Understanding the growth mechanisms of III-nitride nanowires is of great importance to realise their full potential. We present a systematic study of silane-assisted GaN nanowire growth on c-sapphire substrates by investigating the surface evolution of the sapphire substrates during the high temperature annealing, nitridation and nucleation steps, and the growth of GaN nanowires. The nucleation step - which transforms the AlN layer formed during the nitridation step to AlGaN - is critical for subsequent silane-assisted GaN nanowire growth. Both Ga-polar and N-polar GaN nanowires were grown with N-polar nanowires growing much faster than the Ga-polar nanowires. On the top surface of the N-polar GaN nanowires protuberance structures were found, which relates to the presence of Ga-polar domains within the nanowires. Detailed morphology studies revealed ring-like features concentric with the protuberance structures, indicating energetically favourable nucleation sites at inversion domain boundaries. Cathodoluminescence studies showed quenching of emission intensity at the protuberance structures, but the impact is limited to the protuberance structure area only and does not extend to the surrounding areas. Hence it should minimally affect the performance of devices whose functions are based on radial heterostructures, suggesting that radial heterostructures remain a promising device structure.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the most promising materials for next-generation energy storage systems. However, the impact of particle morphology on the energy storage performances of these frameworks is poorly understood. To address this, here we use coordination modulation to synthesise three samples of the conductive MOF Cu

Fluorescent InP-based quantum dots have emerged as valuable nanomaterials for display technologies, biological imaging, and optoelectronic applications. The inclusion of zinc can enhance both their emissive and structural properties and reduce interfacial defects with ZnS or CdS shells. However, the sub-particle distribution of zinc and the role this element plays often remains unclear, and it has previously proved challenging to synthesise Zn-alloyed InP-based nanoparticles using aminophosphine precursors. In this report, we describe the synthesis of alloyed InZnP using zinc carboxylates, achieving colour-tuneable fluorescence from the unshelled core materials, followed by a one-pot ZnS or CdS deposition using diethyldithiocarbamate precursors. Structural analysis revealed that the "core/shell" particles synthesised here were more accurately described as homogeneous extended alloys with the constituent shell elements diffusing through the entire core, including full-depth inclusion of zinc.

Integrating diamond with GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) improves thermal management, ultimately increasing the reliability and performance of high-power high-frequency radio frequency amplifiers. Conventionally, an amorphous interlayer is used before growing polycrystalline diamond onto GaN in these devices. This layer contributes significantly to the effective thermal boundary resistance (TBReff) between the GaN HEMT and the diamond, reducing the benefit of the diamond heat spreader. Replacing the amorphous interlayer with a higher thermal conductivity crystalline material would reduce TBReff and help to enable the full potential of GaN-on-diamond devices. In this work, a crystalline Al0.32Ga0.68N interlayer has been integrated into a GaN/AlGaN HEMT device epitaxy. Two samples were studied, one with diamond grown directly on the AlGaN interlayer and another incorporating a thin crystalline SiC layer between AlGaN and diamond. The TBReff, measured using transient thermoreflectance, was improved for the sample with SiC (30 ± 5 m2 K GW-1) compared to the sample without (107 ± 44 m2 K GW-1). The reduced TBReff is thought to arise from improved adhesion between SiC and the diamond compared to the diamond directly on AlGaN because of an increased propensity for carbide bond formation between SiC and the diamond. The stronger carbide bonds aid transmission of phonons across the interface, improving heat transport.

Metal sulfide and metal oxide alloys of the form Mo1-x W x S2 and Mo1-x W x O3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) are synthesized with varying nominal stoichiometries (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0) by thermolysis of the molecular precursors MoL4 and WS(S2)L2 (where L = S2CNEt2) in tandem and in various ratios. Either transition-metal dichalcogenides or transition-metal oxides can be produced from the same pair of precursors by the choice of reaction conditions; metal sulfide alloys of the form Mo1-x W x S2 are produced in an argon atmosphere, while the corresponding metal oxide alloys Mo1-x W x O3 are produced in air, both under atmospheric pressure at 450 °C and for only 1 h. Changes in Raman spectra and in powder X-ray diffraction patterns are observed across the series of alloys, which confirm that alloying is successful in the bulk materials. For the oxide materials, we show that the relatively complicated diffraction patterns are a result of differences in the tilt angle of MO6 octahedra within three closely related unit cell types. Alloying of Mo and W in the products is characterized at the microscale and nanoscale by scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning transmission electron microscopy-EDX spectroscopy, respectively.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the most promising materials for next-generation energy storage systems, including supercapacitors. Few studies, however, have examined the impact of particle morphology and degree of agglomeration on the energy storage performances of these materials. To address this, here we use coordination modulation to synthesise three samples of the conductive MOF Cu3(HHTP)2 (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) with distinct microstructures. Evaluation of the performances of these samples in symmetric supercapacitors with organic and ionic liquid electrolytes demonstrated that samples with weakly agglomerated ‘flake-like’ particles, with short pores and many pore openings, display superior capacitive performances than samples with either weakly agglomerated ‘rod-like’ particle morphologies or strongly agglomerated ‘flake-like’ particles. The results of this study provide a target microstructure for conductive MOFs for energy storage applications.

Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques are used to study the bonding configuration between gallium cations and nitrogen anions at defects in metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy-grown cubic zincblende GaN on vicinal (001) 3C-SiC/Si. By combining high-angle annular dark-field and annular bright-field imaging, the orientation and bond polarity of planar defects, such as stacking faults and wurtzite inclusions, were identified. It is found that the substrate miscut direction toward one of the 3C-SiC [Formula: see text] in-plane directions is correlated with the crystallographic [1–10] in-plane direction and that the {111} planes with a zone axis parallel to the miscut have a Ga-polar character, whereas the {111} planes in the zone perpendicular to the miscut direction have N-polarity. The polarity of {111}-type stacking faults is maintained in the former case by rotating the coordination of Ga atoms by 180° around the [Formula: see text] polar axes and in the latter case by a similar rotation of the coordination of the N atoms. The presence of small amounts of the hexagonal wurtzite phase on Ga-polar {111} planes and their total absence on N-polar {111} planes is tentatively explained by the preferential growth of wurtzite GaN in the [0001] Ga-polar direction under non-optimized growth conditions.

GaN-on-Si has become a useful fabrication route for many GaN devices and applications, but the mechanical stress incorporated throughout the material stack can impact the viability of this approach. The transfer printing of GaN membrane devices, a promising emerging technology, is most effective with flat membranes, but in practice many GaN structures released from their Si substrate are highly bowed due to the strain in the epitaxial nitride stack. Our approach uses the optical profiles of epitaxial wafers and membranes as inputs for inferring the mechanical strain state of the material by multi-variable numerical model fitting using COMSOL Multiphysics. This versatile, adaptable and scalable method was tested on samples from two GaN-on-Si wafers, revealing the relationship between built-in strain and material bow in principal-component fashion, returning 3–4×10−4 strain estimates for the AlGaN (compressive) and GaN (tensile) layers, and suggesting the occurrence of plastic deformation during transfer printing.

The performance of transistors designed specifically for high-frequency applications is critically reliant upon the semi-insulating electrical properties of the substrate. The suspected formation of a conductive path for radio frequency (RF) signals in the highly resistive (HR) silicon substrate itself has been long held responsible for the suboptimal efficiency of as-grown GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) at higher operating frequencies. Here, we reveal that not one but two discrete channels distinguishable by their carrier type, spatial extent, and origin within the metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) growth process participate in such parasitic substrate conduction. An n-type layer that forms first is uniformly distributed in the substrate, and it has a purely thermal origin. Alongside this, a p-type layer is localized on the substrate side of the AlN/Si interface and is induced by diffusion of group-III element of the metal-organic precursor. Fortunately, maintaining the sheet resistance of this p-type layer to high values (∼2000 Ω/□) seems feasible with particular durations of either organometallic precursor or ammonia gas predose of the Si surface, i.e., the intentional introduction of one chemical precursor just before nucleation. It is proposed that the mechanism behind the control actually relies on the formation of disordered AlSiN between the crystalline AlN nucleation layer and the crystalline silicon substrate.

