The combined effects of grain digestibility and dietary fibre on digesta passage rate and satiety in humans are poorly understood. Sustainable canola production is essential to meet growing human demands for vegetable oil, biodiesel, and meal for stock feed markets. Blackleg, caused by the fungal pathogen, Leptosphaeria maculans is a devastating disease that can lead to significant yield loss in many canola production regions worldwide. Breakdown of race-specific resistance to L. maculans in commercial cultivars poses a constant threat to the canola industry. To identify new alleles, especially for quantitative resistance (QR), we analyzed 177 doubled haploid (DH) lines derived from an RP04/Ag-Outback cross. DH lines were evaluated for QR under field conditions in three experiments conducted at Wagga Wagga (2013, 2014) and Lake Green (2015), and under shade house conditions using the ‘ascospore shower’ test. DH lines were also characterized for qualitative R gene-mediated resistance via cotyledon tests with two differential single spore isolates, IBCN17 and IBCN76, under glasshouse conditions. Based on 18,851 DArTseq markers, a linkage map representing 2,019 unique marker bins was constructed and then utilized for QTL detection. Marker regression analysis identified 22 significant marker associations for resistance, allowing identification of two race-specific resistance R genes, Rlm3 and Rlm4, and 21 marker associations for QR loci. At least three SNP associations for QR were repeatedly detected on chromosomes A03, A07 and C04 across phenotyping environments. Physical mapping of markers linked with these consistent QR loci on the B. napus genome assembly revealed their localization in close proximity of the candidate genes of B. napus BnaA03g26760D (A03), BnaA07g20240D (A07) and BnaC04g02040D (C04). Annotation of these candidate genes revealed their association with protein kinase and jumonji proteins implicated in defense resistance. Both Rlm3 and Rlm4 genes identified in this DH population did not show any association with resistance loci detected under either field and/or shade house conditions (ascospore shower) suggesting that both genes are ineffective in conferring resistance to L. maculans in Australian field conditions. Taken together, our study identified sequence-based molecular markers for dissecting R and QR loci to L. maculans in a canola DH population from the RP04/Ag-Outback cross.

Acid soils limit yields of many important crops including canola (Brassica napus), Australia’s third largest crop. Aluminium (Al3+) stress is the main cause of this limitation primarily because the toxic Al3+ present inhibits root growth. Breeding programmes do not target acid-soil tolerance in B. napus because genetic variation and convincing quantitative trait loci have not been reported. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using the BnASSYST diversity panel of B. napus genotyped with 35 729 high-quality DArTseq markers. We screened 352 B. napus accessions in hydroponics with and without a toxic concentration of AlCl3 (12 μM, pH 4.3) for 12 days and measured shoot biomass, root biomass, and root length. By accounting for both population structure and kinship matrices, five significant quantitative trait loci for different measures of resistance were identified using incremental Al3+ resistance indices. Within these quantitative trait locus regions of B. napus, 40 Arabidopsis thaliana gene orthologues were identified, including some previously linked with Al3+ resistance. GWAS analysis indicated that multiple genes are responsible for the natural variation in Al3+ resistance in B. napus. The results provide new genetic resources and markers to enhance that Al3+ resistance of B. napus germplasm via genomic and marker-assisted selection.

In acid soils, the toxic form of aluminium, Al3+, significantly inhibits root growth and elongation, leading to less water and nutrient uptake. Previous research had shown differential Al toxicity tolerance among cultivated Cicer arietinum L. (chickpea); however, the potential for developing tolerant cultivars is limited by the narrow genetic diversity of cultivated chickpeas. Recent collections from Turkey of wild Cicer species, Cicer reticulatum, and Cicer echinospermum, have increased the available gene pool significantly, but there has been no large-scale screening of wild Cicer for acid tolerance or Al3+ toxicity tolerance. This study evaluated 167 wild Cicer and 17 Australian chickpea cultivars in a series of screenings under controlled growth conditions. The pH of 4.2 and Al concentrations of 15 and 60 μM Al were selected for large-scale screening based on dose response experiments in a low ionic strength nutrient solution. The change in root length showed better discrimination between tolerant and sensitive lines when compared with shoot and root dry weights and was used as a selection criterion. In a large-scale screening, 13 wild Cicer reticulatum accessions had a higher root tolerance index (≥50%), and eight had higher relative change in root length (≥40%) compared with PBA Monarch, which showed greater tolerance among the Australian domestic cultivars screened. In general, C. reticulatum species were found to be more tolerant than C. echinospermum, while genetic population groups Ret_5, Ret_6, and Ret_7 from Diyarbakir and Mardin Province were more tolerant than other groups. Among C. echinospermum, Ech_6 from the Siv-Diyar collection site of the Urfa Province showed better tolerance than other groups. In this first detailed screening of aluminium toxicity tolerance in the new wild Cicer collections, we identified accessions that were more tolerant than current domestic cultivars, providing promising germplasm for breeding programs to expand chickpea adaptation to acid soils.

