Abstract Accent and tones are essential prosodic elements in accentual and tonal languages that have evolved from Strauss (1963), Le Gac (2000) to Di Cristo (2013). These elements fulfill morphematic manifestations in languages that cannot be omitted when talking or writing in a language. This prosodic importance is also manifested both in the Spanish language and in the Taguana language, which are recognized as accentual and tonal, respectively. In this article, we will describe and explain the functions of the accent in the Spanish language and describe the tonal functions in the Tagouana language, then contrast those elements, emphasizing the functional similarities between both prosodic elements mentioned above.

- Abstract
The place of the First Language (L1), in the classroom has been studied by many researchers in relation to the advantages and disadvantages of the use of the mother tongue in foreign language (FL) courses. This study aimed at uncovering the main reasons for which participants use the L1, in this case Spanish in an EFL course and finding out students’ perceptions of the use of their L1 in an EFL course. This study was carried out at a Mexican undergraduate programme. Participants were 11 students who were enrolled in a basic English course from a business and economics undergraduate programmes during the first semester of 2019. The study used a qualitative method and followed an action research design. Data were collected through observation in situ, a questionnaire and a cross-language exploration assessment task. Findings reveal that the participants have a great acceptance of the Spanish use in the English class. Most of the participants agreed that they use Spanish for different reasons: to translate vocabulary, to socialize, to ask questions, to participate, to compare answers or vocabulary, and to compare similarities and differences between L1 and EFL. All in all, the use of the Spanish is something that is always present in language courses.

In 1989 and 1990, Kitty van Leuven-Zwart published two articles on the similarities and dissimilarities between a translation and its original. My research is based on a classification model which derives primarily from Van Leuven-Zwart's comparative method, although I also work with concepts from other authors. The major difference to Van Leuven-Zwart's research is that the main aim of the model I propose is not to indicate the differences between a translation and the original, but to detect whether previous translations have had any influence upon the studied translation. The goal of this article is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the shift approach to find out the relationship between different translations. I explain and illustrate the classification model by comparing the Catalan translation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth by Josep M. de Sagarra (1959) with previous French, Spanish and Catalan translations in order to ascertain whether these texts had any influence upon Sagarra's translation. This article has the purpose of highlighting a symbolic configuration of the Renaissance period and its corresponding historical practices. We will investigate the marks of the world and the use of symbols in the establishment of human bonds. The approach will be guided by the order of Similarities, mediated by the reading of Michel Foucault, with contributions by Ernst Kantorowicz, with the study of The King's two Bodies. We will present, in a territorial context, the scenario of a political system called macrophysics of sovereignty. In addition to an exposition of the sovereign king, we will pay attention to the presence of the patriarchal family model, both connected in this analysis by an exercise of power strengthened by the propagation and circulation of symbolic marks in the world. PMBOK and PRINCE 2, similarities and differences ABSTRACT There are different standards focused on project management. Examples of these standards are the PMBOK Guide and PRINCE2 method. This article deals with some similitudes that may be perceived between the works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and those of Plato. We intend to examine mainly the existent resemblances concerning eloquence and the power of discourse, as much as they have political actions as their ends. We aim at demonstrating that both authors attribute both positive and negative traits to discourse and eloquence. In order to achieve these goals, we shall use mainly the works Essay on the origin of languages and Discourse on the origin of inequality, by Rousseau, and Phaedrus and Gorgias, by Plato.

PARABLES - Abstract
Most recent studies of Q are built on the assumption that Q is not much more extensive than the double tradition, a questionable assumption given that Mark is much more extensive than the components of Mark that are found in both Matthew and Luke and that Matthew’s selective rather than consecutive approach to Q may have caused him to leave out many verses of Q. This article considers three similitudes unique to Luke that begin with the phrase τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν (Lk. 11.5-8; 14.28-33; 17.7-10) as well as one that is paralleled in Matthew but has been omitted from the Critical Edition (Lk. 14.5 par. Mt. 12.11-12) and argues that all four of these passages are from Q. The criteria of Vassiliadis and Kloppenborg for finding Q passages in Lukan Sondergut are used, with particular emphasis on Kloppenborg’s ‘stylistic coherence’. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper establishes the similarities and differences between the infantile and juvenile narrative written in Catalan and in Basque (1975-1990) from the previous characterization and separately of both literary systems. The historical period established to determine such convergences and differences obeys to which so much in the territories of Catalan speech since in those of Basque there happens a reappearance of the Infantile and Juvenile Literature that coincides with the use and study of the historical language and the literature of the territory. The principal similarity between both studied narratives is that, since in the rest of Europa, texts are published by a few thematic common trends, though the great difference between both narratives is that in Catalonia the number of authors and published titles is very superior to the authors and titles of infantile and juvenile literature that are published in Basque. The reasons that explain this inequality are basically two: the literary activity in Basque destined the infantile and juvenile public initiates, after the Civil war, almost two decades later than in the territories of Catalan speech; on the other hand, the infantile and juvenile narrative in Basque was nourished in the decade of the 70 and the 80 of translations of works of other literary systems, while the infantile and juvenile narrative in Catalan bet for the publication of original works in Catalan language., Este artículo establece las semejanzas y diferencias entre la narrativa infantil y juvenil escrita en catalán y en euskera (1975-1990) a partir de la caracterización previa y por separado de ambos sistemas literarios.