When ceria is used as a support for many redox catalysis involved in green catalysis, it is well-known that the overlying noble metal can gain access to a significant quantity of oxygen atoms with high mobility and fast reduction and oxidation properties under mild conditions. However, it is as yet unclear what the underlying principle and the nature of the ceria surface involved are. By using two tailored morphologies of ceria nanocrystals, namely cubes and rods, it is demonstrated from Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy with Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) mapping and Pulse Isotopic Exchange (PIE) that ceria nanocubes terminated with a polar surface (100) can give access to more than the top most layer of surface oxygen atoms. Also, they give higher oxygen mobility than ceria nanorods with a non-polar facet of (110). A new insight for the possible additional role of polar ceria surface plays in the oxygen mobility is obtained from Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations which suggest that the (100) surface sites that has more than half-filled O on same plane can drive oxygen atoms to oxidise adsorbate(s) on Pd due to the strong electrostatic repulsion.

In this study, we utilized low cost and easily available bubble wrap, homemade indicator solution (cabbage juice), and custom built mobile app based on color detection to find pH values of common liquid samples. We studied two common color definition models i.e. the Red, Green, Blue (RGB) and Hue, Saturation, and Light (HSL) to extract pH values of eight different liquids upon color change after reaction with cabbage juice. Our results show that the HSL based color definition model performs better than the RGB model for both calibration liquids (vinegar with pH=3 and bicarbonate soda pH=9) and eight target liquids with the pH range spanning from 2 to 13.

The synthesis of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) from single-source precursors offers simplified manufacturing processes at the cost of reduced atom efficiency. Self-capping routes have the potential to maximise this efficiency although investigation has so far been limited to organic solvents. Here we present the synthesis of copper sulfide NCs via the decomposition of a copper dithiocarbamate complex in water. Nanocrystalline covellite particles were prepared without the need for additional capping ligand and exhibited a hollow nanosphere morphology. Mass spectrometry of the water-stable NCs indicated the presence of a number of surface ligands, including a small amine fragment of the single-source precursor (SSP) complex. A broad plasmon resonance in the near-infrared (NIR) at 990 nm was also observed and the photothermal effect of this demonstrated. Cytotoxicity experiments indicated cell viability remained above 95% for NC concentrations up to 1 mg mL−1, indicating high biocompatibility.

Accurately determining the morphology and hence the true surface areas of catalytic nanoparticles remains challenging. For many chemically synthesised nanoparticle suspensions conventional BET surface area measurements are often not feasible due to the large quantities of material required. For platinum, a paradigmatic catalyst, this issue is further complicated by the propensity of this metal to form porous aggregate structures comprised of smaller (ca. 2-5 nm) crystallites as opposed to continuous solid structures. This dendritic/porous particulate morphology leads to a large but poorly defined 'active' surface which is difficult to measure accurately. Here we compare, single nanoparticle electrochemistry with three dimensional (3D) electron tomography and quantitative 2D high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analysis to yield insights into the porosity and chemically accessible surface area of a 30 nm diameter commercial Pt nanoparticle catalyst. Good quantitative agreement is found between 2D and 3D STEM-based measurements of the particle morphology, density and size distribution. Both 3D STEM tomography and single nanoparticle electrochemical measurements allow quantification of the surface area but the electrocatalytic surface area is found to be 2.8× larger than is measured in STEM; indicating the importance of the atomic scale roughness and structure (

Self-assembling conjugated polymer nanoparticles containing PVKand PLGA-PEG as a matrix polymer were doped with both a luminescentrare-earth complex and magnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs),giving rise to materials that are both luminescent and magnetic.Nanoparticle sizes ranged from 80–110 nm without SPIONs andshowed an increase in size (200–1000 nm) with additional SPIONcontent (11–54%). Quantum yields (QYs) of 24% and 18% weremeasured for systems without and with 11% SPIONs, respectively.Optical properties were stable and suitable for biological imagingapplications.

Zincblende GaN has the potential to bridge the “green gap” due to the absence of internal electric fields with respect to wurtzite GaN. However, at present, the quality of zincblende GaN light emitting diodes (LEDs) is not yet sufficient for useful efficient green devices. One of the major challenges is the poor spectral purity of the emitted light. A multimicroscopy approach, combining scanning electron microscopy-cathodoluminescence (SEM-CL), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and scanning electron diffraction (SED), is applied on a single feature to enable cross correlation between techniques and to investigate the possible causes for the broad optical emission of a zincblende GaN LED structure. This investigation demonstrates that SEM-CL on a site-specific TEM cross section prepared by focused ion beam (FIB) microscope can provide access to nanoscale light emission variations that can be directly related to structural differences seen in STEM. We demonstrate that the general large quantum well (QW) emission peak width relates to quantum well thickness and In content fluctuations. Multiple low-energy QW emission peaks are found to be linked with stacking fault bunches that intersect the QWs. Splitting of the QW emission peak is also found to be caused by the formation of wurtzite-phase inclusions associated with twins formed within the zincblende matrix. Our characterization also illustrates the quantum well structure within such wurtzite inclusions and their impact on the optical emission.

