Momentum strategies have historically delivered large alphas, yet they also displayed significant time-variation that is not very well understood. I document that expected momentum profits vary negatively with the formation period return difference between past winners and losers, which I term the momentum gap. A one standard deviation increase in the momentum gap predicts a 1.29% decrease in the monthly momentum return after controlling for existing predictors. I find consistent results across 21 international stock markets. Following the simple real-time strategy of investing in momentum only when the momentum gap is below the 80th percentile generates monthly returns of 1.28%. ∗Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University. SNM1A is a nuclease required to repair DNA interstrand cross-links (ICLs) caused by some anticancer compounds, including cisplatin. Unlike other nucleases involved in ICL repair, SNM1A is not needed to restore other forms of DNA damage. As such, SNM1A is an attractive target for selectively increasing the efficacy of ICL-based chemotherapy. Using a fluorescence-based exonuclease assay, we screened a bioactive library of compounds for inhibition of SNM1A. Of the 52 compounds initially identified as hits, 22 compounds showed dose–response inhibition of SNM1A. An orthogonal gel-based assay further confirmed nine small molecules as SNM1A nuclease activity inhibitors with IC50 values in the mid-nanomolar to low micromolar range. Finally, three compounds showed no toxicity at concentrations able to significantly potentiate the cytotoxicity of cisplatin. These compounds represent potential leads for further optimization to sensitize cells toward chemotherapeutic agents inducing ICL damage.

A 16-year-old female presents to a community emergency room following a suicide attempt by hanging. Prehospital, on arrival of paramedics, the patient was in a pulseless electrical activity rhythm. Paramedics provided advanced cardiac life support for 20 minutes before they obtained return of spontaneous circulation. In the emergency department, she had another 25-minute cardiac arrest with ultimate return of spontaneous circulation. She is now hemodynamically stable on Levophed 0.2 µg/kg/min. Her neurological exam shows pupils to be 3 mm and fixed bilaterally, absent cough and gag, and no response to central or peripheral pain. She occasionally triggers 2–3 spontaneous breaths per minute above the set rate on the ventilator. Her CT head scan shows severe anoxic changes and cerebral edema.

Funding for educational innovations is increasingly scarce in academic medicine. While there is some funding for medical education research, this is often for discovery or application work, and there are few avenues for those with a heavy innovation focus to fund early work.The objective was to develop an intrapreneurial unit focused on medical education projects and scholarship.The GridlockED and TriagED games are educational orSales for GridlockED began in March 2018 and the TriagED began in November 2019. In the first year, sales for GridlockED yielded a total of $9,534. After 18 months of sales, the fund has accrued a total of $14,530. The fund has helped finance the development of new games. Additionally, the fund awarded two internal $500 Kickstarter grants to assist with evaluating and improving two local education projects. The GridlockED and TriagED games have also spurred multiple academic opportunities for junior educators interested in this domain: five workshops, eight conference abstracts, two peer-reviewed papers, and two research protocols are being developed.The GridlockED and TriagED games represent a new academically oriented, intrapreneurial approach to medical education work.

Human sparganosis is a cestode infection which is neglected as a differential diagnosis outside endemic countries. Diagnosis and therapy may be challenging depending on the clinical presentation and anatomic localization. The disease manifests predominantly as subcutaneous nodule(s) or intracranial mass lesion(s). Infection is primarily acquired by ingesting raw or undercooked amphibian or reptile flesh or by drinking water containing copepods. We report an unusual case of subcutaneous Spirometra erinaceieuropaei sparganosis presenting with two nonmigratory nodules in close proximity to each other on the right thigh of a Thai woman living in Switzerland.

This article reviews the impact of wide-awake hand surgery without tourniquet on departmental settings and savings on patients' medical cost, and efficiency of fellowship training and practice of junior hand surgeons in 3 units in 3 countries. The medical cost of the commonly performed procedures is decreased remarkably with this approach in the 3 units. Hand surgery fellowship training and practice of junior surgeons are benefited from this approach in 2 units in Turkey and Switzerland. Overall, this approach improves the surgeons' and patients' quality of life and its application is expanding to almost all procedures of hand surgery.

