Abstract The Muon Collider is one of the most promising future collider facilities with the potential to reach multi-TeV center-of-mass energy and high luminosity. Due to the significant Higgs boson production cross section in muon-antimuon collisions at such high energies, the collider offers an excellent opportunity for in-depth exploration of Higgs boson properties. It holds the capability to significantly advance our understanding of the Higgs sector to a very high level of precision. However, the presence of beam-induced background resulting from the decay of the beam muons poses unique challenges for detector development and event reconstruction. In this paper, the prospects for measuring various Higgs boson properties at a center-of-mass energy of 3 TeV are presented, using a detailed detector simulation in a realistic environment. The study demonstrates the feasibility of achieving high precision results with the current state-of-the-art detector design. In addition, the paper discusses the detector requirements necessary to achieve this level of accuracy.

Abstract Assuming isospin conservation, the decay of a $$c\bar{c}$$ c c ¯ vector meson into the $$\Lambda \bar{\Sigma }^0+\mathrm{c.c.}$$ Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . final state is purely electromagnetic. At the leading order, the $$c\bar{c}$$ c c ¯ vector meson first converts into a virtual photon that, then produces the $$\Lambda \bar{\Sigma }^0+\mathrm{c.c.}$$ Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . final state. Moreover, such a mechanism, i.e., the virtual photon coupling to $$\Lambda \bar{\Sigma }^0+\mathrm{c.c.}$$ Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . , is the sole intermediate process through which, in Born approximation, the reaction $$e^+e^-\rightarrow \Lambda \bar{\Sigma }^0+\mathrm{c.c.}$$ e + e - → Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . does proceed. It follows that any significant difference between the amplitudes of the processes $$c\bar{c}\rightarrow \Lambda \bar{\Sigma }^0+\mathrm{c.c.}$$ c c ¯ → Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . and $$e^+e^-\rightarrow \Lambda \bar{\Sigma }^0+\mathrm{c.c.}$$ e + e - → Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . at the $$c\bar{c}$$ c c ¯ mass must be ascribed to an isospin-violating contribution in the $$c\bar{c}$$ c c ¯ decay. In Ferroli et al. (Eur Phys J C 80: 903, 2020) we studied the decay of the $$\psi (2S)$$ ψ ( 2 S ) vector meson into $$\Lambda \bar{\Sigma }^0+\mathrm{c.c.}$$ Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . and, on the light of the large branching fraction $$\begin{aligned} \textrm{BR}_{18}(\psi (2S)\rightarrow \Lambda \bar{\Sigma }^0+\mathrm{c.c.})=(1.23\pm 0.24)\times 10^{-5}, \end{aligned}$$ BR 18 ( ψ ( 2 S ) → Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . ) = ( 1.23 ± 0.24 ) × 10 - 5 , published in the 2018 edition of the Review of Particle Physics (Tanabashi et al. in Phys Rev D 98: 030001, 2018), we claimed either the presence of a significant isospin-violating contribution or, with a lesser emphasis, a “not complete reliability of the only available datum”. In any case, we propose a new measurement. Apparently, our second and considered less serious hypothesis was the right one, indeed the branching fraction published in the 2024 edition of the Review of Particle Physics (Navas et al. in Phys Rev D 110: 030001, 2024) is $$\begin{aligned} \textrm{BR}(\psi (2S)\rightarrow \Lambda \bar{\Sigma }^0+\mathrm{c.c.})=(1.6\pm 0.7)\times 10^{-6}, \end{aligned}$$ BR ( ψ ( 2 S ) → Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . ) = ( 1.6 ± 0.7 ) × 10 - 6 , more than seven times lower with the error that increased from $$\sim 20\%$$ ∼ 20 % to $$\sim 45\%$$ ∼ 45 % .

Abstract To investigate the seasonal migratory behaviour of spinetail devil rays, Mobula mobular, across the Mediterranean Sea, we used satellite telemetry to track nine individuals between 2016 and 2021. The species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species and appears to be most vulnerable to fishing impacts when gathering in large assemblages. The only known targeted devil ray fishery harvests significant numbers each winter off Gaza. While broadly distributed during summer across the more productive areas of the western and central portions of the Mediterranean, most tracked rays showed an eastward movement towards eastern Levantine waters during the second half of the year. One individual, tagged off Gaza in March 2016, travelled to Spain before swimming back to the Levantine Sea one year later. Our study corroborates the notion that the species undergoes predictable basin-wide migrations across the Mediterranean Sea, favouring the Levantine waters in late winter and early spring, thanks to the subregion’s milder sea surface temperatures in that time of the year compared to the rest of the Mediterranean. Understanding the species’ seasonal movement pattern in the Mediterranean could support the implementation of robust place-based conservation measures, especially in light of unregulated fishing pressure.

Abstract Current literature regarding cancer risk in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) is particularly poor and controversial, even though the incidence of malignancy in some patients with RMDs is considered to be increased compared with the general population. Malignancy may be a major comorbidity in subjects with spondyloarthritis (SpA) as the result of multifactorial mechanisms, from disease pathogenesis to the iatrogenic effect of immunomodulating drugs. Several recommendations for screening and management of cancer risk have been developed in recent years with the aim of improving the different outcomes in these patients. The goal of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the currently available evidence on the risk of malignancy connected with RMDs and examine the association of SpA with cancer and the potential impact of its treatment with biologic and targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs on development of malignancy.

Abstract Background Although second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) have proven to be effective therapeutic options for patients with schizophrenia, there is a notable lack of evidence on patients’ subjective perspectives regarding their well-being, quality of life, and satisfaction with these medications. This study aimed to evaluate the treatment satisfaction and effectiveness of lurasidone on quality of life and functioning in adult patients with schizophrenia in real-world Italian clinical practice. Methods This was a multicentre, national, non-interventional, single-arm, 3-month prospective study. Patients who were naive to lurasidone treatment and whose treating physician had decided to start them on this medication were enrolled and evaluated over a 3-month period. Eligible patients were adults (≥ 18 years of age) with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia who were being treated with lurasidone (for the first time [i.e., they were lurasidone naive]) as part of routine clinical practice. Efficacy endpoints were changes in patient/caregiver treatment satisfaction (seven-point Likert scale from the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication), patient quality of life and functioning (QLS), investigator-rated global assessment of functioning (CGI-S, IAQ) after 6 weeks and 3 months of lurasidone, and number of relapses and hospitalizations. Results Sixty-one patients were enrolled and 59 completed the study. The median dosage of lurasidone at baseline was 37.00 mg/day. The median duration of titration was 86.0 days (Min 28; Max 115 days); the median number of dosage changes was 1.0. At the end of 3-month observation period, the median dose of lurasidone was 74.00 mg/day. QoL and Functioning Score showed a trend of improvement over time, reaching a mean change from baseline of 9.8 at the end of the study. According to the CGI-S, the percentage of patients who were “markedly or severely ill” showed a continuous decrease from baseline to 3 months, from 62.29% to 8.20%. Patient satisfaction increased over time, with 80.32% of patients reporting that they were somewhat, fairly, or very satisfied (including 63.93% who were completely or very satisfied) at the end of the study. No relapses/hospitalizations for psychiatric reasons were reported. Lurasidone was well tolerated with no safety concerns or discontinuations due to AEs. Conclusions Lurasidone represents a valid option for the treatment of schizophrenia and positively affects subjective well-being, quality of life and satisfaction. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, affecting approximately 1% of the adult population. Tocilizumab (TCZ), a monoclonal antibody targeting the IL-6 receptor, has emerged as an effective treatment for RA. This narrative review provides an update on TCZ’s efficacy and safety based on data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and real-world evidence (RWE). TCZ, available in subcutaneous (SC) and intravenous (IV) formulations, has shown significant benefits in RA management. Key clinical trials, including SAMURAI, OPTION, RADIATE, and TOWARD, have demonstrated TCZ’s efficacy as monotherapy and in combination with conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs), particularly in patients with inadequate responses to methotrexate or TNF inhibitors. Long-term studies, such as STREAM, have highlighted TCZ’s sustained efficacy and favorable safety profile over 5 years. The impact of TCZ on cardiovascular health, lipid profiles, and the risk of infections has been a focal point, with findings suggesting no significant increase in cardiovascular disease risk compared to other RA therapies. RWE further highlights the effectiveness of TCZ, identifying predictors of response, such as age, and emphasizes its suitability for biologic-naïve and overweight patients. Special considerations include TCZ use in RA-associated interstitial lung disease and amyloidosis. Overall, TCZ remains a pivotal option in RA treatment, with a well-established safety and efficacy profile supported by extensive clinical and real-world data.