There is a critical research need for efficient luminescent colloidal nanocrystals, free from cadmium and lead whose toxicity subjects them to usage restrictions, with applications from display devices to biology. Approaches to directly replace cadmium-based materials have mainly focused on indium phosphide-based nanocrystals, however these too are subject to concerns over toxicity. Few other alternatives have been found that can compete with the emission range and efficiency of Cd and Pb-based nanocrystals. Group III-nitride nanocrystals, and their alloys, offer the exciting potential to tune bandgap energies from the ultraviolet to the near infrared yet a robust route towards efficient luminescent nitride nanocrystals is lacking. Here, the synthesis of photoluminescent indium zinc nitride quantum dots exhibiting tunable emission through the visible to near infrared spectra region, with quantum yields of up to 30% is reported. Capping the nanocrystals with both a GaN and ZnS shell significantly increased air stability and emission quantum yields. A proof-of-principle indium zinc nitride nanocrystal light emitting diode is also demonstrated. This work overcomes the significant challenges that have prevented the full exploration of nitride-based semiconductor nanocrystal development, providing a new system for further exploration as a heavy-metal free alternative to current state-of-the-art materials.

Zinc nitride (Zn3N2) colloidal quantum dots are composed of non-toxic, low-cost and earth-abundant elements. The effects of quantum confinement on the optical properties and charge dynamics of these dots are studied using steady state optical characterization and ultrafast fluence-dependent transient ab-sorption. The absorption and emission energies are observed to be size tunable, with the optical band gap increasing from 1.5 eV to 3.2 eV as the dot diameter decreased from 8.9 nm to 2.7 nm. Size dependent absorption cross sections (σ = 1.22 ± 0.02 × 10-15 cm2 to 2.04 ± 0.03 × 10-15 cm2), single exciton lifetimes (0.36 ± 0.02 ns to 0.65 ± 0.03 ns), as well as Auger recombination lifetimes of biexcitons (3.2 ± 0.4 ps to 5.0 ± 0.1 ps) and trions (20.8 ± 1.8 ps to 46.3 ± 1.3 ps) are also measured. The degeneracy of the con-duction band minimum (푔 = 2) is determined from the analysis of the transient absorption spectra at different excitation fluences. The performance of Zn3N2 colloidal quantum dots thus broadly matches that of established visible light emitting quantum dots based on toxic or rare elements, making them a viable alternative for QD-LED displays.

Ceria has been widely used as support in electrocatalysis for its high degree of oxygen storage, fast oxygen mobility, and reduction and oxidation properties at mild conditions. However, it is unclear what are the underlying principles and the nature of surface involved. By controlling the growth of various morphologies of ceria nanoparticles, it is demonstrated that the cubic-form of ceria, predominantly covered with higher energy polar surface (100), as support for Pd gives much higher activity in the electrocatalytic oxidation of formic acid than ceria of other morphologies (rods and spheres) with low-indexed facets ((110) and (111)). High-resolution transmission electron spectroscopy confirms the alternating layer-to-layer of cations and anions in (100) surface, and the electrostatic repulsion of oxygen anions within the same layers gives intrinsically higher oxygen vacancies on this redox active surface in order to reduce surface polarity. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the properties of fast oxygen mobility to reoxidize the CO-poisoned Pd may arise from the overdosed oxygens on these ceria surface layers during electro-oxidation hence sustaining higher activity.

Current cubic zincblende III-Nitride epilayers grown on 3C-SiC/Si(001) substrates by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy contain a high density of stacking faults lying on the {111} planes. A combination of high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry is used to investigate the effects of alloy segregation around stacking faults in a zincblende III-nitride light-emitting structure, incorporating InGaN quantum wells and an AlGaN electron blocking layer. It is found that in the vicinity of the stacking faults, the indium and aluminum contents were a factor of 2.3 ± 1.3 and 1.9 ± 0.5 higher, respectively, than that in the surrounding material. Indium and aluminum are also observed to segregate differently in relation to stacking faults with indium segregating adjacent to the stacking fault while aluminum segregates directly on the stacking fault.

