We study the dynamics of a seeding experiment where a fibrous scaffold material is colonized by two types of cell populations. The specific application that we have in mind is related to the idea of meniscus tissue regeneration. In order to support the development of a promising replacement material, we discuss certain rate equations for the densities of human mesenchymal stem cells and chondrocytes and for the production of collagen-containing extracellular matrix. For qualitative studies, we start with a system of ordinary differential equations and refine then the model to include spatial effects of the underlying nonwoven scaffold structure. We develop a model the dynamics of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and chondrocytes evolving in a nonwoven polyethylene terephtalate (PET) scaffold impregnated with hyaluron and supplied with a differentiation medium. The scaffold and the cells are assumed to be contained in a bioreactor with fluid perfusion. The differentiation of hMSCs into chondrocytes favors the production of extracellular matrix (ECM) and is influenced by fluid stress. The model takes deformations of ECM and PET scaffold into account. The scaffold structure is explicitly included by statistical assessment of the fibre distribution from CT images. The effective macroscopic equations are obtained by appropriate upscaling from dynamics on lower (microscopic and mesoscopic) scales and feature in the motility terms an explicit cell diffusion tensor encoding the assessed anisotropic scaffold structure. Numerical simulations show its influence on the overall cell and tissue dynamics.

We propose a continuous model for meniscus cartilage regeneration triggered by two populations of cells migrating and (de)differentiating within an artificial scaffold with a known structure. The described biological processes are influenced by a fluid flow and therewith induced deformations of the scaffold. Although isogeometric analysis exploits smooth B-spline and NURBS basis functions for the definition of discrete function spaces as well as for the geometry representation, the global smoothness in so-called multipatch parametrizations is an issue. Especially, if strong C1 regularity is required, the introduction of function spaces with good convergence properties is not straightforward. However, in 2D there is the special class of analysis-suitable G1 (AS-G1) parametrizations that are suitable for patch coupling. In this contribution we show that the concept of scaled boundary isogeometric analysis fits to the AS-G1 idea and the former is appropriate to define C1-smooth basis functions. The proposed method is applied to Kirchhoff plates and its capability is demonstrated utilizing several numerical examples. Its applicability to non-trivial and trimmed shapes is demonstrated.

In this work, a linear Kirchhoff-Love shell formulation in the framework of scaled boundary isogeometric analysis is presented that aims to provide a simple approach to trimming for NURBS-based shell analysis. To obtain a global C1-regular test function space for the shell discretization, an inter-patch coupling is applied with adjusted basis functions in the vicinity of the scaling center to ensure the approximation ability. Doing so, the scaled boundary geometries are related to the concept of analysis-suitable G1 parametrizations. This yields a coupling of patch boundaries in a strong sense that is restricted to G1-smooth surfaces. The proposed approach is advantageous to trimmed geometries due to the incorporation of the trimming curve in the boundary representation that provides an exact representation in the planar domain. The potential of the approach is demonstrated by several problems of untrimmed and trimmed geometries of Kirchhoff-Love shell analysis evaluated against error norms and displacements. Lastly, the applicability is highlighted in the analysis of a violin structure including arbitrarily shaped patches.

This paper deals with the derivation of Non-Intrusive Reduced Basis (NIRB) techniques for sensitivity analysis, more specifically the direct and adjoint state methods. For highly complex parametric problems, these two approaches may become too costly. To reduce computational times, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Reduced Basis Methods (RBMs) have already been investigated. The majority of these algorithms are however intrusive in the sense that the High-Fidelity (HF) code must be modified. To address this issue, non-intrusive strategies are employed. The NIRB two-grid method uses the HF code solely as a ``black-box'', requiring no code modification. Like other RBMs, it is based on an offline-online decomposition. The offline stage is time-consuming, but it is only executed once, whereas the online stage is significantly less expensive than an HF evaluation. In this paper, we propose new NIRB two-grid algorithms for both the direct and adjoint state methods. On the direct method, we prove on a classical model problem, the heat equation, that HF evaluations of sensitivities reach an optimal convergence rate in $L^{\infty}(0,T;H^1(\Omega))$, and then establish that these rates are recovered by the proposed NIRB approximation. These results are supported by numerical simulations. We then numerically demonstrate that a Gaussian process regression can be used to approximate the projection coefficients of the NIRB two-grid method. This further reduces the computational costs of the online step while only computing a coarse solution of the initial problem. In this article we suggest two discretization methods based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) for planar linear elasticity. On the one hand, we apply the well-known ansatz of weakly imposed symmetry for the stress tensor and obtain a well-posed mixed formulation. Such modified mixed problems have been already studied by different authors. But we concentrate on the exploitation of IGA results to handle also curved boundary geometries. On the other hand, we consider the more complicated situation of strong symmetry, i.e. we discretize the mixed weak form determined by the so-called Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. We show the existence of suitable approximate fields leading to an inf-sup stable saddle-point problem. For both discretization approaches we prove convergence statements and in case of weak symmetry we illustrate the approximation behavior by means of several numerical experiments.