The persistence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on substrates, and the impact of fomites on Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) transmission, is until now, widely discussed. Consequently, further investigations are required for a correct risk assessment in high-risk facilities such as hospitals, healthcare facilities (HCFs), and long-term care facilities (LTCFs). Therefore, appropriate surveillance and disinfection programs represent the best approach to guarantee the safety of these communities. This study proposes an environmental SARS-CoV-2 surfaces routine monitoring approach in HCF and communities' settings, to provide rapid and effective evaluation of surface hygienic conditions and the effectiveness of applied sanitization measures. Surfaces samples (n = 118) were collected using the SRK® kit (Copan Italia) from 2020 to 2023. Three molecular techniques were compared: Reverse Transcription Loop mediated isothermal AMPlification (RT-LAMP, Enbiotech), Reverse-Transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) (RT-qPCR, Seegene) and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR, Bio-Rad). For ddPCR, two RNA extraction methods were compared: TRIzol LS (Invitrogen) versus QIAmp Viral Mini kit (QIAGEN), showing how the latter is more suitable for surfaces. Regarding the quantitative ddPCR results, the ROC analysis allowed to reduce the manufacturer cut-off for droplets number (from 3 to 1) for the positive samples. Moreover, a new cut-off for the viral RNA copies' number/μL for each target (N1 and N2) on environmental monitoring was fixed at 2,82. The results obtained using the QIAmp kit, suggested that the N2 target is more stable in the environment and could be most suitable for the virus environmental detection. The percentage of positive samples was similar among the techniques (26% for RT-LAMP, 36% for ddPCR and 23% for RT-qPCR). Using RT-qPCR as reference method, a sensitivity (SE) of 30% for RT-LAMP and 41% for ddPCR was observed. By contrast, specificity (SP) was higher for RT-LAMP (75%) respect to ddPCR (66%). Comparing the faster RT-LAMP with the sensitive ddPCR the 26% and 74% of SE and SP for RT-LAMP, were reported. The low sensitivity for RT-LAMP and ddPCR could be explained with the use of clinical rather than environmental kits, other than the changing in the virus prevalence during the sampling campaign. Although the RT-LAMP requires improvements in term of SE and SP, this research presents an innovative environmental monitoring and prevention method for SARS-CoV-2, that could be extended to other pathogens that are under environmental surveillance.

We propose a model for the QCD running coupling constant based on the analytical inverse QCD coupling constant concept with an additional regularization in the low momentum region. Analyticity in the q2-complex plane, where q is the four-momentum transfer, is imposed by methods of the Analytic Perturbation Theory. The model incorporates a peculiar low-momentum behavior for αs(q2) as a divergence at q2=0 to retrieve color confinement, without spoiling its correct high-momentum behavior. This was achieved by means of a two-parameter regularization function, for which we considered three possible analytic expressions. In fact, within the framework of the Analytic Perturbation Theory, αs(q2) assumes a finite value for q2=0, at all perturbative orders (infrared stability), hence the infrared divergence cannot be implemented. For this reason, we found it more straightforward to work with its reciprocal, namely, εs(q2)=1/αs(q2), imposing its vanishing at the origin of the q2-complex plane via the multiplication of the aforementioned regularizing functions and the spectral density. Once the two free parameters of the regularization functions were settled by fitting to the experimental values of αs(q2) at the momenta where these data were available and reliable, the model could reproduce the QCD running coupling constant at any other momentum transferred.

We consider two fluids in a 2-dimensional region: The lower fluid occupies an infinitely depth region, while the upper fluid occupies a region with a fixed upper boundary. We study the dynamics of the interface between the two fluids (interface problem) in the limit in which the interface has a space periodic profile, is close to horizontal, and has a "long wave profile". We use a Hamiltonian normal form approach to show that up to corrections of second order, the equations are approximated by two decoupled Benjamin-Ono equations.

This article marks the 20th anniversary of the Italian Standing Group on International Relations (SGRI), reflecting on its pivotal contributions to International Relations (IR) scholarship in Italy. Founded in 2004 under the Italian Political Science Association (SISP), SGRI sought to foster collaboration among scholars, promote research excellence, and enhance the discipline’s international visibility. Over two decades, SGRI has evolved into a vibrant platform for academic exchange, supporting early-career researchers, organizing conferences, and encouraging participation in global projects. The article examines SGRI’s role in addressing historical challenges in Italian IR scholarship, such as fragmentation, limited global engagement, and marginalization within academia. By promot- ing intergenerational mentorship, facilitating high-quality research, and adopting English as its primary language for events, SGRI has successfully bridged gaps between Italian and international academic communities. Its initiatives have bolstered Italy’s presence in global IR discourse, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and enriching scholarly dialogue. Despite these achievements, challenges remain, including structural barriers in Ital- ian academia and the need for greater integration of regional studies and subfields. The article calls for enhanced institutional support, further internationalization, and greater alignment with global standards. SGRI’s journey highlights its critical role in shaping a more interconnected and impactful IR academic network in Italy.

Over recent years, the worldwide increase in infrastructure failures due to natural hazards such as landslides and earthquakes has raised significant concern. Aggravated by the effects of climate change, this issue has had a considerable impact, particularly in Italy. This study focuses on the "Villa Ilii" Viaduct on the A24 highway to analyze landslide-structure interactions, emphasizing the significant deformation risks. The methodology includes comprehensive geological, morphometric, and geophysical analyses, with findings showing cumulative deformation rates up to +2.5 cm/year at critical points. Field surveys and high-resolution SAR data analysis have identified deformation patterns linked to seasonal snow melt and temperature variations, adding a quantitative dimension to the hazard assessment. A novel component of this study is the application of Gradient Boosting Machines (GBM) for automated pattern recognition within SAR data processed using the Differential Interferometry SAR (DInSAR) technique. By leveraging datasets on snow melting patterns and cumulative radar target deformation, GBMs uncover intricate, non-linear relationships between snowmelt dynamics and ground deformation. This integration of GBMs and DInSAR data advances landslide hazard assessment by providing a robust 87% accuracy predictive model, effectively capturing environmental triggers that impact infrastructure stability. These findings contribute to more effective hazard management strategies and inform resilient infrastructure design, highlighting the study's significance in addressing climate-driven geohazards.