Drought stress due to water deficiency threatens production of canola worldwide. Carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C), a trait that can be used to assess efficient water use, provides an opportunity to exploit natural variation in canola for stable production. Here, we show that substantial genetically controlled phenotypic variation in water use efficiency (WUE) component trait, Δ13C (20.4 to 23.6‰) exists among accessions of canola. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis revealed ten loci for Δ13C, each accounting for 2.5% to 16.5% of the genotypic variation. One of the significant QTL for Δ13C was co‐localized with a QTL for flowering time, a trait implicated in drought escape and was mapped in the vicinity of the FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) on chromosome A07. FI appeared to decrease with increasing MRT. MRT increased and intake decreased with grain-based foods/feeds that have low starch digestibility and substantial amounts of insoluble fibre.

Undigested nutrients and fermentable fibre in the distal ileum and colon stimulate intestinal brakes, which reduce gastric-emptying and digesta-passage-rate, and subsequently limit feed/food-intake. Fibre can also stimulate passage rate potentially increasing feed intake (FI). In order to experimentally determine the relationships between these two hypothesised actions of fibre, five levels of wheat-bran (WB) or oat-hulls (OH) were added to a highly digestible starch-based diet fed to pigs ad-libitum for three weeks. Average-daily-feed-intake (ADFI), faecal short-chain-fatty-acids (SCFA) and related parameters were determined at 7, 14 and 21d. A linear mixed model was fitted to FI and fermentation parameters. Overall, WB diets showed 8-11% lower ADFI (7-14d: p < 0.05; 7-21 & 0-21d: p = 0.053) than OH diets. WB diets produced over 20% more (21d: p < 0.01) SCFA than OH or Control diets. WB at 25% produced 22% more (7d: p < 0.05) SCFA than any other diet. Diets with WB at 25 and 35%, showed higher hydration capacity than any other diet (p < 0.001). OH at 10% had an unusually low FI and a markedly higher hydration capacity. With increasing levels of OH, intake of base diet was 7% more than control at 5% OH, but 8% less than control at 20% OH. With increasing WB content, intake of base diet decreased. From these results, we propose that three mechanisms control the effects of fibre on FI: initial increase in passage rate and feed intake at low concentrations of non-swelling fibres; a depression in FI from high fibre bulk; and reduced feed intake from stimulation of ileal and colonic brakes.

Multi-environment wheat trials provide valuable information on the extent of genotype x environment interaction, the stability of genotypes and define and confirm agro-ecological regions through associations among sites. The All India Coordinated Crop Improvement Project on wheat evaluates candidates for release across the wheat growing regions of India. To facilitate this process the wheat area is divided into six agro-ecological zones; the northwestern plains zone (NWPZ), the northeastern plains zone (NEPZ), the central zone (CZ), the peninsular zone (PZ), the northern hills zone (NHZ) and the southern hills zone (SHZ). Factor analytic (FA) models were used to analyze the genotype x environment interaction for yield of 813 wheat genotypes evaluated at 136 locations across the six agro-ecological zones in 1307 individual advanced variety trials between 2008/09 and 2012/13. Genotype x environment interaction was firstly assessed separately within each of the six established agro-ecological zones. Key locations with a high genetic correlation with all other locations within each zone were identified. Predicted genetic values of important cultivars that were represented in a wider range of environments within each zone were estimated and highly stable genotypes were found. Genotype x environment interaction was subsequently assessed across agro-ecological zones. Only those environments where the models accounted for > 99% of the genetic variance were retained for further analysis and two smaller zones (NHZ and SHZ) with little or no genotype congruence with other agro-ecological zones were removed. Thus 476 genotypes from 488 environments were included in the analysis. Fifteen clusters of environments with similar patterns of adaptation were found. These clusters were then characterized based on zonal classification, sowing time, irrigation regime, latitude and year and three regions broadly representing the main wheat growing areas of India were identified. These regions represent a combination of the NWPZ and NEPZ defined by latitude, a central region that combines CZ locations with northern PZ locations and a southern region comprised of southern PZ sites. Further stratification of these zones was then possible based on sowing time and irrigation practice. One cluster of 29 environments had a high average genetic correlation (r = 0.75) with most other environments and production zones. These represent key locations where larger numbers of entries might be grown in future seasons as they are the best predictors of yield across cropping zones.