We consider a particle system with uniform coupling between a macroscopic component and individual particles. The constraint for each particle is of full rank, which implies that each movement of the macroscopic component leads to a movement of all particles and vice versa. Skeletal muscle tissues share a similar property which motivates this work. The paper presents a new reduction method designed for dynamic contact problems. Recently, we have proposed an efficient reduction scheme for the node-to-node formulation, that leads to Linear Complementarity Problems (LCP). Here, we enhance the underlying contact problem to a node-to-segment formulation. Due to the application of the dual approach, a Nonlinear Complementarity Problem (NCP) is obtained, where the node-to-segment condition is described by a quadratic inequality and is approximated by a sequence of LCPs in each time step. These steps are performed in a reduced approximation space, while the contact treatment itself can be achieved by the Craig-Bampton method, which preserves the Lagrange multipliers and the nodal displacements at the contact zone. We think, that if the contact area is small compared to the overall structure, the reduction scheme performs very efficiently, since the contact shape is entirely recovered. We want to propose a new discretization ansatz for the second order Hessian complex exploiting benefits of isogeometric analysis, namely the possibility of high-order convergence and smoothness of test functions. Although our approach is firstly only valid in domains that are obtained by affine linear transformations of a unit cube, we see in the approach a relatively simple way to obtain inf-sup stable and arbitrary fast convergent methods for the underlying Hodge-Laplacians. Background for this is the theory of Finite Element Exterior Calculus (FEEC) which guides us to structure-preserving discrete sub-complexes.

Biot's equations of poroelasticity contain a parabolic system for the evolution of the pressure, which is coupled with a quasi-stationary equation for the stress tensor. Thus, it is natural to extend the existing work on isogeometric space-time methods to this more advanced framework of a partial differential-algebraic equation (PDAE). A space-time approach based on finite elements has already been introduced. But we present a new weak formulation in space and time that is appropriate for an isogeometric discretization and analyze the convergence properties. Our approach is based on a single variational problem and hence differs from the iterative space-time schemes considered so far. Further, it enables high-order convergence. Numerical experiments that have been carried out confirm the theoretical findings.

The paper proposes an approach for the efficient model order reduction of dynamic contact problems in linear elasticity. Instead of the augmented Lagrangian method that is widely used for mechanical contact problems, we prefer here the Linear Complementarity Programming (LCP) method as basic methodology. It has the advantage of resulting in the much smaller dual problem that is associated with the governing variational principle and that turns out to be beneficial for the model order reduction. Since the shape of the contact zone depends strongly on the acting outer forces, the LCP for the Lagrange multipliers has to be solved in each time step. The model order reduction scheme, on the other hand, is applied to the large linear system for the displacements and computed in advance by means of an Arnoldi process. In terms of computational effort the reduction scheme is very appealing because the contact constraints are fully satisfied while the reduction acts only on the displacements. As an extension of our approach, we furthermore take up the idea of the Craig-Bampton method in order to distinguish between interior nodes and the nodes in the contact zone. A careful performance analysis closes the paper.

An important ingredient of any moving-mesh method for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems is the mesh deformation technique (MDT) used to adapt the computational mesh in the moving fluid domain. An ideal technique is computationally inexpensive, can handle large mesh deformations without inverting mesh elements and can sustain an FSI simulation for extensive periods ot time without irreversibly distorting the mesh. Here we compare several commonly used techniques based on the solution of elliptic partial differential equations, including harmonic extension, bi-harmonic extension and techniques based on the equations of linear elasticity. Moreover, we propose a novel technique which utilizes ideas from continuation methods to efficiently solve the equations of nonlinear elasticity and proves to be robust even when the mesh is subject to extreme deformations. In addition to that, we study how each technique performs when combined with the Jacobian-based local stiffening. We evaluate each technique on a popular two-dimensional FSI benchmark reproduced by using an isogeometric partitioned solver with strong coupling.

