Cirrus in mid latitudes ( 60° N) develop in a more pristine atmosphere. In this study, we compare the microphysical properties of cirrus measured in mid latitudes and cirrus measured in high latitudes. The analyzed properties are: the ice crystal number concentration (N), effective diameter (ED) and ice water content (IWC) of cirrus from in situ measurements during the CIRRUS-HL campaign in June and July 2021. We use a combination of cloud probes covering ice crystals sizes between 2 and 6400 µm. The differences in cirrus properties are investigated with dependence on altitude and latitude and we show that there exist differences between mid-latitude and high-latitude cirrus. An increase in ED and a reduction in N is observed in high-latitude cirrus compared to mid-latitude cirrus.In order to investigate the cirrus properties in relation to the region of formation, we also combine our measurements with 10-day backward trajectories to identify the location of cirrus formation and the cirrus type: in situ or liquid origin cirrus. According to the latitude of cloud formation and latitude of the measurement, we classify the cirrus in three groups: cirrus formed and measured at mid latitudes (M-M), cirrus formed at mid latitudes and measured at high latitudes (M-H) and cirrus formed and measured at high latitudes (H-H). This analysis shows that part of the cirrus measured at high latitudes are actually formed at mid latitudes and therefore influenced by mid-latitude air masses. We discuss the differences of the cirrus properties under this new classification. Our study helps to advance the understanding of upper-tropospheric cirrus properties at mid and high latitudes in summer and the influence of anthropogenic perturbations.

Despite their proven significance for the atmospheric radiative energy budget, the effect of cirrus on climate and the magnitude of their modification by human activity is not well quantified. Besides anthropogenic pollution sources on the ground, aviation has a large local effect on cirrus microphysical and radiative properties via the formation of contrails and their transition to contrail cirrus. To investigate the anthropogenic influence on natural cirrus, we compare the microphysical properties of cirrus measured at mid-latitude regions (ML, < 60° N) that are often affected by aviation and pollution with cirrus measured in the same season in comparatively pristine high latitudes (HL, ≥ 60° N). The number concentration, effective diameter, and ice water content of the observed cirrus are derived from in situ measurements covering ice crystal sizes between between 2 and 6400 µm collected during the CIRRUS-HL campaign (CIRRUS in High Latitudes) in June and July 2021. We analyse the dependence of cirrus microphysical properties on altitude and latitude and demonstrate that the median ice number concentration is by an order of magnitude larger in the measured mid-latitude cirrus with 0.0086 cm-3 compared to 0.001 cm-3 in high-latitude cirrus. Ice crystals in mid-latitude cirrus are on average smaller than in high-latitude cirrus, with a median effective diameter of 165 µm compared to 210 µm and the median ice water content in mid-latitude cirrus is higher (0.0033 g m-3) than in high-latitude cirrus (0.0019 g m-3). In order to investigate the cirrus properties in relation to the region of formation, we combine the airborne observations with 10-day backward trajectories to identify the location of cirrus formation and the cirrus type: in situ or liquid origin cirrus, depending on whether there is only ice or also liquid water present in the cirrus history, respectively. The cirrus formed and measured at mid-latitudes (M-M) have particularly high ice number concentration and low effective diameter. This is very likely a signature of contrails and contrail cirrus, which is often observed in the in situ origin cirrus type. In contrast, the largest effective diameter and lowest number concentration were found in the cirrus formed and measured at high latitudes (H-H) along with the highest relative humidity over ice (RHi). On average, in-cloud RHi was above saturation in all cirrus. While most of the H-H cirrus were of in situ origin, the cirrus formed at mid-latitudes and measured at high latitudes (M-H) were mainly of liquid origin. A pristine Arctic background atmosphere with scarce availability of ice nuclei and the extended growth of few nucleated ice crystals may explain the observed RHi and size distributions. The M-H cirrus are a mixture of the properties of M-M and H-H cirrus (preserving some of the initial properties acquired at mid-latitudes and transforming under Arctic atmospheric conditions). Our analyses indicate that part of the cirrus found at high latitudes are actually formed at mid-latitudes, and therefore affected by mid-latitude air masses, which have a greater anthropogenic influence.

The NASA Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE) produced a unique dataset for research into aerosol-cloud-meteorology interactions with applications extending from process-based studies to multi-scale model intercomparison and improvement, and remote sensing algorithm assessments and advancements. ACTIVATE used two NASA Langley Research Center aircraft, a HU-25 Falcon and King Air, to conduct systematic and spatially coordinated flights over the northwest Atlantic Ocean amounting to 162 joint flights and 17 other single-aircraft flights between 2020 and 2022 across all seasons. Data cover 574 and 592 cumulative flights hours for the Falcon and King Air, respectively. The HU-25 Falcon flew conducted profiling at different level legs below, in, and just above boundary layer clouds (< 3 km) and obtained in situ measurements of trace gases, aerosol particles, clouds, and atmospheric state parameters. In cloud-free conditions, the Falcon similarly conducted profiling at different level legs within and immediately above the boundary layer. The King Air (the high-flyer) flew at approximately ~9 km conducting remote sensing with a lidar and polarimeter while also launching dropsondes. Collectively, simultaneous data collected from both aircraft help characterize the same vertical column of the atmosphere. In addition to individual instrument files, data from the Falcon aircraft are combined into “merge files” on the publicly available data archive that are created at different time resolutions of interest (e.g., 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 s, or matching an individual data product start and stop times). This paper describes the ACTIVATE flight strategy, instrument and complementary dataset products, data access and usage details, and data application notes.

