This study aimed to identify the regions and lesions most frequently reported in polytraumatized dogs and cats undergoing computed tomography. Research was carried out in the database of three Veterinary Referral Centers, to identify traumatized dogs and cats undergoing computed tomography from 2014 to 2017. Following were collected for each patient: gender, weight, type of study carried out and injuries reported. Lesions were classified according to the region involved: head, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and appendicular skeleton. Thirty-seven studies involving cats and 26 involving dogs were included. Cats mainly presented lesions that involved both the skull and the chest simultaneously. Dogs presented lesions that affected the chest, abdomen and vertebral column simultaneously. In cats, the skull was more affected than in dogs (P

Observational prospective population-based incidence study. The main objective of this study was to assess the incidence of traumatic spinal cord injuries (TSCIs) and incidence rates, in order to provide estimates by age, gender, characteristics and cause. This study was conducted at acute-care spinal cord injury (SCI) hospitals and SCI centers from 11 Italian regions, between 1 October 2013 and 30 September 2014. Data of all consecutive patients with acute TSCI who met the inclusion criteria were obtained through case reporting by clinicians. The data were collected into a web database. Incidence rates and incidence rate ratios were calculated and stratified by age, gender, cause, level and completeness. From 50% of the entire population of Italy, 445 new cases of TSCI were included. The crude incidence rate of TSCI was 14.7 cases per million per year (95% CI: 13.4–16.4); the overall male to female ratio was 4:1 and the mean age was 54. Complete information was available in 85% of the sample and revealed tetraplegia in 58% and incomplete lesion in 67% of cases. The leading cause of TSCI was falls (40.9%) followed by road traffic accidents (33.5%). The leading cause was falls for patients over 55 and road traffic accidents for patients under 55. The changing trend of TSCI epidemiology concerns the increase in the average age of TSCI people and the increase of both cervical and incomplete lesions. The etiology shows the primacy of falls over road traffic accidents and suggests the need for a change in prevention policies.

FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY ,DIM1-LIKE PROTEINS ,SNRNP COMPLEX ,CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC STRUCTURE ,RNA SPLICING - Abstract
The U4/U6âU5 tri-snRNP complex is the catalytic core of the pre-mRNA splicing machinery. The thioredoxin-like protein hDim1 (U5-15 kDa) constitutes an essential component of the U5 particle, and its functions have been reported to be highly conserved throughout evolution. Recently, the Dim1-like protein (DLP) family has been extended to other proteins harboring similar sequence motifs. Here we report the biochemical characterization and crystallographic structure of a 149 amino acid protein, hDim2, which shares 38% sequence identity with hDim1. The crystallographic structure of hDim2 solved at 2.5 Å reveals a classical thioredoxin-fold structure. However, despite the similarity in the thioredoxin fold, hDim2 differs from hDim1 in many significant features. The structure of hDim2 contains an extra alpha-helix (a3) and a beta-strand (b5), which stabilize the protein, suggesting that they may be involved in interactions with hDim2-specific partners. The stability and thermodynamic parameters of hDim2 were evaluated by combining circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy together with chromatographic and cross-linking approaches. We have demonstrated that, in contrast to hDim1, hDim2 forms stable homodimers. The dimer interface is essentially stabilized by electrostatic interactions and involves tyrosine residues located in the alpha-3 helix. Structural analysis reveals that hDim2 lacks some of the essential structural motifs and residues that are required for the biological activity and interactive properties of hDim1. Therefore, on the basis of structural investigations we suggest that, in higher eukaryotes, although both hDim1 and hDim2 are involved in pre-mRNA splicing, the two proteins are likely to participate in different multisubunit complexes and biological processes.

D4Science infrastructure ,Digital Libraries ,gCube Interoperability Framework - Abstract
Interoperability is one of the most challenging issues in the design and operation of large-scale computing infrastructures for multidisciplinary research. It requires solutions that can "embrace" heterogeneity, i.e. accommodate multiple incarnations of similar resources, as well as "hide" it, i.e. provide consumers with a homogeneous view of diverse resources. This paper overviews the measures put in place in the D4Science infrastructure to address a range of interoperability problems.

- Abstract
In large-scale distributed retrieval, challenges of latency, heterogeneity, and dynamicky emphasise the importance of infrastructural support in reducing the development costs of state-of-the-art solutions. We present a service-based infrastructure for distributed retrieval which blends middleware facilities and a design framework to 'lift' the resource sharing approach and the computational services of a European Grid platform into the domain of e-Science applications. In this paper, we give an overview of the DILIGENT Search Framework and illustrate its exploitation in the field of Earth Science. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin cross section asymmetry for deep inelastic muon-nucleon interactions with two high transverse momentum hadrons in the final state. Two methods of event classification are used to increase the contribution of the Photon Gluon Fusion process to above 30%. The most effective one, based on a neural network approach, provides the asymmetries A_p(lN->lhhX)=0.030+/-0.057+/-0.010 and A_d(lN->lhhX)=0.070+/-0.076+/-0.010. From these values we derive an averaged gluon polarization delta(G)/G=-0.20+/-0.28+/-0.10 at an average fraction of nucleon momentum carried by gluons eta=0.07., 13 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, submitted to Phys. QA75 - Abstract
We discuss the design of a quasi-statically typed language for XML in which data may be associated with different structures and different algebras in different scopes, whilst preserving identity. In declarative scopes, data are trees and may be queried with the full flexibility associated with XML query algebras. In procedural scopes, data have more conventional structures, such as records and sets, and can be manipulated with the constructs normally found in mainstream languages. For its original form of structural polymorphism, the language offers integrated support for the development of hybrid applications over XML, where data change form to re flct programming expectations and enable their enforcement.

