagnetic field control methods proposed in the 20th century, wherein some essential parameters are sacrificed in favour of the other ones (efficiency vs. stability), making available WPT systems far from the optimal ones. Over the last few years, the development of novel approaches to electromagnetic field manipulation has enabled many up-and-coming technologies holding great promises for advanced WPT. Examples include coherent perfect absorption, exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems, non-radiating states and anapoles, advanced artificial materials and metastructures. This work overviews the recent achievements in novel physical effects and materials for advanced WPT. We provide a consistent analysis of existing technologies, their pros and cons, and attempt to envision possible perspectives.

In the diffraction of visible light by a dielectric microcylinder packages of evanescent waves always arise. However, a single-wave incidence corresponds to rather small impact of evanescent waves outside the cylinder. In this paper, we theoretically show that a symmetric pair of plane waves impinging a glass microcylinder corresponds to much higher impact of the evanescent waves. Namely, the interference of the evanescent waves with the propagating ones results in the suppression of the electromagnetic field in an area with very small cross section. This area is located in free space at a substantial distance from the {rear side of the microcylinder and along its axis}. It may serve a linear optical trap for cold atoms and ions.

In this paper an approach for broadening of operational band in a dense array of dipole antennas by implementing passive split-loop resonators (SLRs) as decouplers is presented. Compared to the previous method, where three closely located active dipoles were decoupled by two passive dipole, the operational band is significantly improved from $0.5 \%$ to $1.6 \%$ at the same level of decoupling -8dB for the cross-talk and inter-channel transmittance. To delineate, the presence of two SLRs results in birefringence of the resonant interaction of SLRs which creates two different eigenmodes for decoupling. As a result, a dual-resonant decoupled band is obtained. Alongside with analytical investigation, numerical and experimental investigations verify the veracity of our approach. Moreover, the possibility of decoupling by SLRs for arrays with more active dipoles is investigated numerically.

Theory of a high impedance coil (HIC) - a cable loop antenna with a modified shield - is discussed comprehensively for both in transmitting and receiving regimes. Understanding a weakness of the previously reported HIC in transmitting regime, we suggest another HIC which is advantageous in both transmitting and receiving regimes compared to a conventional loop antenna. In contrast with a claim of previous works, only this HIC is a practical transceiver HIC. Using the perturbation approach and adding gaps to both shield and inner wire of the cable, we tune the resonance frequency to be suitable for ultra-high field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our theoretical model is verified by simulations. Designing the HIC theoretically, we have fabricated an array of three HICs operating at 298 MHz. The operation of the array has been experimentally studied in presence of different phantoms used in UHF MRI and the results compared with those obtained for a conventional array.

We present a theoretical and numerical study of a dual metasurface superlens dedicated to the near field optical imaging of submicron objects. Compared to the previous studies of dual metasurface plasmonic superlenses, we suggest a more adequate theoretical model of their operation. The new model allows us to obtain twice better operational characteristics of the redisigned superlens. For the first time, we describe the operation of such the superlens using full wave numerical simulations, taking into account the interfaces of the host medium slab and proving the nanoimaging for scattering objects instead of a radiating source. We discuss and address both application and fabrication issue for this superlens.

Free positioning of receivers is one of the key requirements for many wireless power transfer (WPT) applications, required from the end-user point of view. However, realization of stable and effective wireless power transfer for freely positioned receivers is technically challenging task because of the requirement of complex control and tuning. In this paper, we propose a concept of automatic receiver tracking and power channeling for multi-transmitter WPT systems using uncoupled transmitter and uncoupled repeaters. Each transmitter-repeater pair forms an independent power transfer channel providing an effective link for the power flow from the transmitter to the receiver. The proposed WPT system is capable of maintaining stable output power with constant high efficiency regardless of the receiver position and without having any active control or tuning. The proposed concept is numerically and experimentally verified by using a four-transmitter WPT system in form of a linear array. The experimental results show that the efficiency of the proposed WPT system can reach 94.5\% with a variation less than 2\% against the receiver position.

