Project Halo’s aim is to assist in habitat restoration and biodiversity. Within its initial years the focus was on increasing sightings of Tui within urban areas of Hamilton city. The reason initial an effort focussed on this species was because a viable breeding population was known to exist within a 20 kilometre winter feeding range of the bird. Research had shown that Tui, a nectarivorous species, do not need ‘corridors’ unlike other wildlife and they are known to commute into the city to feed on abundant exotic plants and, more increasingly with the assistance of volunteer groups, native plant species.

A personal sampling device is described which may be used to determine the mean personal exposure of workers to hydrogen sulphide and carbon disulphide in high fire risk areas in viscose rayon and cellulose film factories. The device consists of a two-chamber respirator cartridge connected to a respirometer and face piece. Hydrogen sulphide is collected in the first chamber containing cotton wool impregnated with cadmium acetate and a humectant, while the second chamber, containing 5A molecular sieve material, collects the carbon disulphide. The hydrogen sulphide is subsequently liberated by acid in an analytical train and estimated by methylene blue formation. The carbon disulphide is subsequently released by heating in a stream of nitrogen and estimated by colour formation in an ethylene diamine-copper acetate reagent. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A high-temperature ultrasonic interferometer for the study of propagation properties of shear waves through molten glasses below 1600°C and between 3 and 23 MHz is described. Techniques for measuring velocity and absorption of the transmitted echoes are presented with special emphasis on the study of shear waves in the relaxation region of a molten glass. In this case, an absorption per wavelength as high as 5.4 Np/cycle was measured; this is more than twice the capability of previously reported equipment. The use of a lock-in amplifier in the video circuit made this work possible. This method of handling the transmitted echoes not only suppressed noise by 25 dB, but also permitted measurements of pulse heights to better than 0.1 dB.