This data article describes the collection process of two sub-datasets comprehending images of Apis mellifera captured inside a commercial beehive (“Frame” sub-dataset, 2057 images) and at the bottom of it (“Bottom” sub-dataset, 1494 images). The data was collected in spring of 2023 (April–May) for the “Frame” sub-dataset, in September 2023 for the “Bottom” sub-dataset. Acquisitions were carried out using an instrumented beehive developed for the purpose of monitoring the colony's health status during long periods of time. The color cameras used were equipped with different lenses accordingly (liquid lenses for the internal one, standard lens of 8 mm focal length) and actuated by an embedded board, alongside red LED strips to illuminate the inside of the beehive. Images captured by the internal camera were mostly out-of-focus, thus a filtering procedure based on the adoption of focus measure operators was developed to keep only the in-focus ones. All images were manually labelled by experts using 2-class bounding boxes annotations representing full visible bees (class “bee”) and blurred or occluded bees according to the sub-dataset (“blurred_bee” or “occluded_bee” class). Annotations are provided in YOLO v8 format. The dataset can be useful for entomology research empowered by computer vision, especially for counting tasks, behavior monitoring, and pest management, since a few occurrences of Varroa destructor mites could be present in the “Frame” sub-dataset.

Predictors of outcomes are essential to identifying severe COVID-19 cases and optimizing treatment and care settings. The respiratory rate-oxygenation (ROX) index, originally introduced for predicting the failure of non-invasive support in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF), has not been extensively studied over time during hospitalization. This multicenter prospective observational study analyzed COVID-19-related AHRF patients admitted to eight Italian hospitals during the second pandemic wave. The study assessed the ROX index using receiver operator characteristic curves and areas under the curve with 95% confidence intervals to predict treatment failure, defined as endotracheal intubation (ETI) or death. A total of 227 patients (69.2% males) were enrolled, with a median arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2)/fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) ratio at admission of 248 (interquartile range: 170-295). Abstract Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the best surgical approach for treating advanced hip degeneration, providing pain relief, and improved function in most cases. In the past, MR imaging quality has been highly compromised by in-plane distortions, inadequate fat saturation, and other artifacts due to metal components of THA. Technological advancements have made pathologic conditions, which were previously hidden by periprosthetic artifacts, outstanding features due to the optimization of several sequences. To date, several short and long-term complications involving bony and soft-tissue structures may be detected through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The use of MRI with adapted sequences and protocols may drastically reduce artifacts thereby providing essential pre-operative elements for planning revision surgery of failed THA. This review has the purpose of conveying new insights to musculoskeletal radiologists about the techniques to suppress metal-related artifacts and the hallmark MRI findings of painful THA. Critical relevance statement Advancements in metal-suppression have given radiologists the opportunity to play an emerging role in THA management. This article provides technical and imaging insights into challenges that can be encountered in cases of THA, which may present complications and characteristic imaging findings. Key Points Imaging total hip arthroplasty requires adapted MRI protocol and awareness of the common complications. We have reported the available metal-suppression sequences for evaluating total hip arthroplasty. Abstract Background Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare malignancy with a poor prognosis. Current therapies are unsatisfactory and novel cures are urgently needed. In a previous drug screening, we identified thonzonium bromide (TB) as one of the most active compounds against MPM cells. Since the biological effects of TB are poorly known, in this work we departed from some hints of previous studies and investigated several hypotheses. Moreover, we evaluated the efficacy of TB in an in vivo xenograft rodent model. Methods In vitro assessment was made on five MPM (Mero-14, Mero-25, Ren, NCI-H28, MSTO-211H) and one SV40-immortalized mesothelial cell line (MeT-5A). We evaluated TB ability to affect proliferation, apoptosis, mitochondrial functions and metabolism, and the mevalonate pathway. In vivo assay was carried out on MPM-xenograft NOD-SCID mice (4 mg/kg delivered intraperitoneally, twice a week for 4 weeks) and the overall survival was analysed with Kaplan-Meier curves. Results After TB treatment, we observed the suppression of ERK 1/2 phosphorylation, the increase of BAX expression and p38 phosphorylation. TB affected Ca2+ homeostasis in both mitochondrial and cytosolic compartments, it regulated the mitochondrial functioning, respiration, and ATP production as well as the mevalonate pathway. The in vivo study showed an increased overall survival for TB treated group vs. vehicle control group (P = 0.0076). Conclusions Both in vitro and in vivo results confirmed the effect of TB on MPM and unravelled novel targets with translational potential.

This research investigates the suitability of PRISMA and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery for retrieving topsoil properties such as Organic Matter (OM), Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), and pH in croplands using different Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and signal pre-treatments. Ninety-five soil samples were collected in Quzhou County, Northeast China. Satellite images captured soil reflectance data when bare soil was visible. For PRISMA data, a Linear Mixture Model (LMM) was used to separate soil and Photosynthetic Vegetation (PV) endmembers, excluding Non-Photosynthetic Vegetation (NPV) using Band Depth values at the 2100 nm absorption peak of cellulose. Sentinel-2 bare soil reflectance spectra were obtained using thresholds based on NDVI and NBR2 indices. Results showed PRISMA data provided slightly better accuracy in retrieving topsoil nutrients than Sentinel-2. While no optimal predictive algorithm was best, absorbance data proved more effective than reflectance. PRISMA results demonstrated potential for predicting soil nutrients in real scenarios.

IntroductionIn recent years, Europe has experienced a significant flux of migrants, often hailing from regions endemic for schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis, diseases frequently overshadowed by tuberculosis (TB) in healthcare priorities. While TB remains a prevalent concern among this population, chronic schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis are frequently neglected. Motivated by this observation, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis in patients attending our TB outpatient clinic.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective, observational study spanning from June 2020 to January 2024, focusing on patients attending the TB outpatient clinic of Luigi Sacco Hospital of Milan, Italy. Serology tests were performed in patients with a history suggestive of exposure to either Schistosoma spp. or Strongyloides stercoralis.ResultsAmong the 228 patients included in the study, 84 (36.8%) individuals were born in Italy, one came from Spain, 80 (35.1%) from strongyloidiasis moderate or high endemic countries and 63 (27.6%) from areas endemic for schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis. Of these patients, 160 (70.2%) were diagnosed with tuberculosis disease, while 68 (29.8%) had tuberculosis infection. The prevalence of schistosomiasis was 26.7%, while that of strongyloidiasis was 7.8%. Notably, 3 patients tested positive for both infections.ConclusionOur study highlights the often-underestimated prevalence of schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis among migrants accessing healthcare for TB, underscoring the importance of increased awareness and targeted screening within this population.

One of the most delicate operations in the sugar beet harvesting process is removing the tops from the heads of the root crops without any mechanical damages. The aim of this study is to improve the design of the conveying and unloading system of the sugar beet topper machine. In this paper, a mathematical model of the motion of a cut beet tops particle M, along the conveying and unloading system, has been developed to support the evaluation of kinematic and design parameters, depending on the rotational speed of the thrower blade, the air flow speed, the required ejection speed of particle M, and the position of the trailer that moves alongside the harvester. It has been established that increasing the speed Va of the top particle M, which has left the end of the blade of the thrower, leads to an increase in the arc coordinate S(t) of its movement along the cylindrical section of the casing. Within the range of the speed change from 4 m·s–1 to 8 m·s–1, the value of the arc coordinate S(t) increases by 1.4 times during time t = 0.006 s. Moreover, a rapid decrease in speed V is observed with an increase in the length x of the discharge chute.

