The FAIR principles have become essential in establishing transparent and trustworthy research practices. However the FAIR principles are guidelines indicating the features expected for data to be FAIR, and do not stipulate evaluation criteria. Consequently,there has been a proliferation of approaches to FAIR evaluation to substantiate claims for FAIR-ness, establish baselines, and measure improvement. Some approaches are focussed on FAIR-ness of individual datasets, others of repositories; some require extensive human evaluation, others use automation. However, within some scientific domains, data generation and management follow well-defined processes that result in datasets annotated with metadata and archived in repositories. Existing FAIR evaluation methods consider in less detail the contribution of the processes used in collecting and analysing data and how these enable FAIR-ness. We describe the evaluation approach adopted for FAIR self-evaluation for Photon and Neutron Research Infrastructures (PaN RI’s). We review selected examples of existing FAIR evaluation frameworks designed to enable assessment at different levels, and outline four dimensions that characterise them. As no existing framework met our specific need to focus on FAIR workflows and processes inPaN RIs, it was necessary to select, combine, and adapt existing frameworks, and we developed an approach drawing heavily on the original FAIR principles, the RDA FAIR Data Maturity Model, and FAIRsFAIR’s CoreTrustSeal+FAIRenabling framework. Post-evaluation feedback from ExPaNDS partners indicated that they found the FAIR self-evaluation a useful and valuable exercise forunderstanding current levels of FAIR-ness at their facilities and for articulating what implementations they have in progress or planned to support FAIR in future.

Abstract Electric vehicles (EVs) require an onboard battery charger unit and a battery management system (BMS) unit that balances the voltage levels for each battery cell. So far, both units are two completely autarkic power electronics systems. The circuit presented here operates as a battery charger when the EV is connected to the grid and as a voltage balancer when the EV is driving. Thus, the proposed circuit utilises two functions in one and therefore eliminates the need of having two autarkic units reducing complexity and reduction in component count. The proposed circuit operates as a flyback converter and achieves power factor correction during battery charging. The constant‐current constant‐voltage (CC–CV) charging method is employed to charge the batteries. However, to limit the number of sensors that will be employed as a result of varying cells during charging, the battery current is estimated using a single current transducer and embedding a converter model in the controller. The operation of the circuit is presented in detail and is supported by simulation results. A laboratory prototype is built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed topology. Experiment results show that the proposed method provides an integrated solution of on‐board charging and voltage equalisation.

Instability arthropathy of the sternoclavicular joint is most commonly managed by rehabilitation, injection, and either arthroscopic or open debridement with or without interposition arthroplasty. When these options fail to achieve symptom relief, excision arthroplasty is an option. This is associated with a risk of persistent instability and incomplete pain relief. We describe two cases in which custom sternoclavicular joint replacement was performed for painful insufficiency of scapular suspension. Although the prostheses remained secure in both cases, the first case was complicated by persistent instability due to insufficient reconstruction of the intrinsic sternoclavicular capsular ligaments. This was recognised and corrected for in the second case, in which stability of the sternoclavicular joint replacement has been noted on more than a 5-year review. We conclude that sternoclavicular joint replacement is an option for patients in whom instability arthropathy remains an intrusive problem in daily life after other conventional treatments have not controlled symptoms. Stability of the joint remains a concern. We offer one method of achieving stability through an iterative design process including the ability to reconstruct the intrinsic capsular ligaments around the articulation.

