5. Zeolite/Polymer Composites Prepared by Photopolymerization: Effect of Compensation Cations on Opacity and Gas Adsorption Applications.

Abstract

The fabrication of structured zeolite adsorbents through photopolymerization‐based 3D printing which offers a solution to the limitations of conventional shaping techniques has been demonstrated but many parameters still need to be optimized. In this study, we studied the influence of zeolite compensation cations on the photopolymerization and the composite's properties. Modified zeolites (LTA 4 A and FAU 13X exchanged with K+, Li+, Sr2+, Ca2+ or Mg2+) were incorporated in PEGDA with BDMK as photoinitiator, and the formulation was cured under mild conditions (LED@405 nm, room temperature, under air). Our results indicate that the nature of zeolite compensation cations affects the colorimetric properties of polymer/zeolite composites: a better translucency parameter results in higher depth of cure. After calcination at 650 °C and complete removal of PEGDA, pure zeolitic monoliths were tested for adsorption of gas molecules of interest (carbon dioxide, dichlorobenzene and water). Structured 4 A and 13X monoliths obtained by 3D printing exhibit comparable adsorption capacity to commercial beads prepared from the same zeolites. This study enhances our understanding of the photopolymerization process involved in the production of polymer/zeolite composites. Abstract

The increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has a severe influence on both the environment and human health, resulting in global warming. According to the high adsorption capacity for CO2 removal, zeolites play an important role for CO2 capture and sequestration. However, its powdery form limits their use in adsorption applications. When binding agents are used, the zeolite porosity is partially occluded that compromises the CO2 adsorption capacity severely. How to prepare binder‐free zeolite beads with a certain structure strength and how to keep the high surface area and porosity are a great challenge. In this work, LTA‐5A beads composites (80 wt.%) are prepared via cationic photopolymerization and then calcination is performed to remove organic part to obtain LTA‐5A beads with different sizes (<1.0 mm, 1.0–2.0 mm, and 2.0–3.0 mm). These beads (0.1 g) are characterized by good mechanical strength without any binder (partial bead fragmentation under 200 g‐load) with a preserved zeolite porosity. This method allows to exploit the zeolite beads reaching a high specific surface area (586 688 m2 g−1) and good CO2 adsorption capacity (4.5‐4.9 mmol g−1). These values are higher than those of commercial LTA‐5A beads (515 m2 g−1 and 3.8 mmol g−1, respectively), which is in agreement with their binder‐free structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Nanoscale Features of Zeolite Fillers Enhance the Depth of Cure, Optical Properties, and Mechanical Properties of 3D-Printed Polymer Composite Structures.

Abstract

3D printing provides the possibility for the preparation of structured zeolite nanomaterial monoliths, which can overcome the drawback of limited forms obtained from conventional shaping methods and make more efficient use of this material. Compared to other techniques, photopolymerization presents many advantages such as being environmentally friendly, having low energy consumption, and having excellent spatial and temporal controls. Nevertheless, a photocurable system with fillers still faces challenge for the light penetration issue. In this paper, the effect of different characteristics of LTA zeolite (crystal size and molar Si/Al ratio) are discussed. The results demonstrate that compared to microfillers, nanosized particles lead to better depth of cure (DOC), optical properties, and mechanical properties for the composites. Furthermore, the Si/Al ratio of LTA zeolites under study (1 ≤ Si/Al ≤ 2.8) also has an impact on the DOC, optical property of the composites, and the photopolymerization conversion. 3D printed zeolite-embedded monoliths were tested for water vapor sorption in nanopores (60 °C, relative humidity = 50%). This work enables a better understanding toward the fabrication of zeolite nanomaterials/polymer based composites by photopolymerization. It will expand the potential applications for 3D printing and zeolite shaping for applications in several domains such as decontamination and catalysis and in the biomedical field. Abstract

In recent years, photopolymerization has been found wide applications in industry and daily life, while many defective properties of polymers limit their development, including compressive strength, mechanical properties, and functions. Furthermore, zeolites are microporous solids with many industrial applications. As fillers they can improve mechanical properties of zeolite/polymer composite and transfer their properties to composites. Here the fabrication is reported of composites with very high filler contents (80–95 wt%) under mild photopolymerization conditions (visible LED light irradiation, room temperature, under air). Compared to pure poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) polymer, mechanical properties have been greatly improved, and the storage modulus increased by nearly 20‐fold compared to that of pure polymer. After debinding/sintering of composites by high temperature treatment, zeolite porosity is preserved with good adsorption capacities. Some step‐like object with 3D structure is also obtained by an original 3D printing technique noted "layer by layer molding/curing." Hence, as a great breakthrough, this work is expected to lead to a valuable development in the field of photopolymerization in quite highly filled composites. This also will expand their potential applications for 3D printing in the fields of high‐performance lightweight materials and adsorption, and opens the door to a new process of zeolite shaping.