While text-based CAPTCHAs have been the predominant type of human interaction proofs (HIPs) for many years, image recognition challenges have also gained significant attention. This trend is due, on one hand, to groundbreaking advancements in solving text CAPTCHAs and, on the other hand, to the intrinsic weakness of machines in dealing with cognitive tasks such as those presented in image CAPTCHAs. In addition to classic and even human-centric image CAPTCHA solvers, deep learning has recently emerged as a significant player, providing two unprecedented and, at the same time, contradictory advantages for designers and adversaries. Designers benefit from deep learning techniques to make CAPTCHAs as hard to break as possible, while adversaries utilize deep learning algorithms to attack novel and complicated image-based challenges. Given these premises, this paper presents an analytical study on the applications of deep learning for and against image CAPTCHAs. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in the field, assisting researchers and practitioners in designing image CAPTCHAs that are both user-friendly and resilient against modern attacks.

The evaluation of direct energy inputs and the assessment of the carbon footprint of an agricultural tractor during the execution of an agricultural operation is a complex task. Methodological approaches such as field surveys and life cycle assessments can provide unreliable and non-repeatable results. This study exploits the use of numerical simulation to assess the fuel consumption of two agricultural tractors and their CO2 emissions during the execution of pesticide treatment and milling. The digital models of the Landini REX 4-120 GB and the Fendt 942 Vario were developed, starting from experimental data acquired during field tests in which the power required at the power take-off (PTO) by the respective operating machine was measured. Two custom working cycles, simulating the two agricultural operations, have been defined and simulated. The estimated fuel consumption was 7.8 L∙ha−1 and 23.2 L∙ha−1, respectively, for the Landini REX 4-120 GB during pesticide treatment and for the Fendt 942 Vario during milling. The corresponding direct energy inputs required for the two agricultural operations were equal to 300.3 MJ∙ha−1 and 893.2 MJ∙ha−1, respectively. The estimated carbon footprint was 26.5 kgCO2∙ha−1 and 68.4 kgCO2∙ha−1 for pesticide treatment and for milling, respectively. Moreover, considering the operational efficiency of the systems, an analysis of the available mechanical work supplied by the fuel was conducted.

Background and Objectives: The treatment landscape for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) has evolved significantly with the introduction of Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi), such as Tofacitinib (TOFA), which offer a new therapeutic option for patients who have failed or are intolerant to conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs). Safety concerns, particularly related to cardiovascular and cancer risks, prompted a need for additional investigation in real-world clinical settings. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness and predictors of response to TOFA in two subpopulations of RA patients, categorized by differing cardiovascular risk profiles. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective, multicenter observational study conducted as part of the BIRRA project, involving 23 Italian rheumatological referral centers. A total of 213 patients diagnosed with RA and treated with TOFA were included, with data collected on baseline demographics, clinical history, disease activity, and comorbidities. Patients were divided into high-risk and low-risk cardiovascular groups based on age (≥65 years) and the presence of at least one cardiovascular risk factor. Disease activity was assessed at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months using DAS28-ESR and DAS28-CRP. Treatment response was evaluated using intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) approaches. Predictors of low disease activity (LDA) and remission were assessed through logistic regression, and clustering analyses were used to identify subgroups of patients with different therapeutic responses. Results: The study included 213 patients, with 129 classified as high-risk. For the overall cohort, patients achieving LDA and remission at 6 months were 20% and 12%, respectively, for the ITT analysis, and 29% and 14% for the PP analysis. At 12 months, 26% of patients reached LDA, and 17% achieved remission according to ITT, while for the PP analysis, these rates were 30% and 19%, respectively. No significant differences in remission or LDA rates were observed between the high-risk and low-risk groups. In the high-risk subgroup, 17% of patients reached LDA and 9% achieved remission at 6 months (ITT analysis), while these rates increased to 22% and 13%, respectively, in the PP analysis. At 12 months, 22% achieved LDA and 13% achieved remission in the ITT analysis, while 28% and 17% did so in the PP analysis. The reduction in DAS28-ESR and DAS28-CRP scores was significant (p < 0.001) across all time points for both high-risk and low-risk patients. Logistic regression analyses revealed that none of the baseline characteristics—including age, sex, comorbidities, rheumatoid factor, anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA) positivity, initial disease severity, or treatment history—were significant predictors of remission or LDA at 6 or 12 months. The clustering analysis suggested that older patients, particularly those with worse baseline DAS28 scores, tended to show a less favorable response to treatment, potentially indicating impacts of age-related factors such as immunosenescence on therapeutic outcomes. Conclusions: Tofacitinib demonstrated similar effectiveness in both high- and low-risk cardiovascular subgroups of RA patients, with significant reductions in disease activity observed at both 6 and 12 months. Despite safety concerns related to cardiovascular risk, TOFA remained an effective treatment option across patient subgroups, with no significant differences in remission or LDA rates based on cardiovascular risk profiles. Age appeared to negatively impact treatment response, highlighting the role of immunosenescence in RA management. These findings support the use of TOFA as a personalized therapeutic option for RA, emphasizing the need for careful evaluation of cardiovascular and age-related risks in clinical decision-making.

One of the solutions contributing to the development of energy independence is the utilization of biogas as an alternative fuel for agricultural tractors. Biogas is recognized as a renewable energy source, and its usage aids in the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale. The reuse of this material/waste exemplifies the concept of a circular economy. Several models of agricultural tractors designed explicitly for biogas utilization or adaptable for its use are available in the market. This study aimed to evaluate the energy-ecological parameters of the MP tractor (T6.180 Methane Power) powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in comparison to its structurally identical counterpart fueled by Diesel (T6.180 Electro Command). Based on the Air–Fuel Ratio (AFR) coefficients for diesel and methane, as well as values of air excess ratios (λ) and the proportions of CO and CO2 emissions determined for various engine load states, the mass emission of selected exhaust components for the examined tractors was estimated. This research highlights that biogas-powered tractors hold the potential to contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture through the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, improvement in farm energy autonomy, and optimal resource utilization, closely aligned with the principles of a circular economy.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, accounting for over 9 million deaths annually. The prevalence of CAD continues to rise, driven by ageing and the increasing prevalence of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Current clinical guidelines emphasize the importance of functional tests in the diagnostic pathway, particularly for assessing the presence and severity of ischemia. While recommended tests are valuable, they may not fully capture the complex physiological responses to exercise or provide the necessary detail to tailor personalized treatment plans. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) offers a comprehensive assessment of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, and muscular systems under stress, potentially addressing these gaps and providing a more precise understanding of CAD, particularly in settings where traditional diagnostics may be insufficient. By enabling more personalized and precise treatment strategies, CPET could play a central role in the future of CAD management. This narrative review examines the current evidence supporting the use of CPET in CAD diagnosis and management and explores the potential for integrating CPET into existing clinical guidelines, considering its diagnostic and prognostic capabilities, cost-effectiveness, and the challenges associated with its adoption.

The rapid and accurate detection of SARS-CoV-2 in environmental settings is crucial for effective public health management during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study compares the performance of the Reverse Transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and the Reverse Transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) for SARS-CoV-2 detection from 100 surface samples collected in healthcare environments. The reference method, RT-qPCR, identified a percentage of 25% of positive samples, while RT-LAMP detected a percentage of 27% of positive surfaces. Our findings reveal a sensitivity of 32% and specificity of 75% for RT-LAMP, with a positive predictive value of 30% and a negative predictive value of 77%. The overall accuracy and concordance with RT-qPCR was 64% for both methods. Despite its lower sensitivity compared to RT-qPCR, RT-LAMP had an advantage due to its rapid screening and environmental surveillance, which is particularly useful for confirming negative results. These results underscore the potential of RT-LAMP not only as a valuable method in the environmental monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 but also as a system to control the sanitation process in ordinary and emergency conditions, providing further optimization and validation for its reliability in routine surveillance and outbreak response efforts.