Background Free Open-Access Medical education (FOAM) use among residents continues to rise. However, it often lacks quality assurance processes and residents receive little guidance on quality assessment. The Academic Life in Emergency Medicine Approved Instructional Resources tool (AAT) was created for FOAM appraisal by and for expert educators and has demonstrated validity in this context. It has yet to be evaluated in other populations. Objectives We assessed the AAT's usability in a diverse population of practicing emergency medicine (EM) physicians, residents, and medical students; solicited feedback; and developed a revised tool. Methods As part of the Medical Education Translational Resources: Impact and Quality (METRIQ) study, we recruited medical students, EM residents, and EM attendings to evaluate five FOAM posts with the AAT and provide quantitative and qualitative feedback via an online survey. Two independent analysts performed a qualitative thematic analysis with discrepancies resolved through discussion and negotiated consensus. This analysis informed development of an initial revised AAT, which was then further refined after pilot testing among the author group. The final tool was reassessed for reliability. Results Of 330 recruited international participants, 309 completed all ratings. The Best Evidence in Emergency Medicine (BEEM) score was the component most frequently reported as difficult to use. Several themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: for ease of use-understandable, logically structured, concise, and aligned with educational value. Limitations include deviation from questionnaire best practices, validity concerns, and challenges assessing evidence-based medicine. Themes supporting its use include evaluative utility and usability. The author group pilot tested the initial revised AAT, revealing a total score average measure intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of moderate reliability (ICC = 0.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0 to 0.962). The final AAT's average measure ICC was 0.88 (95% CI = 0.77 to 0.95). Conclusions We developed the final revised AAT from usability feedback. The new score has significantly increased usability, but will need to be reassessed for reliability in a broad population.

Healthcare organizations strive to deliver safe, high-quality, efficient care. These complex systems frequently harbor gaps, which if unmitigated, could result in harm. Systems-focused simulation (SFS) projects, which include systems-focused debriefing (SFD), if well designed and executed, can proactively and comprehensively identify gaps and test and improve systems, enabling institutions to improve safety and quality before patients and staff are placed at risk.The previously published systems-focused debriefing framework, Promoting Excellence and Reflective Learning in Simulation (PEARLS) for Systems Integration (PSI), describes a systematic approach to SFD. It includes an essential “pre-work” phase, encompassing evidence-informed steps that lead up to a SFD. Despite inclusion in the PSI framework, a detailed description of the pre-work phase, and how each component facilitates change management, was limited.The goal of this paper is to elucidate the PSI “Pre-work” phase, everything leading up to the systems-focused simulation and debriefing. It describes how the integration of project and change management principles ensures that a comprehensive collection of safety and quality issues are reliably identified and captured.

OBJECTIVE: GridlockED gameplay workshops were delivered in Canada. This project investigated workshop attendees’ experiences, seeking to identify learning points to inform improvement of the workshop. METHODS: GridlockED sessions were held through 2018 and 2019. Workshops targeted medical trainees. After a standardized video, learners played for approximately 90 minutes. Learners completed a postgameplay survey with 7‐point Likert scale questions about their experience. RESULTS: Seventy‐two participants responded to our survey (41 medical students, 13 physician assistant students, 12 emergency medicine residents, and six faculty members). Trainees rated GridlockED as both enjoyable and a meaningful educational experience, with a mean (±SD) rating of 6.53 (±0.96) of 7 for enjoyment and 6.17 (±1.13) for education. Attendees identified teamwork and communication (49%) as the most helpful learning domain, with patient flow (43%) being second and basics of how the ED worked (31%) being third. The respondents self‐identified top areas of learning as resource management (38.9%), improved understanding of various provider roles in the ED (33%), and improved communication skills (33%). CONCLUSION: Medical learners identified GridlockED to be an educational and enjoyable learning experience. Attendees reported that playing this serious game assisted with learning about health systems and communication.