Abstract Background Proximal humerus fracture (PHF) complications, whether following surgery or nonoperative management, require standardization of definitions and documentation for consistent reporting. We aimed to define an international consensus core event set (CES) of clinically-relevant unfavorable events of PHF to be documented in clinical routine practice and research. Methods A Delphi exercise was implemented with an international panel of experienced shoulder trauma surgeons selected by survey invitation of AO Trauma members. An organized list of PHF events after nonoperative or operative management was developed and reviewed by panel members using on-line surveys. The proposed core set was revised regarding event groups along with definitions, specifications and timing of occurrence. Consensus was reached with at least a two-third agreement. Results The PHF consensus panel was composed of 231 clinicians worldwide who responded to at least one of two completed surveys. There was 93% final agreement about three intraoperative local event groups (device, osteochondral, soft tissue). Postoperative or nonoperative event terms and definitions organized into eight groups (device, osteochondral, shoulder instability, fracture-related infection, peripheral neurological, vascular, superficial soft tissue, deep soft tissue) were approved with 96 to 98% agreement. The time period for documentation ranged from 30 days to 24 months after PHF treatment depending on the event group and specification. The resulting consensus was presented on a paper-based PHF CES documentation form. Conclusions International consensus was achieved on a core set of local unfavorable events of PHF to foster standardization of complication reporting in clinical research and register documentation. A breakdown in cellular homeostasis is thought to drive naïve T cell aging, however the link between naïve T cell homeostasis and aging in humans is poorly understood. To better address this, we developed a lymphoid organoid system that maintains resting naïve T cells for more than 2 weeks, in conjunction with high CD45RA expression. Deep phenotypic characterization of naïve T cells across age identified reduced CD45RA density as a hallmark of aging. A conversion from CD45RAhigh naive cells to a CD45RAlow phenotype was reproduced within our organoid system by structural breakdown, but not by stromal cell aging or reduced lymphocyte density, and mediated by alternative CD45 splicing. Together, these data suggest that external influences within the lymph node microenvironment may cause phenotypic conversion of naïve T cells in older adults.

BackgroundApproximately 1 in 3 Canadians will experience an addiction or mental health challenge at some point in their lifetime. Unfortunately, there are multiple barriers to accessing mental health care, including system fragmentation, episodic care, long wait times, and insufficient support for health system navigation. In addition, stigma may further reduce an individual’s likelihood of seeking support. Digital technologies present new and exciting opportunities to bridge significant gaps in mental health care service provision, reduce barriers pertaining to stigma, and improve health outcomes for patients and mental health system integration and efficiency. Chatbots (ie, software systems that use artificial intelligence to carry out conversations with people) may be explored to support those in need of information or access to services and present the opportunity to address gaps in traditional, fragmented, or episodic mental health system structures on demand with personalized attention. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated even further the need for mental health support among Canadians and called attention to the inefficiencies of our system. As health care workers and their families are at an even greater risk of mental illness and psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic, this technology will be first piloted with the goal of supporting this vulnerable group. ObjectiveThis pilot study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the Mental Health Intelligent Information Resource Assistant in supporting health care workers and their families in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Nova Scotia with the provision of appropriate information on mental health issues, services, and programs based on personalized needs. MethodsThe effectiveness of the technology will be assessed via voluntary follow-up surveys and an analysis of client interactions and engagement with the chatbot. Client satisfaction with the chatbot will also be assessed. ResultsThis project was initiated on April 1, 2021. Ethics approval was granted on August 12, 2021, by the University of Alberta Health Research Board (PRO00109148) and on April 21, 2022, by the Nova Scotia Health Authority Research Ethics Board (1027474). Data collection is anticipated to take place from May 2, 2022, to May 2, 2023. Publication of preliminary results will be sought in spring or summer 2022, with a more comprehensive evaluation completed by spring 2023 following the collection of a larger data set. ConclusionsOur findings can be incorporated into public policy and planning around mental health system navigation by Canadian mental health care providers—from large public health authorities to small community-based, not-for-profit organizations. This may serve to support the development of an additional touch point, or point of entry, for individuals to access the appropriate services or care when they need them, wherever they are. Background: The anatomy of the clavicle is specific and varied in reference to its topography and shape. These anatomic characteristics play an important role in the open treatment of clavicle fractures. The complex and variable topography creates challenges for implant placement, contouring, and position. Hardware prominence and irritation does influence the decision for secondary surgical intervention. Methods: Computerized tomographic scans of 350 adult clavicles with the corresponding patients' metadata were acquired and digitized. Morphologic parameters determining the shape of the clavicle were defined and computed for each digitized bone. The extracted morphologic parameters were correlated with patient metadata to analyze the relationship between morphologic variability and patient characteristics. Results: The morphologic parameters defining the shape, that is, the radius of the medial and lateral curves, the apparent clavicle height and width, and the clavicle bow position, correlate with the clavicle length. The clavicle length correlates with the patients' height. Gender differences in shape and form were dependent and related to individual height distribution and clavicle length. Asian populations showed a similarly predictable, but shifted, correlation between shape and clavicle length. Conclusion: This anatomic analysis shows that the clavicle shape can be predicted through the clavicle length and patients' stature. Smaller patients have shorter and more curved clavicles, whereas taller patients have longer and less curved clavicles. This correlation will aid surgeons in fracture reduction, implant curvature selection, and in optimal adaptation of clavicle implants, and represents the basis for anatomically accurate solutions for clavicle osteosynthesis.

