1. What AI 'art' can teach us about art

Abstract

In the last years, the use of the words “AI art”, i.e. art produced by artificial intelligence, has exponentially increased. Sometimes, they have been used without philosophical awareness, from public discourse to strictly scientific and technological literature. Sometimes, they have started entering the philosophical debate, from the philosophy of technology to the philosophy of art. In what follows, I shall reflect upon AI art by combining my expertise in both the philosophy of technology and the philosophy of art as what has characterised my work as a philosopher over the years. More precisely, I shall reflect upon AI art as an opportunity to further question what we mean when we use the word “art”. After a brief literature review (first section), I shall specify what kind of AI art I consider (second section). In the third section, I shall analyse the most important reason why AI artefacts are defined as art. In the fourth and fifth sections, I shall use thought experiments to argue that AI artefacts cannot be defined as art. And, in the sixth section, I shall conclude by questioning what the use of the words “AI art” can show us about both art and our technological era.

Between 1942 and 1943 seventeen important Italian architects published in “Domus”, which is one of the most prestigious journals of architecture, the designs of their ideal houses. The analysis of their proposals is singularly instructive for those philosophers who are interested in reasoning on the notion of ideal: the results of a precise concrete use of it clarify its philosophical meaning both in regard with the notion of ideal in general and in regard with the notion of ideal human being in particular, if it is true that these architects’ exercises of imagination prove that there is no thought of ideal house if there is no thought of ideal human being as its foundation.

The article: 1. analyzes the Anglo-American philosophical works which, in the last thirty years, focus on the notion of beauty by making reference to Kant’s work (in particular, Beauty restored by Mary Mothersill, Only a promise of happiness: the place of be­auty in a world of art by Alexander Nehamas and Beauty by Roger Scruton); 2. argues that choosing Kant’s work means choosing a strategy which opens to a notion of beauty which is relative, but not relativistic, subjective, but not anarchic, that is, universal, but not absolute; 3. argues that the most powerful tool Kant introduces to make it possible relativizing the way (i.e., the form of beauty in a given space and in a given time) not to relativize the aim (i.e., the meaning of beauty, which is actually quite stable in the history of Western culture) may be his notion of ideal (which is almost ignored in the contemporary Anglo-American philosophical works), since it includes, and does not exclude, the most relative, particular and variable cases in its very genesis.

6. Mathematics and geometry towards ideality in «Domus»’s ideal houses

Abstract

Between 1942 and 1943 the editor of the journal «Domus» invited the most important Italian architects to design their ideal houses: fifteen projects designed by seventeen architects were published. They are most instructive to try to understand, firstly, what the philosophical notion of ideal means and, secondly, why mathematical and geometric tools are extensively used to work on ideality, namely, to design ideal houses. The first part of the article focuses on the philosophical foundations of ideality and, after an overview of the fifteen projects, on the use of the golden ratio in two particularly meaningful cases. The second part of the article focuses on the cases in which there is a hidden use of the golden ratio, on the use of the modulus and on the use of the number 2.

Abstract

The relationship between beauty and utility in architecture seems more puzzling now than in the past. In particular, contemporary culture frequently argues a paradoxical antagonism between the former and the latter: it seems that the more we hide, and even deny, the dimension of the utility of an architectural object, the more we have the possibility to increase the dimension of its beauty. Reasoning about the meaning of the notion of shape, divided into morphe (concrete, real) and eidos (abstract, ideal), can get us to a possible solution, according to which speaking about an eidos which is heteronomous and referential, and responds to the needs and the aspirations of those who interact with the architectural object, means speaking about an eidos that includes, and does not exclude, the idea that the architectural object is useful to the human demands: something that we might call “human measure”. Then, an architectural object can be beautiful if its aesthetic dimension facilitates, and does not obstruct, its utility, because facilitating its utility means facilitating an essential part of its identity. Besides, the relationship between morphe and eidos can be instructive also about the case of a morphe which seems to generate a new eidos and about the case of the possible utility of a decoration.