Background The use of serious games as an educational tool may be an effective strategy to improve knowledge and skill among health care trainees. GridlockED is a serious board game designed to simulate a shift in the emergency department (ED) that incorporates concepts such as prioritization in a multipatient environment and stewardship of finite resources. Serious games can present concepts to learners that are not easily accessible through other teaching methods. GridlockED was designed to demonstrate the principles behind ED flow and how to prioritize in a complex multipatient environment. The objective of this study was to identify teaching points to which learners are exposed while playing the GridlockED game. Methods We conducted a prospective, observational study from May to August 2017. Practicing emergency physicians, residents, and nurses were recruited as participants to play GridlockED. Participants were instructed on how to play the game and then engaged in playing GridlockED, during which their gameplay was video recorded. The videos of the play sessions were qualitatively analyzed using an interpretive description technique. All teaching points explicitly stated by players or implicitly observed by researchers were recorded. Results Teaching points were identified in the GridlockED play sessions centered around the concepts of patient prioritization and staff placement. Major themes present in gameplay, as well as deviations from reality and frequent misconceptions about emergency care, were also identified. Conclusion Observations of experienced ED practitioners reveal that the GridlockED board game creates opportunities for engaging medical learners in systems-level teaching. Our findings will help create the basis for future education modules, but further study is required to ensure that junior trainees actually learn when playing the game.

DNA interstrand crosslinks (ICLs) covalently join opposing strands, blocking both replication and transcription, therefore making ICL-inducing compounds highly toxic and ideal anti-cancer agents. While incisions surrounding the ICL are required to remove damaged DNA, it is currently unclear which endonucleases are needed for this key event. SNM1A has been shown to play an important function in human ICL repair, however its suggested role has been limited to exonuclease activity and not strand incision. Here we show that SNM1A has endonuclease activity, having the ability to cleave DNA structures that arise during the initiation of ICL repair. In particular, this endonuclease activity cleaves single-stranded DNA. Given that unpaired DNA regions occur 5′ to an ICL, these findings suggest SNM1A may act as either an endonuclease and/or exonuclease during ICL repair. This finding is significant as it expands the potential role of SNM1A in ICL repair.

ObjectiveIn 2015 and 2016, the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine (CJEM) Social Media (SoMe) Team collaborated with established medical websites to promote CJEM articles using podcasts and infographics while tracking dissemination and readership.MethodsCJEM publications in the “Original Research” and “State of the Art” sections were selected by the SoMe Team for podcast and infographic promotion based on their perceived interest to emergency physicians. A control group was composed retrospectively of articles from the 2015 and 2016 issues with the highest Altmetric score that received standard Facebook and Twitter promotions. Studies on SoMe topics were excluded. Dissemination was quantified by January 1, 2017 Altmetric scores. Readership was measured by abstract and full-text views over a 3-month period. The number needed to view (NNV) was calculated by dividing abstract views by full-text views.ResultsTwenty-nine of 88 articles that met inclusion were included in the podcast (6), infographic (11), and control (12) groups. Descriptive statistics (mean, 95% confidence interval) were calculated for podcast (Altmetric: 61, 42-80; Abstract: 1795, 1135-2455; Full-text: 431, 0-1031), infographic (Altmetric: 31.5, 19-43; Abstract: 590, 361-819; Full-text: 65, 33-98), and control (Altmetric: 12, 8-15; Abstract: 257, 159-354; Full-Text: 73, 38-109) articles. The NNV was 4.2 for podcast, 9.0 for infographic, and 3.5 for control articles.DiscussionLimitations included selection bias, the influence of SoMe promotion on the Altmetric scores, and a lack of generalizability to other journals.ConclusionCollaboration with established SoMe websites using podcasts and infographics was associated with increased Altmetric scores and abstract views but not full-text article views.

OBJECTIVE Journals use social media to increase the awareness of their publications. Infographics show research findings in a concise and visually appealing manner, well suited for dissemination on social media platforms. We hypothesized that infographic abstracts promoted on social media would increase the dissemination and online readership of the parent research articles. METHODS Twenty-four articles were chosen from the six issues of CJEM published between July 2016 and June 2017 and randomized to infographic or control groups. All articles were disseminated through the journal’s social media accounts (Twitter and Facebook). Control articles were promoted using a screen capture image of each article’s abstract on the journal’s social media accounts. Infographic articles were promoted similarly using a visual infographic. Infographics were also published and promoted on the CanadiEM.org’s website and social media channels. Abstract views, full-text views, and the change in Altmetric score were compared between groups using unpaired two-tailed t-tests. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the groups at baseline. Abstract views (mean, 95% CI) were higher in the infographics (379, 287-471) than the control group (176, 136-215, p