Large variation in the nutritional value of cereal grains, within and between animal types, is due predominantly to differences in digestive tract anatomy, site and extent of microbial fermentation, and amount and type of dietary fibre. Energy available from digestion is reduced by grain fibre in pigs, broilers and ruminants. The effects are greatest for broilers and least for ruminants, reflecting large differences in intestinal microbial populations. Individual grain samples are often better suited for digestion by one animal type than another. In pigs, the extent of starch digestion in the small intestine scales with the rate of amylase diffusion into grain particles, grain particle size and the time particles have for digestion, determined by residence time of digesta to the terminal ileum. Amylase diffusion rate is influenced by endosperm tissue and cell wall integrity, solubility of grain protein matrix, composition of starch and processing methods. Rate of passage of digesta to the terminal ileum increases as fibre content of the diet increases to similar to 15% neutral detergent fibre (NDF), then declines with additional fibre causing distention of the stomach. Diet hydration capacity, which is influenced by soluble fibre content, slows digesta passage rate once it exceeds similar to 1.2 g water/g dry matter. Undigested starch reaching the colon causes a decrease in passage rate through activation of the ileal/colonic brakes. Voluntary feed intake in monogastric animals is related to rate of passage to the terminal ileum for nutritionally balanced grain-based diets. Approximately 15% of energy in starch fermented in the large intestine is lost to the pig as heat, methane and microbial products excreted in faeces. Algorithms predicting effects of diet fibre, water-holding capacity and amylase diffusion rate can be used to predict threshold grain particle size, where all starch is digested by the terminal ileum, and the likely loss of energy through fermentation.

The amount of energy available for metabolism from grain-based feeds determines pig growth rate. Available energy is influenced by feed intake (FI) and the relative extent of digestion in the small intestine (SI), compared with fermentation of undigested feed in the large intestine (LI). Milled and steam-flaked sorghum and wheat were used to evaluate the following hypotheses: 1) an increase in grain digestibility increases FI, decreases the extent of large-intestinal fermentation and improves the efficiency of feed use; and 2) faecal short-chain-fatty-acids (SCFA) and pH are indicators of the extent of grain fermentation in the LI. Apparent-amylase-diffusion-coefficients (ADC) were measured in vitro as an indicator of intrinsic starch digestibility. Pigs were fed ad libitum the four grain-based diets. FI, average-daily-weight-gain (ADG), feed-conversion-ratio (FCR, FI:ADG), faecal SCFA-concentration and pH were measured weekly. Linear models were fitted between: 1) ADC and ADG, FCR, SCFA-concentration, and pH; 2) ADG and SCFA-concentration, and pH; and 3) FCR and SCFA-concentration, and pH. Drought stress, especially at the reproductive stage, is a major limiting factor that compromises the productivity and profitability of canola in many regions of the world. Improved genetics for drought tolerance would enable the identification and development of resilient cultivars, resulting in increased canola production. The main objective of the present study was to dissect the genetic basis of seed yield of canola under water-limited conditions. A doubled haploid population derived from a cross between two Australian parental lines, RP04 and Ag-Outback, was evaluated to identify the genetic variation in fractional normalised deviation vegetative index (NDVI), aboveground shoot biomass accumulation, flowering time and plasticity in seed yield under irrigated and rainfed field conditions in two consecutive years. An irrigation treatment was applied at the 50% flowering stage and an incremental drought tolerance index (DTI) was estimated for seed yield. By utilising a genetic linkage map based on 18851 genome-wide DArTseq markers, we identified 25 genomic regions significantly associated with different traits (logarithm of odds (LOD) ≥ 3), accounting for 5.5–22.3% of the genotypic variance. Three significant genomic regions on chromosomes A06, A10 and C04 were associated with DTI for seed yield. Some of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) were localised in the close proximity of candidate genes involved in traits contributing to drought escape and drought avoidance mechanisms, including FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) and FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). Trait-marker associations identified herein can be validated across diverse environments, and the sequence-based markers may be used in a marker assisted selection breeding strategy to enhance drought tolerance in canola breeding germplasm.