Contrail cirrus constitute the largest radiative forcing (RF) component of the aviation effect on climate. However, the difference of microphysical properties and radiative effects between contrails, contrail cirrus and natural cirrus clouds are still not completely resolved. Motivated by these uncertainties, we investigate the cirrus perturbed by aviation in the North Atlantic Region on 26 March 2014 during the Mid Latitude Cirrus (ML-CIRRUS) experiment. In the synoptic context of a ridge cirrus cloud, an extended thin ice cloud with many persistent contrails can be observed for many hours with the geostationary Meteosat Second Generation (MSG)/Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) from the morning hours until dissipation close to 14 UTC. Airborne lidar observations aboard the German High Altitude and LOng Range Research Aircraft (HALO) suggest that this cloud is mainly of anthropogenic origin. We develop a new method to distinguish between contrails, contrail cirrus and natural cirrus based on in situ measurements of ice number and NO gas concentrations. It turns out that effective radii (Reff) of contrail cirrus and contrails are in the range of 3 to 53 µm and about 18 % smaller than that of natural cirrus, hence a difference in Reff is still present. Ice particle sizes in contrail cirrus are on average 114 % larger than in contrails. The optical thickness of natural cirrus, contrail cirrus and contrails derived from satellite data has similar distributions with average values of 0.21, 0.24 and 0.15 for these three cloud types, respectively. As for radiative effects, a new method to estimate top-of-atmosphere instantaneous RF in the solar and thermal range is developed based on radiative transfer model simulations exploiting in situ and lidar measurements, satellite observations and ERA5 reanalysis data for both cirrus and cirrus-free regions. Broadband irradiances estimated from our simulations compare well with satellite observations from MSG and the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB), indicating that our method provides a good representation of the real atmosphere and can thus be used to determine RF of ice clouds probed during this flight. Contrails net RF is smaller by a factor of 4 compared to contrail cirrus. On average, the net RF of contrails and contrail cirrus is more strongly warming than that of natural cirrus. For a larger spatial area around the flight path, the RF is well related to that along the flight track. We find warming contrail cirrus and cirrus in the early morning and cooling contrail cirrus and cirrus during the day. The results will be valuable for research to constrain uncertainties in the assessment of climate impacts of natural cirrus and contrail cirrus and for the formulation and evaluation of contrail mitigation options.

Cloud processing is known to generate aerosol species such as sulfate and secondary organic aerosol, yet there is a scarcity of airborne data to examine this issue. The NASA Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE) was designed to build an unprecedented dataset relevant to aerosol-cloud interactions with two coordinated aircraft over the northwest Atlantic, with aerosol mass spectrometer data used from four deployments between 2020–2021 to contrast aerosol composition below, in (using a counterflow virtual impactor), and above boundary layer clouds. Consistent features in all time periods of the deployments (January–March, May–June, August–September) include the mass fraction of organics and relative amount of oxygenated organics (m/z 44) relative to total organics (f44) increasing in droplet residuals relative to below and above cloud. Detailed analysis comparing data below and in cloud suggests a possible role for in-cloud aqueous processing in explaining such results. These results are important as other datasets (e.g., reanalysis) suggest that sulfate is both more abundant than organics (in contrast to this work) and more closely related to drop number concentrations in the winter when aerosol-cloud interactions are strongest; here we show that organics are more abundant than sulfate in the droplet residuals and that aerosol interaction with clouds potentially decreases particle hygroscopicity due to the significant jump in organic : sulfate ratio for droplet residuals relative to surrounding cloud-free air. These results are important in light of the growing importance of organics over the northwest Atlantic in recent decades relative to sulfate owing to the success of regulatory activity over the eastern United States to cut sulfur dioxide emissions.

Mid-latitude marine cold air outbreaks (CAOs) occur in the post-frontal sector of extratropical cyclones. Once advected over the ocean, the marine boundary layer (MBL) quickly deepens and hosts near-overcast clouds that transition into an open-cellular cloud field downwind, mediated by a reduction in aerosol concentrations. Typically, the MBL experiences strong large-scale subsidence that is often associated with free-tropospheric (FT) dry intrusions. Apart from being relatively warm and dry, FT air may have substantially different aerosol properties and, thus, different cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations compared to the MBL.In this study, we examine the difference between MBL and FT air by using in-situ and remote sensing observations collected during NASA's ACTIVATE (Aerosol Cloud Meteorology Interactions over the Western Atlantic Experiment) field campaign in the northwest Atlantic. Analysis of the 8 CAO flights in 2020 reveals predominantly far lesser CCN concentrations in the FT than in the MBL. We investigate one representative flight more deeply, through a fetch-dependent MBL CCN budget that has contributions from sea-surface fluxes, hydrometeor collision-coalescence, and entrainment of FT air. We find a dominant role of FT entrainment in reducing MBL CCN concentrations upwind of strong precipitation that results in cloud regime transition, consistent with satellite-retrieved gradients in droplet number concentration upwind of precipitation.The FT circulation and its relative lack of CCN can accelerate overcast-to-broken cloud transitions, especially where MBL air is CCN-rich (e.g., near continents), and thereby dramatically reduce regional albedo.