Problem As patient volumes increase, it is becoming increasingly important to find novel ways to teach junior medical learners about the intricacies of managing multiple patients simultaneously and about working in a resource-limited environment. Approach Serious games (i.e., games not intended purely for fun) are a teaching modality that have been gaining momentum as teaching tools in medical education. From May 2016 to August 2017, the authors designed and tested a serious game, called GridlockED, to provide a focused educational experience for medical trainees to learn about multipatient care and patient flow. The game allows as many as six people to play it at once. Gameplay relies on the players working collaboratively (as simulated members of a medical team) to triage, treat, and disposition "patients" in a manner that simulates true emergency department operations. After researching serious games, the authors developed the game through an iterative design process. Next, the game underwent preliminary peer review by experienced gamers and practicing clinicians, whose feedback the authors used to adjust the game. Attending physicians, nurses, and residents have tested GridlockED for usability, fidelity, acceptability, and applicability. Outcomes On the basis of initial testing, clinicians suggest that this game will be useful and has fidelity for teaching patient-flow concepts. Next steps Further play testing will be needed to fully examine learning opportunities for various populations of trainees and for various media. GridlockED may also serve as a model for developing other games to teach about processes in other environments or specialties.

The current-induced spin polarization and momentum-dependent spin-orbit field were measured in In$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As epilayers with varying indium concentrations and silicon doping densities. Samples with higher indium concentrations and carrier concentrations and lower mobilities were found to have larger electrical spin generation efficiencies. Furthermore, current-induced spin polarization was detected in GaAs epilayers despite the absence of measurable spin-orbit fields, indicating that the extrinsic contributions to the spin polarization mechanism must be considered. Theoretical calculations based on a model that includes extrinsic contributions to the spin dephasing and the spin Hall effect, in addition to the intrinsic Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, are found to qualitatively agree with the experimental results., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Tissue engineering can provide alternatives to current methods for tracheal reconstruction. Here we describe an approach for ectopic engineering of vascularized trachea based on the implantation of co-cultured scaffolds surrounded by a muscle flap. Poly(L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) or poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds were seeded with chondrocytes, bone marrow stem cells and co-cultured both cells respectively (8 groups), wrapped in a pedicled muscle flap, placed as an ectopic culture on the abdominal wall of rabbits (n = 24), and harvested after two and four weeks. Analysis of the biochemical and mechanical properties demonstrated that the PCL scaffold with co-culture cells seeding displayed the optimal chondrogenesis with adequate rigidity to maintain the cylindrical shape and luminal patency. Histological analysis confirmed that cartilage formed in the co-culture groups contained a more homogeneous and higher extracellular matrix content. The luminal surfaces appeared to support adequate epithelialization due to the formation of vascularized capsular tissue. A prefabricated neo-trachea was transferred to the defect as a tracheal replacement and yielded satisfactory results. These encouraging results indicate that our co-culture approach may enable the development of a clinically applicable neo-trachea.

Introduction: The management of patient flow in the emergency department (ED) is crucial for the practice of emergency medicine (EM). However, this skill is difficult to teach didactically and is learned implicitly in the latter half of residency training. To help expedite the learning process, we developed the GridlockED board game as an educational tool to simulate ED patient flow. By having junior medical trainees play this game, we believe that they will develop a greater understanding of patient flow and resource management in the ED. Additionally, since GridlockED is a cooperative game, players may also benefit by improving their communication and teamwork skills. Methods: GridlockED was developed over twenty months of iterative gameplay and review. Feedback from attending emergency physicians, residents, and medical students was integrated into the game through a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model. Emergency medicine nurses, physicians and residents at McMaster University were recruited to play GridlockED. Each player completed a pre-survey to collect demographic data and to assess their prior experience with playing board games. All play sessions were recorded for data collection purposes. Following each game session, a member of the research team conducted an exit interview with the players to gather information about their play experience and the educational value of the game. A post-survey was also sent to each participant for further feedback. Results: Eighteen gameplay sessions were conducted from June to August 2017. A total of thirty-two participants played the game (13 emergency physicians, 15 residents, and four nurses). Overall responses to the post-gameplay survey showed that players endorsed GridlockED as a useful potential teaching tool (75%, n=24/32) and the majority felt that it had the potential to improve patient flow in the ED (56%, n=18/32). Most participants found that the game was easy to play (91%, n=27/29), and that the instructions were clear (87.5%, n=28/32). Respondents also felt that the game reflected real life scenarios (56%, n=18) and that cases reflected the types of patients that they saw in the ED (78%, n=25). Conclusion: Our results have shown an overall positive response to GridlockED, with most participants supporting it as both an engaging board game and potential teaching tool. We believe that future studies with larger sample sizes and medical students will further validate the use of serious games in medical education.

