10. Separation of single-walled carbon nanotubes by use of ionic liquid-aided capillary electrophoresis

Abstract

This paper presents a simple, highly efficient method for analyzing single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundles based on (1) ultrasound-assisted solubilization/dispersion of SWNTs in the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, (2) encapsulation of the nanotubes in sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles, and (3) analysis by capillary electrophoresis. The process by which SWNTs disperse in the ionic liquid was studied by Raman spectroscopy. No degradation of SWNTs was observed under mild sonication conditions. The shape and position changes observed in the Raman spectral bands for the nanotubes are ascribed to debundling and interaction with the ionic liquid. Separation of solubilized SWNTs was accomplished by using a 50 mM formic acid solution at pH 2.0 as background electrolyte and a potential of -10 kV. Under these conditions, separation was completed within only 4 min. Eighteen peaks for SWNTs were identified in the analysis of commercial SWNT bundles. The two types of bundles studied exhibited distinct, highly characteristic electrophoretic profiles which could be used to control SWNTs purity.

Abstract

Analytical science has gone through several turning points, one of the most decisive of which was signaled by the development and massive use of instruments for analytical purposes. One other pivotal turning point was the inception of computer science, which not only enabled the automatic control of analytical systems but also facilitated the acquisition of vast amounts of data and their processing with the aid of chemometrics. Following the growing significance of automation and miniaturization in recent times, the early 21st century is witnessing the rise of nanotechnology as a new, increasingly important, revolutionary trend in science in general and analytical science in particular. The ability to exploit molecular interactions between analytes and nanoparticles has opened up new, challenging prospects in this area. Good proof of the interest aroused by nanoparticles is the large number of papers on their use in quantum dots, fullerene, aurum nanoparticles, or carbon nanotubes published in recent years.

16. Monitoring of bacterial contamination in food samples using capillary zone electrophoresis

Abstract

A capillary electrophoresis method with UV detection is proposed for the identification and quantitation of bacterial contamination in food samples. The electrophoretic separation relies on the differential mobility of bacteria in the capillary. Electrophoretic resolution is improved by using calcium and myoinositol hexakisphosphate as specific ions that interact with the bacterial surface changing its electrical properties and electrophoretic mobility. The proposed method allows the effective separation of eight different types of bacteria in only 25 min. It was successfully used to detect the presence of bacteria in contaminated food. The precision of the analysis of real spiked samples ranges from 3.3 to 7.0%, and the overall analysis time is 7 h, which is much shorter than the 24-48 h typically required for plate counts. The validity of the method was established by comparison with the standard plate counting method.

Abstract

La adaptación de la oferta académica de postgrado al Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior en España no ha seguido el desarrollo que la lógica de la nueva ordenación de enseñanzas exigía, dando como resultado una adaptación con evidentes carencias que, aún pasando el umbral de 2010, serán temas de agenda pendiente por resolver en la reforma universitaria. El proceso para la definición del marco normativo ha seguido causes más políticos que estratégicos en el diseño de los nuevos estudios oficiales, dotando al proceso de convergencia elementos de confusión de cara a la comunidad universitaria. El marco para el desarrollo de las competencias de los estudios de postgrado y el sistema de garantía de la calidad en el mismo son dos de los temas que destacan por su deficiente desarrollo, y a los cuáles habrá que hacer frente inexcusablemente The adaptation of the post grade curricula to the European Higher Education Area has not followed a logic way based on the new studies structure approved. The results obtained shows several lacks that, once passed the 2010 goal, will be schedule issues to resolve for the higher education reform. The legislative process has followed a political way instead of a strategic in the new official studies, giving to the university community more confusion elements about the convergence. The frame for the development of the competences in the post grade studies and also the quality assessment system for these studies are two of the themes that arise for its deficient design, that universities and government must face on.