SEMIOTICS , *METONYMS , *IDENTIFICATION of animals , *HUMAN-animal relationships , *MIMETIC words , *EXPECTATION (Philosophy) - Abstract
Human identities are often conceived in counter-position to objects outside the individual or the collective self with which lines of affinity or opposition, or the blurring together of both, run. Selfhood itself is forged out of the experience of “alterity” through encounters with diverse “others” with whom we identify or differentiate ourselves. With reference to the experience of East African pastoralists, this paper examines the meshing of human and animal identities, where both wild and domestic animals represent human partners and counterparts. Semiotic theories propose that there are two opposed sign functions, based on relations of contiguity and similarity. Domestic animals are “part of,” but often serve as metaphors for, pastoralist societies. Both functions describe forms of human/animal “similitudes,” via large affinities as people are seen as like, as or together with domestic animals, or via small and intimate affinities, built up through sensual experience. Sacrifice creates the ultimate intimacy, as the sacrificed animal becomes a key signifier of personal and social identities. Here, the two semiotic functions are blended to form especially powerful semiotic objects, with metonymical sources elevated to analogies identities. Livestock, then, are human metonyms that serve as especially convincing metaphors and allegories for society and personal identity. It is through relations of intimate affinity between herding peoples and their stock that the sense of what an animal is and the qualities it sensually shares with people are built up through experience and affect into memories and anticipations. Then, the nature of the beast as a set of forms, properties, ideas, and associations is elevated into indexical images of special similitude that can assume the full weight of signifying people as individuals and collectivities and in so doing brings identities within society into being. Conclusions: Els pacients amb ARFID i amb AN presenten un perfil sociodemogràfic i clínic diferent, corroborant que l’ARFID és una entitat diagnòstica distinta de l’AN. Introduction: American Psychiatric Association (APA) published the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in May 2013. The DSM-5 includes a wide and significant review of the Eating Disorders (ED) chapter and among other changes, incorporates the Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) that categorizes patients with avoidance or food restriction without distorted cognitions. Objective: First, describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of a group of patients with ARFID and compare them with a group of patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and a Non-Clinical Group (NCG). Secondly, analyze the psychopathological profile and family relationships in all participant’s families. Methodology: It is a descriptive, observational and comparative study consisting of three samples: two clinical groups (ARFID and AN) and an NCG. A total of 283 subjects were evaluated, 99 children and adolescents (33 per diagnostic group: ARFID, AN and GNC) together with their families (96 mothers and 88 fathers) with a semi-structured diagnostic interview and questionnaires of depression, anxiety, fears, socialization, behavior, quality of life, intellectual capacity, parental bonding, educational style and psychopathology. Results: Patients with ARFID compared to patients with AN, were significantly younger (10.8 vs. 14.1 years) and mostly male (60.6% vs. 6.1%). ARFID group reported an earlier age disease’s onset (6.2 versus 13.4 years) and a longest ED’s evolution (61.2 vs. 8.4 months). Patients with ARFID also showed more medical history (42.4% vs. 12.1%) and greater psychiatric comorbidity (81.8% vs. 33.3%). With statistically significant results (p=.000), ARFID group reported greater presence of fears, poorer general functioning, a lower intelligence quotient and more overprotective parental bond. Commonly with the AN group, it showed a severe deterioration in social function, quality of life and behavior. Family members also showed similar and significant symptoms of psychological distress. Conclusion: ARFID and AN have a different sociodemographic and clinical profile and these results confirm that ARFID and AN are different diagnoses. The results report the ARFID's significant impact on physical, emotional, social, school and family of patient’s development, in some areas it is similar and even superior to AN. This information offers new data to the scientific community about ARFID and it guides clinicians towards new intervention strategies based on the psychopathological profile of each disorder. Due to the novelty of the diagnosis and the lack of studies, more researches are needed to offer new data about the ARFID.