Objectives: Dislocations and periarticular fractures of the acromioclavicular joint are common injuries of the shoulder girdle. When surgical intervention is indicated, subacromial support is one option to restore the alignment between scapula and the distal/lateral clavicle. Devices used for subacromial support rely on a form of subacromial ‘hook’. The shape, inclination and orientation of which is often mismatched to the anatomy of the inferior surface of the acromion, which may lead to painful acromial osteolysis and rotator cuff abrasion causing impingement. The primary goal of this study was to characterize the geometrical parameters of the acromion and distal clavicle, and their orientation at the acromioclavicular joint. Methods: Computed tomography scans of 120 shoulders were converted into digital three-dimensional models. Measurements of the acromion inclination and acromion width relative to the torsional angle as well as the clavicle depth were taken. A numerical optimization of the anatomical parameters (including torsional and inclination angles, height and width) was performed to find the combination of those parameters with the lowest interpatient variability. Results: The mean clavicle depth was found to be 11.1 mm. The mean acromion width was 27 mm. The combination of torsional and inclination angles with lowest interpatient variability was found at 80° and 16°, respectively. Conclusion: There is a high interpatient variability in the morphology of the inferior surface of the acromion. Subacromial support using a ‘hook’ can be optimized for contact surface area, which should lead to fewer complications after the restoration of acromioclavicular orientation using acromial support strategies.

Background and Objectives: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are common in the elderly, but the treatment results are often poor. A clear understanding of fracture morphology and distribution of cortical bone loss is important for improved surgical decision making, operative considerations, and new implant designs. The aim of this study was to develop a 3D segmentation fracture mapping technique to create a statistical description of the spatial pattern and cortical bone loss of complex PHFs. Materials and Methods: Fifty clinical computed tomography (CT) scans of complex PHFs and their contralateral intact shoulders were collected. In-house software was developed for semi-automated segmentation and fracture line detection and was combined with manual fracture reduction to the contralateral template in a commercial software. A statistical mean model of these cases was built and used to describe probability maps of the fracture lines and cortical fragments. Results: The fracture lines predominantly passed through the surgical neck and between the tuberosities and tendon insertions. The superior aspects of the tuberosities were constant fragments where comminution was less likely. Some fracture lines passed through the bicipital sulcus, but predominantly at its edges and curving around the tuberosities proximally and distally. Conclusions: A comprehensive and systematic approach was developed for processing clinical CT images of complex fractures into fracture morphology and fragment probability maps and applied on PHFs. This information creates an important basis for better understanding of fracture morphology that could be utilized in future studies for surgical training and implant design.