Yield estimation is a key point theme for precision agriculture, especially for small fruits and in-field scenarios. This paper focuses on the metrological validation of a novel deep-learning model that robustly estimates both the number and the radii of grape berries in vineyards using color images, allowing the computation of the visible (and total) volume of grape clusters, which is necessary to reach the ultimate goal of estimating yield production. The proposed algorithm is validated by analyzing its performance on a custom dataset. The number of berries, their mean radius, and the grape cluster volume are converted to millimeters and compared to reference values obtained through manual measurements. The validation experiment also analyzes the uncertainties of the parameters. Results show that the algorithm can reliably estimate the number (MPE=−5%, σ=6%) and the radius of the visible portion of the grape clusters (MPE=0.8%, σ=7%). Instead, the volume estimated in px3 results in a MPE=0.4% with σ=21%, thus the corresponding volume in mm3 is affected by high uncertainty. This analysis highlighted that half of the total uncertainty on the volume is due to the camera–object distance d and parameter R used to take into account the proportion of visible grapes with respect to the total grapes in the grape cluster. This issue is mostly due to the absence of a reliable depth measure between the camera and the grapes, which could be overcome by using depth sensors in combination with color images. Despite being preliminary, the results prove that the model and the metrological analysis are a remarkable advancement toward a reliable approach for directly estimating yield from 2D pictures in the field.

Background: Lithium is a cornerstone in the treatment of bipolar disorder (BD). However, lithium use requires careful monitoring of thyroid function due to associated dysfunctions. The aim of our real-world study is to retrospectively evaluate the impact of lithium on thyroid function and how these thyroid alterations can be measured and managed. Methods: A retrospective observational study was performed on 150 patients with BD who started lithium treatment at the University Hospital of Siena. Thyroid function was assessed at baseline and after the introduction of lithium by measuring TSH, T3, and T4 levels at baseline and after 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, during which changes in psychiatric symptoms were also evaluated using specific psychometric scales. Results: Significant increases in TSH levels were observed at 3 and 6 months, while T3 and T4 levels decreased significantly at 3 months. Transient thyroid dysfunction occurred in 36.7% of patients, but normalized without the discontinuation of lithium or need for thyroid replacement therapy in most cases; however, replacement therapy was initiated in 8.7% of patients. There were no significant differences in treatment response between patients with and without thyroid abnormalities, as the abnormalities were transient or resolved. Conclusions: In our sample, lithium induced some cases of hypothyroidism, which, being transient or corrected with replacement therapy, did not interfere with symptomatic improvement. These findings underscore the necessity for continuous thyroid function monitoring during lithium therapy. Clinicians should be prepared to initiate thyroid replacement therapy, when necessary, as timely management can prevent the interruption of lithium treatment and ensure ongoing symptomatic improvement in BD patients. Future studies could include larger and more diverse populations to validate these findings further, extending the follow-up period beyond 12 months to better observe long-term thyroid function trends and management outcomes.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by recurrent episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression and is often complicated by comorbid substance use disorders (SUDs). Up to 60% of individuals with BD experience SUDs, which exacerbate mood instability and increase the risk of rapid cycling, suicide, and poor clinical outcomes. Current treatment strategies, including lithium and valproate, show limited efficacy in treating both BD and SUD. Psychotherapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) offer benefits but lack a specific focus on substances such as cannabis and cocaine. Since there is still debate on how to treat this comorbidity, there is a need to find new therapeutic options; this mini-review examines the pharmacological properties of cariprazine and its emerging role in the treatment of comorbid BD and SUD. Cariprazine, an atypical antipsychotic with partial agonism at dopamine D2 and D3 receptors, has shown promise in treating both mood symptoms and cognitive dysfunction in BD. Its unique affinity for D3 receptors, which are involved in motivation and reward processing, may offer advantages in reducing drug craving. Clinical trials indicate that cariprazine effectively treats manic, depressive, and mixed episodes in BD with a favorable side effect profile, particularly at lower doses. Preliminary results suggest its potential to reduce craving and substance use in individuals with co-occurring BD and SUD. Therefore, cariprazine, with its unique pharmacodynamic mechanism, could be further studied for the treatment of BD in comorbidity with SUD. However, evidence on the role of cariprazine in the treatment of SUDs remains limited, based primarily on case reports and animal studies. Further research, including large-scale clinical trials, is needed to determine its full efficacy in this dual diagnosis.

Electrocardiogram modifications in athletes are common and usually reflect structural and electrical heart adaptations to regular physical training, known as the athlete’s heart. However, these electrical modifications sometimes overlap with electrocardiogram findings that are characteristic of various heart diseases. A missed or incorrect diagnosis can significantly impact a young athlete’s life and potentially have fatal consequences during exercise, such as sudden cardiac death, which is the leading cause of death in athletes. Therefore, it is crucial to correctly distinguish between expected exercise-related electrocardiogram changes in an athlete and several electrocardiogram abnormalities that may indicate underlying heart disease. This review aims to serve as a practical guide for cardiologists and sports clinicians, helping to define normal and physiology-induced electrocardiogram findings from those borderlines or pathological, and indicating when further investigations are necessary. Therefore, the possible athlete’s electrocardiogram findings, including rhythm or myocardial adaptation, will be analyzed here, focusing mainly on the differentiation from pathological findings.

Abstract Intercellular adhesion is a key function for epithelial cells. The fundamental mechanisms relying on epithelial cell adhesion have been partially uncovered. Hsa-microRNA-1249-3p (hsa-miR-1249-3p) plays a role in the epithelial mesenchymal transition in carcinoma cells, but its physiological function in epithelial cells is unknown. We aimed to investigate the role and molecular mechanisms of hsa-miR-1249-3p on epithelial cell functions. Hsa-miR-1249-3p was overexpressed in human epithelial cells and uterine cervical tissues, compared to cervical carcinoma cells and precancerous tissues, respectively. Hsa-miR-1249-3p was analyzed to verify its regulatory function on Homeobox A13 (HOXA13) target gene and its downstream cell adhesion gene β-catenin. Functional experiments indicated that hsa-miR-1249-3p inhibition prompted the mRNA and protein overexpression of HOXA13 which, in turn, led to the β-catenin protein expression. Moreover, hsa-miR-1249-3p inhibition induced a strong colony forming ability in epithelial cells, suggesting the miR involvement in cell adhesion machinery. These data indicate that hsa-miR-1249-3p regulates the expression of HOXA13 and its downstream cell adhesion gene β-catenin, possible resulting in cell adhesion modification in epithelial cells. This study will allow the set-up of further investigations aimed at exploring the relationship between the hsa-miR-1249-3p/HOXA13 axis and downstream cell adhesion genes.