We present an omnidirectional wireless power transfer (WPT) system capable of automatic power flow control using three orthogonal transmitter (Tx)-repeater (Rp) pairs. The power drawn from each transmitter is automatically adjusted depending on the mutual inductance between the receiver and the Tx-Rp pair. The proposed approach enables the receiver to harvest almost uniform power with high efficiency (90\%) regardless of its position.

We report decoupling of two closely located resonant dipole antennas dedicated for ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We show that a scatterer slightly raised over the plane of antennas grants a sufficient decoupling even for antennas separated by very small gap (below 1/30 of the wavelength). We compare the operation of two decoupling scatterers. One of them is a shortcut resonant dipole and another is a split-loop resonator (SLR). Previously, we have shown that the SLR offers a wider operational band than the dipole and the same level of decoupling. However, it was so for an array in free space. The presence of the body phantom drastically changes the decoupling conditions. Moreover, the requirement to minimize the parasitic scattering from the decoupling element into the body makes the decoupling dipole much more advantageous compared to the SLR.

Metasurfaces have been investigated and its numerous exotic functionalities and the potentials to arbitrarily control of the electromagnetic fields have been extensively explored. However, only limited types of metasurface have finally entered into real products. Here, we introduce a concept of a metasurface-based smart table for wirelessly charging portable devices and report its first prototype. The proposed metasurface can efficiently transform evanescent fields into propagating waves which significantly improves the near field coupling to charge a receiving device arbitrarily placed on its surface wirelessly through magnetic resonance coupling. In this way, power transfer efficiency of 80$\%$ is experimentally obtained when the receiver is placed at any distances from the transmitter. The proposed concept enables a variety of important applications in the fields of consumer electronics, electric automobiles, implanted medical devices, etc. The further developed metasurface-based smart table may serve as an ultimate 2-dimensional platform and support charging multiple receivers., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Increasing the static magnetic field strength into the realm of ultrahigh fields (7 T and higher) is the central trend in modern magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The use of ultrahigh fields in MR-imaging leads to numerous effects some of them raising the image quality, some degrading, some previously undetected in lower fields. We demonstrate an improvement in the performance of organic photovoltaic (OPV) systems based on small molecules by ionic gating via controlled reversible n-doping of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) coated on fullerenes ETL: C60 and C70. Such electric double layer charging (EDLC) doping, achieved by ionic liquid (IL) charging, allows tuning the electronic concentration in MWCNT and in the fullerene planar acceptor layers, increasing it by orders of magnitude. This leads to decreasing the series and increasing the shunt resistances of OPV and allows to use of thick (up to 200 nm) ETLs, increasing the durability and stability of OPV. Two stages of OPV enhancement are described, upon the increase of gating bias Vg: at small (or even zero) Vg the extended interface of IL and porous transparent MWCNT is charged by gating, and the fullerene charge collector is significantly improved, becoming an ohmic contact. This changes the S-shaped I-V curve via improving the electron collection by n-doped MWCNT cathode with ohmic interfacial contact. The I-V curves further improve at higher gating bias Vg due to the raising of the Fermi level and lowering of MWCNT work function. At the next qualitative stage, the acceptor fullerene layer becomes n-doped by electron injection from MWCNT while ions of IL penetrate into fullerene. At this step the internal built-in field is created within OPV, which helps exciton dissociation and charge separation/transport, increasing further the Jsc and the FF (Fill factor). Overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) increases nearly 50 times in CuPc/fullerene OPV with MWCNT cathode. In this letter, we theoretically and experimentally prove the possibility of the complete passive decoupling for two parallel resonant dipoles by a split-loop resonator. Unlike previously achieved decoupling by a similar resonant dipole, this decoupling technique allows us to avoid the shrink of the operation band. Compare to previous work, simulation and measurement show 100\% enhancemnet of relative operation band from 0.2% to 0.4%

In this paper, we prove that two parallel dipole antennas can be decoupled by a similar but passive dipole located in the middle between them. The decoupling is proved for whatever excitation of these antennas and for ultimately small distances between them. Our theoretical model based on the method of induced electromotive forces is validated by numerical simulations and measurements. A good agreement between theory, simulation and measurement proves the veracity of our approach.