Zincblende InGaN/GaN quantum wells offer a potential improvement to the efficiency of green light emission by removing the strong electric fields present in similar structures. However, a high density of stacking faults may have an impact on the recombination in these systems. In this work, scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray measurements demonstrate that one-dimensional nanostructures form due to indium segregation adjacent to stacking faults. In photoluminescence experiments, these structures emit visible light, which is optically polarized up to 86% at 10 K and up to 75% at room temperature. The emission redshifts and broadens as the well width increases from 2 nm to 8 nm. Photoluminescence excitation measurements indicate that carriers are captured by these structures from the rest of the quantum wells and recombine to emit light polarized along the length of these nanostructures.

Hot carrier generation by light in various semiconductors and metallic nanostructures is important for many photocatalytic and photochemical processes, including water and hydrogen splitting. Here, we report on investigations of hot electron generation and extraction from Pt decorated SiO2-Au nanoparticles using the degradation of methylene blue dye as a test-bed. Enhanced catalytic activity was found with an increase of Pt loading on the surface of the heterostructures. The small size of the Au nanoparticles (∼12 nm) decorating the silica nanoparticles reduces hot electron collisions and related thermalization processes, since charge carriers have short paths to the surface where reactions take place and where Pt is situated. The heterostructures exhibit a broad plasmonic resonance in the visible wavelength range from 500 to 700 nm and hot carrier generation predominately takes place under resonant excitation. Electron-microscopy characterization and numerical modelling have allowed the optimization of Pt coverage for hot-electron transfer, consisting of a thin Pt shell covering the Au nanoparticle with Pt nanoparticles additionally placed on top. This geometry provides an increased number of active sites for methylene blue degradation and promotes separation of charge carriers generated by plasmonic excitations in Au. Such SiO2-Au-Pt nanoparticles are attractive for hot-electron production due to the tunability of their plasmonic resonance and enhanced catalytic activity.

Functionalization of graphene is fundamental to facilitating its processing and offers a wide scope for advanced applications. Here we demonstrate a facile, highly efficient and mild covalent functionalization of graphene using HNO3 vapour. This results in functionalized few-layer graphene (FLG) that is high in both quantity and quality. We fully characterized the structure and defect level of functionalized FLG by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The results from this analysis show the tunability of the surface oxygen functionalities of FLG achieved through controlling the oxidation temperature without affecting the major intrinsic properties of graphene. This allows for further doping for applications, for example with nitrogen as a metal-free catalyst in the oxygen reduction reaction.

Three distinctive doping effects to modify the electronic and geometric properties of Pd nanocrystals for HCOOH decomposition to H2/CO2 are presented: Bi atoms take preferable residence on higher index sites, which leads to a reduction in HCOOH dehydration; Te atoms dwell favourably on terrace sites, which reduces the rate of dehydrogenation; Ag atoms, without site specificity, induce strong electronic effects to promote the activity on the dwindling number of surface Pd sites at high coverage.

Achieving control of the surface chemistry of colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) is essential to fully exploit their properties in solar cells, but direct measurement of the chemistry and electronic structure in the outermost atomic layers is challenging. Here we probe the surface oxidation and passivation of cation-exchanged PbS/CdS core/shell CQDs with sub nm-scale precision using synchrotron-radiation-excited depth-profiling photoemission. We investigate the surface composition of the topmost 1-2.5 nm of the CQDs as a function of depth, for CQDs of varying CdS shell thickness, and examine how the surface changes after prolonged air exposure. We demonstrate that the Cd is localized at the surface of the CQDs. The surface-localized products of oxidation are identified, and the extent of oxidation quantified. We show that oxidised sulfur species are progressively eliminated as Cd replaces Pb at the surface. A sub-monolayer surface 'decoration' of Cd is found to be effective in passivating the CQDs. We show that the measured energy-level alignments at PbS/CdS colloidal quantum dot surfaces differ from those expected on the basis of bulk band offsets, and are strongly affected by the oxidation products. We develop a model for the passivating action of Cd. The optimum shell thickness (of around 0.1 nm, previously found to give maximised power conversion efficiency in PbS/CdS solar cells) is found to correspond to a trade-off between the rate of oxidation and the introduction of a surface barrier to charge transport.