The reasons that explain this inequality are basically two: the literary activity in Basque destined the infantile and juvenile public initiates, after the Civil war, almost two decades later than in the territories of Catalan speech; on the other hand, the infantile and juvenile narrative in Basque was nourished in the decade of the 70 and the 80 of translations of works of other literary systems, while the infantile and juvenile narrative in Catalan bet for the publication of original works in Catalan language.

24. Point-Free Geometries: Proximities and Quasi-Metrics.

Di Concilio, A.
- Abstract
In the Euclidean geometry points are the primitive entities. Point-based spatial construction is dominant but apparently, from a constructive point of view and a naïve knowledge of space, the region-based spatial theory is more quoted, as recent and past literature strongly suggest. The point-free geometry refers directly to sets, the spatial regions, and relations between regions rather than referring to points and sets of points. One of the approaches to point-free geometry proposes as primitives the concepts of region and quasi-metric, a non-symmetric distance between regions, yielding a natural notion of diameter of a region that, under suitable conditions, makes it possible to reconstruct the canonical model. The intended canonical model is the hyperspace of the non-empty regularly closed subsets of a metric space equipped with the Hausdorff excess. The canonical model can be enriched by adding more qualitative structure involving a distinguished family of bounded regions and a group of similitudes preserving bounded regions, so producing a metric geometry in which shape is relevant. The main purpose of this article is to highlight the role of nearness and emphasize the proximity aspects taking part in the construction by quasi-metrics of point-free geometries. - Abstract
In 1367 the Bohemian dissident Milíc spoke of the sacrificium Christi of the Mass, and of himself as ‘offering’ it, with no sense that he was saying something which was potentially controversial (although he uses the expression in a sermon against Antichrist with much of which his successors among the sixteenth-century reformers could have agreed). The debate about sacrifice became so central to the eucharistic controversy of the Reformation that it was the focus of a high proportion of the conversations of the Council of Trent on Eucharist and ministry, in 1547, 1551–2 and 1562. Milíc also regarded the penitential system as having a natural and proper relation to the theology of eucharistic offering and sacrifice. This relationship between the Eucharist and the forgiveness of sins was already being explored in the earliest period of the Reformation debates by Kaspar Schatzgeyer, who died in 1527. He placed an emphasis on the action of the whole Church in the Eucharist, and on the function of the Eucharist within the Church's ministry of reconciliation in this life. In a series of works written in response to the Lutherans in the 1520s he laid the groundwork of a theology of eucharistic reconciliation. But his death and a change in the focus of polemic, as Zwingli and Luther came into conflict and other preoccupations supervened, meant that his ideas were not taken further. The Trent Fathers perceived the interdependency of the Eucharist and penitential practice, but the topics were broadly separated in debate during the Council, and in the making of canons and decrees. - Abstract
The confession of Christ as Lord is the heart of the Christian faith. To him God has given all authority in heaven and on earth. As Lord of the Church he bestows the Holy Spirit to create a communion of men with God and with one another. To bring this koinonia to perfection is God's eternal purpose. The Church exists to serve the fulfilment of this purpose when God will be all in all. Christian authority is Christ's authority. The debates on authority which rent apart the Church in the West in the sixteenth century turned again and again on whether Christ's sovereignty was being set at risk in the Church's life; and whether his Word, Holy Scripture, was being disregarded or overridden by those in authority in the Church. The chapters which follow look first at sixteenth-century concerns over the authority on which Christians believe matters of faith. As textual scholarship investigated Greek and Hebrew and raised the possibility that there ought to be emendations, Scripture itself could no longer be looked upon, in an uncontroversial way, as a text to which one could simply point. The testimony of the authorities other than Scripture with which everyone in the West had been familiar for generations, ceased to be uncontroversially acceptable to many Protestants, and qualifications hedged about the use even of the Fathers. Proof by reasoning, which had reached a high point of sophistication in the late Middle Ages, and in which there had normally been embedded authorities to support propositions, underwent revolutionary attack. - Abstract
I believe the intellectual life of the whole of western society is increasingly being split into two polar groups… At one pole we have the literary intellectuals … at the other scientists. In this book I have argued that the historical origins of two of the hallmarks of modernity – the identification of the meaning of a text with its author's intention, and the privileged status of scientific discourse – were closely intertwined. The modern approach to texts, driven by the agenda of the reformers and disseminated through Protestant religious practices, created the conditions which made possible the emergence of modern science. However much we might regret the passing of the old certainties, one of the advantages of living in a post-modern world is that it gives us a perspective from which to evaluate the previous age and enables us to identify those features of modernity which up until its apparent demise we had taken for granted. New approaches to texts characteristic of the latter half of the twentieth century serve to remind us of the historically-determined nature of all hermeneutical enterprises. While the profusion of‘readings’ characteristic of the post-modern age might evoke a nostalgia for a time when all texts had a determinate meaning, and there were clear criteria which enabled us to approach that meaning, more importantly, they should also furnish us with important insights into pre-modern readings of texts, and to the magnitude of the hermeneutical revolution which took place in the early modern period. - Abstract