An Illumina Infinium array comprising 5306 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers was used to genotype 175 individuals of a doubled haploid population derived from a cross between Skipton and Ag-Spectrum, two Australian cultivars of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). A genetic linkage map based on 613 SNP and 228 non-SNP (DArT, SSR, SRAP and candidate gene markers) covering 2514.8 cM was constructed and further utilized to identify loci associated with flowering time and resistance to blackleg, a disease caused by the fungus Leptosphaeria maculans. Comparison between genetic map positions of SNP markers and the sequenced Brassica rapa (A) and Brassica oleracea (C) genome scaffolds showed several genomic rearrangements in the B. napus genome. A major locus controlling resistance to L. maculans was identified at both seedling and adult plant stages on chromosome A07. QTL analyses revealed that up to 40.2% of genetic variation for flowering time was accounted for by loci having quantitative effects. Comparative mapping showed Arabidopsis and Brassica flowering genes such as Phytochrome A/D, Flowering Locus C and agamous-Like MADS box gene AGL1 map within marker intervals associated with flowering time in a DH population from Skipton/Ag-Spectrum. Genomic regions associated with flowering time and resistance to L. maculans had several SNP markers mapped within 10 cM. Our results suggest that SNP markers will be suitable for various applications such as trait introgression, comparative mapping and high-resolution mapping of loci in B. napus.

Several genome-wide significant associations were detected at known and new loci for blackleg resistance. We further validated statistically significant associations in four genetic mapping populations, demonstrating that GWAS marker loci are indeed associated with resistance to L. maculans. One of the novel loci identified for the first time, Rlm12, conveys adult plant resistance in canola.” Blackleg, caused by Leptosphaeria maculans, is a significant disease which affects the sustainable production of canola (Brassica napus). This study reports a genome-wide association study based on 18,804 polymorphic SNPs to identify loci associated with qualitative and quantitative resistance to L. maculans. Genomic regions delimited with 694 significant SNP markers, that are associated with resistance evaluated using 12 single spore isolates and pathotypes from four canola stubble were identified. Several significant associations were detected at known disease resistance loci including in the vicinity of recently cloned Rlm2/LepR3 genes, and at new loci on chromosomes A01/C01, A02/C02, A03/C03, A05/C05, A06, A08, and A09. In addition, we validated statistically significant associations on A01, A07, and A10 in four genetic mapping populations, demonstrating that GWAS marker loci are indeed associated with resistance to L. maculans. One of the novel loci identified for the first time, Rlm12, conveys adult plant resistance and mapped within 13.2 kb from Arabidopsis R gene of TIR-NBS class. We showed that resistance loci are located in the vicinity of R genes of Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica napus on the sequenced genome of B. napus cv. Darmor-bzh. Significantly associated SNP markers provide a valuable tool to enrich germplasm for favorable alleles in order to improve the level of resistance to L. maculans in canola.

In recent decades several pasture legumes have been available in southern Australia as potential alternatives to the most widely used annual pasture legume Trifolium subterraneum. Little is known about their soil phosphorus (P) requirements, but controlled environment experiments indicate that at least some may differ in their P fertiliser requirements. In this study, pasture legume varieties, including T. subterraneum as the reference species, were grown at up to four sites in any one year over a 3-year period (in total, seven site × year experiments) to measure herbage growth responses in spring to increased soil P availability. A critical soil test P concentration (corresponding to 95% maximum yield) was estimated for 15 legumes and two pasture grasses. The critical soil P requirements of most of the legumes did not differ consistently from that of T. subterraneum, indicating their soil fertility management should follow the current soil test P guidelines for temperate Australian pastures. However, the critical P requirement of Medicago sativa was higher than that of T. subterraneum, but remains ill-defined because extractable soil P concentrations in these experiments were often not high enough to permit a critical P estimate. Three forage crop legumes (Trifolium incarnatum, Trifolium purpureum, Trifolium vesiculosum) and two pasture legumes (Ornithopus compressus, Ornithopus sativus) had lower critical soil test P concentrations. It may be feasible to manage pastures based on these species to a lower soil test P benchmark without compromising yield.