We propose and demonstrate trapping and rotation of microparticles and biological samples with a moire-based rotating optical tweezers. We show that polystyrene beads, as well as Escherichia coli cells, can be rotated with ease, while the speed and direction of rotation are fully controllable by a computer, obviating mechanical movement or phase-sensitive interference. Furthermore, we demonstrate experimentally the generation of white-light propelling beams and arrays, and discuss the possibility of optical tweezing and particle micro-manipulation based on incoherent white-light rotating patterns.

Sequence variability in two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) regions, namely cytochromecoxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 (nad4), and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of rDNA among and within three cestodes,Spirometra erinaceieuropaei,Taenia multicepsandTaenia hydatigena, from different geographical origins in China was examined. A portion of thecox1 (pcox1),nad4 genes (pnad4) and the ITS (ITS1+5.8S rDNA+ITS2) were amplified separately from individual cestodes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Representative amplicons were subjected to sequencing in order to estimate sequence variability. While the intra-specific sequence variations within each of the tapeworm species were 0–0.7% for pcox1, 0–1.7% for pnad4 and 0.1–3.6% for ITS, the inter-specific sequence differences were significantly higher, being 12.1–17.6%, 18.7–26.2% and 31–75.5% for pcox1, pnad4 and ITS, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses based on the pcox1 sequence data revealed thatT. multicepsandT. hydatigenawere more closely related to the other members of theTaeniagenus, andS. erinaceieuropaeiwas more closely related to the other members of theSpirometragenus. These findings demonstrated clearly the usefulness of mtDNA and rDNA sequences for population genetic studies of these cestodes of socio-economic importance.

Cardiac tamponade in systemic sclerosis is rare. We report four cases of SSc with hemodynamically significant pericardial effusions associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension, three of whom died, two following pericardiocentesis. Of 26 SSc cases reported in the literature with large pericardial effusions, seven were associated with PAH. Including our series, the mortality rate is 55%.The potential contributory role of PAH in the development of pericardial effusion and the management implications are explored. In SSc patients with hemodynamically significant pericardial effusions and severe pulmonary hypertension, initial stabilization of pulmonary artery pressure and right heart function with vasoactive therapy and then cautious pericardial drainage should be considered.

Applying a voltage to a semiconductor sample generates a current-induced electron spin polarization (CISP). Using an ultrafast mode-locked laser and lock-in detection scheme, we measure CISP on an indium gallium arsenide epilayer via Faraday rotation and extract the spin generation rate. While the measured spin polarization initially increases linearly with electric field as observed in previous work, larger applied voltages lead to a decreasing spin generation rate. We show that we can recover the linear dependence of spin generation rate with electric field even at larger applied voltages by modifying the applied voltage waveform to reduce heating and multiplying by an appropriate correction factor. Future CISP studies can utilize this technique to investigate CISP under larger applied electric fields.

Introduction: With the increasing volume of medical literature published each year, it is difficult for clinicians to translate the latest research into practice. Awareness is the first step of knowledge translation and journals have begun using social media to increase the dissemination and awareness of their publications. Infographics can describe research findings visually, are shared broadly on social media, and may be a more effective way to convey information. We hypothesized that infographic abstracts would increase the social media dissemination and online readership of research articles relative to traditional abstracts. Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, 24 original research articles were chosen from the six issues of the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine (CJEM) published between July 2016 and May 2017 (4 articles per issue). Half were randomized to the infographic and control groups within each issue. Infographic articles were promoted using a visual infographic outlining the findings of the article. Control articles were promoted using a screen capture image of each articles abstract. Both were disseminated through the journals social media accounts (Twitter and Facebook) along with the link to the selected article. Infographics were also published on CanadiEM.org. Abstract views, full text views, and the change in Altmetric score were tracked for 30 days and compared between groups. Unpaired two-tailed t-tests were used to detect significant differences. Results: Abstract views (mean, SD) were significantly higher for infographic articles (378.9, 162.0) than control articles (175.5, 69.2, pConclusion: CJEM articles promoted on social media using infographics had higher abstract viewership and Altmetric scores than those promoted with traditional abstracts. Although there was no difference in full-text readership, our results suggest that infographic abstracts may have a role in increasing the dissemination of medical literature.