God has given us sensible signs and spoken words to show us something of the divine. All teaching is either about things or about signs. Omnis mundi creatura, Quasi liber, et pictura Nobis est, et speculum When we see all things in God, and refer all things to him, we read in common matters superior expressions of meaning. The Ascendency of the Physical Augustine died in the year 430, making his own journey from the visible to the invisible world. At the time of his death, vandal forces were laying siege to Hippo Regius, the North African city in which he had spent the last thirty-nine years of his life, most of them as bishop. Other regions of Europe were beset by similar difficulties, for the disintegration of the Western Empire was well in train. Rome, the eternal city, had fallen to Alaric the Goth in 410, and in what was virtually a formality, the rule of the last Western emperor, Romulus Augustulus, came to end in 476. With the fall of the empire and triumph of the barbarians, the Dark Ages ensued. Thereafter, virtually until the eleventh century, the fires of Western civilisation were kept burning in isolated monastic communities. In cloister and cell, Catholic Christianity was preserved and nurtured, and along with it those vestiges of Platonic philosophy which had been fortuitously incorporated in the body of Christian faith. - Abstract
So that clearly we must suppose … that plants exist for the sake of animals and the other animals for the good of man, the domestic species both for his service and his food, and if not at all events most of the wild ones for the sake of his food and of his supplies of other kinds, in order that they may furnish him both with clothing and with other appliances. If therefore nature makes nothing without purpose or in vain, it follows that nature has made all the animals for the sake of man. For us the windes do blow, The earth doth rest, heav'n move, and fountains flow; Nothing we see but means our good, As our delight or as our treasure; The whole is either our cupboard of food Or cabinet of pleasure. Let man then contemplate the whole of nature in her full and lofty majesty, let him behold the dazzling light set like an eternal lamp to light up the universe, let him see the earth as a mere speck compared to the vast orbit described by this star, and let him marvel at finding this vast orbit itself to be no more than the tiniest point compared to that described by the stars revolving in the firmament… The eternal silence of these infinite spaces fills me with dread. The Ends of the Creation With the collapse of the sacramental view of the cosmos, those questions which had previously found solutions in the symbolic character of natural objects posed themselves anew. - Abstract
That which was our Philosophy is made Philologie, from whence we teach to dispute, not to live. So in natural history, we see there hath not been that choice and judgement used as ought to have been; as may appear in the writings of Plinius, Cardanus, Albertus, and divers of the Arabians, being fraught with much fabulous matter, a great part not only untried, but notoriously untrue, to the great derogation of the credity of natural philosophy with the grave and sober kind of wits. … the Church of England will not only be safe amidst the consequences of a Rational Age, but amidst all the improvements of Knowledge, and the subversion of old Opinions about Nature, and introduction of new ways of Reasoning thereon. This will be evident, when we behold the agreement that is between the present Design of the Royal Society, and that of our Church in its beginning. They both may lay equal claim to the word Reformation, the one having compass'd it in Religion, the other purposing it in Philosophy. They both have taken a like cours [sic] to bring this about; each of them passing by the corrupt Copies, and referring themselves to the perfect Originals for their instruction; the one to the Scripture, the other to the large volume of the Creatures. Aristotle And The Encyclopaedias ‘These are the effects – as observed in natural science [experimenta physica] and tested by great men’, wrote Albertus Magnus in his Book of Minerals: ‘and I would have set forth the Lapidary of Aristotle’, he continues, ‘except that the whole book had not come down to me, but only some excerpts from it.’ [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
For the whole sensible world is like a kind of book written by the finger of God – that is, created by divine power – and each particular creature is somewhat like a figure, not invented by human decision, but instituted by the divine will to manifest the invisible things of God's wisdom. But in the same way that some illiterate, if he saw an open book, would notice the figures, but would not comprehend the letters, so also the stupid and ‘animal man’ who ‘does not perceive the things of God’, may see the outward appearance of these visible creatures, but does not understand the reason within. Philosophy is written in this grand book, the universe, which stands continually open to our gaze. But the book cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language and read the letters in which it is composed. It is written in the language of mathematics, and its characters are triangles, circles, and other geometrical figures without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it. In 1678, Cambridge naturalist John Ray published The Ornithology of F. Willughby, a tribute to his friend and colleague Francis Willughby, who had died unexpectedly at the age of thirty-seven, some six years previously. Ray and Willughby had collaborated on a number of projects involving the study and classification of flora and fauna in England and on the Continent, and before Willughby's untimely demise, they had together made pioneering contributions to natural history. - Abstract
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made. I think that He who made all things in wisdom so created all the species of visible things upon the earth, that He placed in some of them some teaching and knowledge of things invisible and heavenly, whereby the human mind might mount to spiritual understanding and seek the grounds of things in heaven. … after many generations and many conflicts there is strained out at last, I should say, one system of really true philosophy. For that philosophy is not of this world – such a philosophy our sacred mysteries most justly detest – but of the other, intelligible world. The Wisdom Of The World Visitors to modern Athens, if they were to approach the ancient monuments of the Acropolis from the Pláka area, might notice before the final ascent to the ruins of the temple of Athene Nike a set of steps cut into the side of a large granite outcrop which lies below and to the West of the Acropolis. The site is the Areopagus – literally ‘Mars Hill’ – where for the first time in their own city Athenians encountered the new faith of the Christians. To the right of the worn steps is a large brass plaque which bears in Greek the words of the seventeenth chapter of the book of Acts, which recount the events which took place there, probably in the autumn of the year AD 50.