25. Adolescenti in transizione nei servizi di salute mentale: uno studio di follow-up

Abstract

Scopi. Descrivere le caratteristiche degli adolescenti con disturbi psichici e comportamentali residenti nel territorio dell'Azienda USL di Bologna, dimessi dal servizio di Neuropsichiatria Infanzia e Adolescenza (NPIA) dal 2006 al 2015. Individuare i fattori predittivi della prosecuzione delle cure nei Centri di Salute Mentale (CSM). Metodi Studio di coorte retrospettiva con un follow-up di tre anni, basato sui dati dei sistemi informativi NPIA e CSM. Sono state effettuate due analisi multivariate per identificare i fattori predittivi del ricorso al CSM entro tre anni e della transizione entro il primo anno dalla dimissione. Risultati La coorte è costituita da 2594 adolescenti di almeno 15 anni dimessi dal servizio NPIA, in maggioranza maschi. Quasi l'80% è stato dimesso prima di aver raggiunto 17 anni; circa il 59% ha ricevuto diagnosi di ritardo mentale o di disturbi dello sviluppo psicologico specifici/misti. Nei tre anni successivi alla dimissione ha fatto ricorso al CSM quasi un quinto della coorte (489 soggetti), di cui più di metà dei casi (n=277) in transizione entro il primo anno. Sono risultati fattori predittivi del ricorso al CSM la nazionalità italiana, l'età alla dimissione di almeno 17 anni, più di dieci anni di trattamento, più di sette prestazioni nell'ultimo anno, disturbi psichici o comportamentali maggiori. I fattori predittivi della transizione entro un anno dalla dimissione NPIA sembrano in gran parte analoghi, con tre eccezioni: la nazionalità italiana perde significatività, tra i gruppi diagnostici sono solo i disturbi dello sviluppo psicologico specifici/misti a mostrare probabilità inferiori, mentre emerge come fattore predittivo avere avuto la dimissione negli ultimi sei anni del decennio. Conclusioni Analogamente a quanto riportato da altre indagini, il ricorso al CSM riguarda una minoranza di adolescenti dimessi dal servizio NPIA. Trattamenti NPIA intensi e prolungati e disturbi gravi appaiono i principali fattori predittivi. La maggior probabilità per i dimessi negli ultimi sei anni del decennio di transitare al CSM in continuità di cura può essere ascrivibile ai miglioramenti organizzativi apportati con il consolidamento di pratiche e procedure condivise per il passaggio dei casi. Tuttavia rimangono aperti interrogativi sui gap di cura e sulle azioni necessarie per superarli.

Abstract

We continuously talk about autonomous technologies. But how can words qualifying technologies be the very same words chosen by Kant to define what is essentially human, i.e. being autonomous? The article focuses on a possible answer by reflecting upon both etymological and philosophical issues, as well as upon the case of autonomous vehicles. Most interestingly, on the one hand, we have the notion of (human) “autonomy”, meaning that there is a “law” that is “self-given”, and, on the other hand, we have the notion of (technological) “automation”, meaning that there is something “offhand” that is “self-given”. Yet, we are experiencing a kind of twofold shift: on the one hand, the shift from defining technologies in terms of automation to defining technologies in terms of autonomy and, on the other hand, the shift from defining humans in terms of autonomy to defining humans in terms of automation. From a philosophical perspective, the shift may mean that we are trying to escape precisely from what autonomy founds, i.e. individual responsibility of humans that, in the Western culture, have been defined for millennia as rational and moral decision-makers, even when their decisions have been the toughest. More precisely, the shift may mean that we are using technologies, and in particular emerging algorithmic technologies, as scapegoats that bear responsibility for us by making decisions for us. Moreover, if we consider the kind of emerging algorithmic technologies that increasingly surround us, starting from autonomous vehicles, then we may argue that we also seem to create a kind of technological divine that, by being always with us through its immanent omnipresence, omniscience, omnipotence and inscrutability, can always be our technological scapegoat freeing us from the most unbearable burden of individual responsibility resulting from individual autonomy.

The path outlined in the book "Estetica e natura umana" (2019) and some recent articles by Giovanni Matteucci is aimed at re-establishing the continuity that exists between various aspects and modalities connoting human experience: a continuity, the latter, that according to Matteucci has been undermined by a centuries-long dualistic philosophical attitude towards human nature as such. On this basis, this Forum puts his original philosophical conception to the test. The topics and problems called into question span from the relation to the traditions of pragmatism and phenomenology to enactivism, from the question of aesthetic properties to the role of the body in aesthetic experience, from the relation between perception and language to technology.