Summary Objective This study aimed to examine whether spatial–temporal patterns of dengue can be used to identify areas at risk of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Methods Three indices – probability of case-occurrence, mean duration per wave, and transmission intensity – were used to differentiate eight local spatial–temporal patterns of dengue during the 2002 epidemic in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. DHF densities (DHF cases/km 2 per 100 dengue cases) in each spatial–temporal typed area were compared. Results Areas with three high indices correlated with the highest DHF density: (1) high transmission intensity only; (2) long duration of wave only, and (3) high transmission intensity plus long duration of wave. However, cumulative incidences of dengue cases were not correlated with DHF densities. Conclusion Three spatial–temporal indices of dengue could provide useful information to identify areas at high risk of DHF.

In this paper, two particular kinds of defects are investigated. The number of Queue-time defects is strongly impacted by environmental conditions. In the ambient environment, Q-time defects form easily and the number increases greatly with longer queue time. Q-time defect growth can be suppressed indefinitely by storing queued wafers under vacuum or in a nitrogen environment. SEM and EDX analyses show that Q-time defects mostly occur along the Cu line edge and are mainly very small Cu oxide particles. The formation mechanism of Q-time defects is discussed. Another commonly encountered defect - Cu metal missing - which is associated more commonly with previous processing steps, is also discussed.

This study analyzed the spatio-temporal patterns of 4,587 (94% of the total) confirmed dengue cases in Kaohsiung and Fengshan Cities (a two-city area) that occurred in Taiwan from 2001 to 2003. The epidemic had two simultaneous distinct diffusion patterns. One was a contiguous pattern, mostly limited to 1 km from an initial cluster, reflecting that there was a rapid dispersal of infected Aedes aegypti and viremic persons. The second followed a relocation pattern, involving clusters of cases that diffused over 10 weeks starting from the southern and moving to the northern parts of the two-city area. The virus from one clustering site jumped to several distant areas where it rapidly dispersed through a series of human-mosquito transmission cycles to several localities. In both patterns, transmission of disease quickly enlarged the epidemic areas. Future dengue control efforts would benefit from a timely syndromic surveillance system plus extensive public education on how to avoid further transmission.

We report on the modification of the g-factor by an in-plane electric field in an In$_{0.031}$Ga$_{0.969}$As epilayer. We performed external magnetic field scans of the Kerr rotation of the InGaAs film in order to independently determine the g-factor and the spin-orbit fields. The g-factor increases from $-0.4473\pm0.0001$ at 0 V/cm to $-0.4419\pm0.0001$ at 25 V/cm applied along the [1$\overline{1}$0] crystal axis. In addition, spatially-resolved spin measurements show a g-factor dependence on diffusive velocity. The change in g-factor with electric field can have a large effect on the determination of the internal spin-orbit and nuclear fields from Larmor precession frequency measurements., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Some of the leading theories of momentum have different empirical predictions that depend on market composition and structure. The institutional theory predicts lower momentum profits in markets with less agency. Behavioral theories predict lower profits in markets with more sophisticated investors. In this paper, we use a dataset from a major 19th century equity market to test these predictions. We find no evidence to support the institutional theory due to the lack of delegated management. We exploit a regulatory change in the middle of our sample period to test behavioral theories. We find evidence consistent with overreaction theories of momentum.

Two prospective synchronous regional audits involving three tertiary plastic surgery units in mixed service hospitals were carried out to study delays in the management of emergency patients and their possible causes. Each audit was over a one‐month period. These prospective studies investigated “fasting times” (the length of time that an individual patient was fasted prior to definitive management) and “injury to theatre time” (the time span from the time of injury to the time of surgery for patients going to the operating theatre). Results are analysed and discussed and recommendations for improvement are offered.