A series of highly efficient semiconductor nanocrystal (NC) photocatalysts have been synthesized by growing wurtzite-ZnO tetrahedrons around pre-formed CdS, CdSe, and CdTe quantum dots (QDs). The resulting contact between two small but high-quality crystals creates novel CdX/ZnO heterostructured semiconductor nanocrystals (HSNCs) with extensive type-II nanojunctions that exhibit more efficient photocatalytic decomposition of aqueous organic molecules under UV irradiation. Catalytic testing and characterization indicate that catalytic activity increases as a result of a combination of both the intrinsic chemistry of the chalcogenide anions and the heterojunction structure. Atomic probe tomography (APT) is employed for the first time to probe the spatial characteristics of the nanojunction between cadmium chalcogenide and ZnO crystalline phases, which reveals various degrees of ion exchange between the two crystals to relax large lattice mismatches. In the most extreme case, total encapsulation of CdTe by ZnO as a result of interfacial alloying is observed, with the expected advantage of facilitating hole transport for enhanced exciton separation during catalysis.

International audience; Incorporation of CdS quantum dots is shown to significantly promote photocatalytic hydrogen production from water over singlelayer MoS2 in a remote manner via their dispersions on a carbon nanotube as a nanocomposite: the hydrogen evolution rate is found to be critically dependent on the content and structural integrity of the carbon nanotube such that the double-walled carbon nanotube shows superior H2 production to a single-walled carbon nanotube because the inner carbon tubules survive fromthe structural damage during functionalization.

Incorporation of CdS quantum dots is shown to significantly promote photocatalytic hydrogen production from water over single-layer MoS

We report single molecular sheets of niobate prepared by a simple bottom-up approach using hydrothermal synthesis of niobium ethoxide with the aid of triethanolamine as a structural modifier: the high kinetic stability of these molecular entities against self-assembly allows them to mix well with other colloids and facilitates their extensive electronic interactions and thus photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity from water is much enhanced over composite of single niobate sheets with graphene and MoS2 due to efficient electron transfer and charge separation.

Cation-exchange has been used to synthesize PbS/CdS core/shell colloidal quantum dots from PbS starting cores. These were then incorporated as the active material in solar cell test devices using a solution-based, air-ambient, layer-by-layer spin coating process. We show that core/shell colloidal quantum dots can replace their unshelled counterparts with a similar band gap as the active layer in a solar cell device, leading to an improvement in open circuit voltage from 0.42 to 0.66 V. This improvement is attributed to a reduction in recombination as a result of the passivating shell. However, this increase comes at the expense of short circuit current by creating a barrier for transport. To overcome this, we first optimize the shell thickness by varying the conditions for cation-exchange to form the thinnest shell layer possible that provides sufficient surface passivation. Next, ligand exchange with a combination of halide and bifunctional organic molecules is used in conjunction with the core/shell strategy. Power conversion efficiencies of 5.6 ± 0.4% have been achieved with a simple heterojunction device architecture.

The lasing behavior of solution-based colloidal quantum dots within an open microcavity is reported. The small size and wide tunability of the cavity provide single mode lasing over a wavelength range in excess of 25 nm. By extracting the lasing threshold and differential gain for the fundamental cavity mode over this spectral range, gain spectroscopy of the quantum dot solution is demonstrated. This new approach could help in the optimization of laser gain media and provides a way of constructing miniature laser arrays for on-chip integration.

In clinical diagnostics, homogeneous time-resolved (TR) FRET immunoassays are used for fast and highly sensitive detection of biomarkers in serum samples. The most common immunoassay format is based on europium chelate or cryptate donors and allophycocyanin acceptors. Replacing europium donors with terbium complexes and the acceptors with QDs offers large photophysical advantages for multiplexed diagnostics, because the Tb-complex can be used as FRET donor for QD acceptors of different colors. Water-soluble and biocompatible QDs are commercially available or can be synthesized in the laboratory using many available recipes from the literature. Apart from the semiconductor material composition, an important aspect of choosing the right QD for TR-FRET assays is the thickness of the QD coating, which will influence the photophysical properties and long-term stability as well as the donor-acceptor distance and FRET efficiency. Here we present a detailed time-resolved spectroscopic study of three different QDs with an emission maximum around 605 nm for their application as FRET acceptors (using a common Tb donor) in TR-bioassays: (i) Invitrogen/Life Technologies Qdot605, (ii) eBioscience eFluorNC605 and iii) ter-polymer stabilized CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs synthesized in our laboratories. All FRET systems are very stable and possess large Förster distances (7.4-9.1 nm), high FRET efficiencies (0.63-0.80) and low detection limits (0.06-2.0 pM) within the FRET-bioassays. Shapes, sizes and the biotin/QD ratio of the biocompatible QDs could be determined directly in the solution phase bioassays at subnanomolar concentrations. Both commercial amphiphilic polymer/lipid encapsulated QDs and self-made ligand-exchanged QDs provide extremely low detection limits for highly sensitive TR-FRET bioassays.