With the continuous intensification of marine traffic worldwide, whale-vessel collisions at sea (or “ship strikes”) have become one of the primary causes of mortality for cetaceans and a widely recognised cause of concern for human safety and economic losses. The Mediterranean Sea is a global hotspot for whale-vessel collisions, with one of the highest rates involving large cetaceans, especially the endangered fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). Evidence indicates that both species are experiencing higher chances of a fatal collision than what predictions have estimated so far, with ship strikes being the main human-induced threat in the area. Regional and international organisations have stressed the need to address the issue by investigating the projected impacts of ship strikes on whale populations and by identifying possible mitigation measures to reduce chances of collision. Amongst the most popular and feasible options, there is the improvement of animal detection during navigation. Here, we present SEADETECT, a LIFE project that aims at developing an automated detection system to reduce vessel collision risk with marine mammals and unidentified floating objects (UFOs), combining state-of-the-art and novel technologies with existing approaches in the study of large whale ecology. This detection system consists of three elements; an automated onboard detection system composed of several sensors, a real-time passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) network at sea and a real-time detection-sharing and alert system (REPCET®). In this paper, we propose the development of a mitigation measure framework tailored for the issue of collision with fin and sperm whales in the north-western Mediterranean Sea, but that has the transferability features necessary for its application in other high-risk areas for ship strikes worldwide.

IntroductionPopulation abundance is amongst the most basic and crucial parameters for the assessment of conservation status of any species. Three species of odontocetes, all represented by local subspecies, inhabit the Black Sea: the Black Sea common dolphin Delphinus delphis ponticus, the Black Sea bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus ponticus, and the Black Sea harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena relicta. Their populations are threatened by multiple factors, including overfishing of their prey, bycatch, pollution and epizootics. Despite this, there are no basinwide estimates for any cetacean species in the Black Sea.MethodsIn 2019, a systematic study was carried out under the EU CeNoBS project. Six strata were designed in the waters of Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Türkiye and Ukraine, covering most of territorial and offshore waters, which were surveyed between June 19 and July 4. A line transect distance sampling approach was used, following predefined transects within each stratum, achieving a 5% coverage of the surveyed area. A total of 7,344 kilometres of transects were surveyed recording a total of 1,744 cetacean sightings. Design-based abundance estimates were obtained using a Multiple Covariate Distance Sampling (MCDS) approach. Model-based abundance estimates were also derived using a Generalized Additive Models (GAM) approach, linking species sightings with a number of environmental covariates (e.g., bathymetric features, sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a) over a grid of 10x10 km.Results and discussionThe uncorrected (for perception and availability bias) estimates obtained through the model-based analysis were 108,283 (CV=0.07) common dolphins, 22,720 (CV=0.15) bottlenose dolphins and 93,808 (CV=0.06) harbour porpoises. These aerial surveys yielded the first insights on overall abundance, density and distribution, providing current regional baseline values and density maps for all three cetacean species of the Black Sea during the summer months, to be used for the elaboration of effective conservation measures and to address national and international requirements.

IntroductionVia mirror mechanism, motor training approaches based on the alternation of action observation and execution (i.e., Action Observation Training-AOT) promote the acquisition of motor abilities. Previous studies showed that both visual and auditory stimuli may elicit a common motor representation of music-related gestures; however, the potentialities of AOT for the acquisition of musical skills are still underexplored.MethodsTwenty-one music-naïve participants underwent two blocks of training: AOT and Key-light Observation Training (KOT). AOT consisted of the observation of a melodic sequence played on a keyboard with the right hand by an expert model, followed by participant’s imitation. Observation and execution were repeated six consecutive times (T1–T6). KOT followed the same procedure, except for the visual content of the stimulus, depicting the sequential highlighting of the piano keys corresponding to the melody. The rate of correct notes (C), the trainee-model similarity of key-pressure strength (S), and the trainee-model consistency of note duration (R) were collected across T1–T6.ResultsBoth AOT and KOT improved musical performance. Noteworthy, AOT showed a higher learning magnitude relative to KOT in terms of C and S.DiscussionAction Observation Training promotes the acquisition of key elements of melodic sequences, encompassing not only the accurate sequencing of notes but also their expressive characteristics, such as key-pressure dynamics. The convergence of listening and observation of actions onto a shared motor representation not only explains several pedagogical approaches applied in all musical cultures worldwide, but also enhances the potential efficacy of current procedures for music training.

This data collection presents a comprehensive five-year monitoring record from a historic building located in Settequerce, South Tyrol (Italy). The 17th-century building, characterized by a stone masonry, was subject to a retrofit in 2017 that introduced a wood fiber insulation panel to the inner side of the building's walls. As part of the renovation process, a monitoring system was installed. This system incorporated internal, external, and in-wall sensors, which were strategically placed at three different points within the wall to evaluate the effects of the insulation on the stratigraphy. This setup ensured the continuous collection of climatic data, both from the exterior and interior environments, as well as from within the renovated wall's stratigraphy. This comprehensive dataset delivers new insights into the long-term performance of retrofit interventions. The significant potential for reuse of this dataset makes it a substantial foundation for future studies on energy-efficient retrofitting and the preservation of historical structures in comparable climate (Climate E Köppen). It is expected to inform data-driven decisions in future renovation and preservation projects of comparable historic buildings.

A number of marine species in the Mediterranean are threatened by the presence of several pressure factors, which include climate change, collisions with vessels, entanglement and ingestion of marine litter, especially plastic. Risk reduction policies can only be conceived starting from an accurate analysis of the exposure to such pressure factors. To estimate spatial abundance of both marine species and plastic litter and to assess the exposure risk, a two-stage analysis approach was applied, using aerial survey data from the ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative (ASI), in synergy with the Plastic Busters MPAs (PB MPAs) project. First, a detection function was fitted to observation data to obtain detection probabilities for individuals, then a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) was employed to estimate the spatial distribution of relative abundance, based on survey observations. A bivariate Local Indicator of Spatial Association (LISA) was then applied to the maps of relative abundance to derive risk maps of exposure of marine species to marine litter. The maps, obtained with a spatial resolution of about 10 km, allow us to identify areas with the highest neighboring abundance of taxa and marine litter, in particular for the MPAs studied by the PB MPAs project, which include the North-Western Mediterranean (Pelagos Sanctuary and Tuscan Archipelago), the Ionian and Aegean Sea (Zakynthos), and the Strait of Sicily (Cabrera Archipelago).

Abstract A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

In mariculture facilities, bacterial infections pose significant production challenges, with potentially catastrophic impacts on fish species. Bacterial co-infections are a widespread phenomenon in the natural marine environment, although their impact on aquatic organisms remains poorly investigated. This study aimed to detail the pathological findings associated with a natural bacterial co-infection caused by three different pathogens, namely Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida, Tenacibaculum maritimum and Vibrio sp., as the cause of mass mortality in European sea bass. The fish had been reared in open-net cages in Sicily and later transferred for experimental research purposes to a user establishment after immunization with an inactivated vaccine. Macroscopic, cytological and histopathological examinations were performed on 109 animals, and bacterial species were identified by the 16S rRNA gene. Overall, ulcerative skin lesions, necrotizing myositis and tail rot with occasional tail loss were associated with tenacibaculosis and vibriosis, while P. damselae subsp. piscicida mainly caused granulomatous inflammation in the spleen and head kidney. Finally, an injection site reaction due to the oil-adjuvanted vaccine administered intraperitoneally was observed in the abdominal fat. Understanding the impact of bacterial pathogens is essential to manage the health and welfare of farmed fish, and the importance of a good health monitoring program cannot be overstated to avoid outbreaks and the possible emergence of new pathogens due to the intensification of the production systems, antibiotic resistance and climate changes. The study would also highlight the importance of the quarantine period when animals supplied for research come from aquaculture farms and how the main goal in the near future should be to better define the procedures to provide completely pathogen-free animals.