The purpose of this study was to verify the utility of serum Troponin T (TnT) in the diagnosis of myocardial damage after coronary surgery performed using different methods of myocardial protection. The prognostic value of TnT peak for a poor postoperative course was also investigated.Forty-three patients were enrolled and randomised in 2 group: Group A (n. 22) receiving warm blood cardioplegia and Group B (n. 21) receiving cold blood cardioplegia. According to TnT peak levels 3 subgroups were identified: Subgroup 1 (TnT peakthan 1 ng/ml); Subgroup 2 (TnT peak between 1 and 3 ng/ml), Subgroup 3 (TnT peak3 ng/ml). A comparison with the standard criteria for diagnosis of myocardial ischemia was performed for each subgroup of patients. A 12 months follow-up for the patients of subgroups 1 and 2 was also completed in order to evaluate the prognostic value of a higher TnT peak. The overall patients subdivision in subgroup 1, 2 and 3 was 20 (46.5%), 14 (32.5%) and 9 (20.9%) respectively with no statistical difference for Group A or B. Only 7 of the patients of subgroup 3 (87%) matched the WHO diagnostic criteria for myocardial infarction. At the overall follow-up, 2 (14.28%) patients of subgroup 2, and 4 (20.0%) of subgroup 3, revealed a residual ischemia at the ECG-stress test even if none of these needed reoperation. Our data confirmed the high sensitivity and specificity of TnT measurement in the diagnosis of myocardial infarction and minor myocardial damage. This study, however, failed to show any statistically significant difference of the TnT peak when using different strategies of myocardial protection. The late prognostic value of the TnT increase in the early post-operative course has to be confirmed from a further study.

Home care for terminal oncological patients is, in Italy and in many other highly developed countries, a rapidly expanding part of the health system. At the time of writing it would appear to be the most valid response to the mounting economic and social demands of the population. The present paper has two purposes: 1) to propose an integrated home care operating model for the cancer patient that comprises various operating stages: a) recruitment of patients on the basis of the seriousness of the cancer, life expectancy and socioeconomic conditions of the family; b) interdisciplinary planning of a personalized care project; c) implementation of an integrated care programme at the home of the patient; d) periodic control of the project team; e) periodic professional courses for health personnel; 2) to illustrate our specific clinical expertise in the sector, in 16 months of activity (October 94-February 96) during which we handled on a home basis 27 cancer patients at an advanced stage of the disease; specifically, we describe the main internal-oncological and palliative type problems encountered during the home care period; 3) finally, to highlight in terms of cost/benefit ratio the economic advantages of home compared to the traditional hospitalization care model.

We have measured the spin-dependent structure function $g_1^p$ in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range $0.003 < x < 0.7$ and $1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2$. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is used to evolve the measured $g_1^p(x,Q^2)$ to a fixed $Q^2_0$. The first moment of $g_1^p$ at $Q^2_0 = 10 GeV^2$ is $\Gamma^p = 0.136\pm 0.013(stat.) \pm 0.009(syst.)\pm 0.005(evol.)$. This result is below the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule by more than two standard deviations. The singlet axial charge $a_0$ is found to be $0.28 \pm 0.16$. In the Adler-Bardeen factorization scheme, $\Delta g \simeq 2$ is required to bring $\Delta \Sigma$ in agreement with the Quark-Parton Model. A combined analysis of all available proton and deuteron data confirms the Bjorken sum rule., Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures, uses ReVTex and smc.sty. submitted to Physical Review D

The goal of this study was to report the first case of antral stenosis in a cat. We have described a clinical case of a 9 months old domestic shorthaired cat referred for persistent and refractory vomiting, anorexia and loss of weight. Ultrasound (US) examination detected a mild gastric distension, mild wall thickening (5mm), severe serosal irregularities and a constriction between the fundus and body. Computed tomography (CT) was then performed: a severe gastric stenosis between the body and antrum with minimum contrast transit was detected and confirmed by flexible endoscopic examination. The antral localization of the stenosis was revealed after a cranial celiotomy and Y-U plastic was necessary to correct the defect. The patient completely recovered after surgery with significant body weight gain and remained in remission throughout a 2-years follow-up. While in human medicine there is evidence of acquired antral stenosis, no information is available about the same lesion in the feline species. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of antral stenosis in cats.