Quality of spatial separation between electric and magnetic fields in an electromagnetic wave is fundamentally constrained by nonlocal nature of Maxwell equations. While electric and magnetic energy densities in a wave, propagating in vacuum, are equal at each point in space, carefully designed photonic structures can enable surpassing this limit. Here, a set of high index dielectric tubes was for the first time proposed and theoretically and experimentally demonstrated to deliver a record high spatial separation, overcoming the free space scenario by more than three orders of magnitude with simultaneous enhancement of the magnetic field. Separation effect in the proposed structure is enabled by the near-field interference on anapole-like states, designed by tuning geometrical parameters of coupled dielectric tubes. The void layout of the structure enables the direct observation of the effect with near-field probes and could be further employed for relevant applications. Conventional wireless power transfer systems consist of a microwave power generator and transmitter located at one place and a microwave power receiver located at a distance. Here we show that wireless power transfer can be realized as a single distributed microwave generator with an over-the-air feedback, so that the microwave power is generated directly at the place where the energy needs to be delivered. We demonstrate that the use of this paradigm increases efficiency and dramatically reduces sensitivity to misalignments, variations in load and power, and possible presence of obstacles between the source and receiver., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The Purcell effect is usually described as a modification of the spontaneous decay rate in the presence of a resonator. In plasmonics, this effect is commonly associated with a large local-field enhancement in "hot spots" due to the excitation of surface plasmons. However, high-index dielectric nanostructures, which become the basis of all-dielectric nanophotonics, can not provide high values of the local-field enhancement due to larger radiation losses. Here, we demonstrate how to achieve a strong Purcell effect in all-dielectric nanostructures, and show theoretically that the Purcell factor can be increased by two orders of magnitude in a finite chain of silicon nanoparticles. Using the eigenmode analysis for an infinite chain, we demonstrate that the high Purcell factor regime is associated with a Van Hove singularity. Synthetic perovskites with photovoltaic properties open a new era in solar photovoltaics. Due to high optical absorption perovskite-based thin-film solar cells are usually considered as fully absorbing solar radiation on condition of ideal blooming. However, is it really so? The analysis of the literature data has shown that the absorbance of all photovoltaic pervoskites has the spectral hole at infrared frequencies where the solar radiation spectrum has a small local peak. This absorption dip results in the decrease of the optical efficiency of thin-film pervoskite solar cells by nearly 3% and close the ways of utilise them at this range for any other applications. We develop a semi-analytical approach to calculate the polarizability tensors of an arbitrary individual scatterer. The approach is based on the calculation of induced electric and/or magnetic dipole moments on the scatterer. By taking the advantages of the present approach, we calculate the individual polarizability tensors of an isolated scatterer in a homogeneous isotropic medium. Moreover, we obtain the polarizability tensors of scatterers located between two different isotropic media. Furthermore, due to the nature of the proposed method, we may determine the effective polarizability of a scatterer in a periodic array. To this end and for comparison reasons, we investigate two other methods for calculating effective polarizability tensors of scatterers in a two-dimensional periodic array. The proposed approach, in comparison to other reported approaches, is simpler, easily implemented, and does not require spherical harmonic expansion or complicated far-field calculations. The Purcell effect is defined as the modification of spontaneous decay in the presence of a resonator, and in plasmonics it is usually associated with the large local-field enhancement in "hot spots" due to surface plasmon polaritons. Here we propose a novel strategy for enhancing the Purcell effect through engineering the radiation directivity without a strict requirement of the local field enhancement. Employing this approach, we demonstrate how to enhance the Purcell effect by two orders of magnitude in all-dielectric nanostructures recently suggested as building blocks of low-loss nanophotonics and metamaterials. We support our concept by proof-of-principle microwave experiments with arrays of high-index dielectric resonators.