The market dynamics, and their impact on a future circular economy for lithium-ion batteries (LIB), are presented in this roadmap, with safety as an integral consideration throughout the life cycle. At the point of end-of-life (EOL), there is a range of potential options—remanufacturing, reuse and recycling. Diagnostics play a significant role in evaluating the state-of-health and condition of batteries, and improvements to diagnostic techniques are evaluated. At present, manual disassembly dominates EOL disposal, however, given the volumes of future batteries that are to be anticipated, automated approaches to the dismantling of EOL battery packs will be key. The first stage in recycling after the removal of the cells is the initial cell-breaking or opening step. Approaches to this are reviewed, contrasting shredding and cell disassembly as two alternative approaches. Design for recycling is one approach that could assist in easier disassembly of cells, and new approaches to cell design that could enable the circular economy of LIBs are reviewed. After disassembly, subsequent separation of the black mass is performed before further concentration of components. There are a plethora of alternative approaches for recovering materials; this roadmap sets out the future directions for a range of approaches including pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, short-loop, direct, and the biological recovery of LIB materials. Furthermore, anode, lithium, electrolyte, binder and plastics recovery are considered in order to maximise the proportion of materials recovered, minimise waste and point the way towards zero-waste recycling. The life-cycle implications of a circular economy are discussed considering the overall system of LIB recycling, and also directly investigating the different recycling methods. The legal and regulatory perspectives are also considered. Finally, with a view to the future, approaches for next-generation battery chemistries and recycling are evaluated, identifying gaps for research. This review takes the form of a series of short reviews, with each section written independently by a diverse international authorship of experts on the topic. Collectively, these reviews form a comprehensive picture of the current state of the art in LIB recycling, and how these technologies are expected to develop in the future.

Summary: Persistent identifiers (PIDs) provide unique and long-lasting references to entities. They enable unique identification persistently over time and hence play a crucial role in supporting the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. In this paper, we describe how the benefits of PIDs can be amplified by connecting them via their metadata. We are introducing the next step in PID infrastructure: the PID Graph. The PID Graph establishes connections between different entities within the research landscape, thereby enabling both researchers and institutions to access new information. The paper closes with three recommendations, which will help to optimize the use and value of PIDs within the research ecosystem. The Bigger Picture: PIDs provide unique and long-lasting references to entities and play a crucial role in research infrastructure. They enable unique identification persistently over time and contribute to making research entities more FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).The benefits of PIDs can be amplified by connecting them via their metadata. Abstract Background The current study describes several surgical techniques for the treatment of the reverse Hill - Sachs lesion after posterior shoulder dislocation; we also aimed to present long term results followed for a minimum of five years. Methods This study is a prospective case series of 17 patients who were treated in our clinic between 2008 and 2011. Patients with a defect size smaller than 25% of the articular surface were treated conservatively. An endoprosthesis of the glenohumeral joint was implanted in patients with a defect size bigger than 40%. All remaining patients were treated by a variety of operative techniques, depending on the quality of the bone and size of the defect. Results Twelve of seventeen patients had a defect size of the humeral articular surface between 25% and 40% with a mean age of 39 years. Depending on the defect size these patients were treated with retrograde chondral elevation, antegrade cylindrical graft or a graft of the iliac bone crest with an open approach. All the procedures showed fair results, e.g. the open approach with a graft of the iliac bone crest (2010: Dash 3.89, Constant 90.33, Rowe 86.67; 2015: Dash 2.22, Constant 92.00, Rowe 93.33). Conclusion The open approach is not a disadvantage for the functional outcome. The treatment algorithm should involve the superficial size of the defect as well as the depth of the defect and the time interval between the dislocation and the surgical treatment. Background:. Some unfavorable local events following shoulder arthroplasty occur without the patient experiencing symptoms and yet may be detected on diagnostic imaging, thereby serving as indicators of complications that may require revision. Our aim was to create a standardized protocol for an image-based monitoring process for assessing patients who are asymptomatic following shoulder arthroplasty. Methods:. A Delphi exercise was implemented with the participation of an international panel of experienced shoulder surgeons. On the basis of expert opinion from a core steering group, an initial list of imaging parameters for shoulder arthroplasty monitoring of asymptomatic patients was developed and reviewed by panel members. The most appropriate imaging modality was identified. Between each survey, all feedback was considered in order to revise the proposed core set with its definitions and specifications. Consensus was reached upon a two-thirds agreement. Results:. Three online surveys were administered, with 98 surgeons responding to the first and/or the second survey. The response rate for the final survey was 74%. Final parameter definitions were organized in 7 categories (implant migration, radiolucency around implant and implant loosening, signs of shoulder displacement, bone resorption and formation, wear of implant articular surfaces, fractures around the implant, and implant breakage and disassembly) and approved with 85% to 100% agreement. Seventy-eight percent of the panel members agreed on a minimum radiographic imaging schedule: standard anteroposterior and axial (alternatively, Y) views made within 6 weeks after implantation and between 3 and 6 months as well as at 12 months post-surgery. Conclusions:. Our work presents a monitoring tool developed with international consensus for the assessment of asymptomatic patients after shoulder arthroplasty and including a structured core set of radiographic parameters. Clinical application and scientific evaluation of the monitoring process are needed. Clinical Relevance:. This represents a major step toward the standardization of shoulder arthroplasty radiographic monitoring for routine quality controls and research investigations.