Winter is the season of main concern for beekeepers since the temperature, humidity, and potential infection from mites and other diseases may lead the colony to death. As a consequence, beekeepers perform invasive checks on the colonies, exposing them to further harm. This paper proposes a novel design of an instrumented beehive involving color cameras placed inside the beehive and at the bottom of it, paving the way for new frontiers in beehive monitoring. The overall acquisition system is described focusing on design choices towards an effective solution for internal, contactless, and stress-free beehive monitoring. To validate our approach, we conducted an experimental campaign in 2023 and analyzed the collected images with YOLOv8 to understand if the proposed solution can be useful for beekeepers and what kind of information can be derived from this kind of monitoring, including the presence of Varroa destructor mites inside the beehive. We experimentally found that the observation point inside the beehive is the most challenging due to the frequent movements of the bees and the difficulties related to obtaining in-focus images. However, from these images, it is possible to find Varroa destructor mites. On the other hand, the observation point at the bottom of the beehive showed great potential for understanding the overall activity of the colony.

Despite its high importance for crop yield prediction and monitoring, early-season crop mapping is severely hampered by the absence of timely ground truth. To cope with this issue, this study aims at evaluating the capability of PRISMA hyperspectral satellite images compared with Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery to produce early- and in-season crop maps using consolidated machine and deep learning algorithms. Results show that the accuracy of crop type classification using Sentinel-2 images is meaningfully poor compared with PRISMA (14% in overall accuracy (OA)). The 1D-CNN algorithm, with 89%, 91%, and 92% OA for winter, summer, and perennial cultivations, respectively, shows for the PRISMA images the highest accuracy in the in-season crop mapping and the fastest algorithm that achieves acceptable accuracy (OA 80%) for the winter, summer, and perennial cultivations early-season mapping using PRISMA images. Moreover, the 1D-CNN algorithm shows a limited reduction (6%) in performance, appearing to be the best algorithm for crop mapping within operational use in cross-farm applications. Machine/deep learning classification algorithms applied on the test fields cross-scene demonstrate that PRISMA hyperspectral time series images can provide good results for early- and in-season crop mapping.

Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SAB) is a life-threatening bloodstream infection. Improved adherence to quality-of-care indicators (QCIs) can significantly enhance patient outcomes. This quasi-experimental study evaluated the impact of a bundle of interventions on QCI adherence in adult patients with SAB. Additionally, a molecular rapid diagnostic test (mRDT) for S. aureus and methicillin resistance was introduced during weekdays. We compared pre-intervention (January–December 2022) and post-intervention (May 2023–April 2024) data on QCI adherence and time to appropriate treatment. A total of 56 and 40 SAB episodes were included in the pre- and post-intervention periods, respectively. Full QCI adherence significantly increased from 28.6% to 67.5% in the post-intervention period (p < 0.001). The mRDT diagnosed SAB in eight cases (26.6%), but the time to achieve appropriate target therapy did not improve in the post-intervention period (54 h (IQR 30–74) vs. 72 h (IQR 51–83), p = 0.131). The thirty-day mortality rate was comparable between the two periods (17.9% vs. 12.5%, p = 0.476). This study demonstrates that a bundle of interventions can substantially improve adherence to SAB management QCIs.

Biologging and habitat modelling are key tools supporting the development of conservation measures and mitigating the effects of anthropogenic pressures on marine species. Here, we analysed satellite telemetry data and foraging habitat preferences in relation to chlorophyll-a productivity fronts to understand the movements and behaviour of endangered Mediterranean fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) during their spring–summer feeding aggregation in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea. Eleven individuals were equipped with Argos satellite transmitters across 3 years, with transmissions averaging 23.5 ± 11.3 days. Hidden Markov Models were used to identify foraging behaviour, revealing how individuals showed consistency in their use of seasonal core feeding grounds; this was supported by the distribution of potential foraging habitat. Importantly, tracked whales spent most of their time in areas with no explicit protected status within the study region. This highlights the need for enhanced time- and place-based conservation actions to mitigate the effects of anthropogenic impacts for this species, notably ship strike risk and noise disturbance in an area of exceptionally high maritime traffic levels. These findings strengthen the need to further assess critical habitats and Important Marine Mammal Areas that are crucial for focused conservation, management and mitigation efforts.

The “ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative” (ASI) is a pilot programme aimed at establishing an integrated and coordinated monitoring system for cetaceans across the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic (hereafter “ACCOBAMS”) area. Conducted in coordination with Mediterranean coastal countries, it supports the implementation of European and regional policies, in particular the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the Ecosystem Approach process. In summer 2018, a synoptic survey was conducted across the Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area, combining visual monitoring from aircrafts with visual and passive acoustic monitoring from vessels. Species density and abundance were estimated through design-based approach in a line-transect sampling framework. Based on data arising from the aerial survey only, uncorrected design-based abundance was obtained for striped (N=426,744, CV=0.13), common (N=65,359, CV=0.4), bottlenose (N=63,333, CV=0.17), and Risso´s dolphins (N=26,006, CV=0.3), Cuvier’s beaked whales (N=2,929, CV=0.4) and long-finned pilot whales (N=5,540 CV=0.4). A merged category of either striped or common dolphins resulted in 212,828 individuals (CV=0.26). Fin whales abundance of 1,749 animals (CV=0.3) was corrected for both availability and perception biases and resulted in 3,282 (CV=0.31). The ASI survey offers an overall picture of the distribution and abundance of cetaceans throughout the Mediterranean basin, providing robust estimates to be considered as a baseline for future regional systematic monitoring programmes. The ASI survey is the first step towards establishing a long-term monitoring program across the entire ACCOBAMS area, and, as such, it sets the basis for further future basin-wide monitoring efforts using systematic, shared, coordinated and comparable methods. The information gathered will further enhance knowledge on cetacean status, facilitating the development of informed conservation and mitigation measures, as well as supporting the implementation of international obligations. Furthermore, the outcomes of this survey will support both place- and threat-based conservation efforts in the ACCOBAMS area, through the identification of Important Marine Mammal Areas and Cetacean Critical Habitats. Here the results of the ASI survey are presented and discussed alongside proposed management and conservation actions aimed at ensuring the persistence of cetacean populations in the region.

The distribution of wild animals and their monitoring over large areas raises many logistical and technical difficulties that hinder the collection of observation data. The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has increased significantly in recent years. QGIS, an open-source GIS software dedicated to the processing of geospatial data, enables the development of dedicated plugins for specific workflows. The open-source PelaSIG plugin has been developed in Python for QGIS 3 to facilitate and standardise the different steps before and after distance sampling surveys. It brings together a set of tools for survey preparation, automatic data checking, visualisation and presentation of survey effort and sightings to provide an adapted workflow. This plugin is currently designed to process dedicated aerial datasets collected with the SAMMOA software during marine megafauna surveys (i.e., marine mammals, seabirds, elasmobranchs, sea turtles, etc.). Here, we first describe the different tools already available, and then, we present an application with the dataset from the aerial survey of the ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative (ASI) conducted in 2018 over the Mediterranean Sea and using a multi-target protocol.