The ideal black body fully absorbs all incident rays, that is, all propagating waves created by arbitrary sources. The known idealized realization of a black body is the perfectly matched layer (PML), widely used in numerical electromagnetics. However, ideal black bodies and PMLs do not interact with evanescent fields existing near any finite-size source, and the energy stored in these fields cannot be harvested. Here we introduce the concept of the ideal conjugate matched layer (CML), which fully absorbs energy of both propagating and evanescent fields of sources acting as an ideal sink for electromagnetic energy. Conjugate matched absorbers have exciting application potentials, as resonant attractors of electromagnetic energy into the absorber volume. We derive the conditions on the constitutive parameters of media which can serve as CML materials, numerically study the performance of planar and cylindrical CML and discuss possible realizations of such materials as metal-dielectric composites., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

We study a highly controllable perfect plasmonic absorber -- a thin metamaterial layer which possess balanced electric and magnetic responses in some frequency range. We show that this regime is compatible with both metal-backed variant of the structure or its semitransparent variant. The Purcell effect - the modification of the spontaneous emission rate in presence of resonant cavities or other resonant objects - is a fundamental effect of quantum electrodynamics. However, a change of the emission rate caused by environment different from free space has a classical counterpart. Not only quantum emitters, but any small antenna tuned to the resonance is an oscillator with radiative losses, and the influence of the environment on its radiation can be understood and measured in terms of the antenna radiation resistance. We present a general approach which is applicable to measurements of the Purcell factor for radio antennas and to calculations of these factors for quantum emitters. Our methodology is suitable for calculation and measurement of both electric and magnetic Purcell factors, it is versatile and applies to various frequency ranges. The approach is illustrated by a general equivalent scheme and allows the Purcell factor to be expressed through the continious radiation of a small antenna in presence of the environment.

Here, we demonstrate that the power spectral density of thermal radiation at a specific wavelength produced by a body of finite dimensions set up in free space under a fixed temperature could be made theoretically arbitrary high, if one could realize double negative metamaterials with arbitrary small loss and arbitrary high absolute values of permittivity and permeability (at a given frequency). This result refutes the widespread belief that Planck's law itself sets a hard upper limit on the spectral density of power emitted by a finite macroscopic body whose size is much greater that the wavelength. Here we propose a physical realization of a metamaterial emitter whose spectral emissivity can be greater than that of the ideal black body under the same conditions. Due to the reciprocity between the heat emission and absorption processes such cooled down superemitter also acts as an optimal sink for the thermal radiation --- the "thermal black hole" --- which outperforms Kirchhoff-Planck's black body which can absorb only the rays directly incident on its surface. The results may open a possibility to realize narrowband super-Planckian thermal radiators and absorbers for future thermo-photovoltaic systems and other devices., Comment: 34 pages, 7 figures (largely revised version with new numerical results added)

We introduce new micron-gap thermophotovoltaic systems enhanced by tungsten nanowires. We theoretically show that these systems allow the frequency-selective super-Planckian spectrum of radiative heat transfer that promises a very efficient generation of electricity. Our system analysis covers practical aspects such as output power per unit area and efficiency of the tap water cooling.