Mixing measurements provide valuable information about dough strength and stability (STAB) traits. These measurements are important in milling and baking operations, and for varietal selection in wheat breeding programmes. There are several techniques with different sample sizes used for measuring these traits so there is interest in examining the agreement between methods in terms of genotypic (varietal) rankings. This issue has been investigated by using two different mixing methods, a small-scale Mixograph (2 g) and large-scale Farinograph (50 g) using data from a doubled haploid population (190 lines) from a Chara (excellent dough strength)×WW2449 (poor dough strength) cross. The cross was grown in a field trial at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute (WWAI) in 2000. Eleven mixing traits were measured and compared according to a statistical design. The estimated genetic correlation matrix for six of the 11 mixing traits, dough development time (DDT), STAB, mixing tolerance index (MTI), maximum bandwidth (MBW), bandwidth at peak resistance (BWPR) and peak resistance (PR) revealed that for these dough-strength-related parameters, both methods were measuring equivalent traits, although individual parameters had widely different coefficients of variation. In this population, PR was correlated with the extensibility trait length determined by large-scale extension testing. None of the large-scale or small-scale mixing traits was an effective predictor of the small-scale extensibility parameter extensibility at Rmax (Ext_Rmax). The data verified that small-scale Mixograph tests are a robust and efficient alternative to large-scale Farinograph tests for both commercial breeding and research.

Capacity to routinely, accurately and cost-effectively measure variation in the nutritional quality of feed ingredients before diet formulation represents a fundamental pillar of sustainable pork production worldwide. Factors driving sustainable pork production include pork price, feed cost, utilisation of co-products and downgraded raw materials and variation in pork production, with all being related to the definition and ultimate nutritional quality of feed ingredients. The present paper defines rapid measures of nutritional quality in feed ingredients for pigs and demonstrates the range that can exist in these parameters, specifically digestible energy of cereal grains and the reactive-lysine concentration of oilseed meals. It provides an overview of the development of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) calibrations for key nutritional-quality parameters and how they are being applied by the pork industry. Adjunct ways to measure nutritional quality of feed ingredients for pigs such as the glucose-release index and how these can be used in conjunction with NIRS are reviewed. The paper reports advanced correlation analysis between chemical components and digestible-energy concentration of cereals, and how these could be used for screening of NIRS outliers, and discusses future opportunities for application of nutritional-quality analysis using NIRS calibrations, including feed intake and portable solutions. Using advanced NIRS calibrations for digestible energy in cereals and reactive lysine in oilseed meals, pork producers will ensure that they make best use of limited resources and, as a consequence, pork will remain a nutritionally accretive food source for increasingly discerning consumers worldwide.

Resistance to pod shattering (shatter resistance) is a target trait for global rapeseed (canola, Brassica napus L.), improvement programs to minimise grain loss in the mature standing crop, and during windrowing and mechanical harvest. We describe the genetic basis of natural variation for shatter resistance in B. napus and show that several quantitative trait loci (QTL) control this trait. To identify loci underlying shatter resistance, we used a novel genotyping-by-sequencing approach DArT-Seq. QTL analysis detected a total of 12 significant QTL on chromosomes A03, A07, A09, C03, C04, C06, and C08; which jointly account for approximately 57% of the genotypic variation in shatter resistance. Through Genome-Wide Association Studies, we show that a large number of loci, including those that are involved in shattering in Arabidopsis, account for variation in shatter resistance in diverse B. napus germplasm. Our results indicate that genetic diversity for shatter resistance genes in B. napus is limited; many of the genes that might control this trait were not included during the natural creation of this species, or were not retained during the domestication and selection process. We speculate that valuable diversity for this trait was lost during the natural creation of B. napus. To improve shatter resistance, breeders will need to target the introduction of useful alleles especially from genotypes of other related species of Brassica, such as those that we have identified.

Animal scientists and their funding organisations need to ensure investment in research is maximised by strict adherence to the scientific method and the rigorous design and analysis of experiments. Statisticians should be considered as equals in the research process, engaged from the beginning of research projects and appropriately funded. The importance of experimental design that accounts for factors affecting the primary experiment measurement is illustrated in two examples. One shows how failure to involve a statistician at the beginning of a project resulted in considerable waste of resources. Subsequent engagement of professional statisticians with rigorous experimental design and analysis led to greatly increased precision in the standard error of an estimate for the digestible energy content of cereal grains for pigs from ± 0.35 MJ/kg to ± 0.16 MJ/kg. The other example shows the effect of the percentage of diets replicated during pelleting and of the total number of pigs required in the experiment on the P-values associated with detecting a pairwise difference between two grains differing in digestible energy content by 0.33 MJ/kg. Decisions based on these relationships have animal welfare and resource allocation implications.