Introduction: The CJEM Social Media Team was created in 2014 to assist the journal with the dissemination of its research online. It consists of two Social Media Editors (Junior and Senior) and a team of volunteer medical students and residents to assist their work. Collaborative promotional agreements were developed to promote CJEM articles on the Skeptics’ Guide to Emergency Medicine (SGEM) podcast through the ‘Hot off the Press’ (HOP) series and the CanadiEM blog through an infographic series. Methods: CJEM papers were selected for promotion by the Team based on their perceived interest to the online community of emergency physicians. Altmetric scores, which are a measure of online dissemination derived from a weighted algorithm of social media metrics, were collated for articles promoted using the SGEM HOP or CanadiEM blogs. A control group was created using the articles with the top two Altmetric scores in each CJEM issue in 2015 and 2016. Erratum, Letters, and articles written by the social media editors were excluded from the control groups. The success of the social media promotion was quantified through the measurement of Altmetric scores as of January 1, 2017. Unpaired two-tailed t-tests with unequal variance were used to test for significant differences. Results: 106 and 82 eligible articles were published in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Four articles in 2015 and two articles in 2016 were excluded from the control groups because they were written by the social media editors. SGEM HOP podcasts promoted one article in 2015 and five articles in 2016. CanadiEM infographics promoted three articles in 2015 and eight articles in 2016. No articles were promoted in both series. The average Altmetric score was higher for SGEM HOP (61.0) than CanadiEM Infographics (31.5, pConclusion: The results suggest that collaborating with established social media websites to promote CJEM articles using podcasts and infographics increases their social media dissemination. Given the nonrandomized design of these results, causative conclusions cannot be drawn. A randomized study of the impact of social media promotion on readership is underway.

The information-based theory of Hong and Stein (1999) predicts lower momentum profits in markets with lower informational frictions. The institutional theory of Vayanos and Woolley (2013) predicts lower momentum profits in markets with less agency. In this paper we use a dataset from a major 19th century equity market to test these predictions. Over this period there was no evidence of delegated management in Imperial Russia. A regulatory change in 1893 made speculating on the St. Petersburg stock market more accessible to small investors. We find a momentum effect that is similar in magnitude to those in modern markets, and stronger during the post-1893 period than during the pre-1893 period, consistent with the overconfidence theory of momentum.

Lipolytic esterification of geraniol and acetic acid in an organic solvent was investigated. A surfactant-coated lipase (SCL) was designed to enhance the esterification. The ester product, geranyl acetate, is an important component of flavor and fragrance compounds. Fatty acids such as acetic acid cause substantial deactivation of lipase, resulting in low esterification yields. SCL is expected to prevent direct contact of organic solvent and the substrates with lipase, thereby decreasing enzyme deactivation. The lipase from Candida cylindrecea interacted with the surfactant Span 85 in a buffer of pH 5.2 to form SCL for the esterification of geraniol and acetic acid. The SCL possessed low solubility in organic solvents which is beneficial for the recovery and repeated usage of enzyme. At the condition of [geraniol]/[acetic acid] = 2, lipase/surfactant = 0.5 and in isooctane at 35°C, the esterification yields after 24 and 36 h were 83.7 and 97%, respectively, which were much higher than those obtained by using reverse micelles and powdered lipase. The organic solvent had a dramatic effect on the esterification yield. The polarity of the product, substrate, and organic phase were used as the criteria for solvent selection. The SCL was easy to prepare, could be repeatedly used, and exhibited long-term stability. The esterification efficiency remained unchanged after nine days of use.

We demonstrate optical trapping and manipulation of aerosols with an optical bottle beam generated by the moire techniques. We observe stable trapping and back-and-forth transportation of a variety of absorbing carbon particles suspended in air, ranging from clusters of nanosized buckminsterfullerene C60 to micrometer-sized carbon powders.

We demonstrate optical trapping and manipulation of C 60 nano-aerosols with optical bottle beams. This method based on the Moire technique can be used for trapping a variety of absorbing nano-particles suspended in air.