We investigate the growth and the physical and optical properties of type-II heterostructured ZnTe/ZnSe colloidal nanocrystals, focusing on the role of the 7% lattice mismatch between the two materials in determining growth homogeneity and band structure. We find that the lattice mismatch between the two materials places limitations on the range of structures that can be grown, and for those in which coherent growth is achieved we present clear evidence that the low bulk modulus ZnTe cores are compressed by the higher modulus ZnSe shells, accentuating the red-shift of the excitonic state with increasing shell thickness. By employing a variety of characterization tools we build a clear picture of the core-shell architecture. We show how strain is manifested in structures with sharp core-shell interfaces and how intentional alloying of the interface can influence the growth and exciton energies. We show that a (2,6)-band effective mass model is able to distinguish between the as-grown "sharp" and "alloyed" interfaces, indicating that the alloyed structures incorporate reduced strain. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

The phase transfer of quantum dots to water is an important aspect of preparing nanomaterials that are suitable for biological applications, and although numerous reports describe ligand exchange, very few describe efficient ligand encapsulation techniques. In this report, we not only report a new method of phase transferring quantum dots (QDs) using an amphiphilic protein (hydrophobin) but also describe the advantages of using a biological molecule with available functional groups and their use in imaging cancer cells in vivo and other imaging applications.

The lasing threshold of the fundamental cavity mode is measured as a function of wavelength and single mode lasing is demonstrated for colloidal CdSe/CdS quantum dots and nanoplaletes using tunable open microcavities.

All rights reserved.We describe a new experimental pump-probe methodology where a 2D delay-line detector enables fast (ns) monitoring of a narrow XPS spectrum in combination with a continuous pump laser. This has been developed at the TEMPO beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL to enable the study of systems with intrinsically slow electron dynamics, and to complement faster measurements that use a fs laser as the pump. We demonstrate its use in a time-resolved study of the surface photovoltage of the m-plane ZnO (101¯0) surface which shows persistent photoconductivity, requiring monitoring periods on ms timescales and longer. We make measurements from this surface in the presence and absence of chemically-linked quantum dots (QDs), using type I PbS and type II CdSe/ZnSe (core/shell) QDs as examples. We monitor signals from both the ZnO substrate and the bound QDs during photoexcitation, yielding evidence for charge injection from the QDs into the ZnO. The chemical specificity of the technique allows us to observe differences in the extent to which the QD systems are influenced by the field of the surface depletion layer at the ZnO surface, which we attribute to differences in the band structure at the interface.

The charge dynamics at the surface of the transparent conducting oxide and photoanode material ZnO are investigated in the presence and absence of light-harvesting colloidal quantum dots (QDs). The time-resolved change in surface potential upon photoexcitation has been measured in the m-plane ZnO (101[combining macron]0) using a laser pump-synchrotron X-ray probe methodology. By varying the oxygen annealing conditions, and hence the oxygen vacancy concentration of the sample, we find that dark carrier lifetimes at the ZnO surface vary from hundreds of μs to ms timescales, i.e. a persistent photoconductivity (PPC) is observed. The highly-controlled nature of our experiments under ultra-high vacuum (UHV), and the use of band-gap and sub-band-gap photoexcitation, allow us to demonstrate that defect states ca. 340 meV above the valence band edge are directly associated with the PPC, and that the PPC mediated by these defects dominates over the oxygen photodesorption mechanism. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that ionized oxygen vacancy states are responsible for the PPC in ZnO. The effect of chemically linking two colloidal QD systems (type I PbS and type II CdS-ZnSe) to the surface has also been investigated. Upon deposition of the QDs onto the surface, the dark carrier lifetime and the surface photovoltage are reduced, suggesting a direct injection of charge carriers into the ZnO conduction band. The results are discussed in the context of the development of next-generation solar cells.