Selection of wheat germplasm for a range of quality traits has been a challenging exercise because of the cost of testing, the variation within testing data, and a poor understanding of the underlying genetics. The objective of this study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) underlying quality traits in wheat. A doubled haploid population comprising 190 lines from Chara/WW2449 was grown in two different environments and evaluated for various quality traits. A molecular map comprising 362 markers based upon simple sequence repeat, sequence tagged microsatellite, glutenin, and DArT loci was constructed and subsequently exploited to identify QTLs using a whole-genome approach. Fifteen QTLs that were consistent in the two different environments were identified for thousand kernel mass, grain protein content, milling yield, flour protein content, flour colour, flour water absorption, dough development time, dough strength (extensograph height and resistance at 5 cm), and dough extensibility (extensograph length) using the whole genome average interval mapping approach. The amount of genetic variation explained by individual QTLs ranged from 3% to 49%. A number of QTLs associated with dough strength, dough extensibility, dough development time, and flour water absorption were located close to the glutenin Glu-B1 locus on chromosome 1B. Identification of the chromosomal location and effect of the QTLs influencing wheat quality may hasten the development of superior wheats for target markets via marker-assisted selection.

While the genetic control of wheat processing characteristics such as dough rheology is well understood, limited information is available concerning the genetic control of baking parameters, particularly sponge and dough (SD) baking. In this study, a quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis was performed using a population of doubled haploid lines derived from a cross between Australian cultivars Kukri x Janz grown at sites across different Australian wheat production zones (Queensland in 2001 and 2002 and Southern and Northern New South Wales in 2003) in order to examine the genetic control of protein content, protein expression, dough rheology and sponge and dough baking performance. The study highlighted the inconsistent genetic control of protein content across the test sites, with only two loci (3A and 7A) showing QTL at three of the five sites. Dough rheology QTL were highly consistent across the 5 sites, with major effects associated with the Glu-B1 and Glu-D1 loci. The Glu-D1 5 + 10 allele had consistent effects on SD properties across sites; however, there was no evidence for a positive effect of the high dough strength Glu-B1-al allele at Glu-B1. A second locus on 5D had positive effects on SD baking at three of five sites. This study demonstrated that dough rheology measurements were poor predictors of SD quality. In the absence of robust predictive tests, high heritability values for SD demonstrate that direct selection is the current best option for achieving genetic gain in this product category.

Composition, dough mixing, extensional rheological properties and baking properties of a set of 160 double haploid lines grown in two different environments were assessed in order to establish linkages between regions of the wheat genome and wheat quality traits. Further studies are required to rigorously test the impact of loci associated with rheological parameters on baking properties, as there are clear differences between the genetic control of rheological and baking parameters.

Early crop vigour in canola, as in other crops, is likely to result in greater competition with weeds, more rapid canopy closure, improved nutrient acquisition, improved water-use efficiency, and, potentially, greater final grain yield. Laborious measurements of crop biomass over time can be replaced with newer remote-sensing technology to aid data acquisition. Normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) is a surrogate for biomass accumulation that can be recorded rapidly and repeatedly with inexpensive equipment. In seven small-plot field experiments conducted over a 4-year period with diverse canola germplasm (n = 105), we have shown that NDVI measures are well correlated with final grain yield. We found NDVI values were most correlated with yield (r >0.7) if readings were taken when the crop had received 210–320 growing degree-days (usually the mid-vegetative phase of growth). It is suggested that canola breeders may use NDVI to objectively select for vigorous genotypes that are more likely to have higher grain yields.