The drug discovery process for the treatment of diseases is wide and complex area in constant evolution. Today is known that multiple factors are responsible for triggering pathogenesis (environment, physiology, genetics...). This greatly influence the development of pharmacological treatments and hence, as of late, there have been a trend on personalized treatments by means of several disciplines like polypharmacology, pharmacogenomics, etc. This customized treatments yields a large amount of data which cannot be processed in a conventional way. Therefore, it is necessary to use Big Data mining and Machine Learning techniques. The present work aims to develop a tool that does a similarity search (virtual screening) of a given molecule against an specially curated database built from other compounds databases and, in a second stage, try to predict by means of Machine Learning algorithms active compounds for a given target.

This article aims to discuss philosophical elements of the work of Jose Barbosa de Sa (?-1776). We seek to analyze the author's system of botanical classification, observing the relation with the construction of analogies and likenesses, evaluating to what extent these ideas were consistent with religious conceptions. We also attempt to examine the well known eighteenth-century known debate about the vegetable reproduction and to analyse non-academic conceptions of it.

Treball Final de Grau en Història i Patrimoni. Codi: HP1036. In this research work, it will try to make a tour of the myths in ancient times, with emphasis on the myth of the creation of the world and of the flood. To understand this point, types of myths that must be defined and a description of what is myth and what is its function will be. More important will be the myths that exist in the ancient Egypt, to be considered one of the most important civilizations in the history, but also the myths from other cultures, such as the Babylonian, Greek and the Maya, taking into account the similarities that there may be between these myths. You will also perform a comparison of the representations of works of art, which has been the universal flood, during the 16th and 17TH centuries.

The rise of the recommendation systems due to applications and web pages that we use every day, results in huge data sets derived from the activity of the users in those systems. In addition to the numerous existing data analysis techniques, the Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is being used as a new tool. We believe that the confluence of these two areas together has not been done so far. The objective of this work is to apply this theory to measure similarities among users in a recommendation system that uses collaborative filtering. For this, it is necessary to understand how to transform the problem of recommendation to the requirements of TDA. The method of measuring similarities proposed is based on the algebraic topology and one of its forms of implementation, using bar codes. Each user in the system has a representation in the form of the mentioned bar code. In this way, we can compare users with each other using an algorithm that uses this topological representation. In order to test the accuracy of this method, a recommendation system has been developed to test the similarity, as well as other usual similarities, using the data set ‘MovieLens 100k’. Although the different tests performed do not improve the result of some usual measures of similarity, this work offers a new approach to TDA in the problem of recommendation, which, as far as we know, has never been addressed. It proposes several future works to be developed to make improvements in the proposed method which can yield promising results.