In this Letter we demonstrate that hydrogen-terminated porous silicon (PSi) layers and powders can serve as highly efficient reductive templates for noble metal salts. The reduction results in metal nanoparticle (NP) formation in the pores of PSi. Gold NP formation has been monitored in-situ by measuring the plasmon resonance response. Pt NPs, formed in the PSi matrix, were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Furthermore, hybrid Pt/PSi nanocomposites exhibit a high catalytic activity for CO oxidation.

The application of indium-free quaternary chalcogenides, such as Cu(2)ZnSnS(4) (CZTS), in photovoltaics has created tremendous interest in recent years. In this paper we develop a method to synthesize high quality CZTS nanoparticles with thermodynamically stable kesterite and wurtzite phases via a simple, one-pot, low-cost solution method.

Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy is used to investigate the exciton dynamics of Type II ZnTe-ZnSe core-shell colloidal quantum dots. Surface-trapping is shown to occur within a few picosecond for hot electrons and with a few 10s of picoseconds for electrons cooled to the band-edge, and is the dominant process in the decay of the band-edge bleach for well-stirred samples pumped at moderate powers. The surface-trapped electrons produce a broad photo-induced absorption that spectrally overlaps with the band-edge, distorting and partially cancelling out the bleach feature. At high pump powers and for unstirred samples, these surface-trapped electrons can survive sufficiently long within the pumped volume to accumulate under repeated excitation of the sample, resulting in the formation of an additional exciton decay channel.

Biomimetic sulfur-deficient indium sulfide (In2.77S4) was synthesized by a template-assisted hydrothermal method using leaves of Mimosa pudica as a template for the first time. The effect of this template in modifying the morphology of the semiconductor particles was determined by physicochemical characterization, revealing an increase in surface area, decrease in microsphere size and pore size and an increase in pore volume density in samples synthesized with the template. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed the presence of organic sulfur (S O/S C/S H) and sulfur oxide species ( SO2, SO32−, SO42−) at the surface of the indium sulfide in samples synthesized with the template. Biomimetic indium sulfide also showed significant amounts of Fe introduced as a contaminant present on the Mimosa pudica leaves. The presence of these sulfur and iron species favors the photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production by their acting as a sacrificial reagent and promoting water oxidation on the surface of the templated particles, respectively. The photocatalytic hydrogen production rates over optimally-prepared biomimetic indium sulfide and indium sulfide synthesized without the organic template were 73 and 22 μmol g−1, respectively, indicating an improvement by a factor of three in the templated sample.

The rich elemental composition, surface chemistry, and outstanding electrical conductivity of MXenes make them a promising class of two-dimensional (2D) materials for electrochemical energy storage. To translate these properties into high performance devices, it is essential to develop fabrication strategies that allow MXenes to be assembled into electrodes with tunable architectures and investigate the effect of their pore structure on the capacitive performance. Here, we report on the fabrication of MXene aerogels with highly ordered lamellar structures by unidirectional freeze-casting of additive-free Ti3C2Tx aqueous suspensions. These structures can be subsequently processed into practical supercapacitor electrode films by pressing or calendering steps. This versatile processing route allows a wide control of film thickness, spacing within lamellae (to give electrolyte accessible sites), and densities (over 2 orders of magnitude) and hence gives control over the final properties. The as-prepared MXene aerogel with a density of 13 mg cm(-3) achieves 380 F g(-1) capacitance at 2 mV s(-1) and 75 F g(-1) at 50 mV The calendering of the MXene aerogel into a porous 60 pm thick film with a density of 434 mg cm(-3) leads to a superior rate capability of 309 F g(-1) at 50 mV s(-1). In addition, the rolled electrodes present an improvement in volumetric capacitance of 104 times as compared to the as-prepared MXene aerogel. Finally, the outstanding cyclability of rolled electrodes strengthens their nomination for supercapacitor applications. In this paper we demonstrate the possibilities in tuning the porosity and the electrochemical properties of aerogels highlighting the importance of evaluating new and hybrid processing methods to develop energy storage applications. The simplicity and versatility of the developed fabrication strategy open opportunities for the utilization of MXene lamellae architectures in a wide range of applications requiring controlled porosity including catalysis, filtration, and water purification.