Conservation cropping systems with no-till and stubble retention improve soil condition and water conservation. However, tillage is replaced by herbicides for weed control in these systems, increasing the threat of herbicide resistance. In the medium to high rainfall zones of the southern wheatbelt of Australia and under irrigation, wider row spacing is used to enable seeding into heavy stubble loads and to avoid stubble burning. Some evidence suggests that wider rows lead to reduced crop competitive ability and crop yields, greater herbicide dependence, and increased spread of resistance. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that increasing seeding rate compensated for reduced competitive ability at wider row spacings, especially when herbicide performance was suboptimal. We examined the impact of two wheat row spacings (18 and 36 cm) and five seeding rates (resulting in a range of densities of ~80–700 plants/m2) on control of Lolium rigidum with five rates of post-emergence application of diclofop-methyl (Hoegrass®), ranging from label rate to lower rates, over two growing seasons. In the presence of L. rigidum, wheat grain yield was unaffected by row spacing but was significantly reduced at low seeding rates, especially at lower herbicide rates. Lolium rigidum was suppressed at higher crop densities but was also unaffected by row spacing. Grain yield was maximised when post-emergence herbicide was applied at 60–100% of the recommended dose at wheat densities >~300 plants/m2. Significant levels of the weed remained in the crop at anthesis in all treatments. Weed dry matter ranged from 525 g/m2 at low crop densities and with no herbicide to 150 g/m2 with the recommended rate of herbicide and high wheat densities. The implications of manipulating crop competitive ability to improve weed control are discussed, especially in conditions where herbicide performance is unreliable due to weeds developing herbicide resistance or adverse environmental conditions.

The variation in field pea grain yield and competitiveness with annual ryegrass due to crop density, row spacing and cultivar was determined to enable farmers to better manage weeds with cultural control tactics. Crop density varied with seeding rate, cultivar, row spacing and year. Higher seeding rates were required to reach equivalent plant densities in cv. Dinkum (short, semi-leafless) compared with cv. Dundale (tall, conventional-leaf), and at 36 cm compared with 18 cm row spacing. Field pea grain yield was reduced more at low crop densities, in Dinkum, at 36 cm row spacing, and in the presence of weeds. Percentage yield losses from weed competition were similar in both cultivars (about 70–80%) at a low density of 10 plants/m2 in 2 seasons. At higher crop densities Dinkum had a larger loss than Dundale (i.e. at 30 plants/m2 losses were 60 and 35%, respectively, compared with 50 and 5% at 60 plants/m2). Seasonal variation influenced the effect of crop density on yield loss from weeds. The percentage yield loss from weeds in 1993 ranged from about 90 to 40% at plant densities of 10 to 40 plants/m2, in contrast to 1995 when 40% yield loss occurred at all these densities. Ryegrass dry weight was reduced with increasing field pea density in both years, and in the tall more than the short cultivar in 1 year. Maintaining recommended field pea seeding rates has considerable financial benefits in both weed-free (around $100/ha) and weed-affected crops (to $400/ha). In weedy situations, integrating cultural practices such as higher seeding rates and choice of cultivar that enhance crop competitiveness will improve weed management in south-eastern Australia.

Land preparation for canola (oilseed rape; Brassica napus L.) by conventional cultivation can involve a number of workings, resulting in soil degradation and reduced crop growth. Minimum-tillage systems may help overcome these problems, but the placement of fertiliser at sowing must avoid chemical injury to germinating seed. The responses of canola cultivars to tillage and fertiliser placement were studied for 2 seasons at high (Breakfast Creek, 1997; Harden, 1998) and low (Ardlethan, 1997–98) rainfall sites. The tillage treatments were conventional cultivation, one-pass, and no-till (direct drill). The fertiliser treatments were 200 kg/ha 'starter' fertiliser (a�compound fertiliser supplying 30 kg N, 26 kg P and 22 kg S/ha) either placed with the seed, or broadcast, or banded to the side and 3 cm below the seed. In 1997 the canola was sown after wheat, and in 1998 after pasture. Plant establishment of all cultivars was reduced by 40–65% when fertiliser was placed with the seed; tillage treatment did not alter this response. Placing fertiliser with the seed reduced dry matter/m2 by up to 40% in plants at flowering, but by physiological maturity, there were no differences in dry matter/m2 due to fertiliser placement. Analysis of the combined seed yields for both years showed that although plants in the with-seed placement compensated by producing more seed/plant, this compensation was sufficient only at Breakfast Creek for yields to be comparable to those of the other fertiliser placements. Tillage had little effect on seed yields. In 1997, no-till yielded more than one-pass at Ardlethan, but in 1998 at Ardlethan no-till yielded less than the other tillage systems. Fertiliser placement and tillage had no effect on seed oil concentration and meal protein content. Cone penetrometer measurements (1998) showed no differences in soil strength between tillage treatments at Ardlethan; while at Harden, one-pass had less soil strength than the other tillage treatments. Crop water extraction was not affected by tillage at any site. It is concluded that a conservation-farming system involving no-till or one-pass tillage, and separation of seed and fertiliser has the potential for producing high yielding canola crops, reducing the risk of soil degradation, as well as saving time and land-preparation costs.