We demonstrate linear and nonlinear control of the ballistic trajectory of an optical beam. Such control is realized by sending a Gaussian beam into a phase mask and then turn it into an accelerating Airy beam. We show how an optical beam can be set into motion in a general ballistic trajectory, while the range and height of the trajectory can be controlled at ease. In addition, we study linear propagation of deformed Airy beams in free space by varying the angle between two "wings", which leads to wing flipping and change in acceleration. Finally, we demonstrate nonlinear control of two-dimensional Airy beams with self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities, and found that the Airy beams initially driven by a self-defocusing nonlinearity exhibit anomalous diffraction and can be more robust as compared to those driven by a self-focusing nonlinearity. Our results bring about a possibility to send an intense laser beam into any desired location, passing through disordered media and getting over obstacles.

Two-dimensional Airy beams controlled with self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities exhibit unexpected behavior in free-space and scattering media, including stagnation and anomalous diffraction, and resistance to vibration and distortion, solely depending on the initial control.

We generate optical beams with rotating intensity blades, namely “optical propellers”, by employing Moire technique. Such rotating beams are controlled by SLM without mechanical movement or phase-sensitive interference. Self-trapping of propelling beams is also demonstrated.

We demonstrate controlled rotation of micro-particles with multi-trap rotating tweezers established with optical propelling beams. Such propelling beams contain rotating intensity blades generated by Moire technique but with no mechanical movement or phase-sensitive interference.

First-order phase transitions are characterized by a discontinuity in the first derivative of free energy and are of great interest in materials science, physics, and chemistry. Dynamically probing the transition in the phase space of pressure P, temperature T and volume V helps to reveal the fundamental mechanism underlying the phase transition. A good example is the condensation-evaporation process between a liquid and its vapor. When the vapor is compressed isothermally below the critical temperature, P first increases following the ideal gas law, then reaches a plateau where liquid droplets nucleate out of the vapor forming a liquidvapor coexisting system. In this coexisting state the compressibility of the system diverges because the decrease in total V is accounted for by the conversion of more vapor into denser liquid rather than to increase P as in the pure ideal gas. After completion of the transition, P increases sharply with further reduction in V due to the low compressibility of

Correlated electron materials can undergo a variety of phase transitions, including superconductivity, the metal-insulator transition and colossal magnetoresistance. Moreover, multiple physical phases or domains with dimensions of nanometres to micrometres can coexist in these materials at temperatures where a pure phase is expected. Making use of the properties of correlated electron materials in device applications will require the ability to control domain structures and phase transitions in these materials. Lattice strain has been shown to cause the coexistence of metallic and insulating phases in the Mott insulator VO(2). Here, we show that we can nucleate and manipulate ordered arrays of metallic and insulating domains along single-crystal beams of VO(2) by continuously tuning the strain over a wide range of values. The Mott transition between a low-temperature insulating phase and a high-temperature metallic phase usually occurs at 341 K in VO(2), but the active control of strain allows us to reduce this transition temperature to room temperature. In addition to device applications, the ability to control the phase structure of VO(2) with strain could lead to a deeper understanding of the correlated electron materials in general.

We demonstrate particle-like soliton interaction and rotation in Bessel-like photonic lattices. Attractive and repulsive rotations as well as planet-like orbiting of two solitons were observed with different initial phase relations.

We profile the local carrier concentration, n, across epitaxial InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) consisting of 3D islands on top of a 2D alloy layer. We use scanning thermoelectric microscopy to measure a profile of the temperature gradient-induced voltage, which is converted to a profile of the local Seebeck coefficient, S. The S profile is then converted to a conduction band-edge profile and compared with Poisson-Schrodinger band-edge simulations. Our combined computational-experimental approach suggests a reduced carrier concentration in the QD center in comparison to that of the 2D alloy layer. The relative roles of free carrier trapping and/or dopant expulsion are discussed.

A case is described in which hot irrigation fluid used during a routine knee arthroscopy caused severe morbidity. The patient sustained full-thickness skin burns requiring debridement, a muscle flap, and split-skin grafting. The extent of the joint damage required fusion. The underlying factors included equipment failure but also a delay in appreciating the severity of the soft-tissue damage. This case highlights the need for a robust protocol for the management of warming the irrigation fluid, as well as monitoring the actual fluid temperature.