We consider a coupled system composed of a linear differential-algebraic equation (DAE) and a linear large-scale system of ordinary differential equations where the latter stands for the dynamics of numerous identical particles. Replacing the discrete particles by a kinetic equation for a particle density, we obtain in the mean-field limit the new class of partially kinetic systems. We investigate the influence of constraints on the kinetic theory of those systems and present necessary adjustments. We adapt the mean-field limit to the DAE model and show that index reduction and the mean-field limit commute. As a main result, we prove Dobrushin's stability estimate for linear systems. The estimate implies convergence of the mean-field limit and provides a rigorous link between the particle dynamics and their kinetic description. Our research is inspired by mathematical models for muscle tissue where the macroscopic behaviour is governed by the equations of continuum mechanics, often discretised by the finite element method, and the microscopic muscle contraction process is described by Huxley's sliding filament theory. The latter represents a kinetic equation that characterises the state of the actin-myosin bindings in the muscle filaments. The construction of volumetric parametrizations for computational domains is a key step in the pipeline of isogeometric analysis. Here, we investigate a solution to this problem based on the mesh deformation approach. The desired domain is modeled as a deformed configuration of an initial simple geometry. Assuming that the parametrization of the initial domain is bijective and that it is possible to find a locally invertible displacement field, the method yields a bijective parametrization of the target domain. We compute the displacement field by solving the equations of nonlinear elasticity with the neo-Hookean material law, and we show an efficient variation of the incremental loading algorithm tuned specifically to this application. In order to construct the initial domain, we simplify the target domain's boundary by means of an L2-projection onto a coarse basis and then apply the Coons patch approach. The proposed methodology is not restricted to a single patch scenario but can be utilized to construct multi-patch parametrizations with naturally looking boundaries between neighboring patches. We illustrate its performance and compare the result to other established parametrization approaches on a range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional examples.

Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) is a recently introduced computational approach intended to breach the gap between the Finite Element Analysis and the Computer Aided Design worlds. In this work, we apply it to numerically simulate thermal expansion of oil-free twin screw compressors in operation. High global smoothness of IGA leads to a more accurate representation of the compressor geometry. We utilize standard tri-variate B-splines to parametrize the rotors, while the casing is modeled exactly by using NURBS. We employ the Galerkin version of IGA to solve the thermal expansion problem in the stationary case. The results allow to estimate the contraction of the clearance space between the casing and the rotors. The implementation is based on the open source C++ library G+Smo. This paper deals with the analysis of a coupled problem arising from linear magneto-elastostaticity. The model, which can be derived by an energy principle, gives valuable insight into the coupling mechanism and features a saddle point structure with the elastic displacement and magnetic scalar potential as independent variables. As main results, the existence and uniqueness of the solution are proven for the continuous and discrete cases and special properties of the corresponding bilinear forms are shown. In particular, the coupled magneto-elastic bilinear form satisfies an inf-sup condition that is essential for the stability of the problem.

In this paper, we first introduce the reader to the Basic Scheme of Moulinec and Suquet in the setting of quasi-static linear elasticity, which takes advantage of the fast Fourier transform on homogenized microstructures to accelerate otherwise time-consuming computations. By means of an asymptotic expansion, a hierarchy of linear problems is derived, whose solutions are looked at in detail. It is highlighted how these generalized homogenization problems depend on each other. This paper deals with a special class of parametrizations for Isogeometric Analysis (IGA). The so-called scaled boundary parametrizations are easy to construct and particularly attractive if only a boundary description of the computational domain is available. The idea goes back to the Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (SB-FEM), which has recently been extended to IGA. We take here a different viewpoint and study these parametrizations as bivariate or trivariate B-spline functions that are directly suitable for standard Galerkin-based IGA. Our main results are first a general framework for this class of parametrizations, including aspects such as smoothness and regularity as well as generalizations to domains that are not star-shaped. Second, using the Poisson equation as example, we explain the relation between standard Galerkin-based IGA and the Scaled Boundary IGA by means of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. Further results concern the separation of integrals in both approaches and an analysis of the singularity in the scaling center.