Large-eddy simulation (LES) is able to capture key boundary-layer (BL) turbulence and cloud processes. Yet, large-scale forcing and surface turbulent fluxes of sensible and latent heat are often poorly constrained for LES simulations. We derive these quantities from measurements and reanalysis obtained for two cold air outbreak (CAO) events during Phase I of the Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE) in February-March 2020. We study the two contrasting CAO cases by performing LES simulations and test the sensitivity of BL structure and clouds to large-scale forcings and turbulent heat fluxes. Profiles of atmospheric state and large-scale divergence and surface turbulent heat fluxes obtained from the reanalysis data ERA5 agree reasonably well with those derived from ACTIVATE field measurements for both cases at the sampling time and location. Therefore, we adopt the time evolving heat fluxes, wind and advective tendencies profiles from ERA5 reanalysis data to drive the LES simulations. We find that large-scale thermodynamic advective tendencies and wind relaxations are important for the LES to capture the evolving observed BL meteorological states characterized by the hourly ERA5 reanalysis data and validated by the observations. We show that the divergence (or vertical advection) is important in regulating the BL growth driven by surface heat fluxes in LES simulations. The evolution of liquid water path is largely affected by the evolution of surface heat fluxes. The liquid water path simulated in LES agrees reasonably well with the ACTIVATE measurements. This study paves the path to investigate aerosol-cloud-meteorology interactions using LES informed and evaluated by ACTIVATE field measurements.

Oceanic low level clouds strongly affect the atmospheric radiation budget. Uncertainties in their microphysical properties and cover currently limit the accuracy of climate predictions. Further, studies quantifying the relative importance of aerosol and dynamics on cloud properties in specific meteorological regimes are poorly constrained by observations in the Western North Atlantic boundary layer.Low level clouds were measured during the Aerosol Cloud meTereology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE) campaign in winter and summer 2020. The two NASA LaRC research aircraft HU-25 Falcon and UC-12 B-200 King Air conducted 35 simultaneous flights to investigate aerosol-cloud interactions of maritime clouds and their impact on radiation. Number concentration, liquid water content, ice water content, and particle size distribution in the size range of 3 µm to 1460 µm in diameter were measured with the fast forward scattering cloud probe (FCDP) and 2-dimensional optical array imaging probe (2D-S) onboard the Falcon. Here, we present an overview of late winter (February-March) and late summer (August-September) oceanic cloud properties in the region 65°W to 80°W and 30°N to 40°N. We compare cloud properties in these two seasons and investigate their dependence on meteorological parameters and aerosol abundance. In a case study, we present cloud observations in a cold air outbreak event on 1 March 2020 with a specific focus on mixed-phase clouds.

We study the dynamics and formation of differently ordered lateral phases of interfacial lipid layers for two types of lipid systems, a vesicle-supported bilayer and a Langmuir–Blodgett monolayer, both in experiment and by simulation. Similarly, we investigate the dynamics of objects embedded in a simpler interface given by an air–water surface and demonstrate the surface-acoustic-wave-actuated separation of enantiomers (chiral objects) on the surface of the carrier fluid. It turns out that the dynamics and the separation of the phases do not only depend on parameters such as temperature, mobilities and line tension but also on the mechanics of the lipid layers subjected to exterior forces as, for instance, compression, extensional and shear forces in film-balance experiments. Since the mechanical behavior of lipid layers is viscoelastic, we use a modeling approach based on the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with a viscoelastic stress term and a capillary term, a convective Jeffrey (Oldroyd) equation of viscoelasticity, and the Cahn–Hilliard equation with a transport term. The numerical simulations are based on C0-interior-penalty discontinuous-Galerkin methods for the Cahn–Hilliard equation. Model-validation results and the verification of the simulation results by experimental data are presented. The feasibility of enantiomer separation by surface-acoustic-wave-generated vorticity patterns is shown both experimentally and through numerical simulations. This technique is cost-effective and provides an extremely high time resolution of the dynamics of the separation process compared to more traditional approaches. The experimental setup is an enhanced Langmuir–Blodgett film balance with a surface-acoustic-wave-generated vorticity pattern of the fluid, where model enantiomers (custom-made photoresist particles) float on the surface of the carrier fluid. For the simulations, we propose a finite element immersed boundary method (FEIBM) for deformable enantiomers and a fictitious-domain approach based on a distributed Lagrangian multiplier finite element immersed boundary method (DLM-FEIBM) for rigid chiral objects, both of which lead to simulation results consistent with experiments.