The thematic and compositional characteristics provided by the early picaresque fictions into the literary tradition of the moment established an alternative path within the subject and narrative modes that will entail a revolution for Western literature. Although the picaresque trail was proved for many foreign literature creations, there are still to this day some traditions waiting for examination. It is the aim of this essay to analyse from a comparative perspective the foundational text of the Slave Narratives genre, The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano, based upon the recognition of picaresque features that may help provide a literary panorama of influences or coincidences shared by traditions

This Thesis explores the scenographic and classical architecture of the Greenwich Royal Hospital for Seamen, founded in 1694 and designed under the supervision of the architect Christopher Wren. While the scenography at Greenwich performs ably as a device for architectural display and presentation, Wren's unorthodox handling of the classical vocabulary has often been criticized as a failure to comprehend the rules governing the terms of its use. However, Wren was no amateur; he had an unshakeable faith in the architecture of antiquity and had a high regard for the theorists and architects of the Italian Renaissance. Moreover, he was virtually legendary for his scholarship in many branches of knowledge, and as a man of great erudition. Thus it is unlikely that his departure from convention was a result of any facile interpretation. Rather, Wren’s break from both the canon of architecture and the sources available to him was deliberate; moreover, it shows that he was filtering his design process though criterion external to architecture. As such, a strict architectural interpretation of Greenwich would leave many questions unanswered. Thus, it is argued, a fair analysis of Greenwich can only be given in conjunction with its historical context. By broadening the scope of our inquiry beyond the parameters of architecture we can begin to understand how Wren's variations reflect, in particular, the political, religious, scientific, philosophical, and economic circumstances of England during the 17th century. Viewed within this broader historical framework we will see how the ideas that influenced England's development as a nation were the very same ideas that influenced the way Wren conceived and evaluated his architectural project at Greenwich. In addition, this article plays close attention to the origins of scenographic and classical architecture during the Italian Renaissance; specifically, it addresses how perspective was used by both artists (in paintings) and theater designers (in stage sets) as an organizational device for rendering convincing three-dimensional architectural environments. As off-shoots of the pictorial realm and stage design it will also be shown that scenography and classicism contain some of there characteristics. Also, a look will be given at how scenography and classicism manifest themselves in different political, religious, socio-economic, and philosophical contexts.

In this paper religion is explored both in Spain and the United States. Research has been conducted in relation to religion in Spain (de Miguel, 1994; Castillo & Tamayo, 2005) and the United States (Mora, 1992). There are also comparative studies, for instance, Wald and Calhoun-Brown (2007). Nevertheless, it is necessary to continue exploring this topic from other perspectives such as creeds, the number of practising believers, the relationship between politics and religion and festivities. This study shows that, despite interesting differences, which reflect the richness of cultures, the United States and Spain are not markedly different in religious terms.

ABSTRACTThis article aims to discuss philosophical elements of the work of José Barbosa de Sá (?-1776).

This work presents an investigation on the definition and applicability of distorted similitudes and the related scaling laws for the analysis of the dynamic forced response of rectangular composite plates. Such responses are determined from a generalization of the modal approach, which allows the use of the mode shapes and natural frequencies in order to establish the proper scaling laws. The cases, herein discussed, are exclusively theoretical and form the basis for the application of numerical methods such as the Finite Element Method. Analytical models of simply supported rectangular plates are used to produce both the original and distorted model responses. The results show that even in the case of distorted models it is possible to reproduce with reasonable accuracy the response of the original plate.

- Abstract
The article looks for establishing certain characteristics that differentiate among the sculptural and picturesque baroque art of work from Quito, Lima and Cuzco. Through the application of the Panofsky method, we tried to find the techniques, materials and their applications that particularized, especially in Christ that were selected in the cities the concept of Pierre Nora's "memory places" as the category analysis in comparison of the collected documental sources, which means: register cards, history bibliography, religion and art of the region. The investigation first analyzed the baroque as the artistic style that was common in the Spanish colony and then it compares with some sculptural and picturesque art of work of Christ, it was considered as one of the most important characters of the Catholic Church among the three cities that are studied., El artículo busca establecer ciertas características diferenciadoras entre las obras de arte del barroco escultórico y pictórico de Quito, Lima y Cuzco.