In this paper we consider the requirements for preserving the memory of science. This is becoming more challenging as data volumes and rates continue to increase. Further, to capture a full picture of the scientific memory we need to move beyond the bit preservation challenge to consider how to capture research in context, represent the meaning of the data, and how to interpret data in relation to other scientific artefacts distributed in multiple information spaces. We review the progress of scientific research into the digital preservation of science over the last decade, emphasising in particular the research and development programme of STFC. We conclude with a number of observations into the future directions of research and also the practical deployment of policy and infrastructure to effectively preserve the scientific memory.

‘Big Science’ - that is, science which involves large collaborations with dedicated facilities, and involving large data volumes and multinational investments – is often seen as different when it comes to data management and preservation planning. Big Science handles its data differently from other disciplines and has data management problems that are qualitatively different from other disciplines. In part, these differences arise from the quantities of data involved, but possibly more importantly from the cultural, organisational and technical distinctiveness of these academic cultures. Consequently, the data management systems are typically and rationally bespoke, but this means that the planning for data management and preservation (DMP) must also be bespoke.These differences are such that ‘just read and implement the OAIS specification’ is reasonable Data Management and Preservation (DMP) advice, but this bald prescription can and should be usefully supported by a methodological ‘toolkit’, including overviews, case-studies and costing models to provide guidance on developing best practice in DMP policy and infrastructure for these projects, as well as considering OAIS validation, audit and cost modelling.In this paper, we build on previous work with the LIGO collaboration to consider the role of DMP planning within these big science scenarios, and discuss how to apply current best practice. We discuss the result of the MaRDI-Gross project (Managing Research Data Infrastructures – Big Science), which has been developing a toolkit to provide guidelines on the application of best practice in DMP planning within big science projects. This is targeted primarily at projects’ engineering managers, but intending also to help funders collaborate on DMP plans which satisfy the requirements imposed on them.

Network modelling provides a framework for the systematic analysis of needs and options for preservation. A number of general strategies can be identified, characterised and applied to many situations; these strategies may be combined to produce robust preservation solutions tailored to the needs of the community and responsive to their environment. This paper provides an overview of this approach. We describe the components of a Preservation Network Model and go on to show how it may be used to plan preservation actions according to the requirements of the particular situation using illustrative examples from scientific archives.

The challenge of digital preservation of scientific data lies in the need to preserve not only the dataset itself but also the ability it has to deliver knowledge to a future user community. A true scientific research asset allows future users to reanalyze the data within new contexts. Thus, in order to carry out meaningful preservation we need to ensure that future users are equipped with the necessary information to re-use the data. This paper presents an overview of a preservation analysis methodology which was developed in response to that need on the CASPAR and Digital Curation Centre SCARP projects. We intend to place it in relation to other digital preservation practices, discussing how they can interact to provide archives caring for scientific data sets with the full arsenal of tools and techniques necessary to rise to this challenge.