Recently, we have suggested dielectric metamaterial composed as an array of submicron dielectric spheres located on top of an amorphous thin-film solar cell. We have theoretically shown that this metamaterial can decrease the reflection and simultaneously can suppress the transmission through the photovoltaic layer because it transforms the incident plane wave into a set of focused light beams. This theoretical concept has been strongly developed and experimentally confirmed in the present paper. Here we consider the metamaterial for oblique angle illumination, redesign the solar cell and present a detailed experimental study of the whole structure. We propose a light-trapping structure offering a significant enhancement of photovoltaic absorption in transparent organic solar cells operating at infrared while the visible light transmission keeps sufficiently high. The main mechanism of light trapping is related with the excitation of collective oscillations of the metal nanoantenna arrays, characterized by advantageous field distribution in the volume of the solar cell. Using our recently developed equivalent circuit model of radiative heat transfer we analyze the far-field thermal emission from bodies of constrained dimensions. We prove that the power radiated by a hypothetical metamaterial emitter which is conjugate matched with all the harmonics of the emitted field at a given wavelength can be infinitely higher than the power emitted by an ideal black body of the same radius. We introduce a novel concept of superdirective antennas based on the generation of higher-order optically-induced magnetic multipole modes. All-dielectric nanoantenna can be realized as an optically small spherical dielectric nanoparticle with a notch excited by a point source (e.g. a quantum dot) located in the notch. The superdirectivity effect is not associated with high dissipative losses. For these dielectric nanoantennas we predict the effect of the beam steering at the nanoscale characterized by a subwavelength sensitivity of the beam radiation direction to the source position. We confirm the predicted effects experimentally through the scaling to the microwave frequency range.

We suggest a novel concept of efficient light-trapping structures for thin-film solar cells based on arrays of planar nanoantennas operating far from plasmonic resonances. The operation principle of our structures relies on the excitation of chessboard-like collective modes of the nanoantenna arrays with the field localized between the neighboring metal elements. We demonstrated theoretically substantial enhancement of solar-cell short-circuit current by the designed light-trapping structure in the whole spectrum range of the solar-cell operation compared to conventional structures employing anti-reflecting coating. Our approach provides a general background for a design of different types of efficient broadband light-trapping structures for thin-film solar-cell technologically compatible with large-area thin-film fabrication techniques.

We demonstrate a simple way to achieve superdirectivity of electrically small antennas based on a spherical dielectric particle with a notch. We predict this effect theoretically for nanoantennas excited by a point-like emitter located in the notch, and then confirm it experimentally at microwaves for a ceramic sphere excited by a small wire dipole. We explain the effect of superdirectivity by the resonant excitation of high-order multipole modes of electric and magnetic fields which are usually negligible for small perfect spherical particles.

Here, we develop a theory of radiative heat transfer based on an equivalent electrical network representation for the hot material slabs in an arbitrary multilayered environment with arbitrary distribution of temperatures and electromagnetic properties among the layers. Our approach is fully equivalent to the known theories operating with the fluctuating current density, while being significantly simpler in analysis and applications. A practical example of the near-infrared heat transfer through the micron gap filled with an indefinite metamaterial is considered using the suggested method. We suggest a broadband optical unidirectional arrayed nanoantenna consisting of equally spaced nanorods of gradually varying length. Each nanorod can be driven by near-field quantum emitters radiating at different frequencies or, according to the reciprocity principle, by an incident light at the same frequency. Broadband unidirectional emission and reception characteristics of the nano-antenna open up novel opportunities for subwavelength light manipulation and quantum communication, as well as for enhancing the performance of photoactive devices such as photovoltaic detectors, light-emitting diodes, and solar cells., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

Near-field heat transfer between two closely spaced radiating media can exceed in orders radiation through the interface of a single black body. This effect is caused by exponentially decaying (evanescent) waves which form the photon tunnel between two transparent boundaries. However, in the mid-infrared range it holds when the gap between two media is as small as few tens of nanometers. We propose a new paradigm of the radiation heat transfer which makes possible the strong photon tunneling for micron thick gaps. For it the air gap between two media should be modified, so that evanescent waves are transformed inside it into propagating ones. This modification is achievable using a metamaterial so that the direct thermal conductance through the metamaterial is practically absent and the photovoltaic conversion of the transferred heat is not altered by the metamaterial., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