Acoustic surveys for sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were conducted in the Mediterranean Sea in summer 2018 as part of the vessel-based component of the ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative (ASI). Equal-spaced zigzag transects provided uniform coverage of key sperm whale habitats and were surveyed using a towed hydrophone array deployed from a research vessel at speeds of 5-8 knots. A total of 14,039 km of tracklines were surveyed in the western basin, Hellenic Trench and Libyan waters, with an acoustic coverage of 10% realised for sperm whales. During these surveys, 254 individual sperm whales were detected on the trackline, with an additional 66 individuals off-track. Sperm whales were only seen ten times on-track, with an additional 16 off-track sightings. Estimates of slant range to echolocating whales were used to derive density estimates through both design- and model-based distance sampling methodologies. An acoustic availability of 0.912 (sd = 0.036) was derived from via published models. When correcting for availability bias, a design-based abundance estimates of 2,673 individuals (95% CI 1,739-4,105; CV = 0.21) was derived for the surveyed blocks, which incorporated most known sperm whale habitat in the Mediterranean Sea. The equivalent model-based estimate was 2,825 whales (2,053-3,888; CV = 0.16). Over 97% of detected whales were in the western basin, with highest densities in the Algerian and Liguro-Provencal Basins between Algeria and Spain/France. In the eastern basin, detections were sparse and concentrated along the Hellenic Trench. A density surface modelling (DSM) exercise identified location and benthic aspect as being the most instructive covariates for predicting whale abundance. Distance sampling results were used in a power analysis to quantify the survey effort required to identify population trends. In the most extreme scenario modelled (10% per annum decline with decennial surveys), the population could have dropped by 90% before the decline was identified with high statistical power. Increasing the regularity of surveys would allow population trends to be detected more expediently. Mediterranean sperm whales are listed as Endangered on the IUCN’s Red List and the need for urgent conservation measures to reduce injury and mortality remains paramount for this unique sub-population.

Objectives: The persistence in therapy of rheumatoid arthritis drugs and particularly bDMARD is a limiting factor for their long-term use. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) may not reflect real-world contexts due to strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. Baricitinib, which targets both JAK1 and JAK2, has been used in Italy for several years. The aim of this multi-center study is to assess the real world persistence on therapy of baricitinib in RA patients and to identify predictive factors of baricitinib's survival rate. Methods: This is a retrospective, multicentric, Italian, longitudinal study. All patients were enrolled according to the following criteria: a) age ≥ 18 years old; b) diagnosed with RA according 2010 ACR/EULAR classification criteria; c) treated with baricitinib. In order to describe baricitinib clinical efficacy, the survival rate was evaluated by The Kaplan–Meier curve. Then, predictive factors of drug retention rate were assessed by performing the Cox analysis, identifying which risk factors influenced treatment persistence. Results: Overall, we included 478 patients treated with baricitinib. Among them, 380 (79.5%) were females. Baricitinib's survival rate was 94.6% at 6 months, 87.9% at 12 months, 81.7% at 24 months and 53.4% at 48 months. The Cox analysis regression showed that a higher bDMARDs/tsDMARD line of therapy seems to be a negative prognostic factor for the drug retention rate (HR 1.26 CI 95% 1.07–1.49, p = 0.006. Conclusion: Real-life study confirms baricitinib effectiveness up to 4 years, but previous treatment with bDMARDs was a negative prognostic factor for its survival rate.

Objectives The Bronchiolitis Endotracheal Surfactant Study (BESS) is a randomised controlled trial to determine the efficacy of endo-tracheal surfactant therapy for critically ill infants with bronchiolitis. To explore acceptability of BESS, including approach to consent within a limited time frame, we explored parent and staff experiences of trial involvement in the first two bronchiolitis seasons to inform subsequent trial conduct.Design A mixed-method embedded study involving a site staff survey, questionnaires and interviews with parents approached about BESS.Setting Fourteen UK paediatric intensive care units.Participants Of the 179 parents of children approached to take part in BESS, 75 parents (of 69 children) took part in the embedded study. Of these, 55/69 (78%) completed a questionnaire, and 15/69 (21%) were interviewed. Thirty-eight staff completed a questionnaire.Results Parents and staff found the trial acceptable. All constructs of the Adapted Theoretical Framework of Acceptability were met. Parents viewed surfactant as being low risk and hoped their child’s participation would help others in the future. Although parents supported research without prior consent in studies of time critical interventions, they believed there was sufficient time to consider this trial. Parents recommended that prospective informed consent should continue to be sought for BESS. Many felt that the time between the consent process and intervention being administered took too long and should be ‘streamlined’ to avoid delays in administration of trial interventions. Staff described how the training and trial processes worked well, yet patients were missed due to lack of staff to deliver the intervention, particularly at weekends.Conclusion Parents and staff supported BESS trial and highlighted aspects of the protocol, which should be refined, including a streamlined informed consent process. Findings will be useful to inform proportionate approaches to consent in future paediatric trials where there is a short timeframe for consent discussions.Trial registration number ISRCTN11746266.

Abstract Action Observation Training (AOT) promotes the acquisition of motor abilities. However, while the cortical modulations associated with the AOT efficacy are well known, few studies investigated the AOT peripheral neural correlates and whether their dynamics move towards the observed model during the training. We administered seventy-two participants (randomized into AOT and Control groups) with training for learning to grasp marbles with chopsticks. Execution practice was preceded by an observation session, in which AOT participants observed an expert performing the task, whereas controls observed landscape videos. Behavioral indices were measured, and three hand muscles' electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded and compared with the expert. Behaviorally, both groups improved during the training, with AOT outperforming controls. The EMG trainee-model similarity also increased during the training, but only for the AOT group. When combining behavioral and EMG similarity findings, no global relationship emerged; however, behavioral improvements were "locally" predicted by the similarity gain in muscles and action phases more related to the specific motor act. These findings reveal that AOT plays a magnetic role in motor learning, attracting the trainee's motor pattern toward the observed model and paving the way for developing online monitoring tools and neurofeedback protocols.

Abstract Volcano-seismic signals can help for volcanic hazard estimation and eruption forecasting. However, the underlying mechanism for their low frequency components is still a matter of debate. Here, we show signatures of dynamic strain records from Distributed Acoustic Sensing in the low frequencies of volcanic signals at Vulcano Island, Italy. Signs of unrest have been observed since September 2021, with CO2 degassing and occurrence of long period and very long period events. We interrogated a fiber-optic telecommunication cable on-shore and off-shore linking Vulcano Island to Sicily. We explore various approaches to automatically detect seismo-volcanic events both adapting conventional algorithms and using machine learning techniques. During one month of acquisition, we found 1488 events with a great variety of waveforms composed of two main frequency bands (from 0.1 to 0.2 Hz and from 3 to 5 Hz) with various relative amplitudes. On the basis of spectral signature and family classification, we propose a model in which gas accumulates in the hydrothermal system and is released through a series of resonating fractures until the surface. Our findings demonstrate that fiber optic telecom cables in association with cutting-edge machine learning algorithms contribute to a better understanding and monitoring of volcanic hydrothermal systems.

Bone involvement promoted by aging and accidents has raised interest in biomaterials and biofabrication technologies for bone regeneration purposes. Thus, 3D printing technology has gained prominence in the production of scaffolds due to its versatility in producing complex geometries with interconnected pores. In this work, composite scaffolds of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), bioglass (BG) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were produced by 3D printing, using hexagonal, honeycomb-like geometry interspersed. The samples were analyzed in terms of chemical structure, crystallinity and morphology using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The thermal stability of the composite was evaluated by thermogravimetry and the mechanical properties by compression tests. The cell viability was determined by Alamar Blue. The results that raman spectroscopy confirmed the interaction of BG in the polymer matrix by new peaks in the spectrum between 1400 and 2600 cm−1 and the presence of the D, G and 2D bands of the CNTs. In terms of compressive strength, PLA scaffolds with 2 mm inner spacing demonstrated higher compressive strength of 14.88 ± 2.35 MPa, while PLA/CNT higher apparent compressive modulus of 0.58 ± 0.36 GPa. In cell viability, statistical tests showed that there was no significant difference between scaffolds with 2 and 4 mm inner spacing.