The vertical diffuse attenuation coefficient for downward plane irradiance ( K d ) is an apparent optical property commonly used in primary production models to propagate incident solar radiation in the water column. In open water, estimating K d is relatively straightforward when a vertical profile of measurements of downward irradiance, E d , is available. In the Arctic, the ice pack is characterized by a complex mosaic composed of sea ice with snow, ridges, melt ponds, and leads. Due to the resulting spatially heterogeneous light field in the top meters of the water column, it is difficult to measure at single-point locations meaningful K d values that allow predicting average irradiance at any depth. The main objective of this work is to propose a new method to estimate average irradiance over large spatially heterogeneous area as it would be seen by drifting phytoplankton. Using both in situ data and 3D Monte Carlo numerical simulations of radiative transfer, we show that (1) the large-area average vertical profile of downward irradiance, E d ¯ ( z ) , under heterogeneous sea ice cover can be represented by a single-term exponential function and (2) the vertical attenuation coefficient for upward radiance ( K L u ), which is up to two times less influenced by a heterogeneous incident light field than K d in the vicinity of a melt pond, can be used as a proxy to estimate E d ¯ ( z ) in the water column.

BACKGROUND:Tendon-bone healing following rotator cuff repairs is mainly impaired by poor tissue quality. Demineralised bone matrix promotes healing of the tendon-bone interface but its role in the treatment of tendon tears with retraction has not been investigated. We hypothesized that cortical demineralised bone matrix used with minimally manipulated mesenchymal stem cells will result in improved function and restoration of the tendon-bone interface with no difference between xenogenic and allogenic scaffolds. MATERIALS AND METHODS:In an ovine model, the patellar tendon was detached from the tibial tuberosity and a complete distal tendon transverse defect measuring 1 cm was created. Suture anchors were used to reattach the tendon and xenogenic demineralised bone matrix + minimally manipulated mesenchymal stem cells (n = 5), or allogenic demineralised bone matrix + minimally manipulated mesenchymal stem cells (n = 5) were used to bridge the defect. Graft incorporation into the tendon and its effect on regeneration of the enthesis was assessed using histomorphometry. Force plate analysis was used to assess functional recovery. RESULTS:Compared to the xenograft, the allograft was associated with significantly higher functional weight bearing at 6 (P = 0.047), 9 (P = 0.028), and 12 weeks (P = 0.009). In the allogenic group this was accompanied by greater remodeling of the demineralised bone matrix into tendon-like tissue in the region of the defect (p = 0.015), and a more direct type of enthesis characterized by significantly more fibrocartilage (p = 0.039). No failures of tendon-bone healing were noted in either group. CONCLUSION:Demineralised bone matrix used with minimally manipulated mesenchymal stem cells promotes healing of the tendon-bone interface in an ovine model of acute tendon retraction, with superior mechanical and histological results associated with use of an allograft.

The early history of preventive conservation is characterized by the progressive integration of science into the museum world and the strengthening of collaboration between curators, conservators and scientists. This article traces the development of this discipline in Great Britain and in the United States, examining the role played by museum controversies, public debates, and pre- and post-war efforts, between 1850 and 1950.

All over the world, 60% of museum storage areas are in such appalling conditions that collections can no longer be used for public benefit through learning, research or exhibitions. A methodology for reorganizing storage (RE-ORG), developed by ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), which is freely available online (www.re-org.info), is presented. A case study is offered to show a practical application of the methodology on the Janapada Sampada ethnographic collection of IGNCA (Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts), New Delhi, India.

Italy is a point of reference for the conservation community worldwide, but it has yet to make a definitive leap towards preventive conservation. This paper examines some of the reasons to explain this, in the hope that this may be useful for other countries. After a brief look at the history of preventive conservation from Antiquity to the Second World War, two seldom-discussed Italian initiatives are presented: The Franceschini Commission (1964) and the Pilot plan for the programmed conservation of cultural heritage in Umbria (1976).

The EU Pellucid project is developing an experience management system for public organizations with staff mobility. The paper presents an activity whitin the project focused on searching for information in repositories of documents. The project’s background and the process of information searching are described. Ontological methods such as semantic annotation and similarity searching, as well as ontology- and full-text-based searching are presented. Monitoring of organizational repositories is discussed.