Abstract

The aim of the article is reflecting on a fundamental epistemological issue which characterises our present technological progress: where are we heading to, as humankind, while we are progressively externalising our most crucial decision processes towards algorithms, from which decisive data, coming from human experience and mind (including the very experience of human abilities), are left out? By reflecting on some cases, I shall try to argue that the most puzzling issue which engineers and philosophers should be aware that they have to jointly challenge may be that what we are actually doing through algorithmic automatisation is developing a novel human condition, according to which: (1) we are progressively thinking that algorithmic abstraction is always better than mental abstraction, because, at least in the Western culture, we come from a history of a progressive restriction of the best use of our minds to the realm of rationality, first, then to the realm of computation, second, and then to the realm of algorithmic automatisation, third, which finally exceeds our minds and (2) in doing so, we are progressively externalising not only human contents, but also human abilities, i.e., we are progressively atrophying ourselves, by becoming creatures who are progressively delegating the core of their very essence, which has always included the epistemological ability, together with the ethical courage, of making complex decisions on both our lives and the others’ lives.

Predicting our future as individuals is central to the role of much emerging technology, from hiring algorithms that predict our professional success (or failure) to biomarkers that predict how long (or short) our healthy (or unhealthy) life will be. Yet, much in Western culture, from scripture to mythology to philosophy, suggests that knowing one's future may not be in the subject's best interests and might even lead to disaster. If predicting our future as individuals can be harmful as well as beneficial, why are we so willing to engage in so much prediction, from cradle to grave?This book offers a philosophical answer, reflecting on seminal texts in Western culture to argue that predicting our future renders much of our existence the automated effect of various causes, which, in turn, helps to alleviate the existential burden of autonomously making sense of our lives in a more competitive, demanding, accelerated society. An exploration of our tendency in a technological era to engineer and so rid ourselves of that which has hitherto been our primary reason for being – making life plans for a successful future, while faced with epistemological and ethical uncertainties – Predicted Humans will appeal to scholars of philosophy and social theory with interests in questions of moral responsibility and meaning in an increasingly technological world.

This volume collects the best papers presented at the 2019 Conference SIEV (Italian Society of Appraisal and Valuation) on the Science of Evaluation foundations, actuality, and prospects. The book consists of twenty-six papers and is organized into four parts: the first one collects reflections on the nature of the value judgement, on the truth of the evaluative statement, and on the authenticity its contents, the values; the next three present operational experiences in the three fields of natural, urban and cultural heritage where the knowledge of the value of the human space, supports decisions and policies, highlighting feature concerning: value and valuations in the dialectic between earth and the city; the value bearers between heuristic and normatively; the role of valuation for the complementarity of rules and creativity. The book is being published in the midst of the new radical transformations of the equilibrium between social system and environment generated by the serious and unexpected crises of the third decade of this century. This chapter provides a critical reflection on the notions of risk and uncertainty and their relevance in philosophy and in urban planning. Decision making under conditions of risk and of uncertainty are differentiated and discussed from a philosophical perspective. Then, the diverging applications of risk and uncertainty in both philosophy and urban planning are analysed. We hold the view that cities are fundamentally uncertain systems that require new forms of reasoning and innovative methods of scenario building and planning in order to face the challenges of urban uncertainty. An integrated approach towards a philosophy of urban planning is outlined.

Abstract

The study presented the initial report of a project regarding the implementation of the Coping Power Program in Italian community hospitals, and the program’s ability to reduce externalizing behavioral problems in children with a Disruptive Behavior Disorder diagnosis. Usually, interventions for children are implemented by a number of therapists with different personal characteristics, which therefore influence the implementation quality of an intervention. That said, the present study aimed to establish whether the insecure attachment styles of therapists predict unfavorable outcomes for children treated with the Coping Power Program. The sample included 80 children with a Disruptive Behavior Disorder diagnosis and 16 therapists. The results showed that the change in children’s aggressive behavioral problems was significantly related to the levels of the therapist’s preoccupation with relationships. Higher levels of change in aggression (where a higher value means that the aggression at the end of the treatment is higher than aggression at the baseline evaluation) are associated with higher levels of therapist’s preoccupied attachment style (anxious attachment style). This study provided some preliminary evidence that therapists need to be sensitive to their own attachment experiences when delivering therapy for children.

The bacchantic feast, especially as it is described in Euripides’s Bacchae, is a powerful example of what may be thought of as the most essential cornerstone of Wes- tern culture: the dualism between the dimension of reality (represented by Pentheus) and the dimension of ideality (represented by the bacchantic feast). In particular, why must the former die after having seen the latter? That is, why the dimension of idea- lity (as well as the dimension of the sacred) can be essential, and even a saviour, for the dimension of reality (as well as for the dimension of the profane) if and only if the dualism between them is rigorously respected? I shall try to answer this question, and to use my answer as a clue to start investigating another essential structure of the dualism between reality and ideality which founds Western culture, by passing from its religious meaning to its epistemological meaning.

Abstract

In the present study parenting stress and the broader phenotype are investigated in two highly common developmental disorders, namely Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and specific reading impairment (dyslexia). Within a total sample of 130 parents, 27 were parents of children with ADHD (P-ADHD), 38 were parents of children with a diagnosis of dyslexia (P-DYS) and the other 65 participants were parents of children with typical development (P-TD). A battery of cognitive tasks was administered which included verbal and non-verbal Intellectual Quotient (IQ), reading speed (passage and nonwords), verbal fluency and the Attention Network Task (ANT). Reading history, symptoms of ADHD in adults and parenting stress were measured through questionnaires. Group differences evidenced that the P-DYS group had lower scores in the reading tasks, in the verbal fluency task and in the reading history questionnaire. Conversely, the P-ADHD group had more transversal cognitive weaknesses (IQ, reading tasks, verbal fluency) and the highest scores in parenting stress and ADHD symptoms, together with poor reading history. The groups did not differ in the ANT task. Parenting stress was predicted, on the whole sample, by lower socioeconomic status (SES) and number of family members and higher ADHD symptoms. Abstract

In Technology and Anarchy: A Reading of Our Era, Simona Chiodo argues that our technological era can be read as the most radical form of anarchism ever experienced. People are not only removing the role of the expert as a mediator, but also trying, for the first time in history, to replace the role of a transcendent god itself by creating, especially through information technology, a totally immanent technological entity characterized by the typical ontological prerogatives of the divine: omnipresence (by being everywhere), omniscience (by knowing everything, especially about us), omnipotence (by having power, especially over us), and inscrutability. Chiodo proposes a novel view of our technological era by reading it as the last step of a precise trajectory of Western thought, i.e. as the most radical form of anarchism we have ever experienced, due to the crisis of the founding epistemological relationship between ideality and reality. By doing this, Chiodo helps fill the gap between technological innovation and the humanities, which is becoming an emerging research goal that is more and more urgent in order to face the greatest challenges of our present and future.

Abstract

The notion of ideal is surely one of the most important legacies of Western philosophy, yet it has been much neglected by contemporary philosophy, probably because of the negative destiny it has suffered during the last century, by being firstly abused through forms of totalitarianism and secondly censured through forms of anarchism. But there are two interesting exceptions: two monographs written by two noteworthy philosophers, the first being Nicholas Rescher, who published in 1987 Ethical Idealism. An Inquiry into the Nature and Function of Ideals, and the second being Dorothy Emmet, who published in 1994 The Role of the Unrealisable. A Study in Regulative Ideals. In this article I shall take into account their positions arguing that both Rescher and Emmet work on a very important topic, as they highlight the essential role the notion of ideal played, and still plays, in human life, yet, the role of the notion of ideal they highlight may be notably increased by more precisely understanding its own genesis and history.

Abstract

What I intend to do in the following pages is to focus on what might be termed the most important turn in the very dimension of ideality throughout the history of Western culture: the introduction of the notion of ideal drawn from Plato’s notion of idea, and especially its singular contemporary destiny. In the first part of the article, I am going to analyze Kant’s introduction of the notion of ideal and Hegel’s reading of it, and I am going to argue that the former affirms a dualistic relationship which the latter negates. In the second part of the article, I am going to reason on the actual effects of both the affirmation and the negation of the dualism between the ideal and the real, especially focusing on the forms of totalitarianism and anarchism which characterized the twentieth-century history of Western culture. This will lead me to argue that we should try to avoid both the bad uses of the ideal (namely, the idealization of the real and the debasement of the real through the ideal) and the death of the ideal (namely, forms of epistemological and ethical anarchism) in order to work on a notion of ideal which could be an exceedingly promising tool for us to change and improve the real. This change and improvement can be achieved through the affirmation of the dualistic relationship between the ideal and the real, and more specifically through what I will call an evolutionary notion of ideal versus a revolutionary notion of ideal.

Abstract

The article tries to answer the following question: what is the most promising epistemological strategy if my objective is the construction of a theory which gives me the opportunity to decrease the risk of getting to what is actually absolute, that is, to irreversible negative actions (irreversible as a theory might not be, but as an action often is)? The answer proposed is a form of epistemological dualism which means that I metaphysically believe (that is, I programmatically and systematically believe, without certainly knowing it) that the epistemological relationship between any theory and any reality is dualistic. More specifically, I metaphysically believe that the epistemological relationship between any theory and any reality is not saturated: in any theory there is an ideal error, because there is no theory which is totally saturated by reality, and any reality can actualize the ideal error, because there is no reality which is totally saturated by theory.
